Have 4 Calatheas. If you wanna grow a decent size plant don’t clean the leaves every time you spray with distilled water. Clean only when leaves are dirty/pest prevention. Also, keep it moist all the time, idea of watering when the soil is dry will constantly cause dry leave tips and slow growth.
Mine is doing good with tap water! It even popped out a new leaf three days ago! I have it placed in my bathroom under a window, so it don't get too much light, but still enough to survive xD
Any way to control getting more pink leaves? Or is it completely out of our control? I have mine under a grow light now and hoping that won’t affect it...
You're welcome! Yes, I do like a bit of perlite. Anywhere from 30-50% perlite while amending the soil though I will likely play around with soil composition this spring.
Do burgundy backed calatheas lose their coloring in too much sunlight? Does the white star prefer darker shadier areas or can it take some indirect light from a grow light about 5 feet away?
From my experience, too much sun exposure can cause issues with coloring. Usually you will see curling leaves pretty quickly if the light is that intense and you can move them back before too much damage is done. I keep one white star very close (within a foot) of a north facing window and another about four feet back from a south-facing window (no direct light). The one near the south facing window grows a lot faster--though it is also more established. The newest one that I showed in the video is actually in a bit less light at the moment to help it adjust to the house. I'll start moving it closer to more light soon to see how it reacts. I think, because they came from different places, each of them seem conditioned for different levels of light and some have done better with more or less so it can get confusing! 😊
When I bought my Ornata it had 5 leaves and now ...zero..nada..nothing . Got a Makoyana from a plant friend ..now same thing 😮 . Fall in love with the White Star ...now all the 3 leaves are half size 😏 . They don't love me I guess but I don't give up 😊😊😊
Are these guys by any chance prone to catching spider mites? Ive had other calatheas catch mites before but they can always be revived except for my white star. Ive tried 3 times and im currently shopping for another lol. I had one die because I was away on xmas break (my bad) and then my other two replacements (bought a new one after each white star died) caught spider mites and every plant safe treatment that was reccommended to me did not work and my plants constantly die. Sorry for my long comment just curious if this is a common occurance and your spider mite removal tips and tricks?
I was having the same problem. It kept coming back no matter how many treatments I was doing. I just cut all the leaves off and started new. I have no idea if it’ll work.. lol
I've seen this question debated a lot and, unfortunately, I don't have a good technical answer. I can say that I've grown calathea with only worm castings and they were fine. I do repot them every 16-24 months so the soil does get replenished on top of the supplemental worm castings. When I fertilize, I do see more vigorous growth, though I also see fertilizer burn (when I mess up), and sometimes more flowering than new foliage though it may be something else triggering the flowering (maybe light?).
Stromantha don't usually have very robust root systems. So long as the propagation rhizome has roots, it could work. I have a video that I am going to link where I propagate my stromanthe through division hereL: th-cam.com/video/67eMYzhZrp4/w-d-xo.html. You can see in the video that the root system is pretty small/delicate. However, the divided plants are thriving and honestly should probably be either potted up this spring or divided again. Some plants are more tolerant of chemicals / minerals in the water than others. The Marantaceae family is notorious for being sensitive to hard water, but there're plenty of plants that need soft water (the Sarraceniaceae family, for instance). But even within Calatheas some are worse than others, my zebrina is the worst out of the ones that I have.
I wish I knew! I haven't used grow lights on my calathea yet. I had a pretty bad spider mite outbreak this year as I was planning the setup and after that, it reduced my collection to the point where I just moved them all around to the best natural light. Once I get a chance to try out some lights, I'll certainly share what I find.
I am green with envy! Actually, I live in an area with droughts so I'm not sure I could turn green even if I tried. I would love to try rainwater but the meager bit we get every year is filled with vehicle emissions, etc. Someday, though. Someday, I will live somewhere I can collect my own!

I use my oil diffuser for a humidifier for a few of my plants also.

Is worm casting enough for prayer plants or do I still need to give fish emulsion on top of worm casting?
