I love everything about death in this movie from his weapons to his lines to the fact that he manifests as a wolf, and speaking of his wolf design the animators did an amazing job with his clothing to the hints that he really is death before the reveal, like the shots of cream Puss I has drank, being on his 9th, the fact he got visibly annoyed at puss saying that he ‘laughs in the face of death’ by scratching the counter, he does the coin in the eyes thing(The Greeks placed coins on the eyes of their dead relatives so they could pay the ferry man to cross the river styx to the afterlife,) only Puss sees him and he doesn’t appear on the map even his presence at the giant attack in the beginning of the movie. It’s all so impactful but the best part is the whistle that tells Puss he is nearby as it can terrify him without even seeing death, put him on edge even more. I don’t think enough people understand how impactful the whistle is as it the fact that he uses two senses to alert his prey theoretically he could just silently stalk Puss, but he does enjoy the hunt and the fear of his prey which puts him on a razor’s edge between villain and force of nature. He thoroughly enjoys Puss’s discomfort and anyone who has anxiety knows certain things can set you off, and anyone who has had a panic attack understands what Puss feels. I have never seen a panic attack don so well in any movie or tv show, animated or not. All in all I cannot say enough good things about death.
I related to this movie so much. My fear of my own and others mortality, my anxiety. Watching him sit there hyperventilating unable to do anything made my heart race also, but watching Perrito calm him down was so comforting. Really such a lovely movie.
My favorite thing about Death that i have not seen some one talk about is that at the boss fight Death does not leave the star he only leaves the fire pit. the only character main that does not see death as a wolf or as a concept in the whole movie is Jack who dies in the star which Death has not left. the phenix (symbol of rebirth) and the cricket (every ones conscience) might have seen Death while waiting around the star while flying both not needing a wish, but that does not really mater they are immortal ideas like death but not as legendary
Jack Horner is the irredeamable villain, Goldi and the Bears are purely antagonists, and Death dances just on the line where everyone is at each others' throats about whether he is an antagonist or a villain. You could say... he's not a villain, not an antagonist, he's just right.
As of recently with the incident of Disney’s flopped movie “Wish” it feels like a prophecy has come to pass. With Jack Horner representing a portrayal of Disney incorporating the many different series and IPs, Jack Horner went after the *WISHING* Star, Disney’s latest movie for their 100 year celebration was called *”WISH”*. You CAN’T fucking make this shit up! It’s so ironic!
The more the movie progressed, the more Perrito became the MVP in a way. Not only did he fix Puss and Kitty, but also had a huge impact on fixing Goldy Locks. So he actually put his therapy dog powers to use on atleast 3, if you count the bears, 6 people and helped better their lives. Dude is magic, I have nothing else to say.
a little extra note is that baby bear. never calls goldi sister or anything else then orphan until she saves him vs jack... so not only does goldi feel like she doesn't belong baby keeps making her feel like she doesn't belong.
Here's what would tip it nux. As an antagonist, death would just wait for a reckless and disrespectful (in regards to his safety and respect of death) person as puss. However, death here, is actively attempting murder. If you don't save someone from getting hit by a truck, you may be an ass. If you shove someone in front of the truck, you're a murderer.
Yet in the end Death managed to kill the arrogant hero he went out of his way to kill. As he says. "That arrogant hero I came here to kill... I don't see him in front of me anymore"
@Chara_Dreemurr1 Even with that interpretation, death didn't kill the arrogant hero, he killed the arrogance itself and killing an emotion or confidence still doesn't make you a villian. Especially when you're a literal reaper.
@Chara_Dreemurr1 And you killed the happy commenter. Now I'm just a commenter. Congratulations, you're a murderer and I'm dead. Except I'm not dead, my emotional state is. No one died, no murder occurred, not a villian.
he really is, though now that I am saying it death actually does not really have a set gender. I bet they are supposed to be genderless though almost everyone thinks they are a guy.
@@rafowlgaming146 your right, although the point I was getting at was that in media death is both male and female while at the same time neither, ergo genderless/uni. Example being in marvel, death is shown being feminine while here death is more masculine. It just depends on what beings believe to prefer death to be shown as to them.
The thing about Goldie is something that I believe all adopted children can relate to. Even if you were adopted by the most loving, compassionate, supportive family, when you find out you are adopted it really messes you up. "Why didn't they want me? What did I do wrong? Am I really that unlovable that even my own mother couldn't love me?" Yes you can work your way through it but it's still a hell of a blow. And it's not that you don't love your adoptive family but sometimes there are layers you have to work through dealing with the shock.
Another disney story that goes dark quickly is Quasimodo( IMO), in the first scene the Bailif( Judge) Frodo is willing to KILL an infant and kills the infants mother. And death is nevet not off the tabke for Judge Frodo, hell he even tried to kill a family in a burning building.
Disney already did an amazing job of a twist villain in the movie Atlantis. The small cracks show really on and the guy is never really seen as a good guy, but in the end he goes so fast to become the true villain, which is a twist but not out of nowhere. Such an underrated movie
YESS I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD REACT TO HIS VIDEO This movie is a 100/10, I havent stopped loving it since it came out lol Also, i just gotta say, I love your charisma. You're hilarious !
Death Villany is in the same vain as Hades Villany from Hercules. He wants this one person to die for his own benefit and amusement usinf any means possible. For Death at the end he changes his mind after seeing Puss' resolve. Hades however had bigger plans and goals that truly made him a villain. They both had the same starting point and path that went in different directions near the end.
5:06 yes the most gorgeous animation you've ever seen in an animated film if you've never seen anime every single film from hayao Miyazaki looks a thousand times better than anything a Westerner can make
But this is coming from a guy that doesn't think Western media hasn't come out with anything good since the 2000s. 2010's forward was just dogshit in rehashes and remakes and reduce of old properties cuz nobody has imagination anymore
My personal favorite character from the movie is actually Goldilocks. Her arch wasn't grand and extensive, she wasn't a pure evil monster or an unstoppable force of nature, but that is what I love about her. Her character developed all came down to one important decision and a realization of what she really wants from life. It's simple but impactful and important. I mean seriously try thinking of the scene where baby is being slowly pulled up in that current that will kill him and goldilocks has to make the big decision of making the wish she wanted for the "perfect" family damning the current one or to save them even if it means she may not get that wish. If she chose to damn the family that love her that are willing to do anything to make her happy even if it comes at the cost of themselves then wouldn't it be a major disappointment. I know I would have been upset with her. I love how while they aren't a major "villain" they themselves are aware of that by the end of it. The movie was aware of it. The scene where the map goes haywire and says that what Goldilocks wishes for has always been with her. The thing driving her she already had and just needed to see it and come to terms with it. A surprisingly realistic problem people have. The saying goes you don't know what you have until it's gone. It's not uncommon for people to fixate on what's wrong in their life and not see what is just right. That is until is isn't an has become another bigger problem. I like to think how Goldilocks hesitates with taking the wish that knowing that she would be disappointed in herself if she made the mistake of letting her bear family die. That is actually what I love about this film as a whole is how it isn't afraid to tackle real problems such as kitties trust issues, puss in boots fear of his own mortality, and goldilocks perfectionism (that could have stemmed from being a lonely orphan wishing more from life). That is basically what I would summarize as her big character flaw she has to overcome throughout the movie. She is obsessed with her "perfect" or "just right" that doesn't realize how good things are for her now. The issue with being a perfectionists is if you are always looking up for the grand ideal you'll never see the beauty in what's before you. (Note) Ok, I'll admit I am likely a bit biased. I relate to goldilocks a little too much. She's still a great character. I stand by that.
I think the only kinda twist villain Disney did well was King Candy in Wreck it Ralph. You knew he was a bad guy, he just seemed to have a semi valid point for most of the film.
who ever hired wolf voice, just give her/him a massive raise, because that actor make the wolf get to another level. i love thats from brazil and have that tone on his voice that make it perfect for this role. when i saw the wolf, i knew he was death... for some reason i think someone at dreamwork was a huge DIABLO 3 fan, because the Wolf is almost 1 to 1 comparison to Mathael Angel of Death, from the color scheme, clothing, weapons, he even does mathael pose from Diablo 3...
15:24 you explain perfectly why everybody thinks this is a great movie is because just putting in just the tiniest bit of effort make something that would just normally be mid to extraordinary that is how far Western media has fallen
YES!! Finally, someone else gets it. "Actions have Consequences" and society has been slowly indoctrinating the idea that when bad people do bad things they need to be forgiven... That is a horrible idea. Can we forgive someone for an accidental motor vehicle hit? Depends on whether it was genuinely accidental. But generally yes, we can. But if an intent to bring harm to another is the case then My answer will be always, no.
Forgiveness is good, but it’s not supposed to be a get out of jail free card. People can be forgiven, but they do still need to face their consequences.
Yeah, death is evil in this instance because his intent is malice. He feels disrespect from Puss and wants him to feel powerless because of that. In the end, Puss faces death without cowering because helearns that while death is inevitable, he can and should appreciate the life he has and respect life and death both.
Shrek 4 is a masterpiece as well, but its just different. I skipped it for 10 years because it was tainted by Shrek 3, but I do believe it rivals Shrek 2 and is a worthy part of the franchise.
all of the shrek movies are not that good. I actually think the only good thing I found in all of its movies is the fairytale aspect that does not include romance nor rumplestiltcan go pass before the movie even starts.
The thing is, the Wolf is the incarnation of a concept, a cosmical being and invincible, he never truly gets defeated, but as a concept, Puss can overcome him, he's not truly a villain or at least, not in a traditional sense
I feel like we are going through a bit of a much needed animation war between this beauty and the mario movie. Disney needs to do something good. Even their pixar movies have been lacking.
Saying Death isn't a villain because he's killing people who don't appreciate their lives is like agreeing with John Kramer in Saw, cuz that's pretty much his excuse.
52:11 I gotta disagree with you here, Nux. Death is actively trying to take somebody’s life, and operate outside of the realm that he’s supposed to. He even admits it just like Jack Horner. If being evil is solely dependent upon perspective, then it could be said that Jack Horner isn’t evil. Death actively knows what he’s doing is wrong. He’s definitely a villain.
I admit, I don’t want a 4th panda movie, (mostly because I’m afraid they will fall in comparison to this movie)…but if they DO a 4th, they have a high bar to match.
Goldylock's crime family wasn't completely just or completely evil. They were JUST WRONG ( or right ). They were meant to mirror team friendship and show a possible path Puss could take. You have the good, the bad, and the ugly, or in their words, the "just right".
Idk why so many people think the last scene is "just a teaser" for Shrek 5. This works on its own, fits to the story and to Puss' character growth. The whole encounter with Death teached him to set his priorities straight. Instead of wasting his last life on pretending to be an outlaw-legend in some random villages for meaningless "fans" who are mostly on his side for money, he chooses to meet his old friends. Because he knows he doesn't have much time, canonically he's most likely in his middle age, and he has no "cheat codes" anymore. Even tho he never died in a serious way, there's a huge possibility he may die in some ordinary way, like every other person who has only one life. The last scene honestly brings tears to my eyes, it's just a perfect conclusion to how Puss changed as a person, and how inspirational it is.
If I turn my mind to the villain's I most enjoy, it really comes down to how well they're presented. They can just be plain greedy, past the point of redemption, or have given in to some base negative, or ideal which they can't give up now. Within that, they can be simple, or complex. But... if you're going to make a villain complex, the effort needs to be put in to make their fall work. If they're to be redeemed, that has to make sense. But then... if we use the term villain, it really ought to be for the irredeemable, otherwise they more commonly fit antagonist. Horner has some unspoken potential depth to how he got where he was. I can imagine him being told he had everything he could want, in a world of magic and fairy tales that make it all seem mundane. But even if they took the time to flesh that out, give nuance and complexity to the path he took, he's still decided he doesn't care about anyone but himself. That, is what makes him a villain.
Honestly, Jack doesn't have ulterior motives either. But that's because he has no filter or shame whatsoever because he straight up is unapologetically evil and completely unfeeling. So the pure evil to Perrito's pure good.
Of course it took inspiration in terms of animation from Into The Spider-Verse, they even had one of the animation directors from Into The Spider-Verse on the project.
59:57 There is actually a wild dog in India that whistles. It's called a Dhole. It can't bark or howl, so to communicate over long distances it whistles. It sounds like a human whistle, too. It's kinda' cool. th-cam.com/video/FxG3p7LO8v0/w-d-xo.html
To be honest, I completely forgot about the therapy dog thing and not knowing one, I had overlooked it until I was told by the internet, but that's just me.
Death is like John from Saw, I do think even if it may be justifyable, it is still morally wrong to kill someone simply because they don't respect their life Same with sleeping with their wife who they aren't close enough to, stealing their possessions that they don't want as much as you do, etc Just because someone values something more than you do, it doesn't give them the right to take it, Death isn't something that happens to bad people or he would have been after Jack, this isn't karma, it's a twisted sense of morality from a being which himself is immortal, and as such really shouldn't be judging people based on how they react to their own mortality. I don't think puss is unaware that he could die, I think he is in denial because of how scary that concept is, such that he refuses to even think about it. He didn't learn dying was possible through death, he learned that it wasn't sufficient to live without fighting to be alive, not just because Death itself would prey on his carelessness, but also because life itself is more fulfilling when it's something to fight for Basically I do think death is a villain, but in more of a cosmic sense, sure it's not personal, death would delight in killing anyone who tempts him that much, I mean he's literally a doggo getting overly teased. also I think "Who can say whether x is right or wrong" is a poor justification for genuine pre-meditated murder of a cat... That would be like saying that a woman dressing provocatively is justification for sexual assault by idk the god of childbirth or something, like that makes no sense whatsoever, it's just that death isn't a mortal and as such doesn't follow the same social norms as everyone else. Death does not have any consequences himself, and he delights in making sure others come face to face with theirs. That being said, I can see the argument for both Death being a villain or an antagonist, I mean it would be like a cosmic force like chuthulu actually having a vendeta about a random guy, I mean there is nothing in the real world to make sense of something like that... so I would say something like, Death is a character who delights in doing evil things, but one would need an immortal authority to claim that he himself is evil, or something, and in the movie there isn't one, so it's sort of unknown ig... I'll still call him a villain!
Dreamworks did not need to go this hard in making a sequel, but I sure glad they did!
and a sequel to puss in boots of all films

Nux & Shaff should totally collab some day
I straight up gave up hope for the film industry until I saw this in the theater. What a Masterpiece.
My favorite thing about Death that i have not seen some one talk about is that at the boss fight Death does not leave the star he only leaves the fire pit. the only character main that does not see death as a wolf or as a concept in the whole movie is Jack who dies in the star which Death has not left. the phenix (symbol of rebirth) and the cricket (every ones conscience) might have seen Death while waiting around the star while flying both not needing a wish, but that does not really mater they are immortal ideas like death but not as legendary
says the whitehouse who thinks it can live forever always being the symbol of democracy.
Omg i didn't notice that
The bear group is not the most pure evil villains
But they are just comedic relief
You could say they're...just right.
I'll go home now
ah ha nice one! 👍 That was beary good, Tho I bet that joke was too cold for some peoples tastes.
Jack Horner is the irredeamable villain, Goldi and the Bears are purely antagonists, and Death dances just on the line where everyone is at each others' throats about whether he is an antagonist or a villain.
You could say... he's not a villain, not an antagonist, he's just right.
Sounds right.
Since we’re on this topic,
i’d like to recommend Aldone and his villain analysis videos.
His style of video is sorely underrated and needed
You're right. Death is an antagonist. He is not a villain who needs to be stopped, but a vigilante dealing out justice in an unjust situation.
He is a villain. End of story.
@Demonslayre he killed the arrogant hero. Now theres just a hero
@Chara_Dreemurr1 And you killed the happy commenter. Now I'm just a commenter. Congratulations, you're a murderer and I'm dead. Except I'm not dead, my emotional state is. No one died, no murder occurred, not a villian.
I'd say that Death the character is himself a villain but he also poetically represents a force of nature.
The last wish is 1 of my favourite films even now and death is definitely the best character in the film
he really is, though now that I am saying it death actually does not really have a set gender. I bet they are supposed to be genderless though almost everyone thinks they are a guy.
@@UltaStorm who cares about gender when a character is so well made
@@rafowlgaming146 your right, although the point I was getting at was that in media death is both male and female while at the same time neither, ergo genderless/uni. Example being in marvel, death is shown being feminine while here death is more masculine. It just depends on what beings believe to prefer death to be shown as to them.
56:18 yes Nux. They did do a really job indeed
The movie Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron has a villian that doesn't get killed off
Oh hell yeah. Schaffrilas. He's my favorite review channel.
Definitely one of the best movies of the last 4 years!
The background build up to stalking his victim; Death is basically clockwork from sly.
This is peak dreamworks
Another disney story that goes dark quickly is Quasimodo( IMO), in the first scene the Bailif( Judge) Frodo is willing to KILL an infant and kills the infants mother.
And death is nevet not off the tabke for Judge Frodo, hell he even tried to kill a family in a burning building.
Disney already did an amazing job of a twist villain in the movie Atlantis. The small cracks show really on and the guy is never really seen as a good guy, but in the end he goes so fast to become the true villain, which is a twist but not out of nowhere. Such an underrated movie
56:22 You're right Nux, they did really job 🤝
Death gives life value.
I've come to the conclusion that dreamworks doesn't make sequels they make Master-crafts.
shrek made 3-5 sequels too late to just having the first movie. what you talking about?
@@UltaStorm when I say sequel I mean Kung Fu Panda 2, how to train your dragon 2, and Shrek 2 anything they make after direct sequels are hit or miss.
Big man funny
I'm so proud of Big Man. He's grown so much from Small Child 😢😢😢
Yeah, you mama funny
You can say Goldi and the bears are just right as villains
YESS I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD REACT TO HIS VIDEO
This movie is a 100/10, I havent stopped loving it since it came out lol
Also, i just gotta say, I love your charisma. You're hilarious !
23:11 I wish he said "learning to take risks, like using your left hand for company"
I can not describe how much I love this movie in only a comment, certified hood classic right here
As a swedish person That’s the definition of ”lagom/just right” the Lagom jokes are sooo funny and you can see why Gold lock is made in Germany😂
wtf youtube i didn’t get a notification that this video came out!!!! i have it set to get all notifications from ur channel
4:55 "There's no avoiding this i'm dead" lmao
Never did I expect to see Schaffrillas on this channel, pleasant surprise.
Oh the twist villain guy who loves to waste time on twist villains.
Death is like adult Eren in the first episode😂
It's almost like death is just a phantom of Puss's fearful imagination.
5:06 yes the most gorgeous animation you've ever seen in an animated film if you've never seen anime every single film from hayao Miyazaki looks a thousand times better than anything a Westerner can make
I will give it to him the dog is the only good character in the f******movie everything else is just standard
But this is coming from a guy that doesn't think Western media hasn't come out with anything good since the 2000s. 2010's forward was just dogshit in rehashes and remakes and reduce of old properties cuz nobody has imagination anymore
Man whatever
It was good because they are obviously reviving the shrek universe. And the start of this revival. Had to be good.
(Note)
Ok, I'll admit I am likely a bit biased. I relate to goldilocks a little too much. She's still a great character. I stand by that.
I think the only kinda twist villain Disney did well was King Candy in Wreck it Ralph.
You knew he was a bad guy, he just seemed to have a semi valid point for most of the film.
imagine how cathartic it is for Jack to F!@# with Pinocchio's conscience😂
Nux, you should look at Ranking of the King's final fight against king boze as it is very similar to the puss and boot's giant battle. It's a treat.
Nux + PiB 2 + more than 1h of content? I'm down!
Alright. What people dont get about horner is that his situation and predicament follows a logic
who ever hired wolf voice, just give her/him a massive raise, because that actor make the wolf get to another level. i love thats from brazil and have that tone on his voice that make it perfect for this role.
when i saw the wolf, i knew he was death... for some reason i think someone at dreamwork was a huge DIABLO 3 fan, because the Wolf is almost 1 to 1 comparison to Mathael Angel of Death, from the color scheme, clothing, weapons, he even does mathael pose from Diablo 3...
The voice actor for Death is Wagner Moura.
Idk about what you mean about Brazil, his native language is Spanish since he's from El Salvador xD
He's not from El Salvador, he's from Salvador, a city in Brazil@@zeldaprincessgirl100
15:24 you explain perfectly why everybody thinks this is a great movie is because just putting in just the tiniest bit of effort make something that would just normally be mid to extraordinary that is how far Western media has fallen
The fact that it's a coming of age story, but it's a coming of OLD age is amazing
People can be forgiven, but they do still need to face their consequences.
uh where in the entire vid does your statment even stand ground? Just confused and wondering.
I always thought death was an anti villain
Sometimes i couldn’t tell which one of you were talking because the two of you have a bit similar voices😂😂😂
Jack Horny is so funny I almost don't regret watching an hour of reaction content
REPHRASE THAT NOW 🔫
Ahh Nux, you never fail to spread my toes with good content
Love Schiffrilas, one of my favorite, movie/TV reviewers, you should react to more of his videos.
@@UltaStorm Oh? I didn't know that they really aren't good. Thanks for letting me know.
@@UltaStormbullshit
@@signa8don’t listen to him
@dulcemendoza3526 don't worry, it was sarcasm.
What a crazy crossover episode.
The thing is, the Wolf is the incarnation of a concept, a cosmical being and invincible, he never truly gets defeated, but as a concept, Puss can overcome him, he's not truly a villain or at least, not in a traditional sense
23:07 that hurt… that hurt a lot but is needed
Nux, giving us wisdom in this video.
0:44 You might be right, I actually did watch this movie with my mom and my former boyfriend.
I always thought Puss' journey was about him going through a midlife crisis.
I feel like we are going through a bit of a much needed animation war between this beauty and the mario movie. Disney needs to do something good. Even their pixar movies have been lacking.
One of the few sequels that somehow was just as much of a napalm attack as the first movie. Last Wish was so good.
How does this movie just has it all, that's not fair
Saying Death isn't a villain because he's killing people who don't appreciate their lives is like agreeing with John Kramer in Saw, cuz that's pretty much his excuse.
52:11 I gotta disagree with you here, Nux. Death is actively trying to take somebody’s life, and operate outside of the realm that he’s supposed to. He even admits it just like Jack Horner. If being evil is solely dependent upon perspective, then it could be said that Jack Horner isn’t evil. Death actively knows what he’s doing is wrong. He’s definitely a villain.
As someone with panic attacks that takes me 5 days to recover from. Velma showing panic attacks was offensive. This movie is gold ❤
56:03 Pyrocynical moment
me watching the movie for the first time knowing Wagner Moura, actor for Pablo fucking Escobar in Narcos, was going to voice death: 🌚
10:40 Confirmed that nux watches movies standing?
More SchaffrillasProductions please
Of course it took inspiration in terms of animation from Into The Spider-Verse, they even had one of the animation directors from Into The Spider-Verse on the project.
34:11 yeah I agree I am British and I too would not want to be adopted by Bears
65 likes in 6 minutes is kinda wild
I got to see this in theaters bc of my school field trip
Well yeah Puss isn't Chuck Norris or Teddy Roosevelt, or Kempachi, Death isn't afraid of him.
To be honest, I completely forgot about the therapy dog thing and not knowing one, I had overlooked it until I was told by the internet, but that's just me.
ur relatable with ur opinion on the wolf guy
Hot take? The Last Wish > Spiderverse 1.
yeah the last wish is definitely better than spiderverse 1
They're a bit too different in many ways for me to say either one is better than the other
Death is like John from Saw, I do think even if it may be justifyable, it is still morally wrong to kill someone simply because they don't respect their life
Same with sleeping with their wife who they aren't close enough to, stealing their possessions that they don't want as much as you do, etc
Just because someone values something more than you do, it doesn't give them the right to take it, Death isn't something that happens to bad people or he would have been after Jack, this isn't karma, it's a twisted sense of morality from a being which himself is immortal, and as such really shouldn't be judging people based on how they react to their own mortality.
I don't think puss is unaware that he could die, I think he is in denial because of how scary that concept is, such that he refuses to even think about it. He didn't learn dying was possible through death, he learned that it wasn't sufficient to live without fighting to be alive, not just because Death itself would prey on his carelessness, but also because life itself is more fulfilling when it's something to fight for
Basically I do think death is a villain, but in more of a cosmic sense, sure it's not personal, death would delight in killing anyone who tempts him that much, I mean he's literally a doggo getting overly teased.
also I think "Who can say whether x is right or wrong" is a poor justification for genuine pre-meditated murder of a cat...
Death just like Jigsaw fr fr.
