When my triplets were born, I brought them home from the hospital in my 4Runner-now they will be driving soon and I’m going to give them that same 4Runner. Maybe Toyota will find inspiration for an ad by this and give me a new one in exchange. Lol

The highest i know of on a still running 1999 toyota 4runner is 760k original miles on a mechanic friends siblings T4R.
I bought my 1997 back in june 2022 with 152k miles from the original owners. 3.4 V6, 5 spd manual, 4x4. I absolutely love it.
Since ive bought it i have put new tires on it, tinted the windows to 5% and installed a new clutch master and slave cylinder because the master cylinder was loosing pressure. I have since ordered rebuild kits for the master and slave so i will have spares.
I have also changed all the fluids in the engine, transmission, transfer case and axles.
Next i will change the brakes, and check the timing belt and replace along with the water pump if necassary.
The truck runs like a top, it works great in 4wd and i LOVE the sliding rear window. I drive it just under 100 miles a day commuting and have put over 12k miles on it since owning it. Even took it on an 8 hr road trip at 70 mph with cruise control set nearly the entire time. Very comfortable ride.
Some of the modifications i would like to do in the future are:
    -tundra brake upgrade
-custom build a winch bumper to protect the front end incase of collision or wildlife
-ditch lights for added low light visibility
-maybe a swing out tire carrier on the rear.

damn. I thought I was doing something
my 99 limited has 606k. no big issues. just an annoying leak I think is coming from oil cooking housing hose. it is a teeny drip only when the car is off on an incline. but man this is my 4th 3rd gen4runner. you cannot blow em up unless you don't keep oil in it or neglect timing belt.

Transmission transfer case and differential fluid changes every 30,000. The thing still runs like it’s brand new. The only thing I have had to do to this truck is replace the two front axles because I have a 2 inch lift. That is literally all I’ve had to do nothing else is broken. Partly because I take such good care of it but 90% because it’s just Toyota baby.

Great story telling on this 3 gen Toyota. I own a 99 Limited and I have 385,000 miles. I will attempt to pass this great dependable vehicle on to my son. Furthermore, my goal is to obtain 500,000 mile. Honestly, this vehicle will be operation for decades to come and will out live me. Currently, I have to conduct the following maintenance: replace valve cover gasket, brake pads, and water pump and timing belt @about 400,000 which would be my third replacement.

PSA : 1996-2002 ( North American) 4-Runners have a rubber timing belt. Be religious about changing the OEM rubber timing belt every ~95K miles.
Luckily, the engine won't be ruined if you mess up. It's non interference.

Yours is probably modified with suspension lift and after market goodies. It's a shame you didn't put it up on the lift. I'd love to see how a California frame has held up compared to my '97 SR5 with 282,000 miles that's spent it's whole life in the salt and rust belt.

I now own a 2003 V8 4Runner SR5 but I so miss my 2000 Red SR5 4x4. Sadly I lost it in a hydroplane accident with a roll over down an embankment. It had 254K miles and it ran like a top. My current 4th gen has 185K and feels much larger than the 3rd Gen.

Sounds like a horrible accident. Was anyone hurt?

@@timetowakeup6302 I had a broken neck and was the only vehicle and passenger. I walked up the embankment and flagged down the police, didn't know my head was bleeding from going through the sun roof because of the extreme heavy rain.

I have a 1996 Ltd - exact same colours with 425000 km (264000 miles) and everything works. I just drove it on a 4000 km trip pulling a small 14 fiberglass travel trailer from the west coast through the Rockies to Regina and back. She's thirsty, but its the best vehicle I've ever owned. For the last 8 years I've only driven it in the summer. The frame is immaculate, just put new springs and air suspension in it. I look after it and the thing never lets me down. I'm thinking I should replace the fuel pump just in case - although it also runs perfectly. I drive an 05 Echo hatchback the rest of the year and it is equally amazing with almost 300,000km. I'll always own Toyotas. Probably the two I have will outlast me!

EXTREMELY well made. The best. however, up here in the northeast, it would have been completely eaten up with rust and had been in the crusher several years ago

"I know we know..." great vehicles! Even when they've rough, they're great! My '90 doesn't squeak or rattle. Less than 200k... but I don't expect it.
Love the videos! Really love the calm vibe! I learn something new every time.

Definitely a solid choice. The best car ever built in my opinion is the 2nd generation Lexus LS400.
