- For a 26 year old 4x4 SUV, there is nothing better than a 3rd Gen 4Runner! Amazing 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE engine, tough as nails 4 speed auto transmission and awesome styling! I have over 500,000 kilometres on this old beastly 4x4 and it was running like a top, right up until the dreaded Pink Milkshake hit me!
Long term test review of the best SUV ever, the legendary 3rd Gen 4Runner!
Traveling the backroads of the Rocky Mountains in my 1997 4Runner, I was ALMOST stranded by the dreaded Pink Milkshake!! 🤠😲😢🏔
Part 2 - • 3rd Gen Toyota 4Runner... - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
If you are going to own old vehicles, make sure you have a bunch of them 👍😀🍺
Yessir
10 is a good number.
Including bikes and a dumptruck.
1-24-24. I got a 97 4runner limited V6 automatic with 126,000 miles on it. Bought it brand new. All the bells and whistles. Absolute tank. Wouldn't sell it with a gun to my head.
Quick edit. Took a toothbrush to it yesterday. She. Is. Clean.
I have a 01 Limited with 300k on the odometer, I was in the process of fixing all the weak points and had a new radiator and outboard trans cooler on the garage ready to go on when I got the dreaded pink shake. I flushed the cooling system and had no engine issues. I did a 4 full flushes on the trans (where I took the in and out lines to the cooler and put them in buckets to make sure it was fully flushed) and got about 10k miles out of that trans. By the time it finally failed I had found a used trans and transfer case on Facebook marketplace with just 90k on it. With a harbor freight trans jack it took most of a weekend to swap, been good as new since then.
I inherited my dad's '97 Toyota 4R. Happy to hear it's a great vehicle. When SUV camping in it and it worked out great.
Mine did that, no issues with the trans I flushed everything, replaced the radiator and installed a trans filter. Been fine ever since
Awesome video! Also appreciate the heads up. I've got 252k on my 2002. Hope to drive it forever.
My 99 has over 600k miles on original engine and transmission.
They are awesome machines! You should change out the radiator because that line will pop like mine did.
Just curious how often you’ve changed transmission fluid and diff fluids.
@@Gretzky2857 I just dropped the transmission pan every 60k miles never flushed it and changed the diff fluids every 100k.
Great video Jimmy! I absolutely love Toyotas! I can't see myself buying another brand. My weekend truck is the 2018 Tacoma , TRD Off Road Double Cab 4x4. The thing is a beast! I will never sell it. As I said before , about my Rav 4, that thing was basically unbreakable. Having 500k on your truck is unreal reliability! If there is an apocalypse, I am definitely choosing a Toyota truck to weather the storm!
They are awesome 👌. Hopefully, mine is repairable 😬
The room you filmed the intro in looks so cozy!
Thanks! It's a great room for evening fires and beer 🔥🍻 👌
I love 3rd gen porn! I own a 1998 at 330,000 and 2000 at 230,000 limited fully stock.keep your maintenance!💪
Subscribed!! I grew up drinking old Milwaukee beer....love it! Just bought a 1997 2.7 toyota tacoma 4x4 a few months back with 20k on the odo....flawless! Been driving Toyota's since 2001....now my whole family drives on. Timmy C Arizona
Thank you for the comment, and thanks for subscribing. That sounds like an awesome find. Congrats! I had a 96 tacoma with that engine and loved it. Will go forever, I'm sure 👌👍🍻
Hi Jimmie it’s still a great vehicle. I’ll guarantee you even with a problem it’s got you to where you wanted to go! You’ll have more problems with the newer model vehicles. Love the music and the beautiful scenery! Lots of room for your favorite beverage! Have a fantastic week.🍺🍺🍺❤️
Thanks, Nancy! I agree 💯 with you 👍👍. Hopefully, I can get it back on the road again. Have an awesome Sunday 👌 🍺🍺
Dude. Absolutely LOVE that camera. I shoot 35mm and it’s so rare to see other people shoot it. Mad respect
Thank you! I love film, shoot an old Leica M3 too. Happy shooting, film rules! Here's my M3

I have a '96 lifted on 33s, had a '99 and a '97
What a beast to reach that milestone and then 😪😨😰😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭, NO!!!!!!! Hope you can bring it back to life. I just bought a new one myself, wanted to get before they change the engine and turbo. Unreal how long they can keep going for.
Thanks for the comment, and congrats on your new 4Runner 👍🍺👌
Gosh, my 2000 with only 210,000 is just getting broken in. (Purchased from original owner 5 years ago with 165.000) Thanks for the share and encouragement 🎉
5vzfe is a legendary engine
That sucks, some of the Nissans have the same issue. Where the transmission line inside the radiator can leak into the coolant. I've seen where people hook up an external transmission cooler to prevent it from happening.
It seems to ony happen at high millage. 300k + miles. If I had known, I would have bought a new radiator long ago, and then it would be good for another 300k 🤞
Awesome vehicle!!
Thanks Ken👍 Hopefully it's repairable 😳🤞
@@JimmyMeatwhistle yes, I hope it is too! Then again you can also move on to vehicle 64 or whatever too if need be.🤣🤣
When the core of the rad is like sponge cake....time to recore or replace whole rad. I have never had to replace a rad yet on a Toyota.
Reverse is only needed for those that lack your Confidence, Jimmy. Happy trails Sir.
Haha, agreed, and thank you 👍🍺
404k on my 98 4runner original engine and transmission, i want a fleet of them
Crazy miles, i think u need 2 more cases in back then if u break down u wont run out for 2 days. I think the Toyota sienna is a great vehicle, it packs a ton of gear, you can live in it and its one of the most stable vehicles i ever driven. My friend just bought one and i bet he agrees, and he likes to drive all over. I'm thinking of making one my work vehicle. What upsets me is today doesn't sell north america some of their awesome work vans, they sell them to other countries. Very frustrating we have to buy work vehicles we don't want. Just like some motorcycles we cant buy in north America.
If I could buy a 70 series Land Cruiser, done deal! But, yeah, you're definitely right. There's some awesome vehicles out there that we can't get up here.
500k is pretty good, the rad has a lifespan though and should be replaced every decade or two, lol. Phorunner has some good videos on 3rd gens you should check out.
My 3rd gen is lifted 5 inches on 33 inch Mickey Thompson tires and it has 286k miles no lights on the dash !
Great review, what a great vehicle and had space for beer, guns and chainsaws, thats yeaah nan😆😅🤣!
All the best for you and good luck for the fix of this issue, crossing fingers and hope it turns out not to serious?! ( eposide, i was asking taxi drivers when commuting to and from the airport in Berlin, how reliable their cabs where, some responded 200 k, 400 k etc. One MB 250 ( 4 cyl) driver responded 1 M, i asked them woow these things live forever? He said nope " financially" when a gearbox fails they need to scrap it, engine repairs otherwise are no brainers.
Thanks, my friend 👍👍. Hopefully, it's fixable 😬. 1 M is awesome! Finders crossed! Thanks for the info, and have a great week 🍺🍺
@@JimmyMeatwhistle there is one 1 grand in WhiteHorse same model on Kijiji ( forrunner Alberta) ...this deletes Always 🤔
I don't understand why atf in coolant would in any way harm an engine. The transmission is shot, ok. But the engines' cooling system just got the best douche'n of its life. Flush it, call it good.
I ran a Chevy 350 with blown head gaskets (oil in coolant, no coolant in oil) for years. I always said it had a very well lubricated coolant system.
Also. 3rd gens are indestructible. You just need a manual. My 98 sr5 5 speed has 260k miles, and everything works mint. Current daily.
Good info, and I agree. I'm getting another transmission for it and keeping it going. 👍
ONE OF REGRET SELLING MY 99 4Runner 😢
It nice video, Question can I use the 2020 Tacoma wheel on my 3rd gen Without lifting my 4runner
Yes, you can. 🍻👍
@@JimmyMeatwhistle thank U. I have 3rd gen very good to own
@@JimmyMeatwhistle what wheel Size best for it… am thinking of 265/70/R17 …
Guns, beer, and a chainsaw now that’s precious cargo!! 3rd Gen Best Gen!👍🏼
Haha, agreed 👍. Thanks for the comment 🍻
Fun fact: Those sliding climate controls are now only available on 1 new Toyota, the Land Cruiser 70 Series.
The 70 series, my favorite of land cruisers. Wish I could get one here. Thanks for the info 👍🍻
@@JimmyMeatwhistle They are EXACTLY like the ones in your 4Runner so you'll feel right at home. Those retro climate controls are brilliant and I'm glad Toyota doesn't change them with all the refreshes the 70 Series gets.
In Canada, a vehicle has to be only 15 years old for it to be imported, not 25 like in the US so you Canadians will get your hands on some 70 Series Cruisers before the Americans can buy them all up. 😂
Where I live I could import a brand new one right now (for a big price in taxes) but they have to meet emissions standards of new vehicles so I can only import the 1GR-FE version, not the naturally aspirated 1HZ 4.2L IDI straight-six diesel that can run on used cooking oil, but it's still a bulletproof 70 Series.👍
Toyota just recently unveiled the 2.8L diesel version with a 6-speed auto which is basically the powertrain from the Hilux but those modern diesels don't age well with emissions control issues and they require only good quality diesel but they will likely make ones without diesel emissions hardware for Africa so you can even get one of those in 15 years.
Great info! I do see a few here, but they're usually right-hand drive. 1 day, I might look into bringing one over. But it has to be a left-hand drive for me. Mexico might be an option 🤔. I love diesel, but no fun in -30.
@@JimmyMeatwhistle Interesting to hear that there are some already where you are! Those RHD ones are likely straight from Japan. The Middle East and West Africa are all LHD drive markets. In Mexico they don't sell the 70 Series, not now and possibly not in a long time I'm not sure, but not too far away places like the US territory Puerto Rico has the 70 Series on sale. Further south, Central and South America also have it on sale.
Looks like the 1GR-FE is perfect for you then! Just a heads-up, it's the pre-Dual VVTi one with 237 hp, the one that was in the 4th gen 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, not the newest one in the 5th gen 4Runner making 267 hp. Torque is 266 lb-ft instead of 278 lb-ft. This is likely because it's from the 2009 update where it got an overhaul. Should still be a good bit more powerful than your 3rd gen and thst extra displacement means it has more torque.
Thanks again for all of this amazing info! I need one more than ever now 😆👍🍻
I'm just curious: How does this 4 runner compare to the gx470 in regards to daily driving?
Hi Jason, The GX wins. The 4Runner is awesome, but it's not in the same realm as the GX.
Them trans coolers cause more problems then there worth once they get higher miles ! You can fox that pretty easy !!!
Have a 2000 limited with fairly high mileage. It popped out a spark plug. We heli coiled that and now the HVAC control is wonky. The dealer can’t help but eBay has one for a ‘million dollars’! 😉😉😉😉. Hope I can get the trim off to remove The old and install the replacement
Hopefully, you can get it going again 🙏
My 99 limited has a wonky hvac control. You can get it to your desired temp but you gotta mess with it a bit.
My GF has a 2001 4Runner (2wd) and she gets asked all the time if she wants to sell it.
Bummer bud. I do prefer the updated 3rd gen. The cup holders alone are cherished by those who know. The dreaded strawberry milkshake sad.
Hopefully, I can revive it, fingers crossed 🤞 🔀👍👍
@@JimmyMeatwhistle gives you the chance to upgrade to the pistol shifter and better cup holders. I'd have offered you a manual but I got rid of it last month. Good luck sir.
I prefer the flat nose to the fat lip 3rd gen myself.
As a 98 sr5 owner, I can say the cupholder delema was almost worth the swap to a later style center console. Even considering it involves much more than a plastic bezel. I found the 3d printed ones on ebay work mint.
@@dand33911 I loved my 98 SR5 V6 manual! If the cancer hadn't killed it I'd made a trail rig out of it. Switching to a 02 limited is a lot more solid feeling and kinda posh. Man I miss that 3rd pedal.
@adamdaley8090
Mines a V6 5 speed 4x4, came out of Washington state. Rust free.
This 4runner or rx300?
If you want to go seriously off road, it has to be the 4Runner. If that doesn't matter to you, buy the Lexus.
Oh no. Transmission cooler in the rad sprung a leak
Yup! 😬 no good at all
Manual R150F >
😢
Yup, not good 😳
