    The 1000TL can be expanded to 768K of RAM so that the onboard video doesn't share any of the system RAM. Use SETUPTL /A for Advanced options. And did you try low-level formatting that MFM hard drive?

    9v on the 12V rail is normal for a power supply of the era when there is no actual load. If you hooked up a hard drive or something, the voltage should show closer to 12v.

    For anybody trying to use 1.44MB disks formatted as 720KB disks, my advice is to format them at 1.44MB first and confirm that there are no bad sectors, then tape over the hole and format them in the destination system before copying data to them. I know that 1.44MB drives can technically format at 1.44MB disk at 720KB, but I've never gotten good results that way.

  • @HabadzaKalfa

    Hmm, I recalled that it is not even necessary to block the hole on a disk but just to format it as DD, especially if the drive don't support HD. On the other hand recalling HD disks formatted into DD tend to become unstable more easily than real DD floppies. Memory is like those old hard drives though - there tend to come faults after all those years. Unfortunately I don't currently have any working PC with a 3.5" 720k drive, so can't check either. Unless if the Tandy drive behaves somehow different.

    can the tandy 100 TL be upgraded to use standard 1.44 mb floppies? And to use IDE hdds? It'd make it much easier to upgrade. But idk how much of a problem that OS has with those types of drives/controllers.

    • @RetroSpector78
      @RetroSpector78  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you will end up with multiple problems .... the floppy drive is powered through the floppy cable, so you would need to rewire the pins on your replacement floppy. (there are no 1.44mb floppy drives that tandy produces for this PC). Next is that the built-in DOS version will not be able to copy with 1.44mb floppies. You could in theory hook up a separate 8 bit floppy controller that supports 1.44mb drives, but you'll end up with software compatibility issues (for example the format command will not work). So it's not really worth the hassle IMHO. If I need a disk I just create a 720kb one, and the rest is done via the XT-IDE (plug and play solution). The computer does not have a built-in IDE controller, so would need to find some kind of 8 bit IDE controller with compatible hard drive (or a hard card). Both will not be easy to find.

    • @NerdlyPleasures

      Yes, the TL can use standard 1.44MB floppies, but you will need a floppy controller on an expansion card, the built-in floppy controller can't work with 1.44MB floppies, but it can be disabled. You can use an IDE HDD, but you will need a more capable card than that shown in the video.

    Is at least memory bus 16-bit?

    • @RetroSpector78
      @RetroSpector78  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure there is a 16-bit memory data bus on the mainboard where up to 768kb of ram can be addressed. but any expansion beyond that would have to go over the 8-bit ISA expansion slots. Also, due to the size limitations of the case, one cannot add most common memory expansion cards anyway. I think you'll always have this mix of XT style computing with a more "modern" AT style 286 cpu. But it remains a very cool machine and enjoyable experience if you know the limitations and don't try to force your way around them.

I know that the TL/2 has a built in XT-IDE interface, but this one relies on an external card / interface to hook up a hard drive.
