I am Swedish and my great father (my grandfather's father) was one of a thousand Swedish volunteers who traveled to Finland's front lines during World War II and fought with our Finnish brothers.
@@helpponimi7821 I don't know. I thought so because one person helping in the war wouldn't have changed much imho. And also because of your history with Sweden I thought maybe it was sarcasm thanking them. But anyways, I'm not either Finnish or Swedish, so I don't really know. Sorry if I sounded disturbing.
@@malolelei3937 Ok I guess I get that. Where are you from btw? But yeah Sweden helped us immensely with the weaponry they sent us and with the volunteers and we really do appreciate that. And also while we were ruled my Sweden us Finns were never treated that bad and there had been only one instance of rebellion against the Swedish crown by Finns even through they ruled over us for more than 700years. We kind of see Sweden as an annoying brother I guess. But yeah thanks for asking it’s nice that someone’s interested in Finland in that way considering our insignificance :D
I am from Ukraine and someone told me that Finland's history is similar to us, so I'm here (all our troubles are from our common neighbour). I wish I knew about you earlier. Hope I could visit Finland one day❤️
As russian I feel much more respect to Finland than to ukraine. Because Fins and their culture is one of the most ancient. They are our historical neighbors, and we have the same historical lands. At the same time more than 60% of "Ukrainian culture" is russian culture, Ukrainian lands is historicaly Russian lands, all Ukrainian cities are built by Russians. Ukrainians are historicaly poor
my great-grandfather was a Finnish refugee, and my grat grandmother was Ukrainian! I'm sure the two bonded over the terrible events going on in their homeland ❤
With so many TH-cam videos these days being stretched to 15 minutes while their entire content could be stated in five sentences, it is a breath of fresh wind to see Mr History doing the exact opposite - and doing it so incredibly well. I think I'll spend several days going through these Super Quick History -videos. Thank you!
Learning everything I can about this beautiful country! Also singing you guy’s language is freaking hard! Like so many Rs to roll and then breaking up the the syllables AND singing fast! 😂
Hell yeah…amorphis is probably my favourite band ever…and Finland is the land of heavy metal! (Atleast in the past 20 years)too many awesome bands come from there…Nightwish, Insomnium, Korpiklaani, HIM, Children of Bodom etc
As a Fin, I must correct one thing. That Turku fire did happen, but was not the reason the capitol was switched over to Helsinki. Those events were merely happening around the same time frame. Capitol was changed in 1812 and Turku fire happened at 1827, so the fire could not have been the reason. The real reason was, that Russians did not like the fact that Finland's capitol Turku was so close by to their mortal enemy Sweden, so they moved it.
I just wanted to add that Finland never was some backwater colony of sweden, it was very much part of sweden for hundreds of years. And yes, pretty much everyone not noble in sweden at the time was a poor miserable sob.
Thank you for the quick history lesson as an American of Finnish descent. I know almost nothing of my grandfather's ancestorial homeland. Other than the Winter War my great grandfather came to America in 1911 And that he was part of the Sammie people.
I must just add the point that Finland was not an opressed part of Sweden. It was as much a natural part of Sweden as other swedish territories outside Stockholm like Dalarna or Härjedalen. Even more than some I would argue, since the southern parts of Sweden were added much later in history and the people there rebelled before giving up their danish identity. For sweden the loss if Finland in 1809 was traumatic, as it was a natural part of the country, not by any means a colony. This can for example be seen in the swedish commander von Döbelns speach to the finnish troops of the swedish army who were about to return to a now russian Finland after the peace treaty and the swedish loss of Finland. "...Finns! Brothers! If my words could be cealed with tears from my eyes, they would fall like a stream, and each drop assure you of my reverence, my friendship."
In Finland we have a joke about Swedish war heros...not so many pages in that book...But that is true that there was about 8000 swedes fighting for Finland. Thank you...
Very informative and nicely done. I'm also interested in pre-Christian Finland, and the goings on before and leading up to the Viking age of their western neighbors. I'm also curious about the linguistic relationship between the Finns and the Estonians. Although their languages are related, I'm told they are not mutually intelligible (in stark contrast to the case with their Scandinavian neighbors).
Finnish and Estonian started separating from each other roughly 2000 to 1500 years ago, meanwhile Old Norse roughly separated into modern Scandinavian languages in the 14th and 15th centuries.
about swedish crusades in finland, i think historians today say it was more just colonized slowly by traders and swedish settlers rather than a crusade. probably swedish nationalist historians back in the day exaggerated the colonization by describing it as a dramatic and honorful crusade
Well, "Sweden" didn't exactly meddle because Sweden didn't exist back then as it does today. But ok, I get that this is a simplification to get on with the story.
my family "moved" to Canada in 1911... and the older I get, the more I understand. It's interesting to realize your ancestors were severely oppressed and came to the new world because their homeland was overthrown 🥲 (I have roots in Kivennapa, Sortavala, and Mäkisalo, which are all under Russian power today)
One significant story was left from video. 1700-1721 war in which Russia killed entire villages in parts of Finland (some even claim that 1/3rd of Finns were killed in those 21 years) and took probably even as many as 30,000 people as slaves and some of them were sold to Turkey & Persia.

tbh, finnish and ukrainian history is not very similar at all. The only shared thing is that russia has attacked and occupied both
