I live in SE Asia and monitor lizards are not that rare in the suburbs. You might get one wondering into your yard once every couple of years. They are no match for local dog breeds (medium sized) which will attack immediately once they catch a whiff of one though. if it's just one dog, the lizard will usually manage to escape, but if it's two (or more) they'll just alternate leaping in and out from different directions until the lizard is completely exhausted and shredded.

There are many species of this group called monitor lizards. With a huge range in size. It appears to me that regardless of size range and colour differences that they are really a homogenous group, with the same shape and basic lifestyle and predation methods. I'm not sure about what was meant in the possum scene but goannas in Australia are very good at climbing trees and predating birds' nests.

Venomous snakes are dangerous because of their venom alone. Some monitor species, if not most or all, are immune to said venom. When you take that away from the snake, they’re not deadly anymore.

Fairly common sight in Australia. Funny to watch in some areas where they scare the hell out of tourists. The big goanna's often come out of the bush and slowly make their way to where you eat....a scary sight for most people, but especially tourists. The smell of a barbeque chicken at a picnic is irrisistible and easy prey.
Dont bother them and you have no problem. Incredible hunters on land, up trees, in burrows and they can swim like a crocodile.

The biggest one i encounter is as big as 7 year old children, even at that big they will 100% run if they saw you. That guy in the video, he probably poke the lizard to much, that is why it attack agresively.

I once stomped the living daylights out of one of these when it attacked a cat. It was killing a cat in pretty much exact way in this video, we tried to pull it off, it would let go, so at that point, I just had to break its spine. I think I killed it in the first or second stomp. We took the cat to the vet, needed tons of stitches. Monitors are very powerful but I noticed they have weak backs, I didn't expect it die so easily, especially because it was atleast 20-25 pounds.
