I couldn't disagree more about the dash comment. The TFT is absolutely fine for the bike. It's not a real retro, and it's not a Triumph. It's an extended MT 09, that is totally modern, with some strange bits (seat) tacked onto it. It is not anything like the Kawa 900RS, a totally different mentality. Get used to it. Great bike!
Tons of data jammed into a screen that's hard to see under sunlight, much less with a layer of dust. I'm sure after 1 year ownership that screen will be scratched to death. 10-15 years ago motorcycles had a nice analogue tachometer which was easy to discern in a split second, right beside a nice large LCD screen with a light background and nice bold information, also easy to see and read in any light. Displays outside of BMW, KTM, Triumph are going backwards in terms of legibility and aesthetics. This is not an improvement. This panel on the '21 MT and '22 XSR is 50% blank space for indicator lights and the rest is hard to read. I bet the electronics engineers at Yamaha don't even ride motorcycles, probably a bunch of vaping millineals obsessed with their smart phones.
He said it before: have to decide where to spend in order to arrive at a desired final cost. Sure they can make them better, but they're going to charge you more for the improved quality. Maybe Yam will buy a custom set company that will allow them to offer better seats with less overhead.
I think I am in the minor. I love the black. It looks more mean to me and I just can't get over the wheel colour being different to the fork. And it's soft looking. Anyway it's a great bike.
A lot better looking than MT-09 SP, and confident it isn't a wheelie monster. On my test ride with MT, I rolled on the throttle moderately out of a corner and immediately came up. Thanks Toad for the great reviews!!!
Great review as usual. I like it. PS: after watching a few other reviews, this bike is really an attractive proposition. I wish Yamaha would have added higher quality suspension and charged for it.
I don't get why people act like this bike is retro. there is nothing retro about it except a round headlight. I agree with both of your nitpicks. the seat could be more comfortable. and the screen could be bigger and nicer.
I think they can be fun to use if they’re smooth on the downshift, as well as the up shift. But I wouldn’t pay over the odds as an extra; I like to change with the clutch lever. My mind’s eye is telling me a knackered gearbox will ensue the a jerky downshifter.
This seems like a better package than the new Monster....sadly and happily. Lower price, better components (adj suspension), cruise control, more mid range power. Also out does the triumph trident it seems for the price
Oh it's much more bike than the Trident. Spec, power, speed, handling, it's got the Triumph beaten on all accounts. The Duc', that's a trickier proposition.
@TheDfelan I chose the xsr900 over the cati. Paid more than a 22 monster price. Reasons. Just a better bike. Safety, no heating your body issues. Just as fast and Yamaha's are just cheaper and more reliable long haul. Reselling value not so much. People quiver when they see a ducati. It's like the Ferrari of cars. No regrets. Loving it.
The black one looks far nicer, to me, than the blue. The blue just exaggerates the fussy bits on the bike that I really don't like...and that weird seat. What a machine, however. Totally love it. Big time. Like the MT 09 but with more stability. Perfect.
i have a deposit down on this bike. hopefully will have it by the end of June. I love the look, but Im a little concerned about the taillight.. while it looks tidy tucked under the seat Im worried its not alot of break light for cars to notice when slowing or stopping in front of them. perhaps an aftermarket flashing break light would help.
@@visordown they pushed it back to august.. I didn’t want to wait so I took my deposit back. I purchased a KTM duke 890 instead, it was available and the dealer was 5 miles from my house.
I had a 2016 in brushed silver. Overall I think that was more in line with the idea of a modern retro - consistent styling elements and cohesive with the circle elements in the trim, rear light, headlamp and instrument cluster. This update has abandoned that I feel. Shame. The original XSR was a wonderful machine to ride and look at (in my view). The power, tech and handling upgrades applied to the existing styling would have been enough maybe.
Have to say, the original XSR was the MT09 Sport Tracker. That special edition was in my opinion, a market test for the XSR. Just about to trade my 2016 Sport Tracker in against a tech black 2022 MT10, I'm tired of a jet engined Pogo Stick trying to kill me every time I go for a ride, mine has ABS and that's it, it's a pretty raw bike but that was why I bought it. I had a boring Kawasaki 650 twin before that and this felt like a party on two wheels in comparison. The base model suspension though... It's sh1t over 80mph!
I also own the 2016 XSR900 and agree with you. Yamaha made a revolution with thie new model... and they did not need to. However I would buy the new one because it is a beauty.
Absolutely love it and your review is bang on!! 👌🏻👍🏻 But that seat is absolutely hideous let alone what your saying about the comfort of it? 🤮 + surely they could have made a better job of the headlight it should be a round one but not looking like that? 🤮 Great review tho!! 👌🏻👍🏻
Not for me. I ride aggressively until the tank is bone dry. If my butt already hurts after an hour then there is something seriously wrong. I‘ll get the MT-09.

The blue is too blingy and the black is too plain. A little gold on the black one would be perfect! Ordered a 2024 today😊

Agree and some analogue clocks like R9T or z900rs as that finish’s the bike
Forks are fully adjustable and should be fine, upgrading the shock is easy enough
Putting a nitron with preload adjuster on mine it’ll be great
I do wish they had tried harder on the dash.
True, but at what expense. You'd have to be really into it to do that - on stock its not too bad

great if not best review yet! curious question, what riding boots are those?
You recommend this over the XSR 900 of the 2019? Is it worth the extra money?
What about the Look?
Could you compare it to the 2022 MT-10? Which one is less gressive and easier to ride in town? Thanks,
I could get past the the dash. Yamaha should offer a comfort seat option.
Where did you put the beer when you were riding?

Like the pipe hanging off the black model you're standing with. Is that a factory extra?
Yep, official Yamaha accessory.
How tall are you please? I'm 6' with 32" inseam. Looking for sizing. Thanks!
Excellent review and agree with everything you said….apart from the quick shifter. Does it do the job on this bike, especially downshifting?
