- Installing Windows 11 Arm on a Microsoft Lumia 950XL. This is my second attempt to install Windows 11. The first time was with a ultra micro Sony VAIO. This time I'm installing on a 6 year old Lumia phone.

If Microsoft can resurrect the Lumia lineup with modern hardware, especially the latest chipset, I'd be way more than happy to leave my Windows laptop behind. Continuum really shows a huge promise as a real pocket PC.
I was disappointed when Microsoft stopped the Lumia. Even more disappointed when I heard Microsoft killed the release of the Surface Mini just days before it's launch in 2014.
@maya I'm with you. I used to be an Android user before switching to Windows Phone since July 2016 and I'm still using my Lumia 950 as my daily driver to this day. Now that we have Windows on ARM, we really should have a brand new Lumia with latest SOC.
Samsung has pushed dex for more than half a decade. Yet most user still consider it's more like a gimmick rather than function. The prerequisites are far from realistic, if I can place a display and a dock and a kb/mouse in some remote location, why bother even comnect my phone to it, a laptop can run native windows apps already.
@@vertujoe2886 That's the problem with Android. It's still not a true desktop replacement, especially Windows. Windows on ARM may not have a sizeable catalogue of native software compared to Windows on x86, but you can still run desktop softwares in the first place. In Google, only ChromeOS can do that and it too has Play Store support. It does beg the question: Why don't Google converge both Android and ChromeOS together?
@@farishanafiah8461oogle further hampered Android from being a full time desktop replacement with their scoped storage for Android 11+. Every now and then I cannot download certain files with certain browsers... have to run to the old faithful Windows X64 laptop to do the deed. Get an updated Lumia like phone with a brick of a battery like my Android (my brick Android can happily be on MS Team video meetings all day use only 7 Ah of the 13 Ah battery).
I still miss my Lumia 1520 on Win10Mobile... In all its yellow polycarbonate glory...
I think the lack of RAM is the main issue alongside the overheating. I have the same OS on my 950XL and it overheats a lot, so I ended up adding a CPU cooler touching the backside of the phone (without the cover). I think I tried some games, but the directx doesn't work too well because the gpu drivers were tailored for the mobile version and they have some artifacts on the standard windows.
I've been trying games with very little success at even getting them started. Your CPU cooling solution sounds intriguing, thanks for sharing.
I think running on battery(especially with a high load, and when it's more discharged) will also contribute to overheating, as the battery itself will create heat when discharging. Depending on how the charging circuit works, it might not be a big difference with the charger/power supply connected though. It'd be ideal to run it without a battery(external power supply only), but phones rarely seem to allow that without modification.
most phones actually dissipate the heat through the screen as the backside is usually covered by hands while the screen is only covered by fingertips
Can this phone be used without the battery installed?
Hey randomly found your video - thanks for trying it out! This project starts as a troll (because someone claimed they have a similar set-up on turned out to be RDP on iPod touch) when I want to kill time in university, and later the situation was out of my control (I did firmware and some initial driver bring-ups) :D
I like that this video seems like click bait, then turns out to be real :)
My first Lumia 950 just arrived, thanks for the inspiration Janus!
I hope you enjoy the experience!
Hello Janus, I must say I was skeptical when I saw the thumbnail, though after watching your video I immediately subscribed and turned all the notifications on, I even went to follow on istagram so I can see your projects on the go. At the start of the video at 11 seconds I was thinking "Continuum, I really miss that on my Windows 10 phone", but at 23 seconds I was surprised that you actually have Windows 11 on your phone! I think many people have always dreamed of having mobile windows on their phones and connecting it to a monitor. The Windows 7 F-07C was the first Windows device that caught my attention back in October of 2009, sadly it was only available in Japan. In 2014 I bought an old Motorola Lapdock & phone, it really did the job sans Windows. The Asus Padfone integrates itself into a tablet which is really cool. Most Samsung phones now have DeX so you can connect to a Smart Monitor or any larger monitor. Coninuum was introduced to Windows 10 phones, but I believe only the Lumia 950 and 950 XL had it included in an additional purchase package. I had to buy separately which I still have but I accidentally dropped my Alcatel Idol 4S. Anyhow, thank you so much for making this video. I will definitely check out your other projects you have worked on.
Hi, It sounds like we share an interest in pocketable computers that can also transform in size :) F-07C ;) Thank you for your kind comments. I'm not great at telegraphing upcoming projects. But I'm slowly learning how to be a better communicator.
I've been exploring SIM cards recently, there is a story here I need to tell, I hope I can make a compelling video out of it. Please feel free to share your thoughts and thank you for watching.
@@JanusCycle its awesome to see a reply from you. I agree with an interest on pocketablke computers, I wanted the F(x)tec, never got it, LOL. Currently using the Titan Pocket, though I wish it had windows and be a clamshell like GPD Windows UMPC! Thank you for your reply comment. I definitely will follow your work and projects. Have an awesome week!
The reason I watched your video was because I was stumbling over my old 950xl. I was really happy for it, I was moving away from it when all the apps was fleeing from the it like rats and it was useless. It sad to see a soo beefy device just laying and collect dust. I like the tiles and the swipe where all the apps was in a list, it was making more sense than (win 3.1) icons placed over a picture. Maybe it can play total annihilation. 🙂
This is all the Surface Duo needs to be. Sitting here with my Galaxy Fold 4 wishing it were as capable as a Lumia 950XL.
I wish that Windows Mobile/Phone was still around. I would buy one if they were available today, and could link it to my computer.
That's why I'm Glad that Samsung have Dex. Would be killer features if Dex will able to emulate and execute x64 software
my dream is windows phone
The future for old mobiles should be as programmable hubs. They could be made to work the way the Pi or Arduino does. With the IDE programming environment built in and with libraries developed to support the sensors typical of most phones, along with anything else you might plug into its USB ports.. Their usefulness would go beyond the scope of the mobile phone, to work on or off the network.
I would love it if manufactures opened up their old devices for new uses.
@@JanusCycle The manufacturers won't, they have no reason to, but your average geek might. This would go beyond getting Linux to run on Android or Android to run on IOS. That old phone has the potential to become a powerful control surface.
Hi, thanks a million for the video, it's really helpful. I'm a bit curious though, is it possible for any of the Linux Distros to be installed on this device?
There are some versions of Debian that can be installed. But driver support for the hardware components is still very limited at the moment. It's more like a proof of concept install.
Very exciting !! Loved that Lumia when it came out on the market, unfortunately, it didn't have the success deserved.
You learn new things everyday. Go pack go. 😆
I have a non-XL 950 running 10 and I've been thinking about upgrading it to 11, but the performance issues I've faced with the standard 950 under WOA have kind of made me disinterested. I'll need to pick up a 950 XL at some point since the hardware support is so much better under WOA.
I was considering a 950. But then I heard the 950 XL runs much better and focused on getting the XL.
No surprise given that the 950 runs on a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 chipset whereas the 950 XL runs on an octa-core Snapdragon 810 chipset. The LumiaWoA devs still couldn't get all six cores working on the 950. By contrast, all eight cores in the 950 XL is working just fine.
@@farishanafiah8461 last time I checked under windows 11 the issue was nearly fixed though not officially
Writing on a Windows on ARM laptop myself right now - very cool project. Is there information on GPU drivers, is it "just" the microsoft basic display adapter or does it actually run a Driver for the Adreno GPU. Would be interesting if it runs older DX9 games and such :D
Unfortunately there is no good GPU support and development has stopped for this project. I'm really glad I have this phone with Win 11 ARM on it though.
@@JanusCycle Thats unfortunate, as the emulation layer is very impressive in my optinion. I am so satisfied with Windows 11 on ARM, it became my main system (ThinkPad X13s I got on sale). I tried playing Portal to test DirectX and it worked without hesitation.
Thanks also for all your other content too, just watched the Libretto expansion video, and became very keen on trying out the Adlib tracker for myself. Great stuff, ty!
My man loves his Lumia.
Cool project. I suggest you to get the original dock. Those can be had for peanuts, and the kit is worth it for the power adapter alone. You will see how USB-C adapters were supposed to be when invented. Not the current we leave buying an adapter to the client, which ends up getting some cheap ass piece of crap at the super market.
Also would really recommend to give it a go as a phone. The 950XL with Windows 10 is my daily driver. Camera is top notch, and still a breeze to use compared to fancy shit Apple invents, and pictures are better than on anything up to the 13 pro max (no comparison to the 14 Pro available yet). It really forces you to bring back phone use to sane amounts. Telegram is still updated and my prefered messenger anyway. It also hosts a very active user group delivering new apps and tools, even for Windows Phone 8.1
Do you mean you use your 950XL with Win 10 Mobile? I really like Windows 10 Mobile. I've always thought the interface looks better than iOS and Android, and live tiles look and work really well.
I'm just enjoying the novelty of having desktop Windows on such a small device at the moment.
Something I want to try one day is rooting Windows Mobile on a Lumia 1520. Not sure what that will do but it sounds interesting to try.
@@JanusCycle Yes, just the way it was ment to be. Enjoy it everyday. The interface is such a breeze compared to Android (yikes) and iOS (impossible).
I’m really pleased to hear that Windows 10 Mobile still has dedicated users in 2022. The 950XL is an impressive phone and I’m really glad I finally got one.
That is a good point, though if you ever look to switch to Android, there are Live Tile and other Lumia-style things you can apply to make an Android feel more like Lumia.
Even better, get a Samsung and use Dex with a monitor and keyboard setup and boom - PC experience.
You can disable hardware accelerator in Edge Browser
Are you able to reconnect the phone to the PC and detect it with WPInternals and WOA Deployer? I tried this a few years back with W10, but I'm no thinking about trying again with W11. But, I can't reflash the device.
Also, a video on how to install the other aditinal tools they have on the WOA website would be interesting, like the shell, call and tex, USB-C drivers and so on...
hey mate, thanks for the vid.
could u tell me if the phone is getting warm or hot? is browsing and office work possible? and is it smooth or having errors or delays or something?
I really want to use it as a mobile pc with a second screen like you. its so cool!
thanks bud
Yes is does get warm and the battery life is not that great. The system is laggy but quite usable. Microsoft's Edge browser runs really well because it is native ARM. Also Microsoft have a native ARM version of Office that would probably run quite well.
Since I enjoy pushing the limits, I am using a developer preview version of Windows on here to test the 64bit emulation support. Running regular desktop software that is not ARM based can be flaky. I did a video yesterday testing out more of this computer including a browser comparison.
As a general use computer I'm not sure I can recommend this setup. Though as a browser and office computer using ARM software it is coming close.
Things I would like to see to make this better are a lite version of Windows 10/11 and improved power management. That would help it run faster with less heat and longer battery life.
@@JanusCycle Great i will watch the new video.
One more question: how is the battery life when its not used? i mean can it proceed 1 day if i only use it when plugged into a powercable through usb c port? does it get warm in standby?
Also a little hint: maybe u could write the words lumia 950xl and windows 11 in the name. that way it would be part of the search: "Lumia 950 windows 11" (For someone who wants to do the same installation like you did that would be th searchterm, i think.)
th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=lumia+950+windows+11
You helped me a lot, thank you buddy
@@afgbehzadable Standby is good and doesn't get warm. I think it would last all day on standby. I could test it for you if that helps?
If I can help with something then let me know.
Please keep in mind I'm coming from a tinkerer perspective. Running Windows 11 on Lumia is more for people that enjoy messing about with technology.
While I would like to see someone get some proper use out of this, I'm not that experienced in how this would be to use long term. I'm keen to help, I'm just not sure how useful this stuff is.
Thanks for the title search tip. But in the search you linked, this video does appear in fourth position! But the follow up video doesn't appear :( I'm hoping the follow up is suggested by TH-cam after this one is watched.

1 question, could you send a link to that simplecom hub you have? I need the same one!
The hub I have came from msy.com.au they are only in Australia though. I hope your Lumia 950 XL upgrade goes well. For me it's a really interesting way to experience Windows 11 for the first time.
3:34 Probably, the OS itself isn’t up to date (with the last 2019 patches)
Well, you could run some old pc emulators (PDP-11, Mac68000, 8086) or do some benchmarks (I don't think native benchmark exist yet)
I found benchmarking software with both an x64 and an ARM version, very interesting.
But You need last version on windows 10 mobile 1709 to running store and other stuff
Can you run x86_64 or arm64/arm32 app? If you can i would buy it secondhand from ebay sellers
Also can you run 3dmark legacy benchmarks
Yes, it can run x86_64 and arm32/64 software. BUT the gpu/graphics don't work with games. I have tried many games and benchmarks but they don't start :(
