i will have to cover this in my next rules video cause i've already seen a few comments about it. fangren maurader does indeed work with tokens, because they do hit the graveyard.
This is the best MTG series on the internet. I get no greater joy while playing magic than playing one of these seemingly jank cards and everyone at the table saying “Where do you even find that!?!?”
Hey man ever since I subscribed to your channel I’ve been loving this series soooo much. I know other creators have similar stuff, but 90% of the time it’s cards I’ve seen already. You truly surprise me with cards and it makes deck building so much more fun. Ty and please keep the content rolling. Shoutout to last video for Ertai’s Meddling
@@edhdeckbuildingHi demo, I know you cover more of old school cards (for a good reason) is there any chance that unique cards from precons make an appearance in the series?
It sort of is… but at the same time, if someone casts Old Gnawbone and then attacks without it being removed, that tends to be the win unless it’s their only creature, so it is a very win-more card in that scenario.
I play an Ygra deck. She makes ALL creatures food tokens in addition to being a creature and gains +2/+2 for every food leaving the battlefield to graveyard. This Fangren would be a sick combo..
Faith Healer is amazing with Mazzy. I use all the vow/goad enchantments with enchantress cards. Changing what they are attached to and drawing and gaining life rules
I ran Faces of the Past in my WIlhelt deck, and it was always a banger; 1, no one knew wtf it was, and 2, just dominant when you're already saccing your tribe. Toss in a phyrexian altar, tower, or Ashnod's, and your creatures untap whenever you'd like them to. I wasn't aware that Excavation existed, but now that I am, it's getting slotted into my Muldrotha build. Since I'm just playing lands from my GY anyway, there's no loss here. Thanks, Demo - stay awesome.
When it comes to high creature counts in graveyards don't forget Crypt of Agadeem and Songs of the Damned. It's only your own graveyard, but you'll be swimming in black mana!
Regarding Excavation remember to sac the land you just tapped, if your playing lands from graveyards this has very nice synergy 👌 specially if you have multiple land drops per turn. Love it!
I have Faith Healer in both Anikthea and in Yenna, and she does work. In Anikthea, you sometimes have to just get cards on the board until you find a token doubler or get some serious self-mill going on. In Yenna, same with finding a token doubler, but also you can get extra value from sacrificing a copy of O-Ring type cards or curses, and being able to make a new copy. And the lifegain can synergise with Angelic Accord, Blossoming Bogbeast, Trudge Garden, and more. Lifegain is _very_ underrated.
PLEASE show Feldon’s Cane some love on the next episode. Card is very underrated and is one I put in nearly all of my decks now! Another great episode! I have some new tech to add to Anikthea now! YAY! 🎉
@ more often than not I only need the shuffling effect once to refill my deck. Elixir is certainly a good card. But having a 1 mana 1 time effect to shuffle graveyard without any additional resources has worked wonders for me.
If you haven't seen titania's song, check that out too. Hilarious way to make the treasure decks go sit in the corner and think about what they've done.
9:44 with Fanatical Devotion, you can target your creature when putting the ability on the stack and use that same creature to pay for it. The creature still dies, but it will get around exile board wipes or targeted removal that grains the player another effect for destroying it from the same card. Drawing a card, gaining life, etc...
Faces of the past was one of my project cards for a long long time. Bought a playset of it a decade ago and was always trying to make it work in a deck for some real synergy. It never really made the cut over the years through where the effect was just not consistent enough to make it worth the slot. My Merieke Ri Berit tapping effects tribal deck (containing Arcanis the Omnipotent) was close but without the actual types being shared natively or trying to push in changeling effects to force them it wouldn’t ever untap me consistently enough. Then because it is a control strategy getting the tap down for my opponents playing tribal to clear the way for attacks wasn’t really that useful either. When Hylda of the Icy Crown came out it finally had its moment. That is where it finally got to shine
I use faith healer in my Bruna Light of Alabastor deck. It's a house. Go to combat phase, sac all the auras to gain a ton of life, attack with Bruna and return them all attached to her. Also deters attacing me since if they do I can do the same thing before blocking so it ends up gaining me more life than I lose. Most instant graveyard hate is triggered abilities on board, so it's very rare you get caught out.
I play Faith Healer in my Hanna deck. I used to run Auratog, but gaining life is usually better than the buff. Main thing being mostly sacrificing Stasis or whatever hindering enchantments during opponent's turn to avoid the drawbacks myself and then recur it during my turn with Hanna and play it again.
Fanatical devotion works against exile but in a different way. Instead of regenerating the creatures that you want to keep, you sacrifice them so they at least stay in the graveyard. Not as widely useful as regenerating a dying creature, but white does OK with recursion, and orzhov does great at it.
Demo, here's a card I don't think you've brought up before: Laccolith Rig. One mana red Aura. If enchanted creature is blocked, you may have it deal damage to any creature in lieu of combat damage. You can enchant opponent's creatures to prevent that creature from doing damage and even kill their creatures. Doesn't matter if the creature has infect or trample or deathtouch, the blocking creature is fine.
12:11 Been in my Korvold and Ygra deck for a while! It’s funny how not many people know about the card! Another great card nobody really plays is Malignus and idk why! It’s pretty much always a 20/20, and is great against life gain!
With how much the format has changed over the years, I thought an interesting video you might be interested in making is *what some colors can’t do or can do badly* while showing the few cards that can do something well off color
Bestow is also better than an aura, because if they remove the target before it resolves on the stack, it stops being an aura and enters as an enchantment creature rather than going to the graveyard.
Dunno if you mentioned Levitation ever but it’s AWESOME in any deck that doesn’t have a lot of fliers but if they WERE fliers would be lethal. 2 colorless 2 blue. “Creatures you control have flying”
Fangren marauder has won me so many games on its own in my Ognis treasure deck. Even just sacrificing 3-5 treasures will make your life total so hard to touch.... But in that deck I can easily dump 10-12 or more with it on the board.
If someone has a Sac Outlet for Faces of the Past and a good "amount" of Persistent Petitioners, they could mill someone out especially if Bruvac is on the feild, you dont need the minimum amount (16) you can have less than 16 and sac another "Human" / "Advisor" and just repeat the Milling.
Short questions: Fangren Marauder: Whenever an artifact is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may gain 5 life. If i remember correctly Tokens never are put into a graveyard if they die/sacrifice which makes this card useless against those juicy treasure etc tokens. Is this correct?
Question about Eye of Singularity with treasures: can’t the player sacrifice each individual treasure for mana in response to the Eye of Singularity’s trigger? Or since it’s a mana ability, does it even use the stack at all? Great video as always! Just got an Excavation for my Slogurk deck 😈
Fangren maurader i have in a beast tribal deck with klothys as well as golgari ich tekik deck. Fanatical devotion im running in my archangel avacyn deck and kasmir lone wolf deck. Take a look at laccolith rig, glaring spotlight and martyrs cause, might be good for your next video ;)
I'm surprised you didn't mention Azami, Lady of Scrolls with Faces of the Past. If you have four Wizards total and chump block with just one of them, you can easily turn 4 draws in a turn cycle into 7.
With Eye of Singularity (6:23) in play and someone wheels with a Smothering Tithe: Will the controller of Smothering Tithe able to float the mana from treasures as they enter and get sacrificed?
There's an old Tempest card called Ancient Runes that I think needs more love, maybe it is used but I don't hear people talking about it, it really screws over anyone who plays a lot of artifacts or artifact tokens.
I'm not sure that token artifacts would trigger Fangren Marauder's ability, as they don't go into a graveyard. Faces of the past is definitely one I'm looking to pick up though.
At one point a had this Animar deck that was ape tribal (except for the commander obviously) and i ran faces of the past that way my board would untap if i lost an attacker or a creature to removal, using it for control against another tribal deck had not been to relevant during the deck's lifespan sadly😅
If you're playing a deck that revolves around combat in some way, has black in its colour id and aren't running Dauthi Trapper, you're doing yourself a disservice. Giving Obeka shadow has netted me so many upkeeps in so many games it's silly. Just last week I got a victory with Armageddon Clock thanks to Obeka+Trapper. Armageddon Clock! [edit] also, if you've got an Ygra, Eater of All deck and you're not running Fangren Marauder... why?
i will have to cover this in my next rules video cause i've already seen a few comments about it. fangren maurader does indeed work with tokens, because they do hit the graveyard.
Working in software development don’t have much time for magic anymore but I still take the time to watch these every time they come out🎉
This is the best MTG series on the internet. I get no greater joy while playing magic than playing one of these seemingly jank cards and everyone at the table saying “Where do you even find that!?!?”
The best part about commander! No one is impressed when I play a deck full of staples
💯💯💯
Banger of a series. It makes my day when TH-cam pings me to say one of these is ready to play. Some absolute gems have made it into my decks
Hey man ever since I subscribed to your channel I’ve been loving this series soooo much. I know other creators have similar stuff, but 90% of the time it’s cards I’ve seen already. You truly surprise me with cards and it makes deck building so much more fun. Ty and please keep the content rolling. Shoutout to last video for Ertai’s Meddling
this series got my channel off the ground. i'm glad i revisited it for newer viewers.
@@edhdeckbuildingHi demo, I know you cover more of old school cards (for a good reason) is there any chance that unique cards from precons make an appearance in the series?
@@dariocampanella7992 so i'm doing a video in the new year looking back at old commander sets (11, 13, 14, 15).
Eye of Singularity to destroy a lot of shocks, command tower and whatever. And Vesuva can be used as a strip mine, essentially.
Fangren looks like an absolute BEAST in an Old Gnawbone deck
It sort of is… but at the same time, if someone casts Old Gnawbone and then attacks without it being removed, that tends to be the win unless it’s their only creature, so it is a very win-more card in that scenario.
I play an Ygra deck. She makes ALL creatures food tokens in addition to being a creature and gains +2/+2 for every food leaving the battlefield to graveyard. This Fangren would be a sick combo..
Excavation is sooo powerful in my Esper Landfall/Land sacrifice deck! Pairs incredibly well with Cosmic intervention to double dip on the draws.

2:52 a good thing to note is that it's tutorable with Flamekin Harbinger
I have Faith Healer in both Anikthea and in Yenna, and she does work. Agreed. Best edh mtg channel out there. 👍
I love fanatical devotion, so underrated. Great video!
PLEASE show Feldon’s Cane some love on the next episode. Card is very underrated and is one I put in nearly all of my decks now! Another great episode! I have some new tech to add to Anikthea now! YAY! 🎉
IMHO, it has gotten powercrept by Elixir of Immortality, but the differences can be important (like: not being drawn again)
@ more often than not I only need the shuffling effect once to refill my deck. Elixir is certainly a good card. But having a 1 mana 1 time effect to shuffle graveyard without any additional resources has worked wonders for me.
Dude Fangren Marauder is nuts! My pod is riddled with treasure strategies, and this thing is like $0.40. Amazing. Thank you as always, Demo!
If you haven't seen titania's song, check that out too. Hilarious way to make the treasure decks go sit in the corner and think about what they've done.
Extra Arms also is good in a green deck with Enrage creatures since you got ramp and have access to indestructible effects
It’s funny when I was brewing my Trelasarra deck one of the final cuts was Fangreen Marauder. Super sneaky card.
Faces of the past was one of my project cards for a long long time. Bought a playset of it a decade ago and was always trying to make it work in a deck for some real synergy. It never really made the cut over the years through where the effect was just not consistent enough to make it worth the slot.

When Hylda of the Icy Crown came out it finally had its moment. That is where it finally got to shine
Faces of the past would go wild in a deck with sacrifice and plenty of shapeshifters.
Exoskeletal Armor is one I've had my eye on. Whenever I reach for one of those enchantments that buff +7 or more, I then consider it instead.
I’m glad to know that Eye of Singularity wrecking my Kazuul deck lives on forever haha. Such a fun game and card you don’t see coming. I loved it.
man pre-modern MTG cards hit different
Exosqueletal armor is really good in my Old Rustein's commander
Familiar grounds and goblin war drums make your creatures inblockable as well
Yeah, together. My bad.
Old - Well, harder to block anyway.
Familiar Ground is an autoinclude in Lathril.
For fanatical devotion, you could use it with an exile board wipe incoming to sac all but 1 creature putting them in the grave instead of exile.
Legions to ash is one I put in my black/white deck for tokens, it's really useful, I use it to destroy food tokens and such all the time
Familiar ground and goblin war drums is a great way to make unblockable in gruul
Frontier Warmonger is war drums on a body. Goes in all my red decks.
I use Gruul War Chant with it
I run Fangren Maurauder in my Rocco Street Chef deck and my Jolene Plunder Queen deck. It has saved my bacon on many an occasion.
Fanatical devotion works against exile but in a different way. Instead of regenerating the creatures that you want to keep, you sacrifice them so they at least stay in the graveyard. Not as widely useful as regenerating a dying creature, but white does OK with recursion, and orzhov does great at it.
I learned of Fanatical Devotion while Building a Hofri Treason deck. Super good card
I run familiar ground with Goblin war drums. Old school combo from back in the day. Just makes everything unblockable in gruul.

I've never seen a Fangren Marauder be dropped without just gaining WAY too much life. Would definitely recommend.
Thanks. Excavation could be useful in my Flubs deck
Faith Healer is a key card in my Narci enchantress deck. Awesome value.
I’m glad to see this! I have a Narci deck that I’ve been editing recently, and this card does seem perfect in the deck.
How did i not already have exoskeletal armour in my Jarad golgari lich lord deck. Thank you sir for the new add
I play the exzoskelett armor in many Decks, one of my alltime Favorit card.
Faces of the past is going in my Azami deck, i can now tap all my wizard, block with one and untap the rest! Thats great
With how much the format has changed over the years, I thought an interesting video you might be interested in making is *what some colors can’t do or can do badly* while showing the few cards that can do something well off color
Nighthowler is the black version of exoscheletar armor, being in black make it a lot better
I'm actually working on an Ich-Tekik/Silas Renn deck currently and have Fangren in my shortlist... seeing it here may have put me over the edge haha
Here before the "10 cards im taking out of my decks" video with all of these.
With faces of the past you could sac a changeling to tap the board right?
Fangren Marauder is an old favorite of mine, its in my Kibo deck which gives out lots of artifacts and I’ve ended up gaining 50+ life with it
Faces of the Past might be sneaky good in my Helga Storm deck 😮
Fangren marauder has won me so many games on its own in my Ognis treasure deck. Even just sacrificing 3-5 treasures will make your life total so hard to touch.... But in that deck I can easily dump 10-12 or more with it on the board.
If someone has a Sac Outlet for Faces of the Past and a good "amount" of Persistent Petitioners, they could mill someone out especially if Bruvac is on the feild, you dont need the minimum amount (16) you can have less than 16 and sac another "Human" / "Advisor" and just repeat the Milling.
Yeah, I love Eye of Singularity. It's messed with pods every time it shows up.
I could see Faces of the Past being pretty good in Grimgrim, Corpse-Born decks
Spy kit with eye of singularity can be fun 😊
I have exoskeletal armor in my Mothman mill deck and it is pretty serious
Familiar Territory is autoinclude in Anikthea, Hand of Erebos.
No. They go the graveyard but then they are removed from the game.
Excavation is really scary with a Mindslaver out
Faith Healer is absolutely one of the best creature in my own Mazzy deck
Question about Eye of Singularity with treasures: can’t the player sacrifice each individual treasure for mana in response to the Eye of Singularity’s trigger? Or since it’s a mana ability, does it even use the stack at all? Great video as always! Just got an Excavation for my Slogurk deck 😈
yes. they can float the mana in response but they would have to use it right away.
Exoskeletal Armor in a Jarad deck is pretty good
faces of the past with Azami, Lady of scrolls is wild
Fangren maurader i have in a beast tribal deck with klothys as well as golgari ich tekik deck. Fanatical devotion im running in my archangel avacyn deck and kasmir lone wolf deck. Take a look at laccolith rig, glaring spotlight and martyrs cause, might be good for your next video ;)
I run eye of singularity in an azorius clones deck. It causes a lot of chaos.
Exoskeletal Armor in my Indominus to be brutal
I actually just discovered Faith Healer as a massive enchantments player. I really should get a few copies of it.
Good with Rancor + Enchantress too
I'm surprised you didn't mention Azami, Lady of Scrolls with Faces of the Past. If you have four Wizards total and chump block with just one of them, you can easily turn 4 draws in a turn cycle into 7.
Faces of the Past is in my Dimir control deck haha
Hmm... Who controls the damage targeting on Extra Arms? The enchanted creature's controller or the enchantment's controller?
the enchantment controller. very interesting way to use it.
@@edhdeckbuilding Okay, I want to get that for my Xantcha deck now.
With Eye of Singularity (6:23) in play and someone wheels with a Smothering Tithe: Will the controller of Smothering Tithe able to float the mana from treasures as they enter and get sacrificed?
yes you can float mana in response to the trigger.
i would put excavation into a slogurk deck. card draw, land sacrifice, and your commander leaving plays fetches lands back.
There's an old Tempest card called Ancient Runes that I think needs more love, maybe it is used but I don't hear people talking about it, it really screws over anyone who plays a lot of artifacts or artifact tokens.
Faith healer is really good in my Mazzy deck. (Also Auratog) I think there are ways to go infinite too.
Mazzy getting some love again.
I play that sack regen enchantment in atla pilani nest tender.
Awesome art
I'm not sure that token artifacts would trigger Fangren Marauder's ability, as they don't go into a graveyard.
Faces of the past is definitely one I'm looking to pick up though.
Tokens do go into the graveyard...
Actually played a good amount of these for once
Faith Healer should go into any deck w/ sagas.
Eye of Singularity's trigger ability would not work as well against treasure tokens as they can crack them in response.
21 treasures come in from a wheel, that triggers EoS 21 times, in response sacrifice them all and floar 21 mana.
At one point a had this Animar deck that was ape tribal (except for the commander obviously) and i ran faces of the past that way my board would untap if i lost an attacker or a creature to removal, using it for control against another tribal deck had not been to relevant during the deck's lifespan sadly😅
Ygra would love Fangren
Extra arms on Swans 😂
Faces of the Past is bonkers!
You can also use i to give a pseudo-vigilance to all your gang 🔥
Have you checked "Sickening Shoal (Betrayers of Kamigawa)"
My friend has a Vasi deck and the Fangreen Maurauder wins him the game every single time it comes down.
Maurder is insane its in my group hug deck and I easily gain a casual 100 life
I put Fangren Marauder in my Tawnos the Toymaker Deck. I get a second for free and half of my creatures are artifacts.
Fangren Marauder is a pet card :)
I play eyes of wisent in baba lysaga.
Fangren doesn’t worn on tokens, they don’t go to the grave
i've heard this comment so much i'll have to cover it in my next rules video. it does indeed work with tokens
I use fangren in Glissa
Faerie Artisans + Eye of Singularity = ?????
that's a super neat combo
I dont think the fangren marauder works with treasure tokes. Token's dont go to the graveyard.
I go out of my way to use as little tokens as possible . I hate how this game has turned into Gathering the Tokens
[edit] also, if you've got an Ygra, Eater of All deck and you're not running Fangren Marauder... why?
