When two guitarists own a guitar company, it's only natural for them to make guitars they themselves would like to play. Not that strange then that the Chapman feels good to them both.

Once again a great episode!! This continues to reinforce how the quality continues to increase allowing the average person the ability to own a really nice guitar. Definitely much better than 20+ years ago!! Well done Captain

    • @rockerseven
      @rockerseven ปีที่แล้ว

I will definitely agree with this statement. I own a Chinese made Epiphone, but it plays great. A decade or 2 ago I played an Epiphone, and it was garbage to me. I don't remember at all the model or anything, but it certainly predates when Epis were exclusively made in China. Meaning it could have been made in China, Korea, Japan, or even America. But no matter where it was made, it felt terrible to me compared to today.
I was really hesitant to get the Epiphone just based on my previous ideas, but now that's all changed.
I also have an Indonesian made Ibanez bass that I think is great.
Are either as good as my American made Fender Strat? No. But that Strat was also quite pricey. But for affordable guitars, while there are tiny bits here and there where the quality isn't as good (maybe the frets aren'tas smooth as they could be, or maybe the fret inlays are just plastic as opposed to a more expensive material), for the most part, country of origin really doesn't make a huge difference anymore.

From Leo: This proves my opinion for at least 10 years. Modern manufacturing, proven design and material selection has narrowed the gap between the affordable and the higher end instruments. A good set up brings them all to a very good level. The sound of the electronics is subjective, not really related to quality. Unlike 50 years ago, very few guitars are shipped with defective tuners. It is no longer bad vs. good, but good vs. better.

From what I can tell from the blindfold challenges, is that guitars and music as a whole is all based on what 1 person likes. Not what others say is the best. If a £99 guitar makes you happy and want to play, then it is better than a guitar worth £1000's that you have no passion for.

From Leo: You are completely correct Carl. I have guitars that cost above $2000 that are very nice and have no problems, yet most of the time I play guitars that cost under $400, in fact some I had purchased used for under $200 used. I even built a "partscaster" completely out of bits I had replaced on customers guitars that is in my top 5 players. Money spent is not equal to how well a guitar is liked.

Rob and Lee I love how you challenge and heckle each other your videos are amazing to say the least. I think that anymore the Asian guitar manufacturers are benefitting from advanced technology that makes it easier to be consistent in their work and maintain a higher quality end product. I think that what is the more deciding factor is the grade of woods being used and the grade of components that separates the budget guitars from the more medium to higher end instruments. It used to be if it wasn't American, German, or Japanese made it was pretty janky but Mexican, Korean, and Indonesian manufacturers have really proven to have the goods in the last decade. Mainland China can still be hit or miss but even they are stepping up swinging for the bleachers. Good showing fellas. Cheers!

Funny he mention the feel of a mid priced instrument for the PRS silver sky becuase I was guitar shopping for a start styled guitar last weekend. I had at the top of my list either a custom shop strat and the PRS silver sky (I was very excited about the silver sky) and the first thing both me and my friend said about it was that it felt and looked cheap and plasticky, even one of the guys in the store said the same thing and how excited he was to try and how disappointed he was when he did.
I will say it did sound very nice and played really nice. feels completely different to a strat and also has it's own sound without sounding like a fender too. But yeah the feel and look of it is very cheap.

Both Rob and the Captain immediately recognize the Chapman guitar and sing it's praise.................But non the less, it's entertaining.

I just want to point out to those watching, that east coast and chapman are both set up by the techs at andertons, which tells you if anything that they do a good job setting up a guitar, and ultimately a good setup is worth it’s weight.
Obviously I don’t know about the others but I’m under the assumption that the guitars that do the best in these videos are the ones most freshly setup, as that goes a long way for feel

I was trying to quietly listen to this video on my laptop while I did the dishes after my wife fell asleep and that Silver Sky cuts! I had to run and turn the volume way down when Lee started to dig in. I have a bit of new respect for that loud-ass guitar.

If you're doing this blindfold challenge for single cuts, please include Schecter Solo II Custom-a friend of mine did the same _experiment_ on me and four other people and all but one of us picked it over a $4k+ Gibson Custom Shop LP! I was so convinced that it was a far superior guitar that I ended up buying it despite not being fully enamored with its looks (the ABSN version) but it grew up on me over time and now I'm even contemplating to buy the GNAT version. If anything, the blindfold experiment has dispelled for me the idea that one has to get a Gibson if they want a good single cut.

Today by accident I stumbled upon one of those old German versions of Top of the Pops, where I found to my surprise Tom Petty playbacking, back in 1977. In that show also many old British acts, like Bay City Rollers and Slade. Dave Hill of Slade caught my attention, playing a guitar with seven tone- and volume knobs, with only two pickups. One of the Bay City Rollers played a White Knight bass. I couldn't find both of them on the web within ten minutes. So then I got this idea. Captain, can't you start a series 'One foot in the grave', in which you talk with these legendary seventy year olds about their gear, availablitiy in those days, their famous licks (Pilot - Magic) etc. (not the fame, the groupies etc). Preferably with peculiar guitars and the like. Say 20 minutes long, a bit tongue in cheek.

Ha, super fun overall. And, a great endorsement of the state of the industry. Are we in the Golden Age of electrics? How about a decade by decade type comparison challenge? What she said...?
