i used a 17mm craftsman deep well socket. fit perfectly in my 870 magazine. i just hammered it in there and then put on a ratchet on it and turned it as i pulled it out. worked great! and it was free!
I had the retaining pegs "professionally" pushed up too using a hammer and a 17mm long socket. Oil the socket and inside of tube, hammer the socket gradually in until it goes past the pegs, turn socket a few times with a ratchet, hammer at the pegs to flatten them out a little, pull out the socket. Done.
The crimp remover tool is intended for gunsmiths who can justify its cost through repeated use. I've got one and it works, more of less, but I still have to do a small amount of filing to completely eliminate the crimps. I've also used socket wrenches but found them more difficult due to their lack of taper, which is why I bought the specialty tool. Filing or dremeling will work. I've successfully done it without leaving a hole, but even if you do, it will be covered when the gun is reassembled. For the DIY guy I suggest the last method because you don't risk damaging the magazine tube. Removal and replacement of 870 tubes is a messy job and usually involves sending the receiver back to Remington.
@@garyfullerman6695It depends on how much value you place on your time. Anyone who makes one in a few minutes may be a real gunsmith, but he isn't a real machinist.
I just took a dremel to mine to get rid of the two indents and I don't have holes in my magazine tube. As if now I have about 1500 shells through it with no malfunctions
i have nordic +6 mag tube extension for my 870 26" and i just drilled em out and smoothed inside of tube where holes remain works 100%. if you do a full detail clean even just one a year you wont have issues. main issue is buying quality mag tube extension most are junk.
I just used my dremel and grinded it down nice and flat both of them and cleaned real good and tested til it was perfect for the 7+1 ext. mag tube and no more than a leisure one hour job on my day off !!!!
I used my drumel tool, 5 min. of work, and I was done. Older shotguns(1994 or older I think) no dimples. no work necessary, or drill it out with a 5/16" bit and you are done.
I just did mine , but i used sockets and a locking extension . Started wit a smaller socket then went larger with multiple sockets. To bad they don't rent them.
I did this using the socket but it caused the magazine to swell enough to not allow the barrel to slide on. And even though it was slightly swollen you couldn't tell it with your eyes. The micrometer told the truth. I ended up having to drill. The moment I drilled the magazine, the barrel slid on easily. I hope this helps.
This method was NOT recommended by the Remington armorer instructors at my course due to the brazing issue. But, they didn't say don't do it. If done correctly with a fully supported tube then it works fine. I don't think it's a good idea however for a novice to try it, especially with a socket. Drilling the detents isn't an issue, The holes are covered by the barrel lug with little chance of debris entering the tube. However, the cost of a police grade shotgun is not that much more.
I did exactly what this guy did with the crimp removal tool. Instead, i used a socket - I screwed up BIG TIME. This bulged the outer diameter of the magazine tube, now the barrel won't go back on. I don't know how to fix this, and I am very upset. I wish I would have read some of the comments prior to doing this. ANY suggestions as to how to fix this??? PLEASE HELP!!!
OK, I just took a file to the outside of the magazine tube - all is almost perfect. A wee bit of resistance when removing or reinstalling barrel at the bulge area, but nothing I can't deal with. I'm not going to do anymore filing. FOLKS - DON'T try this with or without this tool that is being promoted - You will get similar results that I did...
I have an older model of a Remington 870, the magazine spring retainer isn't the new fancy one and you can't press and turn to get it out. Also, it doesn't have the lugs on it that lock with the cap. Any idea on how to get this out?
my extension wont fit on the magazine tube. It's too small. Both are 20g. On the box of the extension it even has remington checkmarked. help? now my 870 is an older model, made in the 70s, so it was made with a 12g frame. could that be the problem? would i have to get a 12g sized tube? that doesn't make sense though, cause wouldnt the smaller 20g shells jostle around in there?
Just use a nice Walmart brand dremel is what I used and it came out PERFECT and the dremel was less than $35 and you have that tool for multiple uses around the house or shop !!! I did this chore on one of my days off on my Remington 870 Magnum Special Purpose 12 ga. shotgun and didn't have to do this to my Remington 1100 !!!
I drilled my dents out, i did not think of pushing the dents out like this, i actually had a magazine jam once because there was metal raised from the edge of the drill holes into the tube, i gotta fix that somehow, but i still wouldn't have paid 75$ plus freight and import tax for something like that rod. Also, there is almost no way there will come dirt into the magazine through these holes as they are under the barrel holding ring.
It is for the magazine spring retainer. These detents go through the grooves on the retainer. You don't need to have that retainer on there, but the serrated top helps keep the magazine tube cap from backing off when using the shotgun.
*thinking to myself*...price of the remover (a metal bar lol) + price of the mag extension + price of the mag clamp + the chance of ruining my nice/classic Remington = 2 EXTRA ROUNDS AND TACTICOOL LOOKS!?!? For nearly $150 extra cost? lol. yeah, ok. Just shoot your damn 870 and buy a side saddle if you want more rounds. lol
Seems to me you need to keep the barrel ON the magazine tube so you don't end up expanding the tube but not crushing the detents (as I've heard others report). Unfortunately, this sounds like a mag extension is a non-starter, as you need either (1) the barrel clamp, or (2) a COMPETENT gunsmith to install a spring-and-ball detent.
No one do this, it will cause problems with putting different forends on as well as getting ur barrel back on, and sometimes even spreads out the threads too much that the Extension you want to use won't fit or be WAY too tight to get flush. Just use a dremel and get rid of them that way. I know b/c i;ve done this both ways.
this is total bullshit . i ve drill two hole to remove these bumps and when you put the barrel back on , it the part that goes over the magazine cover these holes . and if your putting an extention you re probably the kind of person who will clean the magazine anyways

thanks for that
Thank you!
I really did not want to spend $35 on a tool just to use it one time.
I just tried that, and flared the mag pipe. Fuck me, anyone know how to un-flare it?
i dont have craftsman but a 16mm husky little extra from the dremmel did it.
please make a video on it bro
It's a good idea and I'm sure Brownells makes a good product to fix the problem. I have a an issue paying over $80 for a tool I'll only use once.

a "real gunsmith" would make that tool in a matter of minutes...

So after you do all this can you still go back to the standard magazine and end cap with the spring retainer without the dimples?

Dankeschön, sehr nützliches Video
Was just thinking that myself as every mag extension i have ever owned had a huge drainage hole in the end...
Great tutorial.
This tool is currently $83! Might as well pay a gunsmith to do it.

i believe the dent remover is $82.00, seems like something that would be used once.. Gunsmithing $10-50.
gun smiths wont even fart in the wind for $10-15... hahahahaha

How did you alter the barrel mounting ring so it fits over the tube???
did you figure it out? i got the same question.
@@anonymous_friend The barrel goes on FIRST then the Mag. Extension after.

Why does Remington put those stupid dimples on the mag tube to begin with? Anyone know?
It is for the magazine spring retainer. These detents go through the grooves on the retainer. You don't need to have that retainer on there, but the serrated top helps keep the magazine tube cap from backing off when using the shotgun.

Okay, Thank You!
Anyone know the snap caps he uses for the function test? They look sweet.

they are shells filled with small shot for proper weight for reliable testing
but no primer no powder

Another "brownells tool" gimmick $$$$$$$$$. That thing costs more than my Wilson combat extension.
Silver Mullett how long is the barrel on that ? And was the Wilson a 2 shot extension ? I don’t want it to hang over the barrel
@@mikestein1024 It won't hang over the barrel, under it sure.
Nice photoshop on the video cover... Terrible one at that 😂😂
Why not just use a pair of sturdy pliers that fit inside the barrel and push out towards the inside of the tube to flatten the crimp?
except that the magazine is brazed in, and doing something like this has a very high chance to break your magazine.
might need to upgrade to a 12gauge, there pretty cheap nowdays
Never, never, never do that on a 11-87. It's really really really hard. Your gun will be out of service for ever.
