I had no idea she endured this sexual/drug/alcohol abuse. Ms. Duke impressed me immensely when I first saw her in the Miracle Worker when I was just in the 4th grade. God bless her. Rest in peace Anna Marie.

bohogal1 ...She really, really was so brave Back then, you just didn't talk about such things. Now a days, I think we're understanding SO much more of what's going on with these young people/ children who are forced to work in the most vain, greedy, immoral industry of all time. I'm really pretty sure that she wrote about all that, maybe 10-15 yrs ago....well before anyone else...God Bless You and keep you , you are safe now.

Patty Duke is an amazing individual. A tiny woman who, as a little girl, was removed from her New York home, raised by theater-strangers who took advantage of her, stole her finances, and later molested her. Right there, many of us would be driven mad. Her diagnosis of being Bipolar later on could also have driven her off the ledge; but she remained. True to her faith in God, forgiving of those who abused her and actually "robbed" her. MORE of us need to be like Patty Duke! God bless her!

Forgiveness is a selfish thing, in a good way. I know. I was raped in my own home. It took several years but I forgave him in my heart. This freed me in my life to not carry him or that night with me. To me Forgiveness is Freedom. I surley hope this helps someone else. God Bless you.

What a star that has been extinguished! I admire her candidness and her ability to talk about the things that no one had the courage to do in her time! We knew her as Patty but to those who loved her she was Anna!

@msjosephine2 Each case is different. My molestation happened over 50 yrs ago. The molestor died over 30 yrs ago. He never....NEVER had any power over me, ever. I confronted him a couple of yrs before he died. I got in his face and told him he was a piece of shit scum and I was going to make sure everyone knew about him. It felt good. I did what I couldn't do as a little girl. I was free!

She's so right about forgiveness being the key to recovery/wellness. I didn't find out until I was in my late 50s. I had an abusive father and I was angry and mentally ill for years from this. When I finally learned how to forgive, the anger left, I was able to let go and I started to get well. Thanks Patty, I miss you as do others. RIP

This is why I love Patty Duke. She was able to forgive whereas I just can't right now. I can relate to the, "It's my fault", ideal and it's something I live with everyday. That being said, I look up to Patty Duke. Our lives have parallels, including sexual abuse and bipolar disorder, and I hope to one day be as strong as she is. c:

In every biography of her, it's said that she married Michael Tell and left him 13 days later, and everyone knows the story of her son's paternity, but I clearly remember (though I was a kid) a very bizarre interview she gave, I think it was on the Mike Douglas show, with this husband, and they were talking about how they were going to build an arc out in the desert and survive the end of the world, and start a new religion. He was a long haired, bearded guy and it was the hippie times and you'd hear a lot of people spouting these weird things, but not, typically, big stars. Anyone else remember this?

Agree-Although everyone must do what they need to do to get through-My feeling is trying to understand-which may be what is passes for forgiveness. At least when you hear Anna talk it is more of an understanding that she is talking about that she labels as forgiveness.Understanding what may drive someone to do something has the same benefits as what is known as forgiveness. But it's not quite the same.Nor should it be.Some things should never be forgiven-But it is cathartic to "understand"

Sorry to hear of your struggles. It is possible to achieve forgiveness if you remember it is a choice and not a feeling. Many times, the feelings catch up later. I went through this myself with sexual abuse. It is not an easy road, but a very necessary one... and well worth it on the other side: FREEDOM! Jesus can empower you to forgive and heal. Ask Him to help you and to send people to support you. This is not a battle won on your own. God bless you!

forgiveness heals...until you can forgive-you won't recognize what she is talking about. prayer helps. anna is not weird-her disease caused her to act unlike herself.
luckily she found help & has done so much to help others by her books & speaking about it. judging her isn't fair. have you looked at your own plank? to forgive doesn't condone behavior-it can save the world to forgive. Jesus forgave His murderers as an example to us. try to forgive-it could save you. Anna-you are beautiful& wise.

A stockbroker who befriended me years ago told of serious racial undercurrents in the area where Patty Duke now resides. And I do remember the military cautioning African American personnel against going into the region. And I do remember Couer d'Alene being in the near vicinity of Hayden Lake, home of a deep right wing organization. So I just wonder about Duke and just what are her politics. You'd think she would've settled in a more progressive political environment, say, Seattle.
