YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT DOES BIPOLAR MEAN SOMETIMES?
Duke was raised Queens where she experienced a difficult childhood. Her father was an alcoholic, and mother suffered from clinical depression and prone to violence. When Duke was 6, her mother forced her father to leave the family. When she was 8, her care was turned over to her managers John and Ethel Ross, who after promoting her brother, were looking for a girl to add to their stable of child actors. The Rosses methods of managing her career were often unscrupulous and exploitative. They consistently billed her as being 2 years younger than she actually was and padded her resume with false credits. They force her to drink alcohol and take prescription drugs, took unreasonably high fees from her earnings, and made sexual advances to her. She never saw her father or saw her mother only when she visited to do the Rosses' laundry. In addition, the Rosses made Duke change her name. "Anna Marie is dead," they said. "You're Patty now."

Patty Duke had only just found out she was pregnant before this award show...what we further didn't know/discuss beyond her health problems was the whole "Mama Mia" thing! A paternity test decades later cleared that up, so as far as this acceptance speech goes, give the girl some slack!!!

You can tell she is having some problems here. I loved her and read her book. I am so glad that I got to meet her. She spoke in South Bend at a Real Services program. She told us her story about living with a mental illness. She was happy with her life at the end. She found a good guy to marry and was living in the country. She said she was happy being a grandma. She told us that was her best role ever. She was happy finally. Taking acting roles when she wanted was freeing she informed us. She had medication for her bipolar and it made all the difference in her life. She was glad we still remembered her. Patty(Anna) let us hug her and take our picture with her. It was wonderful for me. I was devastated when I heard she had died young. So many people I care about keep dying. I loved your show and your movies over the years. She was so humble when I told her how good she was. She said she just followed the director's cues, but she was talented. I feel she was special. A lot of my friends felt so too. We loved you, Anna. I will never forget you. Thanks for the memories.

In her memoirs, she explained that, starting at 1:10 in this clip, she was actually signing the words she was saying--which makes the seemingly bizarre pauses more explicable. For some reason, the director decided to stay in close-up on her face, so no one in the TV audience could see what she was doing with her hands and everyone thought she was tripping heavily on drugs. In reality, she hadn't slept for days due to an attack of bipolar mania.

Patty Duke says something here that indicates she has more intelligence than a lot of people think she has. She shows respect for a very talented actress who is more than twice her age. She is Dame Edith Evans.
Dame Edith could have attended the Emmy Awards ceremony in 1970. She occasionally worked on projects for BBC television. Did Emmy Awards in the United States ever acknowledge performances in the United Kingdom? Public broadcasting in the United States often recycled United Kingdom television broadcasts, so the English actors might have been eligible for American awards.
Patty Duke utters Dame Edith Evans’ name in a rapid-fire way, as if she could be a manic depressive, but she is not hallucinating about Dame Edith’s presence at the ceremony.

    • @Harringtonml54
      @Harringtonml54 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dame Edith Evans was a nominee in the category she had just won. Anna was one of the first winners to honor a co-nominee in an acceptance speech. Lots of British actors at that time (Susan Hampshire, Glenda Jackson, Gordon Jackson, Keith Mitchell) were major Emmy winners.

Anna (Patty Duke) became a cherished, although not terribly close friend to my mother in Coeur d' Alene Idaho. I believe they met at the antique mall where my mother and father had a space. Mom and Anna would have some very long conversations in the mall. Oddly I saw them more as sisters than friends, especially in looks. Both were lifelong smokers with the health issues to show for it. By the time of her own death Anna looked nearly identical to my mother. My mother also had mental health issues but covered it and was able to cope somewhat through her religious devotion. Mom preceded Anna by 9 years, also dying at age 69, although my mother died of lung cancer. Anna was a very sweet lady to my mom and I will always appreciate her for that.

+moomson Yeah. It's not drugs. She was very open about this later on. She was in a manic phase of manic depression (bipolar disorder). Had barely slept in many many days. She's not in control which is actually a little hard to tell here because the most incoherent parts have been cut out. Mania makes you exhausted AND extremely hyper at the same time. Also gives you grandiose ideas, and lots of other things that make a person behave unlike themselves.

pgs. 215-16 from Duke’s memoir Call Me Anna: Not only was she having a manic episode during this speech, her former manager (whom she lived with and was abused by) had just died and she was pregnant by a married man. (She claims he was separated at the time of conception). It was the first awards ceremony her (disturbed) mother had attended and she did not express happiness that Duke had won.
Because she was manic, she had no idea that her speech was incoherent and bizarre. Her reference to the word ‘enthusiasm’: her manager told her it was derived from a Greek word for ‘the god within.’
When she looks like she is standing still, she is using sign language to send a message to the Deaf community.

yeah, that is the weirdest part of this whole clip - how she robotically approached the dais, completely ignoring Julie Sommars who is trying to hand her the award, walking around her in a military fashion with 90 degree turns, but then reaching for the award from her without ever acknowledging her existence or making eye contact - Desi looked concerned (but elegant!) when her name was announced, but she ignored him, too. They looked like 2 unsmiling people who had just had a fight. Bi-polar? maybe so, but something pharmaceutical involved here, too. No wonder Lucille Ball wanted to get her teenaged son away from her.

Perhaps our coziest togetherness moments were watching awards shows and ripping the stars to shreds from our living room ("Oh my God, she's gotten FAT!" "Worst toupee ever!" "She's drunk." "You know he wears a girdle, right?" "HIDEOUS dress!" "Gayest guy in Hollywood.") When Duke got up there we all started shrieking, "What's WRONG with her???" and my dad's going, "Drugs! She's on drugs!"

Here's a theory - this ceremony took place in June 1970. Sean Astin (Patty's son, who's paternity was not confirmed until he was an adult) was born in February 1971. Do the math - she may have just learned she was pregnant around this time. And by all accounts, she had multiple partners and she didn't even know who the father was. No wonder she seems distracted, when you think about it......

There's nothing humorous about it misunderstanding The Bible.
The pop-culture notion that judgement is bad all the time and that we're never supposed to judge anyone "because Jesus says so" that could not be farther from the truth; judging is in fact a Biblical concept, though you would be correct on Christians sometimes judging out of spite instead of love, though they generally judge all peoples to a Christian standard where this is unbliblcal. The verse you're specifically referencing is Matthew 7:1
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged."
However, you're forgetting the latter part of the same statement by Christ. I'd recommend reading it in full and not making the same mistake of so many "Christians" who fling that verse around, many of which who come across as only culturally Christian.
