If anyone new is watching this video I got a mad tip to increase the lifespan of the receiving cups! Some of them are super thin and can't withstand the force so they get damaged and bow out like the one in this video. I know it's an extra step but what I do is pull the bearing against a large flat plate adapter THEN I switch it out with a receiving cup. They may only move 3/16" or so but that first bit of movement when they are fully seated requires the most amount of force BY FAR! I do this and all of my receiving cups are mint condition after using the kit for years!
I bought my first. Otc bearing installer in 1988 so l 've been doing this a while. Saw the vidio and ordered a thrust bearing. It works great, makes it much less of a strain on your tools. By the way, my a.c. clutch installer and my ps pump pulley installer came with a thrust bearing. Wonder why otc didn't include one as well. Great vids I do not get as much rust in Tennessee as you do, but I do get some. I feel for you. Good work ain't cheep and cheep worth ain't good. Keep up the good.
I always liberally oiled the forcing screws each time. Used to do suspension bushes on a taxi fleet but have never used a hub tamer ( don't see them much). I very rarely used an impact gun and always used a thrust bearing off early model Holden (GM), oiled. as well . Forcing screws threads don't last long when used dry I found. Enjoy your channel Eric
Extreme pressure grease might work too in place of the thrust bearing should a bearing not be available. It wouldn't hurt to lube the threads of the jacking bolt. Thanks for the video.
Maybe its the old auto shop teacher coming out of me : "God Damit- wear your safety glasses" I wonder how many times I said that in 30 years? Your videos are awesome - keep doing them. Its like working in the shop with a good buddy.
Bill Johnson Lol you made me laugh because my shop teacher was always yelling that to me too. I took building trades in a vocational school and I got yelled at a lot there too. Go figure, now your yelling at me!
Well I got my bearing today I had to order it took 3 days for me to get it at a cost of $25.26 one guy said I got him a bear from Germany this man came from Mexico well just as long as it works thank you for all your help
I had a similar idea on a set of strut coil spring compressors I accidentally rented-to-own from the parts store. Ended up using the snout bearing from an eaton supercharger I had around EDIT: A quick look tells me it was an SKF 6203 or 6204, using it without the washer under the bolt head
Thanks for the tip. I have that set and have been using a bearing from a harmonic balancer installer set. Everytime I use it I hope the bearing doesn't grenade and I tell myself I need a new bearing. Thanks for sharing
Have you ever come across a wheel bearing that could not be pressed out using this tool? I borrowed this tool once, followed the steps exactly, and I could not remove the old bearing. I ended up bringing the whole knuckle to a machine shop to press the bearings. I'm trying to figure out if the tool didn't work because of corrosion (I live in NYC) or because my compressor wasn't strong enough. I have a pretty nice air compressor, so I was shocked (26 Gallons, Chicago Pneumatic which is an American Made brand, and an IR impact).
The OTC hub tamer is a lighter duty set up then The Hub Shark kit. The hub shark will take out any bearing no matter how rusty. It has never failed me. I also think the Hub Shark is less expensive then the OTC hub tamer. Hub Shark is made by Ken-Tool. Much more heavy duty.
great video used this one as some of my training to do the wheel bearings on my Toyota. what is your take on when I drive hit 30+ Mph car starts vibrating and is noisy I'd really appreciate it thanks
First time I have every seen one of those tools used. Any pressed in bearings I've ever done, I had to take the knuckle off the can and remove the seized and rusted in snap ring from the back and use a 20 ton press to push it out then back in, due to the rust. Do you always use that tool, or are there some press style bearings it doesn't work on, that you know of I mean.
We have the 6537 kit and I have had nothing but problems using that yoke piece to get hubs off..way more hassle than it should be, just wondering if all the various pcs in the elite kit match up with what comes in the 6575 Hub Grappler kit? Was thinking of just getting the grappler separately, since have all the various pcs for dealing with bearings in the elite kit..
Nice! I don't do a lot of hub bearings but it looks like this kit might work well to instill jeep d30-44 upper axle side control arm bushing. Have u ever used it for that?
check out the hub grappler update kit it's way better it comes with a new hub pulling bridge new forcing screw with a cone bearing and some new adapter for the rear if the Ford explorers and u use your hub tamer adapters
Looks like "Nice Thrust Bearing 607V Full Complement Of Balls, Case Hardened Carbon Steel, 0.7500" Bore x 1.6563" OD x 0.5450" Width" on amazon is the same thing
deepsquat600 Keep checking I pay less than $10 They gotta be out there... Oh I see them on amazon ...5.72 for the bearing but they hit ya 10 for shipping www.amazon.com/India-D5-Thrust-Ball-Bearing/dp/B00FAYCM84
South Main Auto Repair Apparently there are made in Germany INA D5 bearings and made in India INA D5 bearings. The German version goes for over $20 and the India version is much cheaper. For this application which will destroy either variety I'd go for the made in India version.
Ha. I have the same color 2008 Ford Edge and have been through a total of 6 wheel bearings (combined on all four wheels) Of course my Ford Edge has 276,000 miles on it. I concentrate on just Ford Edge maintenance videos and yours was great to see that little easy to do trick. I will try that next time. Check mine out when you have time the LCA was a bummer when the bolt broke. th-cam.com/video/PAQtZD43cAs/w-d-xo.html
South Main Auto Repair You should of because there are no repair videos on youtube for many repairs on the Ford Edge. If you check and do a search you will find most of them are made by me. I will be working on replacing the rack and pinon in the future as mine is now leaking.
I have another set wich its real good also ATD 8625 and very good price $120.cus that otc tamer is real expensive is like $500 something..!!u do alot of bearing there!!
And you're still not using hearing protection and that is going to cost you later on in life. It's no joke, hearing loss is horrible and brings nothing but frustration for everybody
These bearings sky rocketed in price. $20-$30 online now. Great tip.

Useful information. Of course out here in Arizona we simply nicely ask the bearing to come out and it drops into our hands.
SATAMAN Schmidt Oh Dennis I don't even wanna hear it lol
South Main Auto Repair I new that would get your goat.
I just wanna come there and get rich on flat rate haha I wouldn't even know what to do with myself lol

Astro makes the same type of bearing remover kit, the bearing you'll need for their kit is the INA D7. Available almost anywhere
Just a suggestion: Tapered Roller Bearings may have better lifespan. This type of bearings are designed to withstand also the axial force.
Good tip- as a certified parts changer that is one part I have not changed but if I ever run into one of those I will definitely bring it to you :) 👍
Steve Rob Wow sounds like a plan lol
Great Idea. Sometimes the tool manufacturer leaves out an important part during design.
Great Video!
Tool works great, fast and no need to remove the knuckle and press the bearing in.
Ozzstar Sure does!
I had a similar idea on a set of strut coil spring compressors I accidentally rented-to-own from the parts store. Ended up using the snout bearing from an eaton supercharger I had around

Michael Herbert There ya go problem solved...
That kit is money, money, money all day long...love it
Dr. O, the best tool for the Toyota Snap Ring, are (straight) flat jaw Pliers! Or, your Heater Hose Pliers (bent circle jaws).
Just bought a OTC Hub grappler of ebay for a great price, great idea $5 bearing to save a $550 tool. I say thanks again for sharing.
nswst8 No problem

Shade Tree Giants No I haven't yet and I use it a lot. Works every time... wellll so far :)
The bearing manufacturer is the German company "INA" I have always used them with my Hub Shark by Ken Tool
Hi from Honduras Eric, I just found a timken T8890A1 this one is tapered roller bearing maybe last longer!
Just the info I was looking for, thanks

***** Oh no kiddin never seen one of those, I will look into that. I have had my hub tamer for many years. Thanks for sharing.
great video used this one as some of my training to do the wheel bearings on my Toyota. what is your take on when I drive hit 30+ Mph car starts vibrating and is noisy I'd really appreciate it thanks
Try frame and spring shops too, those look about like king pin bearings
That is an awesome tool. Thanks .
Thanks for the tip Eric.
Sure makes lite work of it. So your saying that this reduces friction, and is kind of a sacrificial part?
Jeff Powers Yep that's right. It lasts a very long time, they cost less than $10 and make that back easy on the first job.

kenman1717 I use it on everything. Haven't seen one i wont work on yet..

Lisle has a tool VERY similar for R & R wheel studs.
What is it with you and safety glasses? Is it a love hate kinda thing? And right after you said you can turn the thrust bearing into shrapnel.
+James Schrumm livin on the edge...
Four Doorman sales reps and Scotty Kilmer watched this video! 😂😂😂
Nice! I don't do a lot of hub bearings but it looks like this kit might work well to instill jeep d30-44 upper axle side control arm bushing. Have u ever used it for that?
Awesome goodness pushin and a pullin man.👍
The bearing you used is it single direction.
Is that D5 thrust bearing 3/4 inch ID or OD?
thanks
BTW, Great "teacher" .. better yet "Bearing Professor" !
Wonder if that bearing would fit/work with my strut spring tool?
The price for the INA bearing is now $16 to $40, shipping not included.
Great video
Wouldn't it work better with a second bearing on the rear? Or is it not possible to add one on the back side?
great tool were do u get the bearing
I posted your video on the Ford Edge Forum. ;)
Well shoot makes me wish I did the whole vid now :)
Ford Edge owners are now starting to work on them as the warranties are now expired. Growing demand.
They don't put them in the kit because it would drive the price up. Retail they are about 34 bucks.
I wish I still had my hub tamer. I use to use a Japan bearing from a local machine shop.
Emt Scythe why did you get rid of it?
I didn't per say, get rid of it. Someone wanted it more than I did.
Ahhhh got it
Great channel.
drummerdem50 Thanks
if I may ask, how could these kill you? Are the bearings gonna come shooting out at ya or something?
Does this hub tamer work for removing the hub? I don't have a manual.
thanks...
Good tip, thanks
what is the reasoning behind using the thrust bearing? Thank You
So the tool doesn't bind up on the washers when turning.
check out the hub grappler update kit it's way better it comes with a new hub pulling bridge new forcing screw with a cone bearing and some new adapter for the rear if the Ford explorers and u use your hub tamer adapters

MAC T Shoot I should have recorded the back hub R&R they are a little tricky on a AWD

I only service a few of them in my shop. Have you done a rear bearing yet?
Only for FWD not all wheel drive. My Ford Edge has sort of a following as it is most likely the highest Mileage 2008 Ford Edge in the United States.
Oh got ya... the AWD is a real treat :)
Great job i hope your eyes are bullet proof ☹️🙄
Why you just don't run a weld bead on that lil bearing race and fortify it. And see how much use you get out of one.
I have another set wich its real good also ATD 8625 and very good price $120.cus that otc tamer is real expensive is like $500 something..!!u do alot of bearing there!!
Stenio Fernandez I do at least 1 bearing a day on average...
Stenio Fernandez atdtools.com/8625 for any one who wants a link
