This is a great tip! I used to use the smudge tool to blend the shading but it never looked the way I want it to. Thanks 👍
Smudge can work too, but so many ways for so many different looks!

Very good tutorial thank you 😊 I'm trying to do shading on a hand that is near a glowing light but I'm struggling with a) not drawing outside the hand and b)not drawing over the linework. I've done it over 3 layers 1. Linework 2. Hand colour 3. Nail colour. And then made a 4th layer for shading but I'm struggling 😅

Every time I try to add shadows each stroke I made are darker. How do I not let it do that? I want to be able to add shadows without having to do the whole area in one stroke.
Make your shadows on a separate layer and turn the opacity of the layer down. Keep the brush opacity at 100. Keep adjusting the opacity of the layer until it's the perfect shadow level 👍🏾

Cool. What's the difference between alpha lock???
Alpha lock lockers the current layer, so you can do shading but it will be on the actual skin layer. By selecting the skin layer and adding a new layer above, you can do the shading and edit the shading independently 👍🏾
What brush are you using
Mostly just sketchmaster I believe.. It's free in my favs brush pack!
Which brush do you use for your shadows ?
You can use any brush really, soft for soft shadows or a thicker brush! Can’t remember which one exactly I used in this tutorial, I should have mentioned it in the video! 👍🏾

Yes it is, this was an older iPad Pro (1st gen)
does the bottom of your hand touch the screen when you draw? sometimes my lines splatters and i think that might be the problem 🤔 but i need to put it on the screen to give control
if you’re using procreate there i’d an option you can turn on in settings where ONLY your apple pencil can make commands
Yep, I do touch the screen, but I have the settings so only gestures affect the screen, I can't draw with fingers/palm. I may make a video showing the options I use!

You can have your line art on its own layer at the top of your layers, and anything you do on new layers below will be under your line art! 👍🏾

This is great but I can't get the select layer tip you gave to work. If I tap my colors layer and hit select, then tap layers the selection disappears. Any tips?
Edit: I had color fill selected. Make sure it is not selected if you are dumb like me and run into this issue.

What’s the best brush to use if you want a more painterly shading style though? I’ve tried just using the regular painting brushes but none of them feel right.
You’ll probably have to figure out a way to emulate the look that you need. It would be nice if brushes has the ability to be kinetic in a sense.. and move the way oil or acrylic would, but the can’t see that happening just yet. I wish I could help you out! 🤷🏾♂️

I started with a first gen iPad Pro (2015 or so) it’s absolutely great for procreate! I think this was that iPad 👍🏾
Shouldn't the shading layer be below the line layer? Or was the line layer on Clipping Mask so that the lineart was still showing through?
Other than that, great tutorial. I guess this can also be applied to highlights as well?
I can’t quite remember, but I don’t use flipping mask, I select the color, then on a new layer do the shading, so it doesn’t affect the other layers 👍🏾
How did you get the brush you use for shading?

This is good teaching. Use to draw. I think i was decent. Dont have the imagination as much as you real artist. But this is a good tutorial. Im gonna be getting into digital art or drawing on Tablets and this helped. Thanks
