      Bro, you the best! Most video's on youtube are like hidden advertisements to sell their brushsets but you giving it out for free gets much love from me and shows that you are really here to help people learn how to draw and people like you are a rare breed on youtube these days. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to do all this and i have no doubt that many people will appreciate it.

      Is there an another way to contact u ... cause i have no instagram , ... but i rly need help to understand why u paint first the whole art in gray scaling but than not use it later an repaint everything with colors to overlay it at the end with ur shadow and lights ....so u literally discard ur grayscaling in the merge part at the end ... but way ?

    I appreciate you saying that shadows don’t have to be perfect, I get paralyzed in putting in shadows for fear that they will be “wrong” so I will be trying your advice :)

    • @G4MMABA3
      @G4MMABA3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shadows can be wrong if lighting is incorrectly placed; shadows can be incorrect as they are the opposite of the light source and are cast from the object.
      Angles absolutely matter with cast shadows and Form shadows (native object shadows that défine the object)
      Shadows that are for more organize and visually complex shapes (usually nature) do not need to be so accurate
      Shadow accuracy is dependent upon what you’re drawing
      I hope this helps!

    It’s great to follow this process , it’s making you work more efficiently, sometimes I don’t follow any logic steps , I sketch , I start to use color and after I put the shadow so I come back to fix the colour layer with the shadow , after that I come back to fix the sketch layer and so on , it’s really time consuming …. Thanks for sharing your process , nice art as well !

      If you want to convert an already coloured image into grayscale, you can add a layer at the top of all your layers and drop black onto the whole thing, then set its blend mode to colour. It helps show where the brightness-contrast is, but sometimes saturation is enough

    Hi habooks, your tutorials are easy to understand thank you for sharing to us, I've some questions concerning this video:
    1. Is lineart necessary?
    2. It is possible to paint shadow using one value?
    3. It is allowed to paint lighter shadow value on darker value object?

    • @HABOOKS
      @HABOOKS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Satria! Lineart is just a guide, it's not necessary but it's helpful. Although sometimes it's a part of the style. Regarding shadows, I would say you can definitely simplify but in real world shadows always have different values and level of darkness. Depending on your style you can consider it as one value or multiple values.

  • @mrs.quills7061
    @mrs.quills7061 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use procreate to sketch on the go and clip studio paint for lineart and coloring. I love using grayscale to help me define things and lighting early on because it’s a huge pain when you begin to color and need to change values due to incorrect lighting. When I started art in general my lighting would be off in some areas, so grayscale rendering helped me focus on that.
    What I love though that that before you even begin adding shadows is that you use different grays. I use 808080 gray as a flat and then render shadows and lighting on top of that. I never thought to do what you’re doing and I think will help everything render more fluidly! I also never thought to change the shadow layers using the color adjustment tools. I always turned the transparency lock on and colored directly on the layer, but what you’re doing is less destructive.
    I also see you toggle your line art/sketch on and off. Is this to help define the character design more? Something I struggle with is making my line art work with how I define the lighting. Often my shadows look painterly compared to a thick and rigid line art that I would compare to a comic book style. I really enjoyed this tutorial and will try to implement some of this (especially the values into my own illustrations).

    • @HABOOKS
      @HABOOKS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the detailed comment! Yes same here, I think grayscale rendering is time saving and it helps to develop ideas
      like lighting direction quickly, or getting to a conclusion about how we wanna go about forms,
      just like clay sculpting without being worried about hue and saturation. :)
      My goal was to simplify each step so that it's easy to repeat especially for beginners,
      so I separated local values from it's light and shadows.
      Regarding toggling on and off the line art, I would say it's habit to see if I'm following the boarders correctly,
      or sometimes I define fold direction with lines so I double check to see if I'm painting correctly! I'm glad you enjoyed this tutorial and thanks for watching! 🙂
