    Go to a local hospital, and ask them about the glass blades used for microtome dissection. Those are the super-sharp blades people often think about with finer than a scalpel. Using the the waterjet to sharpen either soda-lime or borosilicate glass would be an interesting investigation. (The former is everyday window glass, the latter is heat resistant extra tough - like name brand "Pyrex" used to be made with the stuff.) Neither should have the occlusions and irregularities of natural materials like petrified wood.

    If I'm not wrong, obsidian only makes an insane edge when its knapped not ground. harder, consistent materials would probably work better for a cut/ground edge.

      Attempting a 45° edge doesn't help either Edit: i retract this smart-ass comment. As a 45 woukd lro ably be the only way to get an edge. Any thinner and it does absolutly nothing but chip.

    • @cavelvlan25
      @cavelvlan25 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes hammers will break diamond just like every other rock type that doesn't have A LOT of metaloids. Not rly relevant to sharpening as it is abrasion not impact. The flaw was the sharpener. EDIT: I retract my statement and admit I had no idea hkw wrong I was. The brittleness of the stone makes it almost impossible to sharpen. Micro chips make big chips running water helps but only so much no matter what I tried the edge you would want is NOT obtainable with grinding. Wet paper stones diamonds no effect against the brittleness. the smallest movement pressure angle direction or the smallest particle of debri and your edge is gone. The sharpest I ever managed to make a piece of agatized wood was when it would chip. I apologize for my ignorance.

    You should do knifes with harder metals than steel and test them against a normal knife in sharpness, hardness and sharpness retention (tests like those in forged in fire)

    • @Bl4ckD0g
      @Bl4ckD0g ปีที่แล้ว

      Edge retention and durability generally come down to the heat treat, and since most steels have varying heat treats for their optimum hardness/durability, it'd be kindof a task to do all that. Especially since they don't necessarily research before jumping into it, I doubt it'd be anything really conclusive.

  • @lalli8152

    Reason why obsidian blades, and such is so sharp is because you should break off it in flakes, and use knapping. Trying to sharpen stone at best would result in edge what ever grit you have you use sharpening it with. Obsidian basicly is glass, and the flakes are incredibly sharp as you break them off

The brittleness of the stone makes it almost impossible to sharpen. Particles make Micro chips make big chips. running water helps but only so much. Wet sand paper,whet stones even guided,diamond stones no effect against the brittleness. the smallest movement pressure angle direction or the smallest particle of debri and your edge is gone.
