  • We had a 6 pound meteor lying around so we decided to heat it up to 2000 degrees and see what it did to ballistic gel and some other things. The latest installment of the waterjet machine shop tests series.

    Fun fact: in Valera, Venezuela, 1972, a cow was in fact killed by a meteorite falling from space. Thanks to my time as an educator at the Cincinnati Observatory, I have been able to handle a piece of that meteorite on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, that piece is sealed in a plastic case, so I am unable to determine whether or not it tastes like beef.

    The funniest part was that there was an ad for grass fed, Paleo, beef sticks that came on just after the video ended that said, "Beef without the usual downsides.", and I immediately thought, "Like chunks of meteorite seared into it?". Haha!

      Every channel has its heyday and wet and dry seasons. Even if it never blows up like it did again, I can appreciate that to this day it is just the same guys having way too much fun doing these things. The numbers don’t matter.

    I know you couldn't probably do it, but try waterjet cutting a super heated piece of steel. Would the water evaporate before it could cut???

      Even if it did, it’s not the water that does the cutting. The water is just the medium used to carry the garnet (sand)

    You should do the gel + hot thing experiment inside a big tub of nitrogen or other inert gas, so there would be less/no fire and you'd really get to see it melt.

    Meteroites can't be "headed towards earth" it only becomes a meteriote once it's landed on earth.

      Before they hit atmosphere they are called meteoroids.

    I guess it's fun to think that a meteorite would be even close to that temperature when it hit. Meteorites cool off completely before hitting the ground. So it'd be barely warm.

    Isn't the inside of that kiln made of fiberglass? You took the meteorite from the fiberglass surface and stuck it to the steak, then ate the steak.

    Unfortunately the premise of the video is wrong. If you watch "Meteorite Men" here on YT, they explain that meteorites are nearly cold when they hit the ground due to ultimately falling slowly through the thick lower atmosphere until impact. Looked like fun though.

      Yes and no.
      The inside would be local space temp. However, the outside would be searing hot after going through the atmosphere, but after little while it'll be cold as hell again.
      Thats why you should never pick up a meteorite with your bare hands. High chance of *Instant* severe frost-burn.
      Let it mellow for a while.
