the fact that arcane is fully canon now means that we WILL see Viktor in his robot state at the end of season 2 either fully robot or part since Riot confirmed the Piltover-Zaun story ends with S2. also Vander being Warwick now is canon. i just hope in the future projects they stop changing champs traits and personalities if it's out of character ( like Cammile in convergence)
Edit: Viktor will probably get a VGU with arcane season 2 so his robot design might change to fit with season 2
means we also might see Jayce kill a hospital full of people to spite Viktor, and the death of Caitlyn’s parents. let’s see just how lore accurate they intend for it to be
Wait but he is also a Mercenary that Soraka Cursed into a Werewolf which resulted in her unicorn person appearence.
@@deemo.z or they'll just retcon that text part of lore
@deemo.z at this point they might just go the warhammer route of 'everything is canon and not-canon at the same time'
Arcane Viktor, Warwick, Singed skins?
Imagine Dragons is now FULLY canon in the League universe and time traveling Cithria has broken through the wall
It's awesome to see a creator grow and be able to achieve new creative spaces. Your contents been great, I know I've really been enjoying it. Keep up the great work!
love u pinkward!
@@Necrit
U are so funny man😂
Always make me enjoy the lore universe
Keep it up champion
@@Necrit much love
we need lore update for shaco. Something very funny
One thing that scares me about this change is; I really don't want to see less popular characters like Nautilus, Skarner, Zac, Singed, Malphite, Urgot, being delegated to minor or secundary roles because their identities and lore don't fit the worldbuilding they're doing for the more popular ones. Every character should feel like the protagonist of their own history.
Yeah. That’s what I’m concerned about the removal of short stories. There’s a reason why short stories exist and it’s so they can give a certain champ a spotlight of their own. If they funnel the whole lore, it’s only the few popular ones who get the spotlight and it will be unfair for the rest.
Not everyone can be the protagonist
@@tobiasosuna5023 don't have to be, the protagonist will be ever changing and arcane did a great job at making you feel like everyone was protagonist in their own rights they gave enough depths to each characters ofc some characters had more but no one felt like they were sidelined
Im just afraid that all the "bad" guys like xerath, azir, viego, and elise will be portrayed as this guy is bad because he is bad
@@tobiasosuna5023 not everyone can be the protagonist at the same time. But the whole point of league of legends characters is, well, Everyone is a legend on their own.
The one thing I miss about no more short stories is that written narrations are just better in a lot of ways. They can give more detail in ways that other forms of storytelling can't, because it's hard to draw or animate Riven's backstory, but very easy to write it.
I still don't understand why they don't just put all that lore and short stories in the client. Just a small little button that says "lore," and takes you to the big list of stories. I would be people don't even realize it exists, half the time, and would be willing to read if they knew where to find it.
Or get more actually published. People who like books and are looking for something to read aren't going to randomly go look on the website of a game they might not even play. They could have published LOL anthologies or submitted their short stories to anthologies of the appropriate genre (that would requires to make sure the stories are worth reading on their own and not just as a lore dump, but there are some on their website that meet that threshold imo).
Many franchise expend their universe through novels and it works well. It's always a somewhat niche thing since reading is overall less popular than game, movies or anime, but it's still more popular than random shorts on a website. When Riot did it with Ruination it was well received and got read a lot more than their usual free short stories, but that it took them until 2022 to even try and that they only published one is something I never understood.
Exactly, I'd read that during queue times like come on riot
That's exactly what there used to be years ago but they got rid of it because so few people were interested.
Now there's way more champions, vastly bigger universe, and many more stories being told so I'd love to see it come back.
Necrit talking about League Lore for 30 minutes is the warm hug I needed today.
Agreed, I was waiting for ittt
It feels so nostalgic as many of us enjoyed sitting down and listening to Necrit’s story time.
When the mmo will be out, you're gonna explode mate xD
Waited months for lore. Sow this is awesome 😊
Here is another hug, Mug Thief. Your name references an in-joke from my childhood and I believe that your statement was a fair statement. You are more than deserving of the warm hug and I wish for you many more. Hopefully, we get a Lore video, and soon-regardless of the form the Lore takes.
Hey Necrit,
I don't know if you will see this, but I wanted to say how much my friends and I enjoy watching your lore content. We truly love it and get really excited when you update us on a new lore video. I don't understand why you might think that only people who've already read the short stories would watch your reactions, because at least in my case, that's not true.
You are not just a bot who reads pages you breathe life into your craft. You bring characters to life and often catch callbacks from other stories. Especially for someone like me who prefers hearing stories over reading, your content is invaluable. For instance, I listened to the entire audiobook of the Ruination novel, but if I had to read it, it might not have happened.
I understand that your channel can't solely focus on League of Legends short stories, which might not receive updates, but I believe you're underselling yourself by saying that nobody cares about YOU reading them.
Great comment and I’m on the same boat as you, I discovered the absolute legend of this lore through Necrit and have been following his videos ever since.
I guess we're just the minority in this case . I cant tell u how exited id get at work when a new story video came out . Ive made it a point to listen to the Voli Uder video at least once every few weeks . But im happy that Necrits channel is thriving with or with the Story videos. Its just sad to see them go . This channel is one of the last things keeping attached to lol , say what u what about their games the stories were always so immirsive when Necrit would read them .
Same very well said
Me and my friends are with this comment we liked the way of storytelling and we did care a-lot about them even the changes made are nice and fresh
I 100% agree with the original comment. I stopped reading the lore myself because Necrit made the lore feel alive. The art and production made the content enjoyable versus reading a story.
I got to know this channel thanks to League, and I'm still here cause of you. I watch every video you upload doesn't really matter the universe your exploring. The way you explain, the intricacies pointed out, and the minor little almost insignificant fact that I love hearing about new amazing worlds and their worldbuilding. And also, I don't read leagues storys, I kinda forget they exist until I see you upload a video about them, so if you could like, not, abandone that, It'd help with staying up to date :'3
My biggest worry with that announcement is that Arcane was able to blossom because of its relative creative freedom. Because it did not had to fit 100% of the existing lore and was allowed to make small and big changes, they were able to create a story tailored made for the medium of an animated TV show that was able to reach a larger public and be good on its own merit. If the coherence to the lore is enforced from now on, such bubble of creative freedom might not be able to exist anymore because this or that would not be logical with the rest of the universe, even tho said this and that might be better creative decision for their respective project. But this is still a Work In Progress, if Riot put the time and ressources to build a strong yet fluid enough foundation, they can maybe keep these creative opportunities flowing.
EDIT: I'm not worried about Arcane, arguably one of the most acclaimed stuff Riot ever produced, as I'm sure that the animation studio will be able to do what they want. My worries are targeted toward future projects, games, novels, series, and such that could be hindered by this decision. But nobody can see the future, so maybe they will avoid this hypothetical pitfall altogether!
Exactly. I fear that there is a good possibility that season 2 of Arcane could become worse because of this.
Chances are Riot will retcon as they go along with Arcane letting them take the wheel to a degree because of how they proved themselves in season 1. Granted there are set boundaries that can't be crossed, but this is not something that will probably be finished for another couple years. Setting up for future seasons of Arcane (moving away from Piltover into other regions after season 2) and getting Riot's juggernaut, the League MMO, are probably going to be the main priorities with Legends of Runeterra having to get reined in to a degree.
Another problem is that lore gonna be much more simplified or filled with "wtf" moments (or both, like Warcraft live-action), since all it's complexity can't be translated on screen.
There was never FULL creative freedom anyways. there were some things they had to keep . and even then they could just letthe arcane people cook whatever they want and adapt it to league. This iswhat they did now and i'm sure it is what they will do again.
you will have recognisable character with fleshed out and slightly altered stories.
I don't think that creative freedom was the reason Arcane did such a good job. Rather, they actually attempted to give characters reasonable motivations and let the story flow from there. Sometimes that meant that significant parts of origins differed from LoL but they can keep making such differences going forward.
LoL lore has always been secondary--just kind of tacked on to existing models/blurbs. It was also just kind of bad in that no one had more than one or two personality traits and we didn't really get to see how they developed. Even as Arcane begins to box itself in by building up non-changeable lore, it should still turn out better because the lore is higher quality to begin with.
Just wanted to thank you for all your videos. I really love the dedication and the honesty we can feel when we're watching your content. I've been watching you with my friends since you made us dreamt about the MMO not so long back then. It may not be that long, nor that much of a comment. But we hope that you'll keep doing well in the future.

As someone who didn't read the league lore I just wanted to take a second to say how grateful I am for everything Necrit has done for the past decade. I've watched so many lore videos just to understand what was happening in the universe and always enjoyed it!!
I’m excited yet very worried at the same time.....
I love cats, I love every kind of cat
Me every time I meet up with my mommy dom
Yeah I hope singed stays a war criminal. Who does ungodly experiments on people in his spare time. Everything else I'm at the edge of my seat for
Best way to describe it bth
If someone told me riot had this idea just yesterday, I would believe it
I feel people didn't interacted with the short stories... because Riot didnt give ANY marketing to it. Its almost like they WANTED them to fail. I am massive League Lore nerd, and I only knew when a story released because Necrit made a video out of it - then I went and read it. Necrit's channel is PROOF people liked it, and its specially sad since the cinematics they are replacing short stories with... just tell the same story as the champ bio. So its less lore and more makeup around the diminished lore we already have.
Dont get me wrong, I trust the writting team... i don't trust Riot's upper management. I don't trust them to care enough about lore to tell stories about important champions of certain regions because they are not popular and can't sell skins. I don't trust them to maintain a steady flow of lore on LoR because the game ALREADY doesn't give a big profit, so no reason for them to continue boosting it with more content. If I wake up one day and find out that they cancelled LoR because it wasn't meeting their expectations, leaving League's lore barebones from that point on, i won't be surprised. Lore is seen as dispensable, changing everything to be canon won't change that.
Riot and spending ressources on something and then leaving it in the dirt. Name a more iconic duo...
yeah, if they put it into the cleint and feature new ones on the front page on release, people would read it while in queue.
Personally I have read like 3-4 short stories over the years, but I didnt know about them till like late 2022. Majority of player dont know this content even exist, lol
We'll see, but you're right about the upper management. It only means now if the passionate devs will be able to push the actual important stuff through no matter the money (aka the biggest possible profit, but funny things is, the mmo will earn tons of money if done right anyway, just not as much as the people who need all the money of the world would like). Maybe some devs will have to rebel in riot (lol) to make the world and the champions their justice even if it means lower sales.
In riot forge games and LoL the corporate shit can go through, sure. But, I'm sorry, a lot of people around the globe are already insanely attached to the champions and to the world at this point. Arcane and new ways of exploring the lore will solidify the point even further, so the case will be even more important as the time goes on to the release of the MMO. So if they don't do the MMO right in regards of the world building it will hurt their reputation bad. Like, real bad-bad. Sentinels of light had to be the first and the last biggest important lesson for them to see how to not handle things. LoL is a great tool for them too learn on mistakes without too much harm to the IP while they can. Though the time is tickin down pretty fast, less room for wrong decisions. More and more people (again, with time it will get even more serious) start to care about the universe and don't see LoL just as entertainment or a game.
If passion wins - mmo will blow up like wow in 2004. Maybe bigger. Hm, actually, probably even much bigger.
If passion doesn't win - the game will be insanely popular and a success for sure anyway, but would be treated as a theme park or like Fortnite and nothing more really. And a lot of people would feel betrayed too.
Personally, I would rather choose between a passionate project or shuttin down the game completely. No third corporate bullshit choice.
Yeah I've played league since S1 (although I haven't been playing much the past couple of years) and I'm learning about these short stories only now. Like when I saw riot's post I thought by "short stories" they meant the champion bios, which weren't super deep. I just never knew these short stories existed, I've never seen them in the client at least

Twisted Fate being the only person who ever smash and dashed Evelynn without getting killed will always remain canon in my heart.
ngl, when i found you, i was essentially looking for someone to read the stories to me. but then as i learned more about the universe, read some stories myself and such, i started coming here to see what you thought about it, or mostly because you could tie together things i couldn't. you remember details of old stories in a way that i can't and i come here to listen to your perspective. im glad you're in a better place mentally now! let's hope riot gives us some good lore soon ♡
Just been sitting here, WAITING for necrit to drop his reaction!
Would that make you a good demoman?
Damn I really hope that Ekko's lore doesn't change. Arjuna's death, him solo creating the z-drive, and other stuff made the champ for me. I also really hope his parents are still alive.
Yep, Heimerdinger potentially helping Ekko create the Z drive is one of my biggest fears for Arcane season 2 since it would take away from his achievement as prodigy inventor imo. When it comes to Ekko parents though its still not confirmed if he is or isn't an orphans in Arcane, people assume that Benzo was Ekko's adopted father but he could have easily been Ekko's boss who also looked after him when his parents were working at the factory. I could also see Arjuna being a part of the Firelights to if they try to bring that part of Ekko lore into Arcane. Its still gonna mostly have massive retcons of LoL Ekko lore and history since Arcane Ekko is pretty different when it comes to his personality and outlook.
@@smuggrog9821 My guess is that Heimer is going to be opposed to the Z-drive as a concept. Maybe not as opposed as he was to hextech, but definitely not thrilled if Ekko ever reveals his plans to build it. Thus, Heimer will be helping him learn how to use hextech, and generally nurturing his intellect, but Ekko will feel compelled to keep his Z-drive invention a secret.
Making Arcane Heimerdinger canon is a glow up
I'm so sorry to hear about the struggles you went through with your content. I just want you to know, and I'm sure a lot of your audience will agree with me, I watch your videos for YOU. I love how much thought you put into whatever you talk about in your videos, it shows the care and respect you have for that chosen topic. I’m actually new to League and found your channel when I was looking for a lore guide in chronological order. I know your content has changed a lot since short stories aren’t being produced anymore. However, you definitely helped me tackle League lore in a way that wasn’t overwhelming. Thanks so much for all of your hard work until now ❤
I feel like arcane did a good job at establishing the premise behind both singed and Victor before they change a lot. It seems to me that their characters in arcane will develop into something closer to what we see in league.
I hope Riot explore Leblanc's lore... Kinda interesting how that one of the best manipulator character work in Runeterra... How she managed her clone and manipulate thing around her...
Yes! They can EASILY make some characters LeBlanc's clones all along too :)
it would probably be better to leave her a mystery rather than risk overexplaining things and ruining the whole character
@@Kurollxx13 Honestly I'm not sure if riot is capable of creating a world with complex geopolitics that a character like leblanc deserves. I still think I'd like to see them try.
Love the Idea of you covering the new Lore in a more fun way. It was nice having you read and go over the stories, but depending on how they are presented in the future it's not even assured there will be a need for that.
How about you cosplay the Stories or make a Puppet theater presenting it ^^
Hey Necrit, just wanted to make sure you know that it’s more than just you reading league short stories that brings me back. @26:00 *You were the Loreman.* It was like consuming Warhammer40k lore but not reading *ALL* the books (no one has)
BUT I am intrigued what kind of fun you can make with lore
Sad to hear that the short stories are officially gone. I understand why, but they were something I personally enjoyed even long after I stopped playing the game.
Honestly idk if this is such a good idea, the runeterra lore is vast and unifying all of it will be an absolutely massive undertaking and idk how they are gonna do it since Its gonna have to have a massive amount of collaboration to unify LoL, LoR, Arcane, other cinematics, MMO and fighting game, espically if they are gonna try justifying why they are fighting. Just look at LoL original lore to see how that went. Let alone also coming up with interesing but still cannon riot forge games being devoped by other studios. I just don't see it happening very cleanly but id love to be proven wrong.
Honestly the scale of runeterra is why I'm concerned about this change. I absolutely loved reading/watching the short stories that they posted and although they were niche, EVERYONE had access to them. Those stories could also dive into different parts of runeterra and it's stories pretty easily. An animated TV show or a game takes a long time to produce and make, while a written short story takes much less time and could still be pretty impactful. The newer stories might still be good but I'm scared that we'll only get like 1-2 stories per year.
This might be a bad take. Marvel and DC are good examples of amalgamation style stories that started from pieces that eventually all came together. With retcons and rewrites happening long before I was born(96) and plenty of strong comics/movies have come from that cannon including adaptations, loyal to source or not. Riot has already laid the bricks for all their IP's to come together, it'll never be perfect. But from the goosebumps I got watching Arcane, I can tell you I'm damn sure excited. Definitely not scared.
as I have been saying for ages now, arcane was intended ALWAYS to be canon, sadly ppl are too retarted as always. There was 0 chance arcane would be a "spin off" universe or alternate universe, literally 0 chance
@@sazariif they follow the marvel studio path, then it well be pretty bad
@@sazari But the DC and Marvel movies AREN’T CANON to the comics. They’re adaptations, or they’re loosely based on the source material.
Canonising Arcane, to me, feels like them deciding spontaneously that MCU is now comics canon - everything must now be retconned to fit the MCU. And the MCU must somehow remain consistent with literally every comic they put out. It would lead to worse quality for both.
Not to mention the comics continuity is so convoluted that only hardcore fans even slightly understand what the hell is happening.
So... with Arcane being officially canon now I have to ask... what’s going to happen to PnZ’s geography? Is Piltover no longer going to be built directly on top of Zaun and there’s going to be a bridge separating the two cities? I honestly prefer the original layout of the two cities a lot more, especially the structures like the rising howl. What’s the verdict on that?
I agree, arcane being a AU worked so much better for the show and the core universes freedom
As someone who got into League after Arcane, how did the layout work? Was Zaun a Subterranean city with piltover on top of it?
There was an accident involving explosives. It caused a massive chunk of the city to collapse below the sea level. What remained up above eventually became piltover, while the parts that fell down turned into modern Zaun.
@@y_matter3368 probably that explosion happens in season 2 of arcane. would also be a 'nice' way of getting rid of the firelights colony, so ekko can be the loner he is in the league lore
Where the hell did he get that from? They only said the origin of Hextech from Arcane is canon, they never mentioned Arcane is canon in its entirety.
As someone just branching out from being a partnered twitch league live streamer, into a youtuber, I really appreciate the personal journey u just shared.
I can relate, getting my footing modding skyrim live in college, switching to league for dual streaming when Dignitas signed me, then another shift when split streaming became a nono on twitch.
I feel ya man.
Lookin forward to the next vid from you like always.
So happy to see Necrit has found himself once again and is in a comfortable, happy spot with his youtube career. I've always loved the lore videos on this channel and like Necrit will always be a fan of the Lore itself ( Still love how he got called out in the Pentakill vitural concert too! ) But it's always great to see when a forced change that can be pretty rough on someone, ends up as a happy story. Really happy to see it and look forward to more from this channel as always!
I always thought the secret for the constructs was the Galio is sentient and can talk, unlike the other constructs. That's the secret the creator died with
It was but it got retconned apparently
Hey Necrit I've been watching you're videos for some years now and I always loved your theories and guesswork in relation to the lore.
You helped drive my curiosity on the lore and how all the characters interacted with one another.
You never felt like a lore archive, but more so a researcher delving into a field of study and explaining the nuance of the world which I wished to learn about.
I'm appreciative of all your content and I hope you continue to be comfortable being yourself going onwards. League lore is amazing, but so are you.
Beautiful comment
They really should have kept the lore separate, like Arcane and Runeterra being their own continuity.
As a fan, I’m fully supportive and happy to hear that you’re doing the things that you love and not being constrained to any particular thing you are known for. Thank you for providing us with your passion to all the enjoyable topics you cover on your channel!
Legends of Runeterra has done such a great job at character and world-building. When they took that break from adding to the world through LoR, I was afraid they would step away from LoR's take on league's lore. I am so glad they are leaning into the world creation done by the great creative minds of LoR. I hope they update League default skins based on the changes done by LoR.

@@susanthejew6351buddy, its still going strong at this point lmfao
Nah.. I think the exact opposite is happening. LoR writers were able to write some outlandish trash because the higher-ups didn't really care about canon. Now that LoL has an official canon, they will be scrutinized and reined in hard (no more self insert OCs).
This definetly seems like a play to just make the lore easier to use in future media projects which makes sense
wow the ending part actually got me a little emotional, hearing how times got hard when lore stopped coming out.
We are entering a new phase, both in terms of the unified canon and a fresh new direction from Necrit. I am so excited for what the future of Runeterra holds!
my biggest fear with making arcane canon is how they'll handle Camile and Ekko, who are both excellent in LoL lore but cannot be the same if the arcane story is to be canon
I'm more worried about Camille being like in Convergence
nice reference on the "sotry", u have a great taste or maybe that is just a typo
I agree Camille's literal job is to assassinate people like Silco to prevent them from doing deals with the upper class
It's in my head canon that League's Lore is the same as Fate Stay Night's. Champions are just heroic summons and the lore that summoners read are epics/stories passed down through generations. Meaning there could be inaccuracies :)
Having a unified canon is probably the hardest thing any multi-media IP could possibly attempt. Magic has been struggling with inconsistencies and retcons for decades at this point
If we won't get short stories can we get longer ones pls 😭😭 I loved First Shield and Ruination, probably my favourite content that have EVER come out of League
Your channel actually got me looking into the lore. Seeing the short stories on this video was the first time I've really seen these. A whole new page of content to unravel! Thanks, Necrit!!
The lore master named Laura...
How convenient
Noticed how your content transitioned from a lore commentary/retelling for champions to a more bellular ( youtuber of wow ) style of videos of just talking about the game's general things and news and tbh i think i love it
A thing you can do with lore vids: instead of being a reading bot, you can do a "breakdown".
Talk about little Easter eggs, hints, throw some theory about the character, do a characterization, etc.
One amazing thing about your old lore vids: the way you portrayed the characters even if we had no idea how they look. Maybe you can explore that in a way.
BIG W
This actually makes me excited for whatever events, cinematics or games they'll be planning in the future. Now it's actually hype since we'll actually get to know a cool snippet of what our champions are actually doing. Now I'm invested, unlike before.
They need to fuckin rework The Ruination Lore via Arcane in future seasons
As much as i loved watching and hearing you read the lore i never stopped watching your videos i always watch them if they were league or not if i see a notification i know that a great video is here so do what ever makes you happy and im glad to see you succeed with what ever you do good luck will always support take care ❤️
If LoR is mostly canon there’s a high chance time traveling Cithria is real
Hopefully he mentioned her at HQ since it was a pretty big deal.
Also kind of retcons galio though. It's stated in his lore "his secrets died with his creator" but now he just has more now
Wait...everything is canon? Is my Fiddlesticks/Tahm Kench best friends forever fanfiction about to finally take off?
One of them is 'The Adventures of Tahm Kench and Fiddleberrysticks', they sail down a river in Runeterra with Lucian.
I personally don't like they made Arcane cannon. They should have been kept separate because it allows for LoL players who know the lore to stay engaged as it was diffrent than what we expected. Another thing by keeping thing seperate it would have allowed them to maybe kill of champions which they can't do in main lore without breaking cannon. Now i know every champion that shows up is safe because riot will not want to anger any fanbase.
YEEEEEES! FINALLY! Great to hear they'll integrate arcane's fantastic lore into the canon universe! That's been the biggest gripe I've had about league's fantastic lore. Although now this means Galio's power ranger pretricite monster squad is canon.. at what cost did this come?
It makes more sense for Durand to have apprentices than for him to have made Galio by himself. Therefore, it only makes sense for them to continue to practice the techniques they learned from Durand over the generations. None could accomplish an intelligent talking golem like Galio, but lesser moving petrified statues DOES make sense.
Dont have to be... everything added later will be canon and those things that exist today can be reworked, retconned and archived just like half of LoL champions. They would fit perfectly into an MMO so they will probably remain anyway.
@@Silent_Eric It doesn't tho. I mean, Kara in Mageseeker is literally Durand's descendant, and she says she left the family because she thought everyone there where monsters, greedy people.
Then you look at them in LoR and they're literally saints
The sad thing is... they'll have to completely scrap out brilliant characters like Camille and League Ekko, because they cannot exist in the same universe where Arcane is canon. Camille essentially is retconned out of the story with this, only her family name remains. And idc what Meddler says, League Ekko and Arcane Ekko are two COMPLETELY different characters, with completely different timelines - you can't just say ''hey they're both canon now'' and change a few words in some short stories to make it make sense.
@@felipecouto1102 Making Arcane canon feels so short sighted in my opinion. It’s good precisely BECAUSE it wasn’t shackled to a massive sprawling universe. Arcane could do whatever it wanted - cut out any extraneous characters that didn’t fit the story (like Camille or Urgot or Mundo), change the characters to have closer, more complex relationships for the sake of more intimate drama, remove worldbuilding elements like the brackern crystals because they would have distracted from the core story.
The world of Arcane is intentionally SMALLER - focusing entirely on a small cast with intimate complex relationships, cutting out anything that isn’t directly relevant. Trying to cram it backwards into the canon is a BAD IDEA. Forcing the Arcane team to figure out a way to make someone like fucking Mundo fit into their universe is a BAD IDEA.
Saddling them with an entire universe and telling them “Hey, everything you do with your story will determine how this entire universe is run” is a BAD IDEA.
Bigger more engaging ways to tell stories are cool, I'm just afraid that only most popular champs will deserve to have a story. Remember Yorick?..
When I first saw universe's site, I thought what a nice (cheap and easy) way to give everybody a place in events and not just "long-long time ago..". It's really strange what they're abandoning this. Logical from "no one reads them" point of view but strange from "how champions will be more than just tldr bio?"
p.s. thx to color stories every champion felt like THE main character! Imo this was the most important thing about them
Just let all sources feed off of each other, and in the end it should breed creativity and interest, and it is likely that the best version of everything will be most remembered and popularized as long as it was spread wide. It's called refining.
The huge risk now is that the cannon control might stifle great ideas which would not align with currently accepted cannon (like some of those that were in Arcane S01). That would be a great shame.
Let the non cannon stories be stories and legends, and let there be a lot of stories in this world.
Also, since for practical reason every champion need support cards in LoR, but for story reasons some champions must be isolated, LoR cards should not all be considered to exist at the same time imo, but represent beings from all time across the world of Runeterra (Cytria with all her depictions presents this concept well, so it should easily be accepted). Thus all the prehistoric yordles in LoR for example (like Nakutak etc) should be long dead lore-wise etc.
Regardless, since Arcane did not explore the origin of the crystals / power sources, it does not invalidate any lore on the origin of hextech, only on the refining of magic crystals, as source of hextech. I don't see any conflict here.
Jace gem (the one given by the mage who used it to power his spell) was spent, useless.
A lore nerd here. My main attraction for the channel was and is always is the deep cuts, theories and finding where the lore is hiding , within voice lines ect
This video, felt so heart filled... but no signature necrit "dun-dun" joke at the end, I'd argue this is one of the best videos you've made, thank you for years of being a awesome content creator
They should just have a "non canon" seal for stuff they wanna change. Still, i did call they were going to make arcane canon
Tbh I think it would've been cool for Arcane to be in its own cinematic universe separate from the lore. They could've said that they're just alternate universes and both are equally canon.
Yes, it would have been so much easier. I played Convergence and it pointed it out but, I’m starting
to think everything is canon in different universes and timelines.
a lore video.... it's been 84 years...
I've never understood why "Viktor/Jayce invented hextech" was considered an inconsistency. Even in the inner workings of Arcane itself, there's an easy workaround - Viktor and Jayce weren't the first ones to invent it, they were simply the first ones to _make it public._ After all, they went from "I guess Jayce is getting exiled" to "massive unmissable magical event occurring in the middle of Heimer's lab" literally overnight.
If there was someone who was hypothetically dedicated to secretly keeping the peace in Piltover, someone who relied on a massive technological advantage, then they'd probably spend a good chunk of their time making sure nobody else got to their level.
Jayce and Viktor weren't the ones to invent hextech. They were just the ones who announced it quickly enough that Camille couldn't silence them.
I thought they would introduce it as, Victor tinkers with the crystal but house Ferros has a monopoly on the supply one way or another
Necrit is so real for that last part man. I could see your energy drop when league lore stopped popping, but I’m beyond happy that you found a way to transition. Love ❤
I honestly think people are overthinking this a bit. Except for P&Z. Every champ is gonna need a new base their. I also don’t think Arcane has to show us the Viktor and singed we have in league. It can just give us a snippet of their lives and show them heading that direction. I think Singed in Arcane fits perfectly fine with the one we already have.
As someone that played league for 12 years, Arcane was the main thing that got me into the lore. I'm not that much of an arcane fanboy, but it did get me excited for the champions that I actually care about and to finally know their lore.
Appreciate these videos a lot and really happy they're taking this route.
Necrit you're an abosulte legend and you litterally sparked a passion for league's lore in me, i'm now playing LOTR exclusively for the lore, and i have read ruination, all thanks to you, and i am truly thankful for all of that. I'm also so glad you found the way you wanted to make content, i hope you'll enjoy doing this for a long time in the future, we'll be there
just wanted to say i love your videos! i listen to them at work since i don't have time to read the lore, short stories, watch the official films, etc. getting your summaries and regurgitations is really enjoyable :) no matter where you go with the channel, i'll be looking forward to your videos!
This is so important for the first company to make Canon content across almost every single medium available. My investment is so damn high.
I spent an untold amount of hours reading these shorts stories. Even if i hated the game, i still went back into it because of it's amazing world. The stories carried this world (Runeterra) for years, and without them a lot of us would not have interacted with the game nearly as much. Even with that, i do agree fully, it's time to move on. Now that the foundations have been built, there's now so many different ways to tell the story of all the different champions and characters. I look forward to having another cinematic to watch, and to having the ruination partially retconned.
P.S. Considering the amount of lore coming from cards in LOR, i don't think you'll be out of a job soon
The part that saddens me is that lore is now effectively paid content....
reading every new short story always connected me more to the game, and them missing has been very noticeable
Thats the thing do... do they REALLY have other ways of storytelling? The cinematics they've been promoting don't actually show any lore, its just a dimished version of the champion Bio. The games before Song of Nunu apparently aren't canon, and even then, updating your lore at the pace of game releases is not exactly a good idea
@@felipecouto1102 yep, i share your sentiment exactly
the lore got updated with releases usually as much as is needed to put the new champ in the story, and then a flavorful color, which was always more for personality than story advancement
other than that they released short stories as snippets and events happening to chars as they wanted, sometimes tied to current releases, sometimes not, it was a nice little window into the universe, and wed have a new one every so often
now windows into the universe are literally only big game releases (that will never be consistent, games shouldnt be released on a schedule and many will probably have to pivot or even be dropped), which means ppl have to buy the games, or in the case of lor get the story in disassociated snippets (prolly same for project L too)
and the biggest one that will fix this new problem is...an mmo, the literal meme of gaming because the genre is so unstable and demanding, that there is no guarantee it will do well, and usually will be a drain on resources with the amount of content it demands
i am incredibly sad about the state of league lore now
@@felipecouto1102 true. If anything, it should be like an improved version of Ruination: a season that focuses on a region's or faction's story.
Feels bad for riots writers, I loved listening to you cover the stories also, I think taking the color stories out is a bad move personally. If anything they should be writing bigger books like the Garen one. I’ll always be a huge fan of your content though! Maybe do some lore coverage on genshin cause there is a lot going on there!
This seems like a good move forward to line everything up for the MMO. Lining things up for strong quest lines and having everything make sense. Hopefully there will be a good driving story in the MMO.
As someone who has followed the lore since the start and been subscribed to you in the early days of your career on YT, I agree with your points and would love to see more of those bite sized videos pertaining to champions, relationships, factions, etc. Do what feels best for you and the best people in your life will watch you do it. Keep it up man!
13:47 fast forward 3months and well RIP the Lore I guess
I'm pretty sad about the short stories being removed, but I guess it's a consequence of our society
The consequences of illiterate children and people too lazy to read. Ruining it for those of us that actually enjoy written stories.
So, does that mean that they are now going to progressively retcon everything into the main canon?
I have a feeling it will be a mixture of intergration of elements and details along with retconing a few things to better fit. Some things are easily handled while others reqiuire some finessing or reshaping to help fit them in.
This actually blew my mind. On one side it's good because arcane did the official universe some favours but also, what happens to the champs who didn't appear in arcane? i got kinda stressed
Ikr, your telling Camille, who's literal job is keeping the social hierarchy and keeping house Ferros monopoly isn't stopping Silco?
@@ethanstyant9704 Yep
The thing that impresses me the most is that now, 14 years after the game's released, they're adding the ability to switch languages. Thing is, it always worked, with just a change in a cfg file. I've been using this for like 10 years now both the current client, with and without the Riot Client, and the old Adobe Air client. It should be super easy for them to just make that cfg change but for some reason they managed to "take a bit longer than we previously thought".
They should list the most glaring disparities and lore impacting moments and make a choice pretty early if they want to build on sane bases.
Man, it's so unfortunate about Ekko. His old story seems as good, if not better, than his Arcane version.
siding with current ekko being better lore-wise than arcane's, mostly because him actually making seconds matter with his Z-drive like the birthday story.
His story is far superior to Arcanes. In Arcane hes just a gritty guerilla resistance leader. Yeah, sure, this one fight scene vs Jinx was sick. But that alone doesnt make for a better story.
Most characters were better pre-re-retcon than after.
All they had to do was tell their stories with more words and go from there, instead they have to rewrite everything from scratch (that's literally what Arcane did, the entire world timeline, character traits and motivations are different now and for what reason?) each time they add something new.
For example, just look at Syndra. Before she was a unique kid in her village, since she had strong magic while others had none or next-to-none, she played pranks, no apparent bad blood with her peers, went on study of her own volition and got betrayed by her teacher whom she killed when he threatened her with magical lobotomy.
Now she's a mentally deficient kid who got bullied comically hard for being... clumsy, who had no magic powers until she ended up killing the local guardian spirit which got her ENTIRE family EXILED, her mother peddled her to the first guy who wanted to take her in, whom she killed, because he dared to reason with her (the part about him threatening her with lobotomy was completely omitted). Then she got INSTANT karma and got sealed by the spirit OF THE ENTIRE CONTINENT for untold centuries.
And that's all she got.
They rewrote her bio with more words, only for most of the new stuff not even be about her and they turned her from an interesting character with interesting, if undeveloped, motivations, into a literal retard who had such a comically awful childhood you can't even feel sympathy for the character. And then they added nothing after, so as far as character development goes, she's in literally the same place as she was before, except now she's unequivocally evil.
I personally really hope they take this opportunity to retcon the sentinels of light story to some extent, either including more characters with stakes or just pretending the entire thing never happened, because in my opinion it was a mistake. The neat thing about League lore is that it is entirely a work of passion. No one's giving money to riot because of the lore, and I'd imagine a tiny, tiny minority of current players came to the game because they found the lore first, and in my opinion when the writers are able to divorce themselves from the financial impact of certain writing decisions, it creates an environment conducive to great storytelling. The same cannot be said for sentinels of light however - It was made, first and foremost, with money in mind and as a result came with some veeery questionable storytelling decisions, but more importantly, making this story to serve a skin line inherently limited the scope of what they could do by forcing this story that realistically should have had just about every influential person in runeterra getting involved to focus on a small group of entirely unrelated characters.
Holy heck, you're right. I actually forgot -erased it from my memory- about it, but if they remove that disaster, that would be awesome.
I know they learned to never have the marketing team handle the narrative team's work ever again... hopefully.
This is a downer honestly. Ekko has been my favorite since his release. Not just because of his gameplay and design, but his actual character and back story. One of the most important and touching elements of his story are his parents, and it never sat right with me that they took that away in Arcane. Now that there's a chance they'll be making that change apart of the official universe, that just sucks.
I play league since forever, I know your channel since forever, but just recently (couple months) I started watching everything you post. Your content is great!
Feels like folks who enjoy the old lore should just look at it the same way Warhammer lore is handled. Everything is canon, contradictions are just people in the universe recounting the stories they heard in different ways.
Look yeah I am still waiting for the Shaco lore to appear, it's been so many years.
I want shaco lore to never change because it's just funny to me and he's the champ that imo would suffer the least from it
About the P&Z lore inconsistency in original League Universe & Arcane... well Riot could potentially make BOTH cannon at the same time, with Ekko being the key to unify the two contradictions. Cuz u know.. he's the boy who shattered time?
So for example, everything that happened in Arcane (Viktor/Singed/Ekko being an orphan) is actually a sequel to the original League lore (when Ekko had parents). How? So the adult Ekko in the original lore may have been obsessed with correcting everything, keeps rewinding, ends up shattering "time" so bad that he unfortunately forced the universe a hard reset to a time point when he was born. Return back to 0, before he even existed, as a newborn baby. This caused him to forgot everything that happened. Reliving his 2nd new life (with no memory of time travelling), somehow his parents died this time and we got Arcane.
So whats next? "Time" was the seal from void invasion, set up by Zilean. So when "Time" got shattered, it caused a void rift, allowing the void to seep into Time dimension. Zilean being the time mage has seen everything what Ekko did, leading him to confront Ekko, to ask for help in sealing back Time. So Ekko would eventually learned what he did.
Or a somewhat plot twist, Zilean was the one who forced a hard reset to Ekko's life, and caused his parents to die this time. So he wont be obsessed about his parents anymore. And not shattering time.
People seem to forget that Arcane being out of canon meant the writers had a lot of liberty, and that's in part what made the series so good
Arcane being canon can change the series for worse. Now, for example, no Champion characters can die or change in a meaningful way beyond the status quo. Idk, time will tell if this is for the better
I agree, one of its core strengths was the tight character focused narratives having to add in Urgot and and Camille (potentially Janna) would have distracted.
props I remember all of your strums talking about the kind of content you could brand into. Honestly I can't wait for the day the mmo finally exists for real so we can see what kind of content you can make from exploring that worlds lore.
I just wanna say... I owe a lot of the success surrounding who I am today to one of the original short stories, and I came across it from your channel. Not a month goes by where I don't listen to that video at least once. Change is always good, but every step along the way also has significance. Thank you for what you do man
Please riot. Do not mess up this like everything else, Arcane is too good for that..
Arcane's lore isn't changing, League's lore is. And it won't change that much either.
Nah they gonna fuck it up lol. Its Riot.
What everything else?
Hopefully they Place quality riding before any other type of message.
This will either fuck up Arcane, or fuck up League's lore. If Arcane's story pushes the league lore forward, the champions in League that didn't appear in Arcane won't be able to do ANYTHING, since they would certainly change the outcome of the story if they acted on it. At the same time, if Arcane is FORCED to be concise with what we have in League, it will NEED to shoehorn in characters that weren't accounted for in the story, because in no pheasible way they would NOT be in a big conflict that will decide the fate of the region (Like Renata Glasc).
Suffice to say this retcon alone already completely destroyed Camille's character, and will force either one side to be completely irrelevant or tarnish the other.
It would had been better if LOL, Arcane, and LOR were their own separate universes instead of one.
Especially arcane. A lot of crucial piltover champs like Camille needed to be absent for arcane's story to function and be so character focused which was a core strength of the show
I wish the OW community had someone as dedicated as you, going to Blizzard headquarters and talking about the lore. It would help keep that connection from community to company from being as disgruntled as it is today. You really do so much for your community and it is worthy of praise. Keep it up
Hammeh comes to mind
@@shieldgenerator7 Yeah, but they upload like once every 2-3 months
All I ask is that they don’t delete any of the stories that already exist, some of them are things that I go back and read regularly
Hi Necrit, from France we love your content til a long time until now. Hope you will still continue on this good track !
This feels like a really big step backward ...
The focus when you are writing a world is to make as many characters interesting as possible and to have them intersect in various ways. They could probably unify the lore website, legends of Runeterra and the new MMO on that singular canon if they want since they all benefit more from an expensive world than from any singular story. But for the adaptations (like Arcane or like RiotFroge games) the point is to have a tight singular story, and it is fundamentally incompatible.
Arcane didn't end up being different from canon randomly, they specifically erased more than half the champions that should have been relevant to the story because focusing fully on a handful of characters and their relationships made for a better show than trying to have dozens of important characters.
They should have left adaptations be adaptations and not try to retroactively fit them into the lore (to the point of erasing so much of it) just because one was popular. If they want good adaptations (like Arcane was), they will have to give some leeway for the creators of those adaptations to be creative (like they did for Arcane), which will mean making some changes to the characters, stories and world. If they want every adaptation to be canon then they will have to either only get adaptations done by yes-men with no creative vision, or retcon everything anytime there is a new adaptation to pretend the newest version (that is selling right now) is the true one, which will mean not having a lore at all.
The Peter Jackson Lord of the Ring movies were a massive hit, and more people are familiar with it's interpretation of the story than with the original one but no one has a problem is it just being an adaptation and not a perfectly canon story.
This is like the fifth time they've retconned League lore, and I doubt it's gonna be the last.
Riot really has no clue what the hell they're doing in terms of lore.
The chances of you seeing this is quite low but I wanted to let you know that I was always interested on YOUR perspective and the way you connected the stories and world together. I only ever read the stories of characters I like such as Ahri or Zoe both of which have so much lore around the places they are from that you put together for me. You really helped to put the whole world into more than just characters for me and I want to thank you for that. I have found myself watching almost all your videos these days because of YOU. You're awesome and I just like hearing you talk a lot of the time. Hope you have a good day!
I know this is’t a popular opinion but I wanted arcane too be non canon. It allowed the show runners more freedom. Because the world wasn’t canon they could do what they wanted with the charter’s stores and they could maybe even kill a charter because the world wasn’t connected too league. I don’t know just my opinion
counter to your point at 26:20, I love League's lore and am extremely invested. I wanted to read the stories, however, due to poor sight and LDs with reading it made it almost impossible to read texts that were that length. I am so grateful for your content! I understand why your content had to switch, and honestly, I loved it before, and I still love it now :)
Finally I've been waiting for you to release a new vid regarding on LOR because of a DEVLOG of LEAGUE about LOR
Everything is canon? You know what's included in "everything"? Oh right! Video 18 of kindly asking Necrit to do a breakdown of the Ruination novel
everything from now*
they will retcon a lot of things including (hopefully) Ruination
@@guifdcanalli and wonder when exactly is NOW because that would require a statement and not a single Necrit video.
The Institute of War era was the best one. It made you feel like a part of the world as a summoner.
The part about riot forge and legends of runeterra didn’t age well
@26:00 yep; i remember when i first discovered your channel, i was already engulfed in the lore & found your theories & commentary on them super refreshing & thought provoking. i tuned in looking forward to hearing your thoughts on new content moving forward (truthfully, i don't even watch the other content on the channel lol)
im a long time fan, im just busy as fuck with life and league's lore is just scattered to the winds so I always really appreciate every time you talk about lore and stories. Will support you even if you choose to become a full time genshin content creator or whatever
