  • Irish-Americans hold a unique place in our history.
On this day 174 years ago, Irish-American immigrant and hero James Shields captured hundreds of prisoners in the battle of Churubusco, during the Mexican-American War. He went on to become the only person in American history to serve as Senator for three different states. He founded the first Irish colony in the state of Minnesota.
But the men he captured in Mexico also played a shocking role in Irish-American history: they were the St. Patrick’s Battalion, fellow Irish immigrants. These men had deserted the U.S. Army to help the Mexicans resist American invasion.
Why did a group of Irishmen fight fiercely against their adopted home? What would become of them once captured by James Shields? And how were they remembered once the war was over?
Learn about the forgotten soldiers of the Mexican-American War.
    Original air date: August 20, 2021 | Season 5, Episode 4
Logan Ledman and Sam Temple are excited to share this fascinating story of nationalism, brutal warfare, and multicultural rebellion in the face of imperialism.

I can dig that! Wish Mexico went as far as reclaiming gold and silver from European countries. But reclaiming Mexican territory would be a great start. Respect Irishman. 👌🏽

I hate the British empire and would love to see a restoration of a United Ireland but as an Irish American I’d rather stick to my own side and have America distance itself from its old colonial oppressor

The fact that the only reason I even KNOW about this is because of a song by an obscure Irish folk singer on TH-cam is almost criminal.
The history classes were like “ok so we beat the British- oh by the way, they burned the White House down- uhhh manifest destiny- yatayatayata, boring boring boring- then THE CIVIL WAR.”
That was in AMERICAN history, mind you, not just world history.

Can't really say Anglo settlers were illegally in the region of Texas. They'd gotten permission from the Mexican government to do so.
I'd also object to your claim that the Texas border was generally thought of as 150 miles north of the Rio Grande. Truth is, the border had been contested ever since Texas tried to break away from Mexico. Texas claimed a much larger area than it even is now (some of modern day Oklahoma and New Mexico as well) . Mexico didn't really accept any of it wasn't Mexico (in fact they rejected the peace treaty Santa Anna had signed and never formally admitted that Texas was an independent country - which is why they were so ticked off when the US annexed it).

5,000 were invited by the Mexican government. By 1836 there were 30,000. Davie Crockett was an ilegal alien. He lost his house race in Tennessee and went illegally to Texas.

After that we can give the land back to the Aztecs, then the Mayans and the tribes before that. As far as Texas is concerned, lets give the land back to the Comanches, and they give it back to the Apacback Wooly Mammoths who had the land before that. Victimhood forever. Did the Irish Republic negotiate in bad faith with the British in the Good Friday agreement? If not, the issue is settled.
