  • Thanks once again to the combined efforts of the members of the WML Facebook group, I'm pleased to be able to share this newly discovered 1952 film narrated by John Charles Daly! As with other very rare material posted to this channel (a previously lost WML episode, and a WML spoof done on the Garry Moore Show), Stan Taffel provided his expertise in both winning the auction in the first place, and even more importantly, restoring and transferring the film itself.
So again, this wouldn't have been possible without the never-ending, always-enthusiastic support of the fan community, who in this case contributed the funds to purchase the film, while Stan did, well, everything else. :) Stan has a couple of websites which I hope folks will take some time to check out:
    - To learn more about his screenings in the Los Angeles area, and more generally, the film preservation projects he's working on: hollywoodparty....
    - And his personal website: stantaffel.com/
This is just the first new video of many more to come this summer, all to be posted on the weekend, leading up to a really big surprise that no one's going to see coming for a mile. Stay tuned!
    ---------------------------------------
    WATERMARK EXPLANATION:
I apologize if any folks are irked at the watermark added to the video. I hope no one finds it overly distracting, but this is the least intrusive I could possibly make it without leaving myself vulnerable to theft of the video. There are thieving channels all over TH-cam that do nothing but download other people's posts and reupload them to steal the views, and a watermark is the only effective defense against it.

Thank you for finding and sharing this gem of a film!
How I wish we had more John Charles Daly's around today. He could sure teach a lesson or two to all journalists and "journalists" in msm. I never get tired of watching or listening to him.
This was especially interesting since I am a former LPN (perhaps last of a generation of how nursing used to be with our nursing caps, white uniforms and tlc care we provided our patients), graduating thirty yrs after this convention. Thanks again WML!

Back in 1952, I was in first grade, and every Friday was "movie day", we'd all file into a room and watch a newsreel, and some educational film that had the same "flavor" as this one! It brought back memories! John Daly had a marvelous news and commentary voice, it was the "voice of God" that "told the truth". It was corny and stiff by today's standards, but people my age learned the "right" way to do things from films like that! Thanks for finding that!

I've discovered the WML very recently, about 3 months ago and somehow became very fascinated with it. And of course John Daly is one of the greatest reasons why I loved this show so much. Me being a non-native English speaker, I find his speaking excellent. In WML, he speaks in a quite sophisticated manner and at the same time in a very easily comprehensible manner for us the foreigners. Actually, when I watch his programs, I don't feel anything foreign, not in another continent in a big city like the NY, I feel as if I'm conversating with my close relations! That applies to the other contributors of the program, B. Cerf, A. Francais, D. Kilgallen and Steve & Fred Allen, and others. I'm just so glad to have seen them.

Thank you kindly for sharing this film (from an Australian nurse).
They say that the culture of nursing is changing but isn't this why nursing is considered a practice?
However I am fascinated by our history and I am proud to be registered as a nursing professional.
I'm also new to nursing, I'm only 15 years in...
    Many thanks again.

What a gem of Discovery here! It is so interesting to see the state of the nursing profession nearly 70 years ago. This video has expanded tremendously my appreciation for the history of on the current state of nursing here and throughout the world.

Thank you so much for uploading this film! As a Nurse who was born in NJ in 1952 and graduated with my BSN from TSC (now TCNJ) I found this fascinating. :) I've been to the Nursing convention in Atlantic City in the 70's... ;)

John Daly was such a pro -- well-spoken and always polite. He lived in the neighboring village to my family in Westchester county, N.Y. for many years. Listen to his Pearl Harbor broadcasts sometime also. Thanks for posting this (my grandmother also might have been here -- she was a nurse for many years).

Do you know how many Nursing associations there are now, and whether or not they ever realized the goals of uniting and restructuring some of the disparate nursing organizations, as expressed in this film and at this convention?

      Hi, Sabine!

No, I didn't know, but I can gess: I would say more than five Organisations at least.
The reason, you have the 4 old ones. There are the possibility that some members don't like the Idea of a new organisation and would stay in their old one. And so a "new" old organisation is born and so on...
and maybe there is a organisation for people with latin american background now and one for people with an asian one. I really don't know this from here in Germany.
But to see this take place, ten years before I even was born, this was an interesting glimpse in nursing history for me. Especially the uniforms. When I studied nursing, my uniform has some similarity to this. But I learned in a church owned Hospital in East Germany, so there was a lot of tradition and quite a bit of demarcation to the official political system.

Did she ever tell you anything else about it? We've been wondering whether John Charles Daly was actually reporting on it on the scene or was just hired to do the narration for the film. I'm also wondering whether or not they achieved the goals of the convention.

I am pretty sure they did reach their organizational goals of creating two new groups--as i do recall her talking about how that happened before she retired after 40 years in 1970. But I was never old enough to ask her about anything else.

Nice diction, got the "Continental accent" going on. I never knew why our country did that. I assume we had a complex and began to drop it post WWII cause we became a supper power.

The National League for Nursing still exists today serving "more than 40,000 individual and 1,200 education and associate members." I find it interesting, and admirable, that each of the speakers was so well spoken. Not a "like, yeah" or "absolutely" among them.

Wait a minute! What-the-hell does the woman mean by "The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of All Its Parts'? Maybe I missed something back in first grade, but I always thought that the SUM was THE WHOLE of the parts being added together.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You've honestly never heard this expression before? I'm not trying to be snarky here, sincerely, but it's a very common english idiom. It just means that the individual parts of a thing are more valuable/important as a UNIT than they are separately. The pieces of a car are a lot more valuable when they're assembled into a car than when they're strewn along a garage floor: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
