    I have a quad motor, I would 100% get the dual non-Performance setup on my next Rivian. If you’re wondering which one to get, test drive them. The quad is fking fast, just excessive 😂 I would absolutely get another Rivian after this one, love this truck so much.

      Same. I love my early quad motor; but the dual-motor would be more than enough for my use. Especially since max pack will only be available in dual-motor. All-Terrain mode has been plenty for all offroading I've done, including soft sand and rock crawling; Sport mode I've only ever used half a dozen times "to show off" to a passenger.

    9 months of Quad Motor with Adventure Pack. absolutely love it. That being said, after 6,000 miles of daily driving, long highway trips and two or three muddy off-road adventures. I'd go with a dual motor, 21" wheels, skip the adventure package and tonneau cover. I still love putting it in Sport and launching it, but its not necessary.

    I feel like Rivian missed out on the opportunity to make the dual motor better. Put in locking differentials and it will out perform the quad motor version offroad. When things get tough having locked diffs is much better than the separate motors trying to figure out how much power to add to which wheels and when.

    • @TSERJI
      @TSERJI 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They could have added locking diffs to the dual-motors (and if they want to, they still can do so in the future via software), but that would have cannibalized the quad-motor sales

    The dual motor is nice, I'd be interested in the base, but it needs to be ~15k cheaper IMO. 75K is a big ask for a 270mi range truck.
    For 5k less, the F150 lightning XLT extended range is a much better deal. While the F150 isn't quite as nice inside, and the software is still mediocre, I think the tradeoff is worth it. The 9.6kW pro-power function is really nice too.
    Even though there will be adapters, probably going to wait until NACS comes on these trucks. Plus I'd like to wait a couple more years until my current vehicle is paid off as this would be a secondary vehicle.

      I had a forest green decked out model for a couple days before flipping it. Why? Because the wife and I like the Tesla Model X (latest gen) better... smoother, more quiet. The R1S was great on pavement, drove awesome in 6 inches of snow on freeway at 60 mph, but the internal pump system was loud. Also, not as roomy as the X in our opinion. But we had friends that liked the R1S better. But on the road, it was great but not as good as the Tesla.

    I had rented a rivian r1t on turo for a week to see if loved the ev truck life and boy did I. I had a rivian dual motor larger battery pack on pre order for 4 months. It came time to build it. The total before tax here in nv was 97k I did pick the off road package. Being a bigger guy and transporting things here in town. The f150 lightning seemed like the smarter choice. Lightning msrp is 79k, almost 20k less.

    Thanks for the video. Did they happen to mention the capacity of the MAX battery pack? I have a MAX Quad on pre-order from years ago. Max Pack is no longer available with the Quad motors, so they bumped us down to the MAX Performance Dual. What really sucks is the price difference they give for us early pre-orders is only a $500 discount going from the Quad to the Performance Dual, instead of the $3000 they charge for new orders. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth sticking with the MAX upgrade for $10k more than the Large battery pack, and downgrade to the Performance Dual instead of the Quad motor with only a $500 price difference. I would save $9500 going with the Large Quad configuration. I'm not in a huge hurry since I want the redesigned powered tonneau cover, which they haven't yet started offering yet. RJ also mentioned that they were working on a Max Pack Quad still on a past IG live video, so have you heard if that is still in the works?

    I can't wait for you guys to test these two drivetrains back to back. I actually think the two-motor has the potential to outperform the four-motor off-road. Toyota's ATRAC already outperforms Rivian's four-motor torque vector programming due to the simplicity and power of a typical brake hydraulic system. Not all brake torque vector programming is the same obviously but if Rivian can approach the same level of precision that Toyota and Land Rover etc achieve then I think it will outperform the four-motor, especially given that controlling wheel speed in an off-road EV is more difficult than in a tradition truck with low-range engaged. Edit: Just watched the little clip of the brake torque vectoring "working"....hahaha. Working isn't the word I would use. The wheel clearly hangs in the air and spins freely for several seconds longer than Toyota's system would've done. I imagine the reason they're saying the four-motor will be better is simply because they're not using the brakes aggressively enough. Your own channel testing has proven that the 4Runner and Land Cruiser et al already perform notably better with considerably less wheelspin than the four-motor Rivian so obviously their brake torque vectoring has a lot more potential than they're alluding to. TFL should try to get a Rivian R1S, a Ineos Grenadier, and a Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner all in the same test together to see what happens.

    I've always thought Rivian has a great product. I would like to see this tested a little more extensively off-road. I know you guys have done videos in the past on that. Reason why is I want to see what the throttle control and response is off-road. On a conventional torque converter ICE setup, you can hear the engine rev and you'll know how much power you're applying to your tires. Does this Rivian have a similar feel? Or does it cut torque if the motor gets overloaded? Maybe artificial RPM matched noise would be helpful in this situation?
    I like the price at $73K. While still high, I think it's within reach of more buyers. Sub $60K would be ideal, but I think that ship has sailed.
    I recently had read a Jalopnik article headline (the article wouldn't load) where the Journalist was at this plant (assuming it was the same press event) and for some reason there was a Mitsubishi Triton in the parking lot. Any ideas as to why?

I have a quad and we tow a good bit of long distance with a camper. Dual Max w/22" tires is 360 miles or 170 ish towing vs 143 miles in my Quad (we normally get about 1.1miles/kW so only 27 additional miles). My build today would be $92,250 vs $94,250 for a Dual Max and $99,250 for a Dual Performance Max. Just feels like I'm giving up a lot for a Dual...Quad has Conserver Mode which I can self-select. Tommy, drive a curvy road (spirited driving) in Dual vs Quad. The Quad in Conserve should be similar to a Dual and it feels a bit scary or tail-happy, put in Sport or All-Purpose and it's on rails. For me, the Dual needs to be a lot less money.

That has you still qualify if only a certain percentage of the model's sold have those imported cells. You can assemble the pack's locally using a certain amount of local materials and labor. Thereby qualifying for the credits.
      It's all quite complicated though and convoluted to understand imo. With percentages and materials imported from trade partners that allow you to qualify for them escalating each new year. 😑

    I’d be _really_ interested to know the real world highway towing range of the max pack dual motor with a 5 - 7,000 lb camper. Frankly, TFL towing tests have scared me off both the Rivian and Ford e-trucks. They’re cool vehicles, but they just don’t cut it with my truck usage. I’m hoping the dual motor setup might make a positive difference.

      @digger450r 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It probably won't make a huge difference. The big range killer on EV trucks on the highway is drag, and a camper at 70 is like pulling a parachute. Weight isn't nearly as relevant once you get going unless you're gaining elevation.

      Agree….my current ICE truck loses about 50% of range when I pull an airstream but the huge difference is that I can pull into a gas station and fill up easily. Even using the Tesla supercharger network (wife drives a Tesla) it won’t work for quite some time without the ability to pull through. Imagine dropping a boat/trailer every 200ish miles.

    410 miles or 660 kms is impressive BUT here in Canada that would not get me to my camp because there are no chargers once in the mode northern parts of Ontario. It is hard to find a gas station in many areas. I will be dead before tbis becomes main stream...if it even does.

    The quad motor is on par if not better then locking diff.
    The time the computer required to “think” does not stop the torque delivery
    Spinning wheel in the quad motor does not mean less torque in the gripping wheel
    The dual motor just isn’t for off roading at all

    Whats interesting is that Rivian could make the Dual motor the better off-roader, but they don't. If the dual motor had. locking differentials it would be able to vector MORE torque to individual wheels than the quad motor ever could. The quad motor delivers 206/247 lbs-ft per motor Front/Rear. After reduction of 12.9:1, each wheel can get 2657/3186 lbs-ft front/rear. (That sounds like a lot but anything with a low range beats these numbers)...
    With the dual motor performance, each motor has 428 lbs-ft. The front ratio is 11:1 and the rear is 13.7 so that means 4708/5863 lbs-ft front axle/rear axle. Right now it's open diff so no more than half of each of those make it to the wheels with brake based traction control, so 2354/2931 F/R to each individual wheel, which is slightly less than the quad motor. If you put a locking differential in there you can vector 100% of the motors torque to individual wheels meaning FAR more torque to individual wheels compared with the quad motor. Plus a locking differential solves the biggest problem with quad - speed and torque biasing software. You can't "lock" a quad motor because syncing wheel speed and wheel torque is extremely complicated - You can't just send equal current to each motor because the motor with no traction would then not spin the same speed as the one with traction. It's all done with software and its not easy. With a locker speed bias is taken out of the equation so you don't have to worry about it, just send the commanded torque to the motor and let the axle figure out the torque split instantly with no wheelspin issues. Even a light limited slip with traction control would be able to bias more torque, and more quickly than the quad motor could.
    Looking at the non-performance dual motor the numbers are 305 lbs-ft for 3355/4179. With a locking differential front and rear even the lowest power dual motor could deliver between 25-30% more individual wheel torque compared to the quad off-road.

    You forgot to mention that the warranty for the dual motor configuration is inexplicably shorter than the quad motor. The quad motor basic warranty is 5 years 60k miles, and 8 yr 175k miles on the drivetrain and battery. The dual motor is reduced to 4 yrs 50k miles and drivetrain 8 yrs 175k miles but battery 8 yrs 150k miles. Do they not have as much faith in their own battery engineering (vs the quad motor made by Bosch I think)

      Check out EV reviews from Norway. It’s just as cold and what is out there now works. New technology going into production will make things better. If your car is plugged in, you can warm it and the battery with about $1 worth of electricity,same as remote starting an ICE vehicle, but a lot cheaper than gas or diesel.

    I feel like were in stage two of how electric vehicles are sold to the public. All the manufactures were scrambling to put out good numbers when they were bringing these products to market. Now their starting to pull back a little and giving us more mileage which in turn is giving us a cheaper product. These are still niche vehicles and still quite expensive. Give me a two motor, RWD with all the batteries and make it under 60k. That is the truck or SUV of the future.
