Shoot, no luck needed, i didnt have a torch so i used this high powered heat gun i have, took longer and didnt fall in like yours, but i didnt need to go buy a press for that job, so this video saved me some cash, i still need to fo the alignment,, got any good diy videos on that?
Appreciate your videos in your content of planning on doing this on my daughters 1998 CRV all-wheel drive anything else besides the lower ball joints I should change it's my understanding they fail Thanks
I think those mini fridge freezer compartments are colder than normal freezers because it seemed to work better in this video than it did for me and your ball joint looked way more frosty than mine did. Still big time thank you (just some input on the people complaining lol)
I tried doing this on my '98 CRV yesterday...didn't even come close to practically just falling into the opening like he demonstrated in the video. Today I made a trip to Harbor Freight to pick up their Maddox Ball Joint Press to finish the job. I really wanted his method to work but it didn't in my case. Oh well.
Did you have any luck with that ball joint press kit? I have the same but none of the cups were the correct diameter for the lower ball joint as the closest one would still be touching a small part of the wall right below the wheel bearing.
@@jarradbaker9878 I tried doing ball joint separator methods that I've seen others on TH-cam have done but to still no avail. Instead, I just went ahead and bought the entire LCA as the price difference were not too bad personally.
@@KookiDowg the ball joint separator didn’t work out for me so i just used the same method in the video and heated up the surrounding part of the ball joint with a torch and threw the ball joint in the freezer and it went in with a couple of wacks with the hammer.
I've heard of this method before, interesting to see it in practice. Two things I would be concerned about though...since you have to get the metal so hot, I would worry about the ball joint boot possibly getting melted. And having to tap it in possibly warping the chamber the ball sits in.
The metal isn't molten and the boot is frosty from the freezer. I've never had an issue with the boots. I've used this method on countless Honda's. The little hammering you have to do isn't enough to distort the metal to effect the cup.
Well this didn't work for shit for me the ball joint went a quarter of the way in and got stuck I heated the damn knuckle for like 10 minutes and left the ball joint in the freezer overnight and it didn't work.

I used to do that trick too putting my ball joints in the freezer. I can't know wife would hurt me in a way I would like regardless but be give me a bad time all night.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you
Dude you are a genius, I'm doing my whole suspension on my 98 crv and ive been dreading the lower ball joint
Good luck man!

Your smart for doing this. Makes it simple to install.
For sure. I've been doing it this way for years without issue.
Tnk u for video. Is it possible lower ball joint part doesnt hav cotter pin? Mine dont
Some of the aftermarket units have a nylon nut
@@hondaresource actually found out they are locking nuts instead of castle nut with locking pin
Thanks again brother! 👍🏻
Wow awesome job, nice to learn new tricks. I'm about to this this one out.
Muchas gracias amigo te agradezco, saludos desde Costa Rica

Hell ya bro that’s my kinda shit! Thanks for the badass tip and saving me the money for the Honda kit and a press set deposit! 😎
Thanks buddy. This helped a lot.
what brand do you recommend for upper and lower control arms for 97-01 honda crv? I am currently looking to replace them all since they're all shot.

Idk if ull see this being tht the vid is 5 years old.. are these the jpn ball joints off ebay?
I recommend three 5

Thanks man!!
Anyway you can get the ball joint out without stripping the knuckle down?
Not really.
I have a 1997 Honda CRV automatic will parts off a 2000 fit looking to get steering Knuckles are they interchangeable
Yes they will 👍

OEM do not have a snap ring

I've also noticed a high rubber/rubbing sound when reversing & turning the wheel..any suggestions?
Is it in the rear?
Started happening to me a day later my u joint for the drive shaft snapped !!
On a 1997 Honda CRV do you have to replace knuckle with ball joint or can you just take the ball joint out and replace with new one
The ball joint is replaceable.
@@hondaresource thanks for your advice I was looking at other one saying you had to buy knuckle with ball joint attached
@@hondaresource so basically do it what your video shows
@@derekwilson8011 you can't just but the ball joint at Honda, maybe that is what they were talking about. This video is 97-01 crv so yep!

This work the same on the upper?

I’m going to try to freeze it and try to see if that goes in. If it doesn’t then I’ll use the torch. Thanks.
Can I just hammer it out without removing the spindle from the car?
Yes. That's how I do them now
That was crazy!!!😜
I hope you find it useful
I Literally was beaten mines earlier.
End up quitting. Trying this tomorrow
Excellent! Just gotta be careful not to let the rubber boot touch the hot part when inserting. Talking from experience 😅
wow i’m definitely putting mine in the freezer lol
It works like a charm
Nice, hanging the caliper from the hose made me cringe though.
