This is a weird one but I did make the "mistake" of buying a Wayfair piece to mimic an antique I coveted. It wasn't meant to be an exact copy but I was going to flip it to get closer to the desired look. The piece is a solid wood shabby chic white desk. It was super discounted and I would have never been able to afford a huge real wood desk even vintage. I never got around to repainting it or changing the hardware because I didn't research well enough how much work it would be to get the look I wanted. This made me think it was a disaster for a long time and I debated selling it and buying something else. I actually like the idea of keeping it now since the rest of my room has started coming together. It will be the one large piece that isn't Art Deco or MCM vibes and looks serene against my white wall. It just adds a relaxed, earthy feel. It makes the room feel less "done". I think if the material was cheap or it the details were tacky it wouldn't work but it's a fairly simple desk. So just goes to show sometimes live with something and work around it instead of rushing to replace it and you may be surprised. It's been two years and I actually think it works now.
i love you! this popped up in my feed as i'm just starting with my first apartment. i think it's made me realize there's no need to "rush" the full look of an apartment...i'm excited for the journey!

Great video! I'd add these tips: don't buy mass produced art, instead thrift it, buy from local artists, or even make your own. Some of my favorite pieces are just framed fabric scraps. Also, if you feel like your space needs a refresh, try just rearranging your furniture and decor. Swap things from different rooms, "shop" your house. And definitely join freecycle groups in your neighborhood. Get rid of things you don't need or use!! I bet 90% of people who rent a storage space just have too much stuff and need to get rid of it. Hello! Love your videos. I think the pics you put for laminate countertops and vinyl flooring were actually linoleum! It's a really cool environmentally friendly material and is way more durable than vinyl and laminate
Many of the stuff you mentioned in this series reflect my apartment. This is great validation cause I just thought I was being silly, so I am not going to get that bed frame honestly or that new shelf. Thank you PS: I absolutely love coming onto yt just to watch your videos or even rewatching the older ones. Keep going, you got this!!!
I'm gonna do an annoying sustainability plug (and prob many here agree): if you already have fake wood laminate in good shape, avoid ripping it all out. I almost bought a house. It had fake wood flooring that looked bad, but it was in good shape and it would be wasteful to rip it all up. I have to remind myself: be patient and be mindful of feeling like everything has to be a reflection of my style/aesthetic values. I can still be who I am with ugly fake wood floors 😆. Area rugs and furniture placement can do wonders. This kind of fits with the point about context.
@@BC-np8cb I totally agree!! I was kicking myself for not saying this when I was talking about working around certain features you don’t like. That includes all the things I claim to hate, even faux materials. 🌟
I love your channel! The curated images that you post alongside really help you see these different things in homes. Lots to think about for my own home.
I agree with (nearly) all of this, but as a person who just looked at hundreds and hundreds of luxury vinyl plank samples, authentic looking vinyl planks are out there for people who can't afford hardwood. 99% of them look like crap, but if you have to have a good eye and look at them side by side with wood, you can find something. Carpet is bad if you have allergies, pets or kids, you can't replace a piece of a vinyl sheet flooring very easily if it becomes damaged and tile is freezing and slippery.

Great and thoughtful points! Subscribed. I want to say about the "honest materials only" point though. I've been considering it a lot, I get that it's one of the principles of modernism and a lot of designers swear by it, so you hear it quite a bit. But I suspect there's a reason that wood imitation floors for example are so popular, and I don't think it is that people want to trick their neighbors into thinking they have hardwood floors (I assume most of us can tell the difference every time and thus we know that others can also). My guess is that people are psychologically so drawn to natural materials that a reasonably convincing fake will feel more comfortable than an "honestly artificial” material, even when we can tell that it’s fake. I look at the examples of such honestly artificial floors you posted and to be honest to me none of them look like something I’d rather have in my home than a high quality LVP. I don’t know of any studies covering surface materials, but I did hear of one about artificial plants, which might serve as a relevant comparison: there are psychological benefits to having plants indoors, something like reduced anxiety and increased well-being, and interestingly the benefits are the same for fake plants, even when we know they’re fake. If the same goes for imitation materials, I’m wondering if it makes sense to cross them out of the design repertoire?
fyi most of your pics with 'vinyl' flooring are actually linoleum flooring and are not 'cheap' but a high quality sustainable floor covering alternative.
I love this series! Just found your channel and will be back. 😊 Requesting an in depth video on flooring with more examples of well done spaces using lesser expensive, authentic/honest materials. I'm going to have to disagree with you on the laminate and vinyl countertops and flooring. They will look really good at first but they don't have any secrets. Very quickly over time they were wear down especially in the kitchen and look bad. Especially some of the white examples you showed.
