They normally don't play together in their own countries, so this is even more awesome how well they listen to each other. Ewan played a lot with Tuba Skinny in New Orleans when he used to visit more often, but I guess he's too busy with his own bands in the UK lately. He plays with The Man Overboard and other bands. How does anyone give such music a Thumbs Down? In addition to the general virtuosity on display, the improvisational cooperation of such music is...frankly...beyond most of the world's most accomplished musicians. It takes a special kind of skill to navigate and negotiate good jazz, and y'all knocked it out of the park! I only wish I had been there, so I could have thrown money at you!

These are the true musical celebrities, not the screaming, pyrotechnics, light show supported folks we hear far too much of. Take all the glitz away and there is not much underneath in terms of real musical talent. These jazz artists are top drawer highly talented musicians in the true sense of the word. @@ShevillMathers I miss the sax. I was first chair on Tenor and Baritone in junior high; had to use the school's "loaners" because, as you know, saxes ain't cheap. Anyway, the director at my first school was a bit of tyrant, so I was actually somewhat excited when the school district drew new boundaries; I hoped a new school would have a better director. NOPE! The second was even worse than the first, so (much as I regret leaving the sax behind) I switched to choir. Turns out, in my most difficult, adolescent years, that choir teacher...pretty literally...saved my life. Now, I sing and play several instruments, some quite proficiently, especially the Mississipi Sax (AKA: Harmonica).
Speaking of which, if the toll that age is taking involves less nimble fingers, the harmonica is an option worth exploring...being almost entirely about embouchure.

I am heading towards 86 and still pretty active-other than the arthritis etc. Grew up with Chris Barber, Lonnie Donnegan, Aker Bilk and all those well known names. I had a skiffle group and small jazz band during my days as a medic at a Royal Air Force Hospital in Germany- mid 1950's. Many today would not even know what a skiffle group was. Hey y'all, this is hot jazz, not dixieland! Not trying to be rude by any means. Dixieland is what they called it in the 50's/60's. It was a revival of the O.G. shit, which was called hot jazz in the 20's & 30's...What the gal is doing is called "Blue Blowing" (and she's bad ass at it btw). Check out the early recordings of a band called Mound City Blue Blowers to get an example of what it is.. That is Ewan Bleach on clarinet, my other fav clarinetist to play with, and yes, he plays with Tuba Skinny on occasion and visits nola to play. You're indeed lucky if you catch him while he's there. He's hot (playing) as fuck..This is just a typical pick up band of folks who share the same language. "They called it jazz".

I commented once before on this video, but wanted to say something else. I've watched this several times, and it has become one of my very favorites. Here in Northern California I do not have the opportunity to sit and listen to any dixieland. I suppose there's some in San Francisco, but that's over 6 hours away from me. I would love to be able to spend some days enjoying this style of music, but it's not in the cards locally. For those of you who have that opportunity, please count your blessings. It has always been my desire to be able to play the clarinet, and I recently came into possession of one. So, I'm going to give it a go. I'm not entirely certain that age 55 it's the best time to take it up, but you never know until you try. It will be videos like this that will help to spur me on. Perhaps some day I'll get to pick a tune with ya right there on the street. Maybe...just maybe.

sweatysocks2 Go for it, man. I'm a music teacher and I also play clarinet and I also love dixieland. And I'm 55, too! I play jazz but not dixieland, but I have always wanted to. All you need is a good horn (you've got one), a teacher, and some time to practice. It's not as hard as you may think Nothing is stopping you from being able to play like this… except you!
