Doreen became a friend when I lived in New Orleans. She and her family played in the street near my work. I was stunned hearing her the first time .. .and every time thereafter. She is a mother, a grandmother and a friend to all who know her. She's started her grandchildon percussion right there on Royal Street. When not playing, she's got that little one right there doing homework! When I moved from New Orlans (The home of my heart), I saw her and said good by - waving from my car. She stopped playing came over and reached in giving me a hug (and a CD for the road) and said, I lovey you, God loves you. What better way to be sent off on my next adventure.
Thank you for sharing your story! I love to read personal impressions and experiences! Yeah, hope her music still accompanies to your present adventure :-)
Towards the end, that one note she must have held for almost 2 minutes. She has amazing lungs and carries herself so well. I'd pay her and the tuba player along with the drummer to record the old songs that jazz was playing back in the 30's and 40's. I wouldn't care about the cost or if the recording made money, it would be an honour to have Doreen record songs that I grew up with and listened to most of my life.
***** Sorry, but that's just not true. You think wrong. I'm not knocking California, I think the state is absolutely beautiful. Just wish your ocean waters were warmer...freezing, even in August.
AnAscendingAngel I would like to spend time in Nola how is it? Race wise, is the weather that bad? And can you fill up a day with activities there, I heard it's so small?
Man, I'm a high school jazz drummer/tuba and I'm not used to hearing the high register of the clarinets without squeaks. She is just a wonderful performer. Givin' respect.
Yesss beautiful amazing & very talented she's truly mastered the art of rockin the clarinet. Took me over a year to be able to play altissmo notes successfully without squeaks I'm still learning with along way to go. This just fuels my inspiration 💖
In my 64 years, I've listened to all types of music, this lady is out of the spectrum. Took me to another galaxy!!! Harmony, pitch perfect, range all enveloped in pure soul, like WOW!!!!!
Holy shit she's freakin amazing. There's not enough money in the world to compensate her for her unique approach and musical gifts. I'm now completely obsessed with Doreen Ketchens!
This lady shares her gift from God openly and freely to anyone who will simply listen. I happened upon her one Sunday morning walking to Cafe du Mon and was stopped in my tracks. This soulful spiritual rocks you to your core and force you to pause, and be thanks to God from which this talent comes. I bought her CD and searched later to learn that she was an accomplished artist, not surprised but felt even more grateful for having witnessed her humility on display and all I could do was smile.
This right here is the reason I love New Orleans. Music is the lifeblood of that town. I have actually seen this woman playing in the French Quarter. You don't only hear her, you feel her. Let the good times roll.

Ric is from NOLA, and lived in the Pontalba on Jackson Square for 35+ years before Katrina in 2005. He remembers Doreen with great fondness. Hope to hear her in person, playing there on Royal Street, when hubby and I return to New Orleans for good, in 2019...He will be coming back to his beloved home. Not so...my very black daughter played the clarinet in elementary school. And what's wrong with "white girls who play jazz?" Love me some Candy Dulfer!
Seven years later I saw them Sunday October 24, 2017 1:00pm on Royal Street. The young girl with her school books is now all grown up and playing drums with them and they added one trumpet player and a white dude on guitar. The highlight of my day.
Ive been reading about new orleans Jazz since i was 14 and now im 46, and the mystery of these wonderful people still amazes me, so much talent in one place, i really wish that one good day i will be able to set my foot on that land even just for a single day, i will kiss the street, hug at least anyone who wishes to take a photo with me in front of a sign written New Orleans, then i will have peace, with love from Botswana

I still love this Lady and bow down to her talents. Do y’all know how hard it is to blow a high C on a clarinet? And she takes it beyond that beautifully ten some. Give this artist her props! Much love from Ga!
You don't have to know squat about music to know that this woman's clarinet is the definition of PERFECTION. And I don't know how anyone can walk by this. I don't care where you're going or what you have to do -- it won't save your soul the way Doreen can.

She had just been crowned the queen of clarinets! She's awesome and I own one of her CD's. My uncle goes to New Orleans all the time and he actually met her, that's how I got the CD. And, did you know the guy playing tuba is her husband? He's actually not a bad player either.
So glad you discoverd Doreen and thanks for watching. Wow, Carnegie Hall, I guess when a musician made it to Carnegie Hall, that´s an achievement. Never been there but that´s what ppl say...
@@bucaneromax1 I found it when I search for her name. My understanding is she was interviewed by PBS and she said that playing at Carnegie Hall was her dream they helped make it happen! She’s also performed at other beautiful big music venues. she has a website where you can buy her music directly. I need to do that soon.
When I turn on the radio I hear absolute garbage from people banking big time. These are the types of musicians that should really be "making it." The music industry (among other things), is so upside down! Great performance!

Jay-R I'm sorry but I think you're wrong. The type of music that TK. Archibald is talking about actually is garbage. Granted, not all music on the radio is garbage, but if you turn on your radio and go to a random station, chances are that music will be garbage. Of course the term "garbage" is relative. I personally think that most contemporary music today, especially rap, is garbage, but if you like it then that's your opinion. People have different tastes in music. Doreen Ketchens and her little ensemble have got it all. Their amazing control of their instruments (their lungs) and the musical instruments is one that can hardly be duplicated and will come around only once in a generation. Benny Goodman was just such a person. He had the breath control of an opera singer and the mastery of his instrument that hardly anyone could compare to. This is now my favourite music video and will be for a long time.
i love doreen. and what i love the most is she has played all over the world and for four presidents and she prefers to play on Royal St. New Orleans, LA USA. I saw her the other day as i walked down the street. God bless Doreen and her husband Larry on the sousaphone.
Jonathan Bergeron I went to see Tool in late Jan of 16, weekend before Mardi Gras, beautiful weather, not too busy. I bet I watched her for three hours Saturday, and would have more Sunday but friends from the coast showed up. I lived in Biloxi for 27 years and did the things 18-25 year old guys do. I spent two nights there that weekend and had a blast, prolly moreso during the day. I want to go back and be a tourist now.
MAGNIFICENT!!! She is making it happen!!!! God Bless her!!!!!!!!! She is a stunning musician!!! I would love to know what clarinet she is playing. Certainly a quality clarinet and she is maximizing it with her skill, talent and passion!!!! And oh my Lord, her vocals!!!! Brings tears!!!
THEY SHOULD BE FAMOUS! I’m a clarinet player and she was playing that damn clarinet like she was performing for the whole world! I DAMN LOVE IT!!! KEEP IT UP! I hope someone famous sees this
Watching Oct 1 2021 and it says this is 10 years ago I hope that she is in good health and will play for years to come continuing to make people feel happy And that she plays all over the world to spread her talent
Doreen is timeless...;-) I revisited her in 2015 to hear her again and made the same song request... I really do hope, she and her band are in good health today, without her, NOLA wouldn´t be the same...
I've listened to as many versions of this song as I can find, and I think this is probably one of the best arrangements and versions of this song. Doreen's clarinet playing and singing are phenomonal.
Stumbled across this randomly and wondered why it had nearly 2 million views...I saw why in the first 10 seconds, this is incredible. The clarinetist is INCREDIBLE! If I walked past this I would be forced to empty my wallet.
This is New Orleans , was land of dreams! Before Katrina , of course. Gog Bless New Orleans forever , and all that wonderful jazz musicians. I love NO and Just A Closer Walk With Thee is, by far my, preference or my funeral. Amen
bucaneromax1 Thanks for the post. The first time i heard this song was at Preservation Hall, january 1974, Sweet Emma Barrett singing and playing piano with all those great old cats. Great times, man, great times ! Nice to meet you. Bucaneromax1. Fabio from Brazil!
***** Hi Fabio, sorry for the late answer! Are you kidding me, you heard Sweet Emma Barrett??? I envy you! Just saw an old video of her, thinking wow...I wanted to see her live...and Lizzy Miles, too! Julia from Austria :-D
Yes my friend. It was january 6, 1974 ,when I had the privilege to see and hear Sweet Emma Barrett and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band with all these old cats at Preservation Hall NO. I bought an LP there and a folder named Old Jazz ,with 6 beautiful lithographs, made by an artist named McBride, of Sweet Emma, Blanche Thomas, George Lewis , Albert "Papa"French, Wildren "Frog"Joseph an a New Orleans Function of a NO Parade Band. 40 ys. later I remember this night, as today. After the show ,my pregnant wife and me returned to the Holliday Inn Hotel walking by the streets feeling and flavoring the rich sounds and people of French Quartier. We are still happy remembering this. That's Life. " Memories are made of This " !
Wow! These are memories for life!!! I know what you mean, just strolling down the streets of NO...I want to return asap! I´ve been there only once, but had a deep impact on me! Well, thanks for sharing your memories with us...I´ll check the artists you mentioned. At least here in Austria hardly anybody knows them...:-( Have a nice day!
I love Albert Nicholas, especially the recording which is called "Posledni Blues" But he died long time ago. But compared to the clarinet players today there´s is no one who is on the same street as Doreen Ketchens. My personal opinion.
She accompanied the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in March, 2018. She was so humbled to have been invited and the Philharmonic was graced by her participation. (Not to mention, as usual she knocked it out of the park). Love Miss Doreen ❤️

Sounds like Charlie Parker
This lady’s playing gives me goose bumps.
She made me cry
Who on earth would dislike this?
A trumpet player 😒 😋
did you mean: the instrument that over powers the rest of the band
Exactly, They're fantastic.
Kerry Taylor Kanye West.
NEVER LUCKY Louis Armstrong actually studied Larry Shield's clarinet licks though when he was first starting out
I like how the sousaphone player has the maraca too
Lol that's what I like about the tuba is that you can play other instruments at the same time
Ophis tuba: any valve instrument.
It's a tuba
It’s a SOUSAPHONE!
@@yeeturmcbeetur8197 not a trumpet really you need the other hand to kick that slide out for the D's
Some people take their craft or their gift seriously. That girl can play!
+Richard Winston I was thinking the same thing. she's outstanding on that clarinet!
with anybody, anywhere. True dat
Gift or... practice and hard discipline (she studies too much for that)

Someone Get This Woman A Record Deal!

When you go see them on the street in NOLA, as I have twice, Doreen will sell you their CDs.
I was confused why this wasn't the first thing that popped up when I searched clarinet player.
Right!

Disbounded x watch the clarinet player from Switzerland play Jingle Bells. I was blown away.these two are really talented💚
Be inspired! But I know exactly what you mean.
I am surprised the better ones isn't Asian (it's a joke, just in case😅)
Well that's an overused joke
She's not just first chair... she's ALLL the chairs
This just made me feel like picking up the clarinet again. Haven’t touched it in like 5 years.
Seems to be a special providence! Maybe you were just waiting for that vid to pick it up again ;-)

How can ANYONE not like this awesome woman's talent and the music????
It´s the envy...
Don't know why I cried but that clarinet I felt that :)
Another sighting of music in it's natural habitat. It's bit illusive but when it doesn't feel threatened, boy it sound unbelievably good.
THEY SHOULD BE FAMOUS! I’m a clarinet player and she was playing that damn clarinet like she was performing for the whole world! I DAMN LOVE IT!!! KEEP IT UP! I hope someone famous sees this
Why does this make me cry?
me too!
Wow, I love this lady!
So, Louis Armstrong came back as a woman playing the clarinet. Got it. 🔥
🤣🤣🤣
😂😊
Watching Oct 1 2021 and it says this is 10 years ago
I hope that she is in good health and will play for years to come continuing to make people feel happy
And that she plays all over the world to spread her talent
Doreen is timeless...;-) I revisited her in 2015 to hear her again and made the same song request... I really do hope, she and her band are in good health today, without her, NOLA wouldn´t be the same...
IMPRESSIVE is just a very very short word. AMAZING is, aswell. Jaw Droping clarinet!!!
There are alot of good people out there, if we show more of them instead if all the bad ones alot of people will feel better, God bless these persons
I feel this woman could unite the World.
THIS WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE REMINDS ME THE FAB 20'S...
She breathed and blew out so much soul. I've never heard a clarinet sound so beautiful. Amazing raw talent.
Damn, imagine being this happy doing what you love with people you love.
I've listened to as many versions of this song as I can find, and I think this is probably one of the best arrangements and versions of this song. Doreen's clarinet playing and singing are phenomonal.
I agree with you a 100% in all what you said!!!
I think if I could visit New Orleans I'd have to have loads of cash to hand out to incredible talent such as this!
I could never make my clarinet sing like she does! Amazing! Beautiful!
Amen
Yep, I´d like that for my funeral as well...there is no song matching better for your last travel!
bucaneromax1
Thanks for the post.
The first time i heard this song was at Preservation Hall, january 1974, Sweet Emma Barrett singing and playing piano with all those great old cats. Great times, man, great times !
Nice to meet you. Bucaneromax1.
Fabio from Brazil!

Hi Fabio, sorry for the late answer!
Jesus blessed this beautiful soul. God will jndeed have the best choir and orchestra to give Him glory in Heaven.
Amen!
"LOUISE ARMSTRONG" she is a monster!!! wow!!!
IUSECAMERAS 😀😀😁
Every time I listen to this recoding I sob like an absolute baby, but yet here I am again.
Has anyone ever been that good at clarinet?!!!!?
I love Albert Nicholas, especially the recording which is called "Posledni Blues" But he died long time ago. But compared to the clarinet players today there´s is no one who is on the same street as Doreen Ketchens. My personal opinion.
I love how the kid is just there doing homework in the background. This is freakin' awesome.
I've never heard that instrument played like this! INCREDIBLE!!!
Play it Sister!!! Sing it Sister!!!
She plays that clarinet like it was in the crib with her. Breathtaking!!
I guess it was... ;-)
She's playing the hell out of that thing. Just incredible.
Doreen inspired me to start playing the clarinet back in March, now I can play along to most of her incredible music😁 she is such an inspiration!
GENIA!!!!!!! LOVELY DOREEN!
She accompanied the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in March, 2018. She was so humbled to have been invited and the Philharmonic was graced by her participation. (Not to mention, as usual she knocked it out of the park). Love Miss Doreen ❤️
Thanks for that interesting detail. Doreen´s talent would be a welcome addition to any orchestra!
You can look for they vídeo in YT...
Thank you Sister Doreen for reminding me that it is high time that I have that closer walk with my Jesus! God bless you all!
Doreen know she did that song proud. She and the band moved me to tears of joy.
When I was filming, I also had tears in my eyes!
God bless New Orleans , Jazz, and the muthafking Blues!!
