The Big Lez Show: The Hidden Genius of Australia's Most Beautiful Animation

  • This is my video explaining why The Big Lez Show was one of TH-cam’s most imaginative animated series ever released. And though it came out before TH-cam was the giant platform that it is today, it still managed to gather a large following at its inception.
    But why was this case?
    On the surface, The Big Lez Show looks like something you could easily overlook as nothing more than a show that includes childlike absurdity and bizarre misadventures. Even its basic Microsoft paint animation style reinforces this idea that it’s too simple and probably not worth your time.
    But below the surface, the show has more substance than you might think.

    What is The Big Lez Show?
    The Big Lez Show is an Australian comedy web series created by Jarrad Wright. The show originally premiered on TH-cam on 16 July 2012 and concluded on 26 January 2019.
    The show's protagonist is Big Lez, a humanoid alien living in the fictional town of Brown Town, Australia. The show follows the adventures of Lez, his friends and nemeses.
    Big Lez is a humanoid alien who was banished from his home world, the fictional planet of Kingdom Cum. Lez lives in Brown Town with his adoptive son Quinton and across the street from his brother Norton. Next door to Lez lives his friends Sassy and Donny, who are often the main instigators of their various misadventures. The show's content varies from drawing humour in mundane day-to-day activities between Lez and his friends to large, grand adventures where they take on the show's antagonists, the Choomahs.
    Initially uploaded on TH-cam, the show quickly gained great popularity and developed a cult following. The premiere of season 4 reached 1 million views within 2 months of being uploaded and the show became such a success that a five episode spin-off series entitled The Mike Nolan Show was commissioned by Comedy Central Australia. The show was produced by the same people in the same manner as the original series and premiered on 10 June 2016.
    The show has enjoyed vast popularity in its later years, with viewership soaring during season 3's release. As of July 2020, The Big Lez Show TH-cam channel has over 129 million views, with each episode averaging 1-2 million views.

    This vid is responsible for me finding the show and then falling in love with it and watching the entire series. I just want to say I am extremely grateful for finding this vid by random and its been a huge impact in my life. The show has opened up my mind beyond what I thought a show could and has changed my view points about life in so many ways. It has made me look at and experience life in a more respectful beautiful way than I ever thought before, and has inspired me to go on a self improvement/observing journey and enjoy the ride of it all. I don't know if I would have ever found out about the show if it wasn't for this video, so thank you so very very much man for publishing this vid. I wish the creator/creators of this vid, the team behind the Big Lez Show and everyone reading this comment loads of love and wish you all the best of luck in this crazy ride we call life < 3 👍✌❤

    so much fucking effort in every frame, Big Lez show is great because it is a show with heart. The characters seem completely believable and likeable. i was introduced to the big lez show in 2016. it was our buddy's birthday and we all ate mushrooms. Choomah Island 2 was released while we were in the middle of our trip, and the rest is history. it's the best show created to this date for a multitude of reasons, including the organic conversations and independent production. but the ultimate reason is how vividly it reflects one guy and his buddies' journey through life. you can literally see 7 years of life experience accumulating when you go through the series. you don't have to agree with the show's philosophy, but the fact that the window into the creators' lives is so clear even through the show's absurdities is a really powerful thing

    • @motioninart
      @motioninart  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      completely agree. when I was watching the documentary by jarrad wright, you can see how his experiences influenced the show. have you heard about his "enlightenment"/"awakening" moment? loved hearing how the show was close to you and the story of how you guys watched it

    • @9erik1
      @9erik1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@motioninart yeah he's talked about a number of his profound experiences, most of which i think i heard in his appearances on the Your Mate Tom podcast. i can't say i personally relate, although when i was in university for physics in 2009-2014, i had become acquainted or friends with a lot of more "pure" hippies who were into healing crystals, "energy", frequencies, vibrations, etc. watching the Choomah Island 2 mushroom trip (on mushrooms) was hilarious because even though jarrad seems to identify with a lot of what's being said there, he still seems open to the satirical/absurd aspect of it, which is a really respectable thing.
      if you wanna hear a really crazy story though, get this: in december 2014 i visited my friend's father, who i think has mild schizophrenia (he was admitted in 2012 after a psychotic episode). he told me a story about how he was outside at 445 am (yes, specific time) and saw a big blue orb slowly moving fluidly and silently along the sky. he tried to get his wife to come outside to see it, but she ignored him cause she was getting ready for work. i would have blown the story off, but then his wife (who is sane) told me that when she drove to work and parked her car, she saw the same thing. the guy drew me a really crude picture, and i was never able to reconcile the fact that she attested to his story. enter 2019, and Mike Nolan's Long Weekend is being released. in episode 3, nolan and crazy steve are outside the bar smoking a joint, and a big blue orb moves fluidly and silently along the sky. blew my fucking mind, i still can't get over it

    My sons introduced me to Big Lez, Sassy & the gang about 5-6 years ago and they are now adults and we still watch all of Jarrad’s episodes, they never ever get old. When he made the Sassy the Sasquatch series I was absolutely thrilled and I must say it is hands down one of the best things I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Anyone know if Jarrad is married? Coz I’d seriously marry this absolute genius of a man 💞💞💞 *Edit - my youngest son just informed me that we’ve been watching Jarrad’s work since 2015!!!

    I fucking love Big Lez. It's one of the few things I've seen that connect so deeply with me. I got real nostalgia for the days of smoking with my own mates. The best part is at first you think the show is kind of stupid, but then you realise how clever it all is and feel stupid yourself.
    There's no bullshit, it's not corporate or family friendly, and it's not polished. It's mass appeal is its humour and spontaneity and I heard of it through word of mouth. It's properly refreshing
