Given that this was on paytreon I have no idea where you are now, but I wondered if you had looked at all the work recording studios go through to build quiet spaces, especially using bookcases of Books to sound deaden spaces etc. I was thinking here of EytschPi42, SpectreSoundStudios, ProducelikeAPro etc Also have you looked at Tech Ingredients work on sound deadening as part of building an Anechoic Chamber also DIY Perks building cheap sound deadening batons?
dang mike is great at speaking. it surprises me how everyone on the team is not just skilled at their explicit jobs, but also at communicating information to the audience
@Jason Fitch yes, and I was pointing out that the entire crew is particularly good at it. Most everyone can write, for example, but only very few can write in a way that transfixes you on their content. The same goes for public speaking.
Love all the work you guys do. As an enthusiast trying to bring new people into building their own PC's, I am constantly sharing GN. Knowing the integrity you all have, and that it is not a judgemental place for people just starting out is amazing. Keep up the amazing work. I hope to one day see the new space since I only live a couple hours away.
I think this video is a great showcase of how GN could use more of their team members for presenting content. Steve has a ton of the workload when it comes to presenting content especially.
Just wanna shout out that, since rediscovering GN like 2 years ago, I haven't missed a single video release within 12 hours of it's publishing ever since. It's the only channel I've ever done that with; you guys and Hardware Unboxed completely reaffirmed my appreciation for tech journalism. Love everything that you guys do, and I'm super excited to even just see these extras around the office.
so impressed by the whole teams dedication to quality investigation and reporting! you guys were the first channel I watched when I got into PC building and you guys totally got me hooked on HW information overall! great work!!
You might want to consider acoustic drop seals for the doors so they seal the bottoms of the doors when closed. At Dolby Labs Theater in San Francisco they built it as a room within a room. The inner space is floated on neoprene to deaden vibrations from out side.
Howdy Mythos, Steve has Been to a Few of Anechoic Chambers, One at Logitech years ago in a Video 7-8 yrs ago & another in the past 3-ish years when He visited MSI HQ Semi - Anechohic Chamber where they test Cases, he also saw their EMI & Radiation labs too when he was in Taiwan that year. Steve is well aware of these and in the past said he wanted to Build one in the New Building but it can be 50k to build a good one for the Floor Steve wants to have at GN for testing .....some of the Chambers are well over 1 Million like the one Linus Visited a few years ago too....its suspended and has a 0db Sound Floor .....the one Steve wants to Build will be about 15db ish! Cow}:-o)
27 dB is actually pretty damn quiet, given that the dB scale is logarithmic and a 3 dB increase is a doubling in sound energy! A rule of thumb that i've heard often is a 10 dB increase in sound pressure is percieved as a doubling of volume for a human. Also of note, every 3 dB of sound pressure level increase demands a doubling of the electric power fed to a speaker! That might not sound like a lot, but BOY does the power demand escalate quickly when you want live venue type SPL!
Yup, sound can be very tricky to handle. This is also why it is really hard to isolate a room from external sounds. If even 0.01% of the sound energy from the room next door makes it through, it can easily swamp the silent room. (if the noisy room is at 60 dB, then at 0.01% it will leak in 20 dB worth of noise.) I know that some acoustic rooms are isolating themselves from walls, ceiling and sometimes even the floor of the surrounding building. Usually standing on dampened springs, while also having a fair bit of mass in and off themselves. (it is a similar story for optical work benches, but that is even more overkill.) And having worked with PA a fair bit, yes, it does consume a lot of power. Anyone who thinks a 1.2 kW stereo setup is "impressive" haven't worked with PA where a single speaker can consume that, and then one has 8-20 of them in a stack acting as one element. Though, PA speakers also put their amps inside of the speakers themselves, since the attenuation in the speaker wire itself would otherwise dissipate a fair bit of heat. since the wire resistance + the skin effect + peak currents of audio can result in quite a lot of loss, and even a bit of distortion since the skin effect isn't flat across the audio spectrum. Though, thankfully audio systems don't run at peak output power, they do temporarily pulse up to close to peak, but that is for a fraction of a second at a time, the average consumption second to second is usually a lot less than half, even if one plays a pure sine at peak amplitude. (unless one has class A amps, they do practically burn peak power all the time, but class AB and even D amps are good enough for PA.)
4:44 when turning all the ac units off on for example a hot day, you could cool the working rooms down a lot in anticipation of a noise test idk Unless there's testbenches there
Well, I am pretty sure Steve doesn't like bragging, nor do I like fanboy-ing.. but this channel is better than MKBHD + LTT + all other tech channels put together. Watching GN makes me realize how much more MKBHD or LTT could be doing with their resources but are not. Instead they have reached a plateau long time back and are just busy minting money by parroting their sponsor's lines instead of doing justice to their audience. Love the whole GN team. Would request Steve to give every member a bit more screen time. Already love Patrick and Stone, also liked Mike a lot. Such cool guys I would like to be friends with.
just wondering but where did you guys order the noise dampening mats from? Those seem handier than me placing crappy noise foam blocks(squares) all over my room
Those squares barely helps so you know because of how ridiculously thin they are. Get some rock wool instead. It's way cheaper and isolates noise extremely well. Just search for videos here on YT and you will see.
Those look like Audimute sheets. They're very heavy. The next step down is Producer's Choice sound blankets from Vocal Booth to Go. But even a $9 moving blanket will be better than those foam pieces you stick on the wall.
Just a heads up, 14dB is hard to get to, but possible with a lot of treatments. Will be expensive. Really want to build a decoupled floor/wall/room "floating" inside a room.
yeah, maybe some door sticky foam wrapped around the curtain frame under the bracket to isolate the curtain frame from building vibrations, eh, maybe. I'm probably rambling to the choir tho. it's understandable that not everyone can go staggered 2x4 wall construction, concrete slab so isolated raised floor isn't an option (not quite Seismic Isolation yet similar idea). Your not putting up with rocket sleds, jet engines, blast tubes, and 'stuff' outside, looks good for what your use is. B)
Would not squaring off the walls help some with diffusing the remaining sound in your booth? I know you have those 2 walls that you have to deal with, but I'm interested to know how turning the space into an irregular pentagon would affect the noise floor and any standing waves.

definitely :) and now he and stone won't have to murder each other!
I can’t talk so I think it’s impressive
@Jason Fitch always that one guy
Mike is out here looking like one of Ned Stark's sons. I name Mike, King in the North. More Mike content plz.

Glad to see some of the improvements and the team's perspective. Big upgrade from the bedroom in the house days 👍

Thank you for all your hard work there at GN we all appreciate it.
Andrew come in the room! haha Poor Andrew… I share your pain bro. Audio booth is extreme, who knew the lengths you guys go!
excited to see how this sound booth project comes along in the future
Before you know it, companies will be paying for GN Tested and Approved stickers on their products

I am so glad you have an additional channel! More content!!!!

or when you are pushing waves through an antenna into space, thats some fun stuff

F. Alton Evererst , The Master Handbook of Acoustics Vol. V. Everything you will ever need to know about audio.
Quality walkthru!
Aha, so old low-airflow cases can be repurposed as sound diffusers... Good tip.

It's not an audio booth, it's a FORT! Their what you call it when you hang up sheets and talk to imaginary friends like Dessey and Bell!

1:30 I did that when I was studying for board exams.
more. more pls
Where can I find those sound dampening mats that they have hanging up there?
What about the HVAC not being able to circulate with sealing up the doors?
Circulates fine since each room is isolated
Those arms... 😍🤣
😎🤙🦅
Ah, so the goal is to make it quiet enough you can actually hear the country slowly dying outside.
I approve.
You can hear that from anywhere, sadly.
Hi
Went to this channel and it says"this channel doesent have any content.. yet ive watched 2 videos here already?? :P yt is drunk.
wow how many time can you say pretty excited in a video? You average about 1 pretty every 80 seconds.
