@MindfulMotorcyclist I think the difference is bikers say, "You're not a proper biker..." And if someone says that to me, I'm more than happy to agree with them. What was it Groucho Marx said about not wanting to be part of any club that would have him as a member?
@@AlexOnABoatAgree. Always thought I was a motorcyclist not a biker. How would I, personally, narrow it down… I think more non riders dislike what I view as bikers, but would accept a motorcyclist. My interpretation has always been that someone who enjoys riding a motorcycle is a motorcyclist. A biker on the other hand is more to do with fashion and one’s persona, just like if you are a Mod or a Punk or a Hippie, bikers to me, wear traditional black leather, have long hair, tattoos and enjoy rock music, a biker follows a fashion trend, the rest of us (me included) who do not follow this trend but enjoy motorcycles are motorcyclists. That’s my take on it.

I have had a bike licence for 52 years, owned about 35 bikes and ridden over 100 different bikes. I was riding a Kawasaki Z1a at 21 and have had most of the big Kawasaki bikes and ridden all over Europe. Somehow, I managed all this at a modest pace and no need to prove myself. I now ride a Honda ADV350, which I love as much as any bike I have owned. I'm not a biker, I'm just a traveller who loves bikes.
You got me beat, licence 53 years, owned 21, ridden another 42, only owned motorcycles as personal transport, currently on a Triumph Bobber, plan to go on as long as possible. Just a bloke that loves motorbikes too. 🙂
My younger brother owns 4 Harleys (including my former bike, a 1200 Sportster Low!) and he does all his own servicing (he has a lift in the garage) except for tires (tyres?!). He is retired now and even helps his neighbors with their Harley servicing. HDs with hydraulic valve lash adjustment are easily maintained and he did my Sportster for me when I was visiting once and the next time I rode it out to Tucson Aridzona he bought it from me. As for what makes a real biker? Do you enjoy riding? If so, then yes. You are a genuine motorcyclist. I used to ride about 24,000 miles a year but age and illness/injuries have cut that waaaaaaaay back, LOL! I enjoy myself when I feel up to getting out and getting on my bike. It is ridiculous that this kind of willy waving competition exists I just enjoy being on two wheels and the places that takes me.
Excellent points. I’ve never liked being called a “biker”. To me anyone who refers to me as a biker doesn’t really understand what riding means. They see a biker riding around in a pirate costume with a group of other bikers and think I share that mindset. I’m on the other end of the spectrum. I dress in protective gear, ride a variety of bikes, wave at other riders (regardless of the brand of bike or scooter they ride), and don’t really care what “image” I project. I’m courteous to others, and try to leave a positive impression on non-riders. So, I’m clearly not a biker.

About 12 or so years ago I got off my brand new Triumph sprint GT at west Bay (first of the few rides I'd taken on it and triumph had a great offer of £500 of gear chucked into the deal so everything was shiny and brand new) then this hairy git in his biker gang atire comes over and says to me " ten grand and a sunny day don't make a biker mate" to which I replied "neither does a tattoo and a leather waistcoat" he went off a bit upset ... turns out he'd only passed his test a year ago as one of the group he was with who I kinda know quite well apologized on his behalf but also described him as a gobby little s**t ... First thing I was advised to do at age 15 was to save up for a Haynes Workshop manual and learn how to fix my FS1E !! 😊....and that was before I could even ride it legally! 😂
Great video. There are definitely a contingent out there that see a 'biker' as a particular stereotype separate from a motorcyclist. The concept of a biker being a burly guy on probably a cruiser, with leathers and denim, probably with patches.... As there is a contingent that see 'cyclists' as the lycra clad sports cycle riders as being separate from anybody else who rides a bicycle for any reason. Thankfully the english language has other ides .... Myself, After 40 years of bikes, I still don't consider myself a 'biker' I am just someone that rides a motorbike for enjoyment ... so i am probably a self indulgent, sybaritic amateur . . .
1) Must have attended at least three Bashing the Bishop rallys or similar. 2) Must have an old crashed sportsbike that is now a "streetfighter". 3) Must drink Newcastle Brown Ale. 4) Must NOT own waterproofs. 5) Must have a shiney VW based trike in the back of the shed. 6) Must have a terrorist beard. 7) Must "know" some lads from "the Angels".
Got it in one …. you do you, let the “experts” do what they do , I’ve little doubt they will have a much smaller circle to bore with their expertise.. a thought there is no point in bemoaning the demise of dealers if the attitude is DIY or hand back your keys
Who cares as long as you enjoy your riding . Its not what you ride its the ride thats important the camaraderie that is special to us two wheeled gents . Iv broke down many times and always a biker stops to see if you are alright dont get that in cars . Bikers are a great bread and it dos not matter if you ride a gsx1400 or a honda cub . To much snobbery now in the biking world
Anyone who swings a leg over a motorbike on a regular basis is a biker. Other criteria may add to one’s experience but it shouldn’t determine who is and isn’t a biker. There are those who ride specific brands and are posers and appear to define themselves as a cut above everyone else. HD and BMW instantly springing to mind. I ride all year round as I don’t own a car and consider myself as a motorcyclist. I don’t want to be defined by what, how or when I ride. Motorbikes are in my blood and have been for over 30+ years. I take an interest with everything with an engine between two wheels.
If miles make a biker, Fuzzy Biker in the US has put 14,300 miles on his Himalayan in a few weeks. No substitute for odometer reading when it comes to bragging rights.
Was getting a bit worried after point 3 😅thought what a crock of sh-t you was talking about. For me a biker was someone from the 80's and or before who wore black leather jackets, big boots and had to ride a bike,as they didn't want or own a car. Thats my definition of a biker. Motorcyclists are a more modern term for anyone who rides a bike, at any level. Anyone who rides a motorcycle (not scooter) is a Motorcyclist. And we don't need putting in boxes really, just enjoy the RIDE while you can.
You missed off the bit about riding your bike in all weathers. Failure to do so means removal of your stripes! 😂😂 Biking has changed in the 50+ years that I've been doing it, and not for the better, unfortunately. Bikes have improved, many "bikers" attitudes have deteriorated in that time. Maybe it's the anonymity of the internet that's behind it? In my younger days, the only way that you could criticise someone else's bike or ability was face-to-face at a bike meet or out on the road, which would probably have ended up with a smack in the mouth! But guys just didn’t do it. Maybe because of that, or maybe the comradery amongst motorcyclists was greater then? I don’t know.
Being a biker is when all your mates are bikers all your social life includes the above for decades sleeping in tents in fields or club houses and partying. Then as you get into the lifestyle joining a patch club being a prospect doing your time and finally being made a full member. Not being blackballed because all it takes is one full patch member to not want you in the club. And then you have that something that no money can buy. Unless you buy your Hog patch and be laughed at . Haha All of the above.
Hi Bob, glad you found it amusing, not my usual fare to do a tongue in cheek video but I'd had a few comments recently saying this and that to be a biker 😂
@@MindfulMotorcyclist @MindfulMotorcyclist I had guessed as much, don't take it to heart, if they don't like it they can switch to another channel. Personally I think, yourself, 2 Wheeled willy and Freddie Dobbs are a revelation, happy to talk about any current subject and find yourself suddenly in a minefield. You in particular picked up on a subject way back before anyone else mentioned because you see it as it is. I just wish people making blogs would stop saying "I would choose this or that or I don't like" the point is to just assess functionality for the everyday rider surely?
Its not what you ride, its how you ride! Sensible riders are the true motorcyclists boy racers are what give the motorcycle community a bad image. I came back into motorcycling in my early sixties after a brake of almost 40yrs and it wasn't for the speed and thrills it was for the camaraderie bikers share with their fellow riders something car driver's don't do!
If you were a real biker you'd have known to add this next point to your list. I'll tell you what, you're not a real proper biker unless you not only give your opinion on how others should ride their bikes, you need to be eager to respond to comments in an assertive manner to educate, inform but mostly insult (they obviously deserve it). :s
You missed Chicken strips so far over you graze the wheel nuts and you have to ride all year round even in a Hurricane, heated gear, no way you endure temperatures which would scare Eskimos🤣
Ironically amusing stuff. I'm afraid I had that 180mph conversation not that long ago with a guy a few years older than me, and I'm 65. I wasn't impressed, but then willy waving is rarely impressive. It's not what you ride, it's THAT you ride.
You missed one, riding a bike in all weathers all year round. To be honest, that has more clout than anything else. Are you a "proper biker" if you're a fair weather biker? If you're in the UK, that pretty much means you're not riding your bike hardly at all
You forgot rule 8 - you're not a proper biker until you've fallen off multiple times and broken bones, had to stay in hospital etc. 🤦♂ I did a four day trip to France this year with two "real" bikers (one has a big Harley and the other has a 1200GS) on my little Interceptor. I even filmed it. But I'm not a biker because I only did around 6-700 miles on the trip, not 500 per day, and I'm also not a proper "youtuber" because I only have a couple of hundred subscribers... 😂 You're dead right, all it takes is passion. If you love it, you're a biker/motorcyclist or whatever you want to call it - simple as that.
I can see Two wheeled Willie's sense of humour all over those 7 steps to becoming a proper biker. Apart from holding my licence for over 25 year's and owning a good few bikes in my time, i don't fit. Does anyone actually live in that place your filming from and i see the designer beard is going well.
Good question Ian, yes I think they actually do live there, but there was a hotel for each house lol. The beard is much more by accident than design I assure you? Has the Elim 500 arrived?! Exciting

Thankfully the english language has other ides .... Myself, After 40 years of bikes, I still don't consider myself a 'biker' I am just someone that rides a motorbike for enjoyment ... so i am probably a self indulgent, sybaritic amateur . . .
I've met a few like that in my time for sure.
The best ones are the opposite 👍
Cracking bit of satire there Sean 😊👍🏻
Thank you Dave, I decided to mix up the videos a bit :), plus I had no way to edit on the road!
@ good result pal….hope the trip goes well 👍🏻
@@thebingleywheeler Thank you very much! I hope you're doing well to!
I’m not a motorcyclist either. Just a tourist that goes by motorbike.
You're a biker if you ride a two wheeled motor vehicle and you are willing to go out on it in the rain.
Well said sir👏👏
Was getting a bit worried after point 3 😅thought what a crock of sh-t you was talking about. For me a biker was someone from the 80's and or before who wore black leather jackets, big boots and had to ride a bike,as they didn't want or own a car. Thats my definition of a biker. Motorcyclists are a more modern term for anyone who rides a bike, at any level. Anyone who rides a motorcycle (not scooter) is a Motorcyclist. And we don't need putting in boxes really, just enjoy the RIDE while you can.
Well said.
You missed off the bit about riding your bike in all weathers. Failure to do so means removal of your stripes! 😂😂
Biking has changed in the 50+ years that I've been doing it, and not for the better, unfortunately.
Love it…😀👍
Being a biker is when all your mates are bikers all your social life includes the above for decades sleeping in tents in fields or club houses and partying. Then as you get into the lifestyle joining a patch club being a prospect doing your time and finally being made a full member. Not being blackballed because all it takes is one full patch member to not want you in the club. And then you have that something that no money can buy. Unless you buy your Hog patch and be laughed at . Haha
All of the above.
😂😂😂👍👏
You meant ‘dyed in the wool’
Its not what you ride, its how you ride! Sensible riders are the true motorcyclists boy racers are what give the motorcycle community a bad image. I came back into motorcycling in my early sixties after a brake of almost 40yrs and it wasn't for the speed and thrills it was for the camaraderie bikers share with their fellow riders something car driver's don't do!
Amazingly I've experienced some of that camaraderie after starting this channel, that's a big reason I do it 👏👍
Three years and three small bikes. I’m not even a third of a real biker 😂
Well I always respond to my comments by thanking the person first so it can't be me. I wonder which channel this is 😂🤔😂
You must know the MVRIS code of each bike on the market 😂
You missed Chicken strips so far over you graze the wheel nuts and you have to ride all year round even in a Hurricane, heated gear, no way you endure temperatures which would scare Eskimos🤣
Chicken strips! That is a classic...
I like to think of myself as an improper motorcyclist 😆
I've got a nice leather jacket and a little yellow duck on my engine guard.
Can I join your gang?
Yellow duck means you lead the gang! 🐤🐤
Ironically amusing stuff. I'm afraid I had that 180mph conversation not that long ago with a guy a few years older than me, and I'm 65. I wasn't impressed, but then willy waving is rarely impressive. It's not what you ride, it's THAT you ride.
Wait till you find out your turntable is shite and that album is not a first pressing. T***s everywhere. Ride & enjoy! 😎
You missed one, riding a bike in all weathers all year round. To be honest, that has more clout than anything else. Are you a "proper biker" if you're a fair weather biker? If you're in the UK, that pretty much means you're not riding your bike hardly at all
I’ve been riding bikes since 1976 and have zero interest in track days! Am I not a biker lol 😂😂😂😂
Watch to the end, it's a joke 😊
20 bikes? I own 11 and it feels like too many.
Looks like a fail on just about everything for mois. As to getting the knee down, I saw Mike Hailwood at his peak and he NEVER got his knee down.
You forgot rule 8 - you're not a proper biker until you've fallen off multiple times and broken bones, had to stay in hospital etc. 🤦♂
I did a four day trip to France this year with two "real" bikers (one has a big Harley and the other has a 1200GS) on my little Interceptor. I even filmed it. But I'm not a biker because I only did around 6-700 miles on the trip, not 500 per day, and I'm also not a proper "youtuber" because I only have a couple of hundred subscribers... 😂
You're dead right, all it takes is passion. If you love it, you're a biker/motorcyclist or whatever you want to call it - simple as that.
Nice location
I can see Two wheeled Willie's sense of humour all over those 7 steps to becoming a proper biker. Apart from holding my licence for over 25 year's and owning a good few bikes in my time, i don't fit. Does anyone actually live in that place your filming from and i see the designer beard is going well.
Good question Ian, yes I think they actually do live there, but there was a hotel for each house lol. The beard is much more by accident than design I assure you? Has the Elim 500 arrived?! Exciting
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Yes just been out on it for a short ride, obviously totally different to the GoldStar being a twin, it's got the lightest clutch I've ever used, a superb gearbox, very comfortable but can't go over 50 as I'm running it in and scrubbing in the tires.
It's the passion. One hundred percent.
The image is incidental.
Amusing take on the testosterone fuelled element of the world of two wheels. Im pleased to confirm that after many decades on two wheels I'm still not a 'proper biker ' 😅
😂 I would never ride as fast as my grandma, she was a nutter.
Yes everyone forgets that Grandma's were young once!
@@MindfulMotorcyclist I took my Grandma out for her 80th birthday, I insisted she wore full leathers, and my uncle and my father craned her on to the back of my bike. She was screaming for me to go faster and faster, but I bottled it at 80mph, thinking of the weighty looks my family were giving me before we set off. When we got back, safely, she insinuated I was a softy, and told me about doing 140mph on a Vincent Blackshadow with a miniskirt for protection. She was wild. 😊
😂😂 very good 👍
Thanks Rick, not my normal format 😂
Oh dear. First one and bollocks already 😞EDIT: Oh, I see - satire.. 🤣🤣🤣
Hilarious 🤣
Nice t shirt
Also, if you haven't been to the TT races, you're not a biker🙂
I've failed again 😂, this test is looking worse than my Physics A level... 😂
😆
Well seed i have ridden bikes from 16, 100 cc still rides midd 50s all sises from 50 to 1300 cc still got my xj 900 from 86 now have a god time with my classic 350 22mod, all bikes has its charms if you enjoy your style of bike its fine do not care what others say the one niggle i have with serten you tubers about bikes is when they say this bike is soooo slooow only this HP to little they say they send out wrong signals to new bik riders to get a bike they cant handel that is not ok to power fulle bikes has nothig to do on publik roads in my opinion who neads 150 to 200+ HP to ride in traffic? this yare has bean not ok in my country a lott of riders kild in singel axidents all from 18 to 60 they go to fast fore theair skills i think influencers should not hype up speeding in videos they sould promout safe riding anny bike that doss the speed limits is fine dont use words like to slow on a 47 HP bike , super chanal you got ceap it up stay safe 🙂
🤣
Brilliant, but you're not a proper TH-camr until .... 😅😂
Until you constantly promote insta360 cameras and ask people to subscribe and like at the start of every video 😂
@MindfulMotorcyclist haha!!! Nailed it!! 😂😂😂😂
'Proper biker' ... absolute toss. Do you get out and enjoy riding a bike? If so, sweet, no need for any more analysis or (especially) judgement.
My man didn't get the memo on this one 😂🤦♂️
ah , -- that makes sense at the end ;;;; --- last wednesday we were at a bike meet and we started talking to a chap about his old jap 2 stroke , --- he loved the interaction ,, but i noticed his son [ maybe ] was on a beaten up learner bike next to him ,,, i could see he was getting a bit cheesed off that he was left out -- he did not moan or complain --- but looked frustrated ; ; i decided to talk about his bike to him- pointing out about facts that a noticed on the bike ,, his response was very positive and delighted to tell me all about his recent purchase ,, --- that made me happy and him happy ,, -- no showing off needed or big biker ballsh--t
That sounds nice Simon, good on you for involving the lad!
Broken down in June on the way home from holiday 4 hours waiting for recovery on a road heavily used by bikes. Many thanks to the 3 car drivers, 3 van drivers and 2 tractor drivers who stopped to check if I needed help. As for the 17 "bikers " who roard past without a glance, f**k you! Guess a 65 year old on a Royal Enfield isn't a real biker 😢
I thought it was April 1st for a moment. 😂 However,,,,,, there is a difference between a biker and a motorcyclist,,,,,,, discuss,,,,,,,,,🤔🏍️🛵🚁
I don't actually know the answer myself, I've called myself a motorcyclist online (obviously the channel name) but offline as well. I've tended not to use the term biker BUT someone has said to me in the comments 'You're obviously not a proper biker' whatever that means!? 😂
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Sorry, but your not a biker, you are a motorcyclist. All be it a young 1 🙂
@@MindfulMotorcyclist I think motorcyclist is factual / technical and biker is romantic / cultural. As in biker gang, compared to motorcycle rider.
So gents should I aspire to be a 'biker' or am I best being a Motorcyclist 🤔😊
@@MindfulMotorcyclist are you going to grow a “proper” beard, wear a warn out waistcoat, develop a beer belly, and post about how much a free individual you have become since joining your brothers who are your real family…..?
