  • I found this nice aluminum radiator from Australia and decided to give it a try :)
It is not a direct fitment for the 89-98, as it says it is for the 99-04, but works well with a few modifications.
Also saves a decent amount of weight. I should have measured, but the Aluminum is soooooo much lighter.
    Gates hoses I used:
    Gates 23037 (lower) amzn.to/3vw4Bz7
    Gates 22496 (upper) amzn.to/3i5jvt0
Gates 21517 (2nd radiator small hose (need to cut)) amzn.to/3vw4K5D
    1.0" to 1.0" Inch Hose Barb amzn.to/3VDklLi
    1" to 1.35" (25mm to 35mm) Straight Reducer amzn.to/3i5jSDU

The 1KZ engine needed more radiator to keep it cool than the 2L/3L/5L series it replaced. In the Hilux Surf Toyota made the radiator core 75mm (3") taller. In the Hiace where they didn't have space to increase the core footprint they added the auxiliary radiator. Some models even have a third radiator too. The main radiator alone won't keep your 1KZ motor cool in a Hiace, you need the second radiator as you found.
If you add your shroud back in you'll get better cooling again. A popular modification on these in Australia is to add the ten blade fan off one of the Prado models to the original fan clutch to pull even more air. Search for a pair of the proper upper & lower side straps that should be used with this radiator (original to the 98-04 models your aluminium radiator is designed to fit) and all your mounting points for the radiator, transmission cooler, & fan shroud will be there for you so you can do away with the zip ties and home made brackets.

I have read about it being related to space as well. Though an interesting thing I've found from a friend who imports these, is one of his imported hightop manual trans 1kz Hiaces came with a single radiator. It was factory setup and no hoses or anything related to a secondary radiator. So that had me perplexed as well.
I don't have the van anymore to play with different brackets, and the fan shroud was busted. But without the shroud it was cooling the same or better as before. Im guessing since its a smaller engine compartment anyway.
10 blade fan does seem like the easiest way to increase cooling though.

Hi, I appreciate all the videos you do on the hiace. In your work have you discovered the heater hose size up front where the hose connects to the heater controll valve? Im thinking it must be either 16mm (5/8”) or 18mm. I wont be using the toyota parts as they are impossible to find in the US. I will be making the repair with straight gates hose. I want to order all my parts before starting the disassembly as im 45 minutes away from the nearest parts store.

Thanks, sorry I don’t have a Hiace anymore. I remember ordering 5/8” hose to do something but never used it. Assuming most the smaller lines are that size going to all the heater system.

Has this improved the cooling ability for the engine? Reducing the high potential for overheating this vehicle has? In the warmer months that is.

I believe it has. Though just from my visual observance and not through any real measurement. It appeared to cool down quicker when the temp would rise from pushing it up hills.

Indeed. (Toyota Hiace Owners North America) is the main group I post in. No shop, just my garage in Gunnison, CO.

    What size wheels and tires

Why didn't you just use an original radiator and not have to modify this one.

    • @TheBroDojo
      @TheBroDojo  ปีที่แล้ว

Because better performance/cooling and it is a performance replacement for the Hiace of newer years that had the larger openings anyway.
*also a stock radiator was about the same cost 😬

Hey great video, I replaced the engine with 1JZ in my 1995 Hiace Super Custom because of severe overheating. Then had to do a head job. The culprit was a faulty radiator and the previous owner seems to have blocked off the secondary radiator. Could I replace the original radiator with that from a 4Runner?

Нихера не понял, зачем он хороший медный радиатор, поменял на фуфло алюминиевое с электро мотором.

Just translating your BS, but Aluminum is actually better overall. You can do some googling and see for yourself :)
The clutch fan has been reinstalled and was only testing the electric one to see what it could do.
