Peter, as others have mentioned, contact a local alternator & starter rebuilder. There’s 1 in San Francisco I’ve used for imported Hiaces we have worked on. Let me know if you want their info.
For the 2 alternator belts: these will work
    Masterpro 9395 (Oreilly’s)
    Napa 4L400
    Bando RAF3385

Peter, if it was Canada, there are a few RHD parts suppliers, if you have issues getting parts in the US...try looking in BC, Canada. They have lots ... i say again lots of RHD Japanese imports. U may have to wait for shipping but i think youll have better luck sourcing a part 😁

Agreed, the placement of the AC compressor above the alternator in a lot of Corolla engines too. It should be the other way around.

Peter, did O’Reilly’s not tell you what was wrong with the alternator? And is there not an auto-electric repair shop locally that could recondition it? The body casting may be unique to the hiace, but surely the diode pack etc must be shared with other models.

From what I hear, very few places rebuild alternators. Chinesium reigns supreme - and if one Chinesium unit is bad, they just swap it for another hunk of Chinesium.

The last time I called my local alternator rebuild shop they quoted me a new aftermarket alternator. Not economical for them to rebuild alternators anymore, with the exception of large commerical trucks (was my impression).

I saw this still parked at the shop outside in the background of the last video and though that's interesting you never kicked that one out. Thank you for making the content. If it bothers you I give you my blessing to send him to another Japanese or foreign motor specialist because it takes so much time away from you. Hopefully you are charging him at least a portion of your lost time. It's cute but you need to make the business decision to part with it. Unless you absolutely love the customer. I forget if he brings you other cars and does a lot of work. You have to weigh it. I don't like hearing your frustrations with this design, so to save your heartache let him know it's not possible to do easily. And itemize your shop time. If he isn't willing to pay for lost time let him know he can't work on this van anymore. Maybe he can find a fleet mechanic who works on cab over engine vehicles. :(

80s toyota van or you could do one from a 1994 previa too, looks the same
the top connector is in a different place and you'll have to change out the connector to the US style (but the wires will be the same). should be helpful for the future if it goes out again they can just swap in a US spec alternator.

Yes, we had a 2.4L Diesel Hiace in Australia same access, but no handbrake mounted like that one. The adjuster for A/C was behind a cover from underneath. The cool thing on ours was the horizontal condenser. Nippon Denso A/C are amazing at era when you tune the evaporator sensor so it cycles correctly.

Can you post vin number of the van

    • @LAactor
      @LAactor ปีที่แล้ว

It came by import from Japan. I thought the lookup system was down but I can't find one assigned to this unit. But any Vin for this Van would be not associated to the factory. It would be an assigned vin by the DMV and maybe you can tell me because I've never searched for parts by VIN that was assigned before.

Like we said, the greater the headache, the greater the content. But seriously, it would be wise for the owner to learn how to work on this vehicle himself lickity split. Especially if he plans on keeping it long term.

A failed rectifier diode inside it is probably all that is wrong with it. I used to change the little diode assembly on the GM cars I used to get second hand from my brother in law on a regular basis. Back in the 80's you could get them from the parts store for something like $15. Being that old, it probably doesn't have some printed circuit board that you can't repair, but you never know until you take it apart and look inside it. The owner might be able to find someone with enough electrical knowledge to take it apart & replace the failed part inside. He might want to change, or at least oil, the bearings too.
I wouldn't have worked on a vehicle built for use in Japan. But good luck.
