- Sammy Hagar performs "I Can't Drive 55" at Farm Aid concert, September 22, 1985, at Champaign, Illinois' Memorial Stadium. This is soon after it was announced that Sammy would be Van Halen's next singer. At the same show he also performed Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" with Eddie Van Halen on guitar. (See my other video: • 1985 Sammy Hagar & Edd... )
Holy hell does this song ever get a crowd going
I SAW THIS LIVE! I WAS THERE! This was TWELVE hours into the concert! We were exhausted ,but we STILL went NUTS for Sammy!
Great Video!! thanks for sharing this. That red-VOA Dean was SUCH a COOL guitar!! I always liked his HSAS days with Neil Schon.
LMAO! I was THERE and heard and saw all this LIVE! AWESOME!
I've seen every form of Sammy from Montrose to solo, to VanHagar to Chickenfoot and he kicks some major ass no matter where, how or with who
I was a paramedic at this event and was stationed right off the stage. I got ton's of autographs. Sammy was very nice and signed a couple things for me. Eddie was trashed as usual. Tom Petty was so wasted at this concert he fell over his mic stand. It rained most of the day but Sammy got the crowd going
That’s cool! He was at my neighborhood beach promoting his seltzer cocktails. I got lots of pics and got his autograph
Loved the unison in the crowd for 55
SAMMY SAID DAM RIGHT IM HERE TO HELP GOOD FOLKS R GOOD FOLKS
I am SSSOOOOO glad my mom got me into listening to Sammy.
He is AWESOME!!!!
This song should seriously have been in one of the Fast And Furious movies, I must say.
Dave and Howard wouldn't know talent if it bit hit them in the face.
Do they have a name besides "...And The Sammy Hagar Band?" I bet he dropped them like led bricks soon after this.
could not agree more Dukabor, have seen them both live and Sammy always connects with the audience. Plus Sammy is a real musician, has tons of respect while Dave (great showman, yes) does not have that same respect from musios and fans.
You think singing 4 gigs in a row is bad? Try being the cscreamer in a hardcore band. After just one night you can't speak properly the next day. But it's worth it for the fun of being on stage!
Too bad this vid cut out Sammys intro speech to it. He said "Here's one for all you tractor pullin' motherf*ckers!", then the song kicks in. I was board op'ing at a radio station carrying this live that day (1st Farm Aid) and 'bout fell outta my chair laughing. The General Manager stormed into the studio and said "did he say what I thought he did?" I replied "you bet your sweet f*ckin farm ass he did".
I love how Farm Aid begs regular people for money to help out the poor farmers in America...Do you know how much government assistance farmers get these days?? Every farmer in my area is rich as fuck. They get brand new personal vehicles every 2 or 3 years, they are able to build 2000 sq. ft. buildings so they can "store equipment", but most of them just turn it into a huge greenhouse for growing and selling marijuana. Farm Aid can suck nuts.
@MASTEROFASSWIPE Hagar may be no slouch, BUT HE IS NO EDDIE VAN HALEN...EDDIE VAN HALEN CHANGED THE ENTIRE FACE OF ROCK MUSIC...From Hendrix-Influenced with some Eric Clapton thrown in...to the fucking 1980s!!! & Sammy Plays like he learned FROM EDDIE...That's like comparing Elvis Pressley to James Burton...
It's cool that this show happened, but what was the point of "Farmaid"? Every farmer I know gets so many government subsidies they don't know what to do with it. There's one that lives out by my parent's, he has an Olympic sized indoor swimming pool, a 2400 sq. ft. workshop and a Porsche. Yes, please donate to the poor farmers...
Seriously though!WTF were you all smoking(or was snorting??) back in the '80's??Head Bands??Shoulder Pads in Jackets??Leg warmers??LMAO SERIOUSLY!!!
i was there too it's my home town!willie bring it back here please!hack says hi he's my boss1hey folks its every
truckers song lol!;-)it started here 1.just rember folks passing side the left.suicides the right side!
@IMaDEM0N & as a Follow-Up, if anybody remembers what happened in Van-Hagar, Eddie went to the Keyboard alternatively...go listen to the song Jump by Van Halen, that's a perfect example....
whats interesting is that alot of so called modern country is starting to sound like this....you know its pretty much rocked out with almost a sammy type voice they just add more of the country accent
Little known fact, this song was actually about the Hyundai Excel. It really couldn't drive 55.
@lifeonmars.........you lost the argument so quit tryin' to be the victor. Your prime goal in life is to win a youtube argument and you could not even succeed at that.
LOL he said Illinois, with an "s" sound on the end, that shit always cracks me up when people say it that way, and when they do, you KNOW they aren't from IL
If Howard said he's mediocre he needs his head examined!!! Sammy should have stayed with Gary. But don't forget about Bill the ELECTRIC Church.Great Bass player!
Kind of ironic to see Eddie and Sammy at the beginning of the video seeing that Sammy took Dave's place at the helm of Van Halen the very next year
Wow I better not listen to that on the radio in my 99 GT Mustang. I might get carried away. I think I could easily do 130 mph listening to that one.
I was going to say the same as "vip3rxhardy" but he doesn't sing the "fifty five" part, still looking for the one video where he sing that part
Thats Gary Phil was w/Sammy a long time and did a stint with Boston too. Great player and a good singer too!
Great song!! There is talk of bringing back the 55 speed limit. It didn't work for Jimmy Carter, it won't help now..Good show Sammy!!
i just learned about him today on one of my radio stations, He's good!!!
I seen him yesterday at my nearby beach. I got his autograph and lots of pics. He dropped off a Ck for surfers charity and promoted his new seltzer cocktails
Cool. Is it just me or is that the lamest bass on the face of the earth?
@hemmee Check out Sammy's new band Chickenfoot. They rock. Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Chad Smith and Michael Anthony.
Your soooooo right Sammy. He is a American gitar hero. He made us forget D.L.Roth sad departure from Van Halen.
at 53 seconds...the guitar in the background....Jackson SL-2 with a custom Nebula finish. I own the same guitar!
this is like my theme song. i realy can't drive 55. i can drive 35 and 45 and even 54, but fifty five no can do;).
@obeseotters -- actually the first Farm Aid had several rock acts there. Its a myth that it was all Country.
everyone always puts down hagar, but youve gotta give it up to him the man has confidence and talent to boot..
some one posted a comment saying this guy was better than SRV, i've had a look and im disappointed......
@sammylane21--as opposed to saggy pants, sideways hats, and flashing gang signs???
I live in Germany and i CAN drive 55 (if i want to...), - but thank god there's no need to...! ;-)
@obeseotters This is probably in the top 3 best known songs in history to be honest.
if this song doesn't get your blood pumping, you are either dead or suck really bad
@youngmindedman If you like this...check out Bad Motor scooter by Montrose...Awesome band!
sammy pwns but i still think david lee roth was better he had better hits with van halen
Bill Church bass!!!!!!! Chuck Ruff drums ok but no Denny C.
Gary"stiff" Phil guitar.
Wow, Eddie Van halen looks great!! So does sammy, sammy still looks good, sorry eddie
sammy can do songs just as good as on the album versions or better, DLR never did
Eddie is like the best of all rocker's i like Sammy to but Eddie rocks
Too much of that tequila crap can do that to you...
@WRINGORAINTREE
I bet you can do more than 120. My V6 G8 can do 130+.
Sure Officer, I did see the speed limit sign. But I didn´t see YOU!
thanks i forgot i looked him up and he is doing good for him self
Who said Eddie's sober? Didn't you hear about the canceled tour dates in March because he had to be put back in rehab?
I get the impression Sammy is very happy with his life and surrounds himself with good people. He doesn't need Van Halen to bring him fulfillment.
drummers best i ever saw was ronny tutt of the tcb elvis's band
"you bet your sweet f*ckin farm ass he did". LMAO I luv it.
22 years of partying like a rock star will do that to anybody
Those of us who followed the band throughout their career know that that is absolutely true. Based upon interviews from the time, Eddie, Al and Mike were much happier having Sammy in the band than Dave. They felt Sammy was a much more comfortable fit for them musically as well as personally.
Sammy - Dave, but Vanhalens just generally better with Dave.
Sammy Hagar is the best thing that happend to Van Halen.
it's a steinberger, they don't have tuners at the head
I agree with you. But they are all family. Joint was here.
I made this sticker that Sammy has on his guitar !!!
People first Criticize you and then they love's you.
They're with him now in Cabo, right?
@RolllTide *cough*or download time's worth*cough*
Cool vid. Who's backing Sammy?
Que bosta no Brasil tem melhor....... kkkkkkkkkkk
idk wat yall say hagar was as good as dlr
This song is dedicated to Michael Waltrip
Miss the old band. SAMMY IS THE KING!!!
Back to the future 2, BIFF'S PARADISE!
oh, yeah, "55", nvm my comment :p srry
I once got a 'speeding' ticket for going 32 in a 25 mph zone. I told the cop 'I can't drive 25'.. he was not amused--but I was haha
Hey Eddie Van Halen's there!
=D!
sad but i always thought it was 65 :(
No angry people allowd. liked or not.
Sammy rules!!! rock on my brother.
On this day in 1921 {September 10th} near Berlin, Germany the Ayus Autobahn highway was opened to traffic.
The highway's outstanding feature was its nonexistent speed limit...
And 83 years later Sammy Hagar released the album 'VOA'; the first track on the LP was "I Can't Drive 55".
The song peaked at #26 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 Singles chart.
'VOA' stands for Voice of America & was Sammy's last solo album before joining Van Halen...
Mr. Hagar will celebrate his 66th birthday on October 13th.
I think it was a slow one... ;-)
who was Sammy's lead guitarist?
XD! Yes!
LIVE in 85! fockin right
Yay! I am from Champaign, IL and this came out the year I was born!!! I have heard about this my whole life, now I am watching it! SUPA' LIKE
