- What are the best towns in Wales? We do not get to hear a lot about cities and towns in Wales, not as much as we do about those in England and Scotland. However, whenever the towns to live in the UK are ranked, Welsh towns find their way in. That inevitably reveals the best places to live in Wales. Sorting through the ranking, we are able to isolate the 12 best towns to live in Wales. Please bear in mind that our ranking relies to a large extent, but not entirely, on the most recent ranking of towns in Britain in the marketing report by the property finder company, Garrington’s. Factors considered are employment, green spaces, physical environment, quality of living, and architecture or heritage.
12. Narberth, Pembrokeshire
Just two years ago, Narberth was among the 8 Welsh villages and towns named the best places to live in the UK. It actually tops that ranking. Two years later, things are only getting better. A reputable online mortgage broker gives the town's average property price as 164,950 pounds. You can’t rush through your shopping in this beautiful small town. There are a lot of good and uncommon things to be bought and at reasonable prices there. On the high streets of this town are antique shops, vintage and craft outlets, award-winning cafes, delicatessens featuring local produce, restaurants and pubs among others. It also has a museum and romantic castle ruins. It has very good schools and great transport links.
11. Usk, Monmouthshire
Usk, a town and community in Monmouthshire, stands out in Wales. This town located 16 kilometers northeast of Newport is on the River Usk and is spanned by an arched stone bridge toward the western entrance to the town. This is a town with well-designed homes and bursting with community spirit.
We perfectly agree with the Sunday Times’ expert judges ranking Usk among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. Truly, on a more important note, a look at the air quality, school standards, broadband speed, and transport in this town will necessitate its inclusion here. It also ranks so well for green spaces, community culture, and the health of the attractive high street.
10. Glanaman, Carmarthenshire
Glanaman is another town with an overall high rank among the best towns to live in Wales. Out of 1372 places ranked in the United Kingdom, it ranks 71st. In the same ranking, we find it in the second position for natural beauty. For the quality of life rank, it holds the 200th position while its architectural beauty places it in the 796th position. As for green rank, it finds a place in number 555.
This town has a strong historical link to the ancient coal mining industry. Sited in the valley of the River Amman, Glanaman’s average family home cost is less than 350,000 pounds.
9. Blaenavon, Torfaen
Blaenavon, a town in Torfaen, is another Welsh town steeped in history. It was at one point the world giant among the important producers of iron, coal, and steel.
On the quality of life, it was the 69th best place to live in the UK while for natural beauty, it’s in the enviable third position. It’s also in the impressive 7th position for architectural beauty. The average family home costs less than 350,000 pounds. It would have ranked higher on this list but for its poor ranking for green space.
8. Brecon, Powys
Brecon in Powys, another market town, is also among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. The town is reputable for its annual scintillating jazz festival and its gorgeous cathedral is situated just within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Awful mispronouncing of Welsh names here. One quick phone call to a Welsh person would have given him the correct pronunciations. Lazy and disrespectful to an entire nation. But hardly a surprise. It happens on mainstream news channels all the time and radio is even worse. Still, we have only been neighbours for centuries. Torfeeun, fgs.
I’ve been to Llanaber but I’ve never heard of Lanabear and I’ve lived in Barmouth. The other two place names you mentioned in this segment I couldn’t even understand what you said it was that bad.
I am very surprised that Llandudno not appear in this list. I am not a resident of the town instead live in Lancashire.

I went to school in Tenby when my family lived in Amroth, which is a few miles along the coastline and not far from Narberth 😊 It truly is a beautiful place. It's a shame i didn't much appreciate that as a child.

You never look at machynlleth Powys it's a lovely place to live and it's close to Aberystwyth and also Newtown which has good shops so recognize these sometime

Yeah, nothing there, one road in one road out with big church in the middle an its full of outsiders who try big it up than what it actually is ,an i know im from not that far away,, local shop for local people 😉 know what i mean. @@davidjohnfarrell4579 😂😂 yeah i can believe that, many years ago i worked fir the waterboard down there,we used to call at this shop in a place called mathry, it was run by 2 elderly sisters, an i mean they mustve been in there 80’s then, they sold absolutely everything, in the window there’d be oilskin waterproofs next to kitkats from the 1960’s 😂😂😂, they knew everyone and everything, so as we werent from that area we’d ask where such n such lived, ( no sat navs) and theyd be useless any way , no network coverage, we’d say we have work there to do , they’d tell us exactly where they lived,, couple of days later we’d be back asking where our next customer lived, they’d ask the same question everytime, what do you want with them?, honest it was like ground hog day😂😂😂, the shops mo longer there now, the 2 elderly ladies are probably long gone,love em,, but i saw a programme on itv about them, they were quite famous, if they didnt have what you wanted they could get it, apparently this person asked for an elephant foot umbrella stand for what i think was a joke, few months went by when the supposed customer was stopped in the village by one of the sisters and said your parcel has arrived. It was the elephant foot umbrella stand, and this was in the day where this was no internet ,no amazon, they mustve had some good contacts let me tell you, dont get me wrong its beautiful down there, and parts are still pretty much wild untouched nature, thats what i miss living down there, i could walk the coastal path an not see a single person all day. But im in the city now, in the mix as they say, whitesands is lovely .

Llangollen = Chlangochlen, Portmadog = Portmaddock, (emphasis on the "A") Kidwelly = Kidwechli. Surprisingly, you got Llanelli right!
What? I've never heard Kidwelly pronounced like that. That's the English version. In Welsh it's Cydweli. One L.

You really need to learn how to pronounce Welsh words/place names.
The letters/letter groupings are assigned different sounds to English.
Nobody would have the faintest idea what you're talking about.
Carmarthen, Ceredigion. Why would you pronounce Camarthen correctly and then say Seredigion. Makes no sense.
I live in a place called station road In Llanelli but have a mate that lives in Kidwelly and am always surprised when I go there seeing what it's like

Whoever compiled this list has no idea! How can you miss places such as Llandudno, Conwy and Criccieth? To name just a few. I have lived in Wales for over twenty five years and would have no desire to live in any town on your list!

Surely this is just an English, not very bright, teenager (more likely more than one) having some fun, Probably comes from a suburb of English capital, London (to be pronounced with both syllables rhyming with the Christian name "Don"), such as the beautiful Wally-ing-ton (spelling shortened to Wallington). Is the Aldi building there in Wally-ing-ton as stunning architecturally as the one shown as one of the beauties of Wales? Not sure I can stomach the "12 Best Towns to Live in" England, Scotland, Ireland and France but may take a look, for fun, sometime.

What lanaguage use?
In the South Wales valleys and East Wales, English, almost no Welsh spoken.
North and West Wales, bilingual. Sometimes hostile to the English.

Next time you have someone introduce welsh towns at least have someone with a little bit of a welsh background or have done a bit of research an not someone who narrates like a robot.
Worst pronunciation I've ever heard. What about villages like Yscafiog, Caerwys, Northop, the list is endless, why doesn't he do some proper research and give people some reliable information. Should be taken down for disinformation.

Judging by the comments below their favourite hobby is complaining about bad pronounciation.
Where do live butty? Loondon, Hearford, glowsester, Brystole, Reeding, Nunayton? If we can learn English pronunciation, then surely the lazy English can do likewise. It shows a lack of respect. Still, we have only been neighbours for centuries, so maybe the slow-witted English need a bit more time.
Jacques - I can indeed recommend a Welsh town where you won't find any Welsh people, it's called Milford Haven, why not go there and tell me how lovely it is without all those complaining Welsh people.
