Appreciate the support as always guys and gals, feel free to leave a comment - I read all of them! - and have yourselves an awesome day, thanks for being here.
How did you obtain in depth statistics with types of crime to verify this information - Ely, Tremorfa, Llanrumney, Grangetown for instance have had greater problems than say Cathays !
Police.uk publish the crime stats, there are also some sites I use that summarise that data to make it easier to read. I also use the published Census data. The published data only tells part the story though. A lot of high crime areas have a lot of unreported crimes, some areas have a lot of shoplifting in the stats, etc,
@@ukexplored I think the issue is that parts of the city centre are categorised as Cathays, so the levels of shoplifting, violent and alcohol related crime would be relative to any major city in the UK. As previously said, there are far worse areas in Cardiff. Enjoyed the video though, even if your first couple of pronunciations made me cringe a bit 😂 Caerau is pronounced “kai-ruh” and Ely “ee-lee”, like the place in Cambridgeshire
I'm from adamsdown, the third most dangerous neighbourhood in Cardiff, and I can verify it is very sketchy. In fact, my own barber just got arrested for selling drugs.. I've been his customer for 6 years. I had no idea he was a barber 👀
You probably didnt notice it, trying to run a straight line and keep an eye on the fool that's shaving your neck is always a bit tricky right ? "I'm Messing around obviously, peace and love to you brother ".
File and Rank lads this is Cymru i know you city Lads are only loyal to your own pocket but im in charge because many men have had an oppertunity to lead only to serve them selfs thats why im le boss no playing up your all welsh community is what we want to see
agreed k-ra being the slang for it... its actually care-eye as it would sound, alot of resident are starting to use it proper name more and more, and cathayes is pretty much how you see it cat-hayes said in 1 go lol... you cant get a house in ely or caerau for that money lol unless its a garden shed... some of the shops you covered for riverside are in canton, but overall a enjoyable vid, and the super funny part was the fact that agreed city rd cathays and such is student city where those from england, scotland and ireland and welsh too come to get a 1st class education... lol so im thinking the crime rate is indeed very high but not from genuine cathays folks
@ministryoflies1344 It's just a very busy area, and people pass through it on the way to the city centre. Plus, students can be noisy and dirty. It's often landlords who dump the rubbish they leave behind. They should come and clear their properties the day before bin day.
Cardiff born and bred at 62yrs old ,there has always been shit hole areas,I lived in Splott in the 70s, and our houses were ready to be demolished,no hot water, tin bath ,outside toilet, kids left to run the streets, drunken parents, DV. I grew up on the council estates and times were hard, nothing has changed by the looks..ive worked hard and moved out bought a house, but I'll never forget my roots. There is no need to be dirty and trash your environment.
As a current resident of Splott it’s actually decent here now with mostly families and a tight community spirit. The surrounding areas have declined so much more.
I'm currently located in splott. It's really not that bad. We have had issues with bins, but the real problems seem to be all around us. I walk my dogs at midnight every night with no issue.
Thank you you made such a good point, “ nothing has changed “ And that it tragic for the families who live there ! I lived in what was recorded as the worst area in the U.K. for 4 years - it’s been trampled to the ground now - but the community despite the poverty somehow struggled through and still managed to look out for each other - the councils make decisions to invest or not invest in areas- The Angel Islington where I was born was the biggest 💩 hole ever when I was a child, my mother had 8 flights of stairs to navigate up to our damp 2 bed flat to the to the outside loo and only hot water tap in the house 1 bathroom. The council invested by building a prison camp on St Paul’s Road , piled everyone there on top of each other , whist selling off the stock of the houses that simply needed renovation- now you couldn’t rent a room in that area under 700 a week? Houses worth millions- the decision makers either have very little insight or are part of a very lucrative back hand gravy train!
Grew up in Splott, born in 75, my family's always lived there, grandparents originally lived on Portmanmoor Rd. I remember the tin baths, and tŷ bach, coal bunker out the back. Loved growing up in Splott, though. Our park had a train 😂 Jesse. It's always had a reputation for being rough, but not crime, car crime in the 90s, drugs like crack and heroin ruined all these places. I'm in Roath now, literally 2 mins away from Cliffton st, and City Rd, 2 hostels (ymca) we get all the junkies passing through, needless get left everywhere.
I lived in Cardiff in 1980/1981 on Cowbridge Road East, Canton. Back then I thought Canton was a bit "rough" around the gills although was informed by others that the areas around the old docks were worse (since gentrfield/redeveloped). I was an education student at the University and did my teacher training at Bettws in Newport (also a somewhat unusual area). I also taught for a week in St. Mellons Primary. Back then it was a leafy, pretty suburb and for some reason today has turned into a den of iniquity. I can hardly believe it! During my year the only problem I had was on Newport Rd. in an area called Splott(lands) when I was grabbed around the throat but managed to escape and run down into the centre of Cardiff. I did not know at the time that it was a dangerous area and attended a "ban the nuclear bomb" event there. And the Cathays area around the University both on Senghenydd Road and in the Cathays Gardens area in front of the university and other large buildings did not seem bad at all. Over the years something dramatic seems to have happened to the city.
Sorry another born & bred Cardiffian. I identify as a Cardiffian before anything else. All towns have areas that need some TLC. If I may suggest adding some comments about description of the kindness, friendliness & humour of our citizens. I’ve been blessed to travel all over the world, I still think Cardiff is the best. Gorgeous parks, gorgeous food, gorgeous culture, gorgeous people. Loudest & most passionate audiences And the best music scene in the UK (which is a VERY bold statement!) Come back & enjoy some! Wishing you much peace 🏴🏴🏴
Cathays is way nicer than those other areas. You didn't go to Splott or Grangetown. Can tell this was put together by someone who doesn't live in Cardiff.
Your house pricing in Riverside is likely skewed by the area set you had as Pontcanna is one of the richest areas in all of Cardiff. You’d struggle to find any crime there.
Apart from the muslim woman who killed and then burned her own son's body because he couldn't recite the Koran properly, yeah not much crime there at all.
I'm 50/50 on this here. My sister lives there and I don't think she's ever felt unsafe, there's some dickheads who let off fireworks in the daytime and a bunch of yobs who cover their faces and ride ebikes around (2 of these people died in ely causing the riots last year). But overall it isnt the worst place I've been too. That said, there was a day where we found a large knife in my sisters hedge...got the police to collect that
@@JamesMartinlfcEly is very neglected. Plymouth Woods is overgrown even at the entrance. It's time to ban the sale of fireworks to the general public.
I've lived in Ely (not Eli) all my life and it's nothing like how it's perceived here. It has it's moments but what area doesn't? Ely is actually a pretty quiet area for the most part and has a great community spirit. The house prices you listed are just wishful thinking, a small 2 bed house in Ely is around £160k onwards, not £100k and you definitely arent getting anything for £40k. Alot of misinformation in this video just on Ely alone. Just something to point out with the bulky furniture outside, usually its like that because its council collection day and they require it to be outside to be collected. Most often than not you don't see bulky furniture in the streets like that.
I've been in far dodgier and more dangerous places than those... Never felt unsafe in Cathays or Ely, for example.. It's all about attitude. Don't go acting the knob and antagonising people and it's all good. Most people are just stuck in an unfortunate situation with regards to poverty and prospects and just want to get on with it the same as the rest of us.
When did you record this video? If the video was taken around July, it’s likely to show beds and garbage in the streets. This is because Cathays is a predominantly student area where students move out during the summer and houses get refitted during this time. (Something the council needs to address with the ever increasing landlords). This also adds to the persistent issue of rubbish and rats on the streets, it is clear that the council needs to address this ongoing problem. The council has consistently failed to manage this issue effectively. Many people from outside believe this is a social problem but areas like Cathays are student areas-the students leave so it becomes almost a ghost town. The council can mitigate this easily, either by increasing resources or implementing better waste management strategies. As someone born and raised in this area, it hurts to hear people speak negatively about my birthplace. But if you ask anyone People of Cardiff are the most friendliest in the UK.
People don't want to live in Cathays and Roath near students because of the noise they make, though the streets nearer to Wellfield Road and Roath Park tend to be more where families and couples live. A lot of people moved away as they could sell their home to a landlord for much more than they bought it for and buy a slightly bigger house in North Cardiff where there is more space. There are a lot of ex students living in Cathays too and people who grew up in the area. I was surprised it was the worst area of Cardiff to live. I thought that would be Ely. The buses to Cowbridge had to be rerouted so they wouldn't go along Cowbridge Road West which goes through both Ely and Caerau. One one side is Ely and on the other side is Caerau.
I'm Cardiff born and bred and posted last Sunday on Facebook & Twitter how embarrassed I am at the state of the City centre & also Cardiff generally. The video sums it up. Cardiff is run mainly by a bunch of stuck up former university students who migrated here for political careers through the Labour Party. Basic services are run badly whilst they play politics. Most people don't vote and you see the results. Propel is a new political party set up to challenge Labour domination here. Support Propel for a change.
Look drip if your gonna do a clip on card make sure you pronounced the names of the are properly, and further more Canton is not in Riverside or pontcanna 😡
I have lived in Cardiff all my life I thought we had a little problem with letter and rubbish on the streets. The places in the video (not places I ever go thankfully) are disgusting. Our council waste so much money on things we don't need and it shows too many people don't care about there neighborhood. Feel sorry for the good people who live in those areas
What like pride flags painted on pelican crossings and woke inclusion and diversity schemes, that doesn't include the majority of people who are also in need of help, surely not....
I blame the council for it. They removed the full sized black bins and replaced them with the slim bins you only used to see outside HMOs. They now charge for taking away of large items such as mattresses, bed bases, fridges, and cookers. When I buy a new mattress or fridge, I ask if the removal of the old one is included in the price. It's not only individuals fly tipping but house clearance firms as well.
I was student in Cardiff 17 years ago & was very proud to call it my home & felt very safe there. How things change. Cathays was indeed a dense student area- but, it was never this bad. Students would always have the usual activities, like being drunk, messing with cars, littering, etc (student collateral damage) - but it seems, like most of the UK, many area have been degraded to some extent! Especially those that were affordable, now having more unsavoury/ uncivilised elements moving in.
The littering and general obnoxiousness in Cathays was always a huge issue, an probably still is. Way before ‘unsavoury/uncivilised’ moved in as you put it. Those anti social behaviours were from students, but I guess that’s ok as said people were from affluent backgrounds!
I was a student in Cathays 20 years ago and still live in Cardiff. Cathays is the same as it's always been. I wouldn't live there now I have a family but the main issues are with students, not 'unsavoury' people whatever they are.
I live in caerau and have all my life, it is not dangerous. As for the highfields, no one has knifes, its not a bad pub. Everyone in there look out for each other, same as the residents as for the rubbish most areas are not collected on the days they should be. But it doesn't matter where you go, there will always be an area that you will not like. Don't judge a book by its cover. And don't always believe what you read on google.
Most of the people who live in caerau are decent, hardworking and law abiding residents, who look after their homes. It’s the minority of would be gangsters who spoil it for everyone, and antisocial kids who are left to drag themselves up who only aspire to dealing drugs and crime, as that’s what they see normalised around them. The council under labour have done nothing for the area, all youth amenities have been closed down a long time ago. There is a problem with littering, fly tipping etc which has definitely got worse since the council reduced rubbish collections. It’s easy to generalise and stigmatise an already rundown and depressed area without knowing the reasons behind it all, these are still people’s homes who may have no choice in where they live but are trying their hardest.
ill never understand people allowing filth to pile up outside their front doors,it makes you wonder what the inside of the houses look like.another great video, hope your coming up to scotland.
Riverside is run down though. Grangetown is even worse. It is the most litter strewn. I knew someone living there who told me that neighbours put their bins out on any day despite notices everywhere informing people when bin day is. I have seen litter louts there throw their rubbish onto the pavement when their bus comes even though there is a litter bin nearby. Litter bins all over the city fill up quickly as the new black bins aren't large enough for two weeks of general waste.
Grangetown was my home town, but my parents could see how things were going, and moved when houses started to become mainly flats and bedsits, due to its proximity to the city centre and the docks.
Grew up in Ely and yes there is social problems there but most Ely folk are decent. Lived in Cathays and loved the area apart from the litter. Llanedeyrn, St Mellons, Llanrumney are far worse than Cathays. Butetown is the most dangerous place after dark if you're an outsider.
Yeah the Reddit community living in Cardiff say the same, those areas might be worse - the recorded stats only tell part of the story, but it's good to go with the data.
Butetown can be sketchy after dark but that's everywhere in the world as long as you aren't being stupid you'll be safe the majority of the butetown community is lovely
@@ukexploredThere are more people about in Cathays than these other places in the evenings so there would be more crimes. Cathays Community Centre must he the busiest community centre in Cardiff.
You've misunderstood some of these crime stats. In particular, the crime stats for Cathays include crimes in the city centre. Where things refer to 'south Cathays' they are talking about the city centre. Cathays crime stats would also includes a large chunk of Bute Park (which is where some of the headlines you flashed up occured). Similarly Riverside and Pontcanna include Potcanna Fields and other parts of Bute Park, which wasn't mentioned. I note you did not include any green areas in your walk around the 'hoods' with the exception of the Church Road play area which has been unfortunately been subject to quite a lot of ASB in the recent months. You also don't seem to understand what the 'police powers' are and what they're for. Police no longer use 'ASBOs'. They haven't for a decade (they were removed in 2014). As others have said you also don't seem to give any good context. I makes me worry about what misinformation you are willing to put out. Saying 'w/stats' in your title implies you are giving good information but your content is poorly researched.
I live in Caerau, and for someone who is actually looking to buy a house here, your figures are way off!😂 £110k for a semi detached in Caerau? Add an extra £100k on top!
Dispenser/Clare gardens area felt a bit dodgy at night sometimes but I never had any trouble walking through there from Grangetown to Canton where I lived in the 90s. Riverside has had a fly tipping problem since I remember it in the 70s. Never had any issues drinking down the Docks prior to gentrification either.
I've lived in Cardiff all my life (72 years) although not in any of the areas in the list and i can honestly say the lust is bullshit. It seems he's gine and found the dirtiest streets no matter where they are. Most of the film appertaining to be Riverside is actually Canton and Pontcanna is definitely not Riverside. The No 1 area Cathays is probably 75% students and they don't care about anything so thats probably why Cathays is so messy. If you've never been to Cardiff don't be put off by this dreadful attempt at a list.
My mum lives in West Lee flats. There's alot of people that live in that block that have outright bought their home. I like your videos but you've shown Cardiff completely wrong. I live in Adamsdown around the the corner from the Church and you've shown nothing but the bad parts there either. Yes it can be rough, but there's alot of good people living in the areas as well.
Great video. I live on the edge of Cathays. The crime rate is really high because the city centre is also Cathays. Students can be noisy, but there are plenty of non students who can't put their rubbish out properly. I've lived here over 30 years. It's ok and nothing like as scary as Ely. 😊
Just a few days ago, I chatted with a couple from England who were traveling in their motorhome here in Finland. We talked, among other things, about how many areas in England have deteriorated. They seemed to be quite happy on their journey towards Norway.
Splott would be a trouble free area if they didn't put these half way houses there. Most of the people who live there are good people let down by about 10-20 familes and all the reoffenders from the half way house.
I have a lot of family that live in Cardiff, mostly in Grangetown (that’s where my mum was from but moved to London before I was born) but I do also have an uncle and cousins that live in Adamsdown. I was there not too long ago, on Copper Street and Meteor Street and the litter was not that bad at all. Also I have never felt unsafe in Adamsdown, Riverside or Butetown. Yes there are some antisocial behaviour at night around the city centre which naturally spills into neighbouring towns but this is the same as any city. I prefer Cardiff to London, always have because of the sense of community you get. I know things seem to be going down hill rapidly recently as my cousin has told me when he moved from Grangetown to Brighton but if the government actually invest correctly then the damage over the past 2-3 years can me undone. I hope things don’t continue because the longer things decline, the less likely it is to recover
Ely is pronounced as E-Lee and Caerau is a Welsh name meaning field and is said like Kay-Ry, however many of the locals don’t pronounce it properly and say it as Ky-Ruh. I was raised there since I was about 3. Caerau and Ely are actually separate districts but many consider them the same place. Caerau is considered the more “safer” area than Ely as it does have some nicer estates. As for the other districts, I know that Cathays is number one on this list but Adamsdown is by far is most horrific district in Cardiff from personal experience, it’s a literal dump especially on places like Glossop Road.
Caerau means 'forts' - with recent excavations discovering evidence of pre and post Roman settlements and of the Roman occupation itself. The local pronunciation (KAY-ruh) in fact echoes the original local Welsh language dialect pronunciation. The BBC Welsh (standard) pronunciation is KIGH-rye.
I have visited Cardiff 4 times and stayed there for a month on each occasions. I walked all over and always felt safe. The last time it had deteriorated and my impression was the council not doing there job. Crime not high compared to where I come from. The citizens should sort this out it's easy.
Great Video once again mate! Enjoyed this…. Cardiff is known as a great City which I don’t disagree with but certainly has its bad parts as you have shown. Everywhere does….. all the best …. Smithy
It's pronounced K-EYE-RA and Ely is pronounced E-Lee I've lived in both areas most of my life and while there is a high drug presence and a problem with crime, the majority of the People are salt of the earth there's a great community spirit especially within streets. For example, it wouldn't be unusual for someone 15 houses up to know who you are and knock your door for some milk or sugar in a pinch Years ago when the kids used to play outside my late mum loved children and they loved her. They would knock the door for a Ice lolly in the summer it got to the point where so many kids were knocking. She ended up having to charge them five pence each to go towards boxes of ice lollies as she was going through so many.
Please learn to pronouce the names . Please only shot video from the areas you are talking about. Please put the areas into context of where they are etc etc Please also note the bin strikes etc etc that have been going on in Cardiff .
I have a surname noone can pronouce correctly, it doesn't bother me, I know it's not thier native tongue and they're trying. Likewise, I tried, looked up the names, etc, apologies if my pronunciation offended you. I did only shoot from the areas I'm talking about. Where do you think I was? I did use context, both in proximity to the centre and each other?
This is exactly what I’m talking about ! We have tears trickling down the face of our minster for Health and Social Services about a story a dog being killed hundreds of years ago and Welsh historical myth or history, whist children are sent to school with not enough to eat , young people with an array of potential headed to a life of petty crimes and drug use - people dying before they get the health care they need but that’s not important what’s important is pronouncing Welsh correctly, Welsh heritage and history- whist the poor of Wales are left to eat 💩 and die!
@@ukexplored you did not sheeot from just the areas you were talking about ... this is a poor clickbait video . research , think .. don't just say rubbish cause it sounds good
Did you mean 'none ' or didnt you pronounce it right? lol only joking bro from Pontypridd - not much fucking better " did I hear you think? lol 😅😅@@ukexplored
I'd love to know what camera you use. Quality and zoom is great. Ps...yeah..should learn how to pronounce the names. Hearing you say COY RA when it's KAI RAH was triggering 😂 Riverside ain't so bad....and I'm white! But good to see other people's perspective on the rapidly declining once great city.
Thank you for the post What stunned me the Most was the litter all over the place, unfortunately . Imagine such Places without litter "and crimes obviously".
Please go and tour Marsh Farm, hockwell ring and Farley hill in Luton. I live a stone’s throw from Marsh Farm, but my house is one of the most expensive properties in Luton as a whole, it’s a strange place and I’d be happy to share a cuppa and local tales
Am amazed that Ely wasn't in the top 5, in truth, @ukexplored . Was born there, have family there, and I visit every month. You ought have visited St. Mary's Church in Caerau - it's been almost completely destroyed by local children over the last thirty-five years, yet remains a fascinating glimpse of what it once was. Albeit that some of the graves have been emptied or desecrated..
Congrats on making caerau look worse than what it is by pointing out all the bad things, next time come later in the day when the pub is open and pop in for a pint, And maybe like the last youtuber who went in there you will realise it's not as bad as the reports make out. Or instead of making a video of how bad the area is you could make a video of how completely opposite the place is compared to previous stats and reports and prove them wrong
I was born and brought up in Caerau. Also lived in Ely for years. Didn't have any problems apart from car radio theft. There was a saying in Caerau red sky at night communal bins on fire. I've lived in Cathays and splott. also.
Sadly you took a preconceived view of CAERAU ( kai rahh) Ely is also pronounced Eeelee. CAERAU and Ely are both very community based and have so many positives, Cardiff West is very under privileged and very neglected by the Labour council who have neglected these areas for a number of years. You can tar a whole community with news reports, but spend time and meet the people. That is what caerau is...Not the buildings .. the people
Just avoid City Road at night and don't go near any of the council estates. Do that and you'll be alright. Cardiff is fairly safe so long as you know what you're doing and don't wander off somewhere you shouldn't. Cardiffians are in general extremely friendly too and will help you if you're lost.
I grew up in canton there was a few murders on my block growing up. I also had a flat in caerau its not a bad place to live at all. Where there's flats you are going to get people dumping stuff. There's lots of good in ely like the dusty forge project the roman Hill Fort ect.
I lived in whitchurch back in the 90s lovely place,my daughter has lived in the city whilst at uni an had no problems,i live near birmingham and that place makes cardiff look like hollywood believe me
Wow. I spent most of my life in Cardiff and it'd weird seeing it from this perspective. The litter is abysmal. I feel sad and a little shaken. What happened?!
I have a lot of family living in Grangetown and it’s a lovely place, my mum grew up on Paget Street and my family all live in between Paget Street and corporation street and I spend at least 3 months a year there. Recently I’ve heard that it’s been going downhill from then but I never witness anything while I’m there. I genuinely thought Splott would be on this list along with Ely
I wonder when/if they'll do Brighton. I'd really love to see the negatives parts of the city i've lived in my whole life to see if they can point out some things that even us residents could miss
Lived in Cathays for 20 years, my partner all their life and it’s not dangerous at all, especially considering how close we are to the City centre. It’s densely populated, some areas have more issues than others thanks to HMOs as mentioned, crime is largely petty and figures are definitely skewed by the city centre stats being included. There are negatives but it’s walking distance to town, literally full of parks and a lake, food from all over the world, many many pluses.
I lived in Cathays. Yeah, rubbish was an issue, but other than that it was a wonderful place to live. It’s sad to see some of the shops of Crwys Road gone now though.
Great video though nothing will beat "graham park estate" north west london during the early 80's it makes all these places look like a kids playground
You should do Newport next in south wales. Just visit Pillgwenlly otherwise known as Pill. You can drive down there anytime of day and see some sights. Drug dealing out in the open and prostitutes all over the place. Not to mention it's next to the main police station 😅. There's some rough old places other than Pill like Bettws, corporation road and many more. Would be a great video
Lived in cathays back in 1999/2000 was bloody great vibrant, yes there was crime like anywhere, but it was very cool, lived in grangetown 1997-1999, that was a little more 'scary' but again fine.
Hey mate I love the music 🎵 with the clip video you shoot 😅😅😅 I agree 👍💯 with. A lot of problems in Cardiff because there is no money spent on the local borough of Cardiff. The UK has abandoned Wales since Boris Johnson was in power . He didn't invest a lot in Wales. Wales is Fu...cked for another century. It's so sad
Please learn to pronounce the names of the places throughout our beautiful city. It looks to me a lot of footage was carefully chosen to show the worst, litter is like that in high student areas but usually when they leave. We are really welcoming but this article puts us down in a big way.
How is it not like what I'm saying when I'm using published stats and showing real footage? Feel free to share experience, I'm looking for a balanced view.
I also live and work in the community and this representation is not accurate at all. Apart from the few nice words you said about the heritage centre park. You’re very wrong about this, happy to chat about it also
Pontcanna is one of the best and cleanest area's of cardiff and of course you have Llandaff fields close by a lovely huge open park but just needs some public toilets, i'm from the rumney side of cardiff .
What you’ve failed to mention about the Cathays stats, is that the city centre is considered Cathays when it comes to district statistics. Hence the bike theft stat.
You definitely ain't from Cardiff if you are putting pontcanna with riverside 😂. Pontcanna is on of the nicest and richest places in Cardiff most of the Welsh MPs live there
i have lived in butetown its not as dangerous as its talked about. the council can do more by cleaning up the mess and fine people who make the mess. this will make it a better place to live for all who live there.
lol mate adamsdown has its problems but it’s really not half as bad as you’re making out. Hardly dangerous. It’s quite easy to visit an area and pick on problems and edit things to blow them up and make them worse than they are. The majority of people aren’t going to have issues at all. And bin day is cleared up pretty fast. The main street, Clifton Street, has a fair few great places to eat and stop at. The main issue is some halfway houses, but the problem people tend to keep to themselves - and some of the people in them are really trying their best. Take it from someone who has lived in Tottenham and parts of London for most of his life, it’s fine, and Cathays and Riverside are also generally fine. The worst thing that’ll happen in Cathays is students and most of them are most likely going to be science nerds. Most cities around the UK have similar issues and I’m not going to pretend there aren’t problems but it’s nooo way near as bad as you’re making out.
I hear you, that's why I go with the offical stats - it's not my opinion, and I don't edit things to make them look worse, I showed what I saw. I read dozens of news reports though, the crimes are pretty serious in those areas, and the crime numbers are insanely high - there is no way to sugar coat that. Sure, plenty of people don't experience any problems, but we shouldn't minimise the fact that a lot of people who do run into serious problems in these areas. On paper, the numbers are high, you can look that up for yourself. It is a capital city at the end of the day, which brings a lot of issues. But like I said in the video, Cardiff is an awesome place overall and in the right areas but I think it's important to show these areas.
@@velvetinedrapes4359 it’s bin day. We do actually have a rubbish problem in Cardiff as a whole (not just poorer areas) but it’s wholly exacerbated on a Thursday. Ftr I don’t live in adamsdown but head there frequently, most days it’s completely fine.
@@ukexplored if you live here though you’d know that most crime takes place between people who know each other. The vast majority of people won’t come up against anything. I’m not going to argue that the Main Street in Adamsdown can’t be seedy but it’s one thing showing the bad, but you also have a lot of positives there from the local circus crew in the church doing good for kids, the yearly festival, places like the Portuguese bakery, the hole in the wall butchers, Sparrow, an excellent Polish deli and a fair amount of solid restaurants and takeaways. Stats don’t tell the whole story, as walking around on a rainy day focusing on problems. But I guess positives don’t get clicks.
Cathays really isn't that bad, i wander those alleyways at night all the time and it's rare to see any real dodgy activity. The crime rate is due to people from the surrounding areas entering cathays to rob from posh students. The worst neighbourhoods to be in at night are adamsdown/ splott and even there i haven't had many issues. The city centre is dangerous at times but all areas are
Im a born and bred Cardiffian and the fact that Llanrhymney isnt on her is shocking. Elys not do bad, parts of Caerau are quite nice. Adamsdown in the 80s was one of the best places, Clifton Street used to be great. Cathays has always been a mess. Butetown is the only place I wouldn't walk at night on my own.
Cathays is indeed hell if you're not a student, thankfully on our block there is only 1 student household, rest is families. Crime in the actual parts of Cathays were people live etc isn't particularly bad but we do get all the city centre crimes lumped in with our area which makes it seem absoultely horrific :p
Well that about sums up my home town. A pretty realistic representation. Its gotten much worse over the last 10 years or so. Litter everywhere, a real drug problem too. Its sad to see my home city falling apart all around me. There are some nice areas of cardiff too, but you'll find them extremely expensive. Quite a rich - poor divide.
A lot of high crime areas have a lot of unreported crimes, some areas have a lot of shoplifting in the stats, etc,
I love your videos . These places have a lot in common with many places here in the USA .
@@ukexplored I've read it before
@@ukexplored I think the issue is that parts of the city centre are categorised as Cathays, so the levels of shoplifting, violent and alcohol related crime would be relative to any major city in the UK. It’s tough to describe, but Cathays in my opinion is safer than the other 4 places mentioned.
There's a lot going on in Cathays and a lot of people around so it rarely feels deserted.
Cathays is a posh area compared to the other areas featured.
@ministryoflies1344 It's just a very busy area, and people pass through it on the way to the city centre. Plus, students can be noisy and dirty. It's often landlords who dump the rubbish they leave behind. They should come and clear their properties the day before bin day.
Lived in Cathays for 34 years, granted rubbish is an issue but apart from that it's been absolutely fine.
Mostly students there
I grew up there during my childhood and everything you said is plus the rats😂
agree Cathays is student area so more cameras there than else. Splott is worse
Thank you you made such a good point, “ nothing has changed “
And that it tragic for the families who live there !

Yes, 100%.
Duw, he's a Cardiff hater butt.
I mean you can let Caerau slide a bit because its Welsh - but there is a well known Ely in England ffs. 😂
Loudest & most passionate audiences
And the best music scene in the UK (which is a VERY bold statement!)
Come back & enjoy some!
Pontcanna is a very well to do place. Some of the shots of Riverside were Canton, but I suppose they are very close together.

Thats it it's a few people who spoil things for everyone else!
I'm from Caerau but let's be fair its a shithole lol
I only recorded it a few days before I released it.
@@neilmcevoy4391You are the Leader of Propel aren't you Neil?
I would visit in my dress or skirt
I blame the council for it. They removed the full sized black bins and replaced them with the slim bins you only used to see outside HMOs. They now charge for taking away of large items such as mattresses, bed bases, fridges, and cookers. When I buy a new mattress or fridge, I ask if the removal of the old one is included in the price. It's not only individuals fly tipping but house clearance firms as well.
the council needs to get rid of the rubbish
Ask someone local to pronounce these places for you. 😂
Just moved to Cathays from the USA
Been here for two months, so far it's been great, much safer than where I'm from.

Thanks! hah, yeah I tried to explain that the police and Census grouped the data but the areas are very different.
@@ukexplored Riverside and Pontcanna are both in the Riverside ward but very different in terms of wealth.
St Mellons in parts was far more dangerous than Cathays, yes - even Tremorfa!
Yeah the Reddit community living in Cardiff say the same, those areas might be worse - the recorded stats only tell part of the story, but it's good to go with the data.

I love canton and Victoria park you got that mixed up with riverside and pontcanna 😊
I live in Caerau, and for someone who is actually looking to buy a house here, your figures are way off!😂

Yeah bra ... Minted bra .
Caerau used to have a fairly decent park. It got set on fire last night.
The rubbish has blown my mind. I must drive around with my eyes closed.

@@peachmelba1637 yes I am aware of that
Splott would be a trouble free area if they didn't put these half way houses there.
Ely is pronounced as E-Lee and
Caerau is a Welsh name meaning field and is said like Kay-Ry, however many of the locals don’t pronounce it properly and say it as Ky-Ruh.

I've lived in both areas most of my life and while there is a high drug presence and a problem with crime, the majority of the People are salt of the earth there's a great community spirit especially within streets.
For example, it wouldn't be unusual for someone 15 houses up to know who

Just avoid City Road at night and don't go near any of the council estates. Do that and you'll be alright. Cardiff is fairly safe so long as you know what you're doing and don't wander off somewhere you shouldn't. Cardiffians are in general extremely friendly too and will help you if you're lost.
I grew up in canton there was a few murders on my block growing up. I also had a flat in caerau its not a bad place to live at all. Where there's flats you are going to get people dumping stuff. There's lots of good in ely like the dusty forge project the roman Hill Fort ect.
I loves the diff! it was cleaner in the 90s
Those aren't the worst areas of Cardiff. Ely, Splott and St Melons should have been on the list.
Drop it like its Splott, gwych ffrind!
Splott is like a holiday resort compared to Ely and st Mellons.
And Tremorfa
@@AlexThomas-e5wPlaces like Splott and Cathays get a lot of people from outside visiting because of the community centres.
O leave splott alone 😂 Its sound!
I lived in whitchurch back in the 90s lovely place,my daughter has lived in the city whilst at uni an had no problems,i live near birmingham and that place makes cardiff look like hollywood believe me
As a Cardiff Boy. Grangetown, Ely I have never seen it look like this. Its never been great, but what has happened.
Oh bin strikes. 😂 that's pretty bad to not point out. Really?
Wow. I spent most of my life in Cardiff and it'd weird seeing it from this perspective. The litter is abysmal. I feel sad and a little shaken. What happened?!
I lived in Butetown for over 5 years. Loved the Cardiff Bay area. Moved now to England
The litter problem in Cardiff is soul destroying ,surprised that Cathays was no 1! personally i think Grange is no 1
Grangetown has a bad rep online for sure, I might go back and look at some more areas. The offical stats always only tell half the story.
Wait....so the inner city area of a Capital City isn't exactly Butlins? Tbf always found Cardiff people on the whole to be pretty friendly
I wonder when/if they'll do Brighton.
I'd really love to see the negatives parts of the city i've lived in my whole life to see if they can point out some things that even us residents could miss
I do want to go to Brighton, so I think it’ll happen. 😀
I lived Cardiff all my life and a few years back cathays was one of the places to be really nice area
Great video though nothing will beat "graham park estate" north west london during the early 80's it makes all these places look like a kids playground
pram.....bbq......toy-tractor......shopping trolley.......suitcase.......big teddybear..........tent......carpet's........cuddly toy.🧸
I second this I’m from Cardiff. These are posh compared to parts of Newport 😂😂😂
@LukeReynolds-d5x legit I was think the same thing 😂
Lived in cathays back in 1999/2000 was bloody great vibrant, yes there was crime like anywhere, but it was very cool, lived in grangetown 1997-1999, that was a little more 'scary' but again fine.
Hey mate I love the music 🎵 with the clip video you shoot 😅😅😅
I agree 👍💯 with.
Lmao I’m from Caerau live there atm this is so funny it’s nothing like ur saying come back and I’ll show u around property
How is it not like what I'm saying when I'm using published stats and showing real footage? Feel free to share experience, I'm looking for a balanced view.
I also live and work in the community and this representation is not accurate at all. Apart from the few nice words you said about the heritage centre park. You’re very wrong about this, happy to chat about it also
I'm from Caerau and he's correct. Don't lie it's a complete dump full of druggies and criminals
Yes. That why I said the stats was skewed with high shoplifting.
You definitely ain't from Cardiff if you are putting pontcanna with riverside 😂. Pontcanna is on of the nicest and richest places in Cardiff most of the Welsh MPs live there
big up! this was useful research for me as im planning on going to cardiff in next few months aha
😀👍
i have lived in butetown its not as dangerous as its talked about. the council can do more by cleaning up the mess and fine people who make the mess. this will make it a better place to live for all who live there.
Also there are hardly any bins anywhere anymore .
lol mate adamsdown has its problems but it’s really not half as bad as you’re making out.
Do the people of Adamsdown have difficulty understanding how bins work?
Crime in the actual parts of Cathays were people live etc isn't particularly bad but we do get all the city centre crimes lumped in with our area which makes it seem absoultely horrific :p
i grew up in grangetown fantastic fun back in the day ,such a shame it got like this
cathays is probably only 1 cuz the stats include the city centre cuz ive always thought its nice just has a bit of a litter problem
I grew up in Ely and the best thing I did was to leave it at the end of the 80s. The most crazy area I ever lived in...have many crazy stories
