  • Our custom mini bike build is finished! We built a full suspension mini bike from scratch in just a few days, and it's ready for a ride! In today's episode, we build a swing arm, build brackets for our front brake, mount the fuel tank, seat, engine, exhaust, and everything else we need to ride this 212cc mini bike!

    We used a fuel tank from a Honda Z50R, we used 1.25" tubing 0.083 wall for the upper frame rail, and 1" tubing 0.083 wall for the rest of the chassis (the build isn't completed yet but we wished we had used a slightly thinner wall tubing).

    • @JoelArseneaultYouTube
      @JoelArseneaultYouTube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fox shock won't fix the problem... their problem is that they have designed a falling rate suspension. They could support the weight with a air shock... but the design is very flawed. The mount on the fame needs to be moved ahead (but the frame is in the way) or the mount on the swing arm needs to be moved back.

      @@JoelArseneaultTH-cam Immaterial provided the shock spring is strong enough.
      They had a longer swingarm with the usual shock angle in mind, but that swing arm proportion made the bike look goofy. The new mount will be fine for all intents and purposes, with a stronger shock.

    • @JoelArseneaultYouTube
      @JoelArseneaultYouTube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SportbikerNZ I'm not sure what you are trying to say ... If you are trying to say that this is not important if they have a stronger spring.... then 1. You are wrong and 2. Maybe you didn't read my whole comment ?
      You are even more wrong if you are saying that this happened because they shortened the swingarm? The swing arm is a lever acting against the shock and the longer it is the more easily it will compress the shock.
      I don't know how I can explain it more simply ... but "all intents and purposes" ... If by that you mean it will move up and down ... then yes... If the intent and purpose is to soften the ride and add an element of control .... it will "work" but it will never work well.
      In order to make this "work" , they will have to make it really stiff at the start of the travel. Generally suspension runs with some sag to allow the wheel to move freely. This design will mean that they have to drastically limit or eliminate sag (by going stiff) and if they are going through a dip, like going through the stream area, and hit a bump / rock while the suspension is already slightly compressed, the force will have a tendency to blow through the remaining travel and bottom out easily.
      The suspension that they have designed is like using a torque wrench that is 100cm long to do the first step of torquing a bolt, a 50cm to do the second stage and using a 10cm one to do the final torquing. It might work... but it won't work well.

    100 percent honesty here, those motor mounts will tear the first or second ride you take on that with heavy throttle. They typically dont last very long on our water pumps and generators just from pull starting them. I love the thought behind it. The only thing you could really do to get rid of vibration is to make rubber bushings for your handlebars and seat.

    If you rotate that rear lower shock mount so it’s pointing more towards the rear tyre. It’ll help stop the spring pivot point from over-centring. Which is what is happening and why it feels like it goes softer at the lower end of the travel.
    If that doesn’t help enough you could lower the top mount town the frame a touch. Or even notch the frame so the shock points toward the engine a little more.
    Definitely needs some kind of higher quality mountain bike shock but shouldn’t be too hard to find on eBay etc with the same eye to eye length and a stiffer spring.

    Hockey pucks make great isolators. They're super stiff so they don't move around a lot, but do well for damping out vibration

    Put a bend in the top tube right behind the tank so that it curves down to the back upright. This will give you the clearance for the travel you need to keep the springs and thus the comfort of the seat.

    Mona Mini Moto for a name. As for antivibe engine mounts Large plate compacters have great sizes of mounts and last years so go that way. Also make a top engine mount where the tank bolted on brace across to tabs mount in the middle She will be TIGHT

    One of your future video projects should be to build a mini bike lift table for building future bikes. Your plasma cutter could make some cool parts for it and it would not only benefit you guys but also subscribers who want to build the same thing and get off the shop floor.

    You need to make a collar that silde up over the lower section of the front fork. That bracket you made needs another point or you will snap those upper screws when you get on the front brakes hard.

    Put a brace on the top of the engine. Like a leaf spring shackle. So it’ll move, but be on a single plane and not solidly mounted

    Coil bind is the word you were looking for. Was thinking you could bend top frame tube down on a 20 deg angle or so to get seat how ya wanted it. pretty cool though

    Hardtail and couple small shocks in place of seat springs would make a pretty smooth rider.

    Those rubber engine isolators that you bought will work just fine if you cut the thickness down to about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch. If you do that and tighten the bolts down really good the motor will not move enough to let the chain pop off but it will still isolate the vibrations giving you a smoother ride then without!!

    For a better rubber mount, you might want to look at something like a BMW E30 transmission mount. The rubber will be a lot stiffer and might just drop into what you already made.
