Qianlong is such a theater kid with how he does this like wtf.
- don't say you're investigating the children's deaths further but instead put the blame on S.O.
- send your S.O. to an abandoned housing unit with nothing but the clothes on her back.
- turn the other way while others try to kill her while she's there.
- only let her out because she poisoned herself as a means of escape.
- act like you did it for her own good but don't tell her anything else and continue on with your day.
- wait months later after all the investigation to throw a party.
- give nice gifts to everyone except for the supposed culprit. Give the culprit dangerous chemicals instead.
- reveal that the whole time you were investigating and now you're using the party to reveal your findings.
- turn the entire party into an episode of Judge Judy to double down on culprit.
- everything is now resolved (in Qianlong's eyes)
Tthat reads like abusive to me, not so much the dramatic chaos associated with theatre kids
If qianlong was really interested in finding out who was behind A’Rou all he had to do was find her brothers. He should be familiar with the hostage taking of siblings for compliance.
He already knew but for political reasons, he just kept his eyes shut off 😏😏
The biggest issue is that he has two major 'roadblocks' politically right now: The first is that the 'real culprit' has a very strong clan that can cause him a lot of problems. The second is that his Royal Mother (the Dowager Empress) kept him and is trying to keep him from learning a lot about what is going on because she has 'ulterior motives' that involve her own attempts to keep some power for herself.
Right now Qianlong isn't as powerful as an emperor as he is when he and Ruyi are together. He's new to the throne and that means he has to make a show of being strong while consolidating power so when the people later step up and go 'prove it' he can sock them in the face without blinking.
In the novel, A'Rou actually says who was behind it all but the Emperor literally goes "Did they really do it it? 👀👀👀 Think very carefully about what you're confessing..." which A'Rou catches on and finally says it's her own doing. Emperor knew who was behind it but values stability and maintaining the status quo of scapegoating lower ranked women with less powerful families.
