Yeah, yeah, millionth time someone praises this version of the Joker (both the writing and Hamill's performance), but I love that the first half of this episode shows that Joker is a legitimately good clown. Even though he's only there to blow up the party he can't resist showing off a bit, giving a performance with a ton of energy and entertainment to it.
A lot of people nowadays tend to forget that the Joker hasn't always just been out to spread chaos an anarchy. That's a fairly new character development. This show draws from all across the Joker's comic book history, and throughout a large part of that history the Joker would consider himself as an entertainer, and considering his massive ego he'd consider himself the best entertainer around, so of course he'd want to put on a good show, even if he was going to kill everyone with explosives at the end of it.
@Jonathan Jones Don't know what the comic books have been doing, but we've seen plenty of different interpretations of the Joker across all media for the past decade or so. Mark Hamill has continued his interpretation in the Arkham games, Joaquin Phoenix's version is more of a tortured soul, John DiMaggio portrayed a more sadistic character in Under the Red Hood, etc...
I'm amazed there isn't an ordinance to immediately tear down any abandoned buildings that are themed in a way that a super villain can repurpose it into a hideout/lair.
"Is Batman a magician, Eric?" I mean ironically enough yes, in this universe he basically is lol considering he trained with Zatara. Also LMAO at the edit of Palpatine's screech over Joker jumping on the roller coaster.
The technical term is "escapologist". It's a bit more specialised (Zatara was a stage magician who incorporated escapology into his act; I think Bruce was only interested in learning the latter though)
@@neilhenderson5581 That's good to know. Maybe *I* am consuming but I had just assumed he had learned all that was there he could to become the best student😅
I just love how quick the Joker his changing his attitude on things...Like when he saw Jordan followed him, he was in killer mode then he change for a second to crazy goofy again ...I think he must have seen the potential fun of more chaos to be done here !
Bruce Timm really wanted to play into the Joker's mercurial, unpredictable nature, so this iteration was prone to having mood swings. It's less about chaos, as the Joker being an agent of pure chaos, as in the Nolan movies, wasn't really what they were going for with the character back in the early 90's. It's really just to show how he can switch on a dime, going from being enraged that some kid snuck into his van to immediately being amused by the fact that Jordan followed his advice.
Fun Fact: When Jordan bumps into that animatronic clown, you can hear Tim Curry's laugh since originally, he was going to voice the character, but was ultimately replaced by Hamill
"From the '50s!" One of the fascinating things about the animated series was the odd time-frame in which it lives. On one hand, it seems to be the 1930s, with the art-deco lettering and architecture (and, in Mask of the Phantasm, a version of the 1939 New York World's Fair plays a major role); but Batman has 1990s (or later?) advanced computing capabilities, and the technology in general seems to be up-to-date with televisions and the like. The 'noir' look is influenced by films of the 1940s. This sort of cheerful anachronism is clearly intentional, and gave the show much of its distinctiveness.
At 8:20, they kinda cut it but we have the only remnant of when Tim Curry was suppose to be the Joker...That mechanical clown, you can really hear it ! All the other episode, Mark Hamill replaced him, the studio thought Curry was too creepy for the kid at the time...He was Pennywise after all...Apparently he has no grudge about it and understood...
Bruce Timm came up with the idea for the episode when he had the image in his mind of Batman trying to save a child, but the child's too scared because of Batman's intimidating look.
"Why does he look 25, but sound 8?" So Bruce Timm has actually talked about the reason Jordan looks kinda weird, with a widower's peak and everything. Simply put, this episode marked the first time that the animators had to draw/animate a child as a main character, and they just weren't used to working with child proportions. They tried several things, but nothing worked, so in the end they just animated Jordan with adult proportions and hair, making him look like a miniature adult. No one was really happy about it, least of all Bruce Timm, but in the end they had to settle for that design in order to get the episode animated on time. Bruce has said that it took several more episodes before they came up with what they considered their first successful character designs for children. 13:18 "I want more, like, Harley." This is why the HBO Max order isn't the best. It introduces Harley way too soon, leaving a huge gap between her first and second appearances. The production order basically had Harley in every Joker-centirc episode after "Joker's Favor", but because the HBO Max order has "Joker's Favor" as the very first Joker episode, followed by the Joker episodes that technically came before it, that means the next few Joker episodes are not going to have Harley in them.
Production notes Bruce Timm claims that he had the idea for the episode when he had the image in his mind of Batman trying to save a child, but the child's too scared because of Batman's intimidating look. This would later be revisited in the Batman Beyond episode "Unmasked".
Trivia The title of the episode is taken from the song "Be A Clown" by Cole Porter, popularized in the 1948 movie musical The Pirate. The song was later rewritten as 'Make 'Em Laugh' in Singin' in the Rain, which incidentally, became the title of another Batman episode. This episode marks the first time in the DCAU where Batman is knocked out and finds himself trapped when he awakens. A few other examples include "Joker's Wild", "Moon of the Wolf", "Read My Lips", "Trial", "Cult of the Cat", and "Mad Love". However, at no point do his captors take advantage of his unconscious state to remove his mask and find out his secret identity.
Tim Curry's uncredited cameo as the Laughing robot clown is a reference to the laugh he would have used had he remained cast as the Joker. According to Paul Dini, Curry's Joker voice strained his throat and was too demanding on his vocal cords, leading to the decision to recast Mark Hamill as the Joker.
5:36 did you guys not hear what she said…? She said he denied that it was a bomb and just said the explosion was electrical. He didn’t deny the explosion. He denied where it came from
I am 100% convinced that that shot of Batman swinging in with the steel girders is a reference to the 60’s Spider-Man cartoon. It felt like a combined reference to 2 different shots in the intro for that show.
Frank Paur, the director, was having difficulties with the storyboarding crew, and when a freelancer quit, Bruce Timm storyboarded the entire second act. The trap Joker attempts to kill Batman with is the famous water torture trap which Harry Houdini escaped out of in approximately two minutes. The roller coaster sequence was adapted into the third stage of the Joker level in the Super Nintendo game The Adventures of Batman & Robin. The chef from "Pretty Poison" and the fat woman from "The Underdwellers" can be seen in the crowd at the birthday party. Jekko's comment that the "Great Prosciutto" was a ham refers to the fact that Prosciutto is the actual Italian word for "ham".
The clown voice is an imitation of clown actor Ed Wynn, perhaps best known to general audiences as laughter-loving Uncle Albert in 'Mary Poppins'. Like many comics, he also showed he had dramatic chops as well, notably in Rod Serling's 'Requiem for a Heavyweight' and a couple of memorable Twilight Zone episodes. He was so distinctive that there have been lots of cartoon voices (like this one) imitating him through the decades. Wikipedia says that one of these was Mark Hamill's character 'Fergle O'Reilly' in Dexter's Laboratory, so yes, it was Hamill doing his Ed Wynn here as well.
In the production order, this is the episode where the crew got a hold of the Joker's character. Before in the Last Laugh and Christmas with the Joker, he was more goofy and not that threatening.
At 16:28, I think Calvin is remembering the scene from The Dark Knight. After Batman crashes his motorcycle, the Joker stops a lackey from removing his mask.
9:00 wow you guys mentioning Cedar point is unlocked a whole cache of memories for me I’m 21 and I went to Cedar point dozens of times as a kid when I lived in Indiana and my grandparents lived in Mentor, Ohio! Loved the Gemini!
Jekko the Clown looks similar to Tim Curry’s “Pennywise the Dancing Clown” in his makeup, hair and outfit. Batman's line about how the Joker "always knew how to make an exit" would later be repeated by the Joker himself in "Joker's Wild" and then by Zatanna in an episode with the same name. When Joker disguises as Jekko the voice he uses is an imitation of the vaudeville and movie comedian Ed Wynn, best known for voicing the Mad Hatter in the Walt Disney Alice in Wonderland.

I think for that whole thing with covering the explosion they were trying to say Hill was blaming it on an electrical accident rather than malicious attempts on his life. Still doesn't work given the witness statements that are gonna be very consistent
Another Batman vs. Joker episode. But it has it's tender moments. Unsteady relationship between the mayor and his son. Them making amends by the end is nice Bats' giving the thumbs up.......... Priceless.
Bruce Timm credited storyboard artist Phillip Norwood for the brilliant bit of the Joker tapping his cane along a fence, and for staging the rollercoaster finale in an exciting but economical fashion. "We knew immediately that we didn't have the budget that Disney's Roller Coaster Rabbit (1990) did," said Timm. "We had to figure out a way of doing all that really neat fast action on a roller coaster without having to animate perspective. Norwood figured out a lot of interesting little cheats, and fortunately AKOM pulled it off, which they don't normally do."
During the climactic rollercoaster chase, the Joker's lapel flower originally squirted acid, making the scene much more dangerous, but BS&P said that was too threatening and it was changed to the flower squirting gas.
There WAS a Six Flags in Ohio. It was no slouch in the roller coaster department itself, at one point having 10. It was a park called Geauga Lake. It was about 20 minutes southeast of Cleveland and was founded in the late 1800s around the same time as Cedar Point. Of note was it was on the side of a small lake, and on the opposite side was Sea World. (Yes, there was a Sea World in Ohio.) It was independent for most of that time before being bought in the 90s by a Premier Parks, who have a bunch of parks around the country. Back around the turn of the millenium, Premier bought Six Flags and rebranded all of their parks to be Six Flags, including Geauga Lake, which became Six Flags Ohio. A year later, they bought the Sea World, and integrated it into the park, rebranding as Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. And then in the mid aughts the amusement park industry was having some trouble and Six Flags was looking to liquidate some of its assets. It sold Six Flags WoA to Cedar Fair, the company that owns Cedar Point (and by that time, all of the Kings parks - Island, Dominion, etc). Cedar Fair had been after Geauga Lake for years as they were their nearest competetor, only about 60-90 minutes away to the east. CF bought the park and rebranded it back to being Geauga Lake... for about two years, when they closed the park for good. As anyone in the know could have predicted they bought the park just to close it. It was a huge blow to my childhood. I was already out of high school when they closed, but we always got season passes and I'd spent my summers living at that park. One summer we went 20 times by the end of the season. Now it's just a rotting wasteland.
The Batman thumbs up the most enduring image from the show. Rogues appearances so far... - Joker: 2 - Clayface: 2 - Catwoman: 2 - Harley: 1 - Scarecrow: 1 - Poison Ivy: 1 - Mr Freeze: 1 - Manbat: 1 - The Mob: 1
The roller coaster scene in this episode reminded me of a similar scene in the Harley Quinn Show. I’d love to see you guys react to that. It’s so fun and zany!
The reason Ohio has a lot of major theme parks is because they wanted Ohio to be the center for Midwest Theme Park attractions. Similar to how Florida is for the South and California for the West.
Probably not. They didn't watch Young Justice because they were watching Teen Titans so they likely won't watch Harley Quinn while watching Batman TAS.
I think his lips are naturally red, but he also puts on brighter coloured lipstick and make up to accentuate his resemblance to the Joker playing card. We actually saw him using a make up sponge in The Last Laugh episode.
Okay, after Aaron mentioning Batman Forever after seeing the fortune teller, I’m genuinely curious, did the show come out before that movie, within the week of it pooping up in theaters, or is Aaron reaching to mention his favorite Batman movies to annoy Eric? Lol
Those fortune teller carnival games existed long before the Batman cartoon or movies. There is one in the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks, which came out in 1988.
Fun Fact: The SNES game of The Animated Series, the first stake takes a big inspiration of Christmas with the joker and this episode, you should play that game " Batman The Adventures Of Batman And Robin" SNES
Did they mention why rick is out of this reaction series? I know they said he has already watched it so i assume he just stopped due to that and focusing time on other things
Production inconsistencies Although "Jekko the Clown" mentions the name "Prosciutto", in the poster he holds the word was mispelled as "Proscuitto". Batman takes a deep breath to hold after the water has passed his nose and mouth.
Interesting premise, but done much better in 2004 series where the kid actually thinks the Joker is really cool and wants to be his apprentice... until he actually starts killing people.

It is a different order to how I watch it but I do like the mystery of what episode is next
I think of Mark Hamill as a Voice Actor more than I think of him as Luke Skywaker.
The reason Ohio has a lot of major theme parks is because they wanted Ohio to be the center for Midwest Theme Park attractions. Similar to how Florida is for the South and California for the West.
Talking about having more Harley... Are they planning to watch Harley Quienn season 3 anytime soon? Is anybody heard sometime about it?
Probably not. They didn't watch Young Justice because they were watching Teen Titans so they likely won't watch Harley Quinn while watching Batman TAS.
Even if it’s just Melanie and Aaron reacting that would be great.
In this series Joker's skin and hair are actually those colors (presumably from acid), but I'm not sure about the lipstick/eyeshadow.
I think his lips are naturally red, but he also puts on brighter coloured lipstick and make up to accentuate his resemblance to the Joker playing card. We actually saw him using a make up sponge in The Last Laugh episode.
@@Rocket1377 Though I could totally see the Joker putting on unnecessary makeup just because he thinks it's funny.
Okay, after Aaron mentioning Batman Forever after seeing the fortune teller, I’m genuinely curious, did the show come out before that movie, within the week of it pooping up in theaters, or is Aaron reaching to mention his favorite Batman movies to annoy Eric? Lol
Show came out before Batman Forever
Those fortune teller carnival games existed long before the Batman cartoon or movies. There is one in the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks, which came out in 1988.
Fun Fact: The SNES game of The Animated Series, the first stake takes a big inspiration of Christmas with the joker and this episode, you should play that game " Batman The Adventures Of Batman And Robin" SNES
6:29 LOL
Would anyone like to see Super Monkey Team Hyperforce Go, Swat Kats and Gargoyles on here?
Blind Wave✅Batman✅Badass!✅
This is the first episode of BTAS I ever saw.
When Joker attacked Batman on the coaster was that YOU guys with the palpatine scream or was that actually Hamill? lol
No, they added that. It's not in the actual episode.
@@Rocket1377 Thanks! I mean it's not uncommon to have effects reused but that was a touch on the nose. haha. have a great weekend!
Love you guys! Keep it up! Except for the screaming, it scares my cat. Big fan! 😀
Did they mention why rick is out of this reaction series?
I know they said he has already watched it so i assume he just stopped due to that and focusing time on other things
I wonder why also
You guys should do Batman Beyond after this, followed by the Return of the Joker movie
They should do Superman next, since there are some crossover episodes.
You guys should consider watching DC Static Shock TV sometimes in the future. That show is rad 🥰
9:55 Palpatine :)
Hm, well, this was a interesting one, let’s see what the next one will be.
Hope Bruce go the kid a show and meet and greet with Zatana. MUCH better role model for an aspiring young magician.
Love the hat Aaron.

Production inconsistencies
Although "Jekko the Clown" mentions the name "Prosciutto", in the poster he holds the word was mispelled as "Proscuitto".
Batman takes a deep breath to hold after the water has passed his nose and mouth.
4:09 why in shows kids always have to run away in some dramatic fashion 😆😆😆😆.
Can you react to the cuphead show season 2
Interesting premise, but done much better in 2004 series where the kid actually thinks the Joker is really cool and wants to be his apprentice... until he actually starts killing people.
Stop that magic trick nonsense.
Hey come see this clown.
The dad is so inconsistent it's funny.
React on FRIENDS
