How to Replace Control arms, Tie Rods and Stabilizer Links

- Here's how to install upper control arms, tie rods and stabilizer links to update the front end on a Honda or an Acura.
When vehicles accumulate higher mileage, suspension parts will wear out, causing excessive play in the steering wheel, vibration, and clunking sounds over bumps. Left to decay, the suspension is a vital part of the car's relationship to the ground. Therefore worn out parts could become a serious safety issue.
To check the upper and lower ball joints on a vehicle with double wishbone front suspension, the lower control arm must be jacked up off the ground to relieve the suspension of any loading on the ball joints. The wheel is rocked back and forth at the 12 and 6 o-clock positions to check for play in the ball joints (a pry bar can also be implemented) and at 3 and 9 o-clock positions to check for play in the steering rack tie rods.
In this video, the upper control arms, stabilizer links, inner and outer tie rods and steering rack boots are replaced in a step by step how to tutorial. The list of parts used were from Mevotech:
CMS20404, CMS20405, MK90456, MK90457, GEV80210, GES80288, GES80287 and MS80002.
These parts were replaced on an Acura TSX, but will be similar for Acura TL, Honda Accord, Civic, CRV, Element and RSX.
Special tools required are:
Big hammer or ball joint separator to free the upper ball joint from the knuckle
Inner tie rod removal tool which can be rented for free from parts stores
Angle grinder to cut off rusted stabilizer links
Alignment Rack to align the toe setting when tie rods are replaced
Bungee cords to secure the knuckle when the upper control arm is removed.
Torque wrench to properly torque all fasteners

You make the best car repair videos. Straight to the point and sharply edited, with a sprinkle of humor. Question: can a plumbers wrench be used to remove and install the inner tie-rod? That special tool seems a bit pricey.
You can rent it from autozone for free, just pay a deposit and then when you bring it back they refund all of your deposit
Yes a wrench can be used. In my case the roads were in the perfect spot for me to use an adjustable and whack it free

Finally did this job today on my Accord. Found out that the upper control arms I removed where still very good, but replaced them anyway, since I already had the new ones. That went really well. The tierod ends where the weakest link I found out. They where a bit loose on the ball joint. The inner tierods where still ok, but also replaced those. Took me 4,5 hours in total, on my dad's driveway with a jack. Very tiring job if you have to kneel down (my back hurts). Especially hard to replace the inner tierods without the special tool. Used a cheap little tool I bought online, but what a hassle... The retainer washers where a little hard to bend, could only hammer down on one side.
But the car handles a lot better know I must say. No more racket in the steering. Feels way more secure.

Agreed on those inner tie rods and stupid washers. Things should definitely be tighter, more so with a new set of struts.

3:55 - you can see a hole that light is going through in the mcperson’s collumn. The same hole is on the other side. You put a rod through them and let the upper arm rest on that support- this is the right point to tighten the bolts as these holes are made for that purpose.

Simply put: I just love this channel ♥️ .. and I also use my old clothes as garage rags while wrenching on my car and motorbike 😁 socks soaked in petroleum and then worn like gloves are excellent for cleaning motorbike chains 😊 and tooth brushes for cleaning bolt threads instead of wire brushes that prick and hurt your fingertips 😋
... and I wish we had supreme Mevotech parts here in Europe, they seem so good and beefy, my Volvo S40 P1 eats through suspension parts with an appetite of a kitten, I've been using heavy duty Meyle parts for the last 2 years, they are better than average, but still not perfect, a ball joint, stabilizer link or a tie rod would last for aprox. 35 to 40k km only.

speedkar99 The trailing arm bushings are already in. They were super easy. Getting the sway bar links is a real challenge though.

@@speedkar99 It is -06 with little under 100k miles. Really like it and now I'm doing work that last owner didn't do and some preventive work also like timing chain tensioner, power steering pressure hose, ignition coils, wheel bearings and much other "Honda stuff"

If you have an impact and no rust it can be done in 2 min 😉
It takes more time to be prepped to break the record. Jack the car, connect the impact, assemble the spare parts, remove the tire, find your brother's used items etc. It will definitely take more than 10 minutes.

Maybe the relay or the pressure sensor?
Usually the repair manuals have a detailed diagnostic to follow

im having trouble figuring out what exactly to order for my 04 tl. this was definitely a helpful video but what about the rear control arms? im not even sure they are called control arms. are they rear lateral links or are those different parts? any info is appreciated. thanks

@@speedkar99 TIMING chain/belt with *including* the WATER PUMP & the "OIL PUMP RESEAL" - Doing this job all at once is a money/time saver... else if you piece meal you have to revisit the same parts...
also flushing *coolant* circuit is a good idea before the heater core gets corroded and starts leaking... steamy windshield 😂
The heater circuit control *valve* likes to get *jammed* hard to operate.
Note: dont overlook *cabin* air filter replacement... else not enough air circulates to cool down the blower resistor-speeds module that will blow its thermo-fuse. [Lube blower shaft bearings with 3 drops of 10w30 is never a waste]
The whole car (TL'04 150kMi) is amazingly well built.

Curious how the mevotech parts have held up over the last year. I'm looking to refresh my TSX suspension and they're way cheaper than OEM but that's for nothing if parts break down in a year or two.
My brother doesn't have this car anymore
AHC garage put on oems on their $24k type S rebuild, they originally had aftermarket but due to poor ride quality, switched to OEMs. Unfortunately a single lower control arm from oem is $500.
I'm planning on using MOOG. What did you end up going with?
I’m on one year and a month on my mevotech lower control arms. At this point can’t tell from oem
@@fkp1692 ended up going with hard race lower control arms and OEM Honda ball joints and the lower arms. For the upper control arms I did the skunk 2 pro adjustable arm with the user replaceable ball joint. It's been on there for a while now and been great. Just ordered some rear lateral links from hard race.

In California, we have high housing prices, crazy traffic, and high state taxes. But our cars have no rust and 20+ year old cars look immaculate underneath. So we got that going for us.

Actually the lower control arm was just changed yesterday after this work was done.
The bushings bolts were seized and that chewed up the rubber.

Go for the best if you can afford it! Personally, I like Moog's Parts!
So far Mevotech parts have been holding up well.
Yes I've used them in Toyotas and they work fine.
I find Moog at the higher end of the price spectrum and recently there have been mixed reviews. To each, their own. At least they are all much less than OEM.
I suggest looking around somewhere like rockauto. They usually have multiple options for the same part separated by tiers like stock, premium, heavy duty, etc.
Good for helping to decide the best cost to quality ratio you desire or even just to see what's available out there to fit your needs

Looking for opinions on Mevotech stuff. Is it a good cheap brand or is it a 5,000 mile fix brand?
Well I haven't put 5K on these yet, but out of the box they seem good for the price.
I think the best aftermarket brand for suspension parts is Moog. But Mevo should be close.

Excuse my lack luster knowledge but all the parts in the description were obviously left side right side duh lmao, but Is the Part Number # GEV80210 that he listed in the description the part for both sides cause I noticed there isn’t 2 of that part and was wondering if I just order 2 of the same thing as it’s interchangeable for both sides
Can you do 2nd gen. Sienna lower ball joint? Is it doable to replace ball joint without the whole control arm in 2004-2010 Sienna FWD?
Yes it's a bolt on ball joint. Search my Toyota ball joint video, it's the same as the sienna.

Do you REALLY need that Tie Rod tool to put on the new tie rod? It seems like the same adjustable wrench you can use to take it off would work just fine to install the new one. Thoughts, anyone?
Yes I used an adjustable wrench. It's a little difficult but doable. Make sure you get it on there tight, I had one come apart on me

My replacement didn't have zerk fittings to add grease and push out contaminates....
They're $20 for my Honda and take just a few minutes to replace. I'd be happy to replace them when the time comes instead of messing around with grease.

The skills are transferable, but of the cars listed in the description, only Accord, TL and TSX (and Civics up to year 2000) are double wishbone. So if your car doesn't have some of these parts, don't freak out! It's fine.
