Heretic is a dark fantasy first-person shooter video game released in 1994. It was developed by Raven Software and published by id Software through GT Interactive. The game was released on Steam on August 3, 2007.
Using a modified version of the Doom engine, Heretic was one of the first first-person games to feature inventory manipulation and the ability to look up and down. It also introduced multiple gib objects that spawned when a character suffered a death by extreme force or heat. Previously, the character would simply crumple into a heap. The game used randomized ambient sounds and noises, such as evil laughter, chains rattling, distantly ringing bells, and water dripping in addition to the background music to further enhance the atmosphere. The music in the game was composed by Kevin Schilder. An indirect sequel, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, was released the following year. Heretic II was released in 1998, which served as a direct sequel continuing the story.
Three brothers (D'Sparil, Korax, and Eidolon), known as the Serpent Riders, have used their powerful magic to possess seven kings of Parthoris into mindless puppets and corrupt their armies. The Sidhe elves resist the Serpent Riders' magic. The Serpent Riders thus declared the Sidhe as heretics and waged war against them. The Sidhe are forced to take a drastic measure to sever the natural power of the kings destroying them and their armies, but at the cost of weakening the elves' power, giving the Serpent riders an advantage to slay the elders. While the Sidhe retreat, one elf (revealed to be named Corvus in Heretic II) sets off on a quest of vengeance against the weakest of the three Serpent Riders, D'Sparil. He travels through the "City of the Damned", the ruined capital of the Sidhe (its real name is revealed to be Silverspring in Heretic II), then past Hell's Maw and finally the Dome of D'Sparil.
The player must first fight through the undead hordes infesting the location where the elders performed their ritual. At its end is the gateway to Hell's Maw, guarded by the Iron Liches. After defeating them, the player must seal the portal and so prevent further infestation, but after he enters the portal guarded by the Maulotaurs, he finds himself inside D'Sparil's dome. After killing D'Sparil, Corvus ends up on a perilous journey with little hope of returning home.
I played a shitload of heretic as a kid, to the point of speedrunning through it over and over again, but there's actually one more big difference between heretic and doom that I think deserves a mention, and that's the absence of hitscan enemies like doom's shotgun grunts- this game has you able to dance nimbly through and around packs of mobs in much tighter quarters and progress much faster as a result.

Yep, every time you take damage you could with 99% certrainty have dodged it somehow. I never played through all of Heretic as a child, I stuck with Doom. warcraft 1 & 2 and Lords of the Realm 2 until the proper 3d revolution took place.

The particle effects and lighting in this mod are pretty impressive. This has got me hankering for some more Heretic goodness. I always thought Heretic's level design was more interesting and layered than most of Doom's, and turning people into chickens never gets old!

Heretic such an underrated series
I actually really enjoyed the sequel which no one talks about. I mean, it was completely different and its dated asf now, but its still a cool little action adventurer game and looked pretty good using the Quake 2 engine.
@@tarnishedone4746 Agreed. I remember playing through it the same christmas I got Half Life and loved both of them. At the time I actually enjoyed Heretic 2 more due to its different gameplay, I had never liked a 3rd person game before -probably cuz it mainly played like a first person game.
There's something special about 2D enemy sprites in FPS games.
They will never look outdated.
If you really want to see beatiful monster sprite work, I cant overpraise HeXen, Blood and Powerslave. ;-)
Could it be because you can put hundreds of them in a level at the same time without there being any slowdown?
Same here, there's a charm that I will always love. I think because there's a real crafted feel to it and a slight hint of an "uncanny valley" effect without it being really unsettling.

Damage in Heretic was coded in a way that almost works like an actual RPG because of weapons having minimal to critical damage stats, you can sometimes kill an imp with a single crossbow shot or two depending on the random damage the weapons deal, that's why sometimes it takes more shots to take down enemies, because damage works like a roll of the dice, you can either deal a weak attack, or a critical hit depending on the weapon's damage and the enemy's health...
Just something I feel was worth mentioning...

First, we got Brutal Doom. Now, we got Brutal Heretic. Now, all we need is Brutal Hexen and we got ourselves a trilogy for the FPS ages.
I've been waiting for this mod ever since I heard of Brutal DOOM.
Heretic will always have a special place in my heart since I played it with my brother on his old 486 PC. It may be a blatant DOOM clone but it's still a great game and I'm glad to see it's finally getting some love! Now if only more people knew about the sequel, which is an action platformer and not an FPS but it's also a fantastic game and a real rare and unknown gem from the late 90's era of PC gaming.

I have Strife, and the reason why there's no brutal version available is because it was taken down by Sgt mark IV because of criticisms. Maybe there's a version still floating around though. Closest it can get to being brutal is Strife Overhaul.

They soundsimilar and most of them (wand, claw, hellstaff, firemace) work similar, firing fast exploding projectiles.

Heretic and Hexen are basically Dooms stranger cousins that added some pretty cool upgrades to the engine, but are often downplayed and overlooked because it was never used to its full potential. A game that wants to be an rpg with some neat additions, but was made by people who ultimately didn't like storytelling.
Strife is based on the Doom engine. The RPG-lite/fantasy game that is based on the Wolf engine (albeit a bit modified) is Shadowcaster.
TBH though, look at games that did have strong RPG elements, System Shock and Cybermage. They are often downplayed and overlooked because they're not Doom. That's all there is to it. It wasn't until later that games like Blood and Duke Nukem actually got out of its shadow.

Yes! I can't believe I missed this mod's existence! I always adored Heretic/Hexen's dark fantasy theme to no end. Raven Software nailed the aesthetic down right. Thank you for the video! If I recall too there was a Brutal Hexen but it was abandoned I think?

Great review. around 4:00 you mentioned how some enemies take more damage than usual. In the original, I noticed this too and I'm pretty sure its because the Demons and mummies that are initially introduced are separate enemy types than the identical looking ones that throw fireballs and flying skulls. They are treated like new enemies that you see in later levels and thus, take more damage. I think it added more dynamic on the enemies you are dealing with even if they look identical as there are a mix of both in the later levels. I'm eager to play this mod and see if its the same thing is happening there and I suspect it is.
As much as I love Heretic, I hated this mod (and another one that got spawned from it). All of the Heretic's charm was lost.
Also most weapons became fastprojectile hoses which made them loose their individuality completely.
V2 fixes your complaint about enemies taking far to many hits before they die. There's a highlighted name of the enemy on the upper right corner of the screen now, when you aim your crosshairs at them, and when you fire at them, they now have a red damage bar that gets shorter and shorter, so you begin to know just how many hits it will take to destroy them. It's even more fun, as some weapons reduce their damage bar more than others. By the way, I like the melee attacks. It keeps the gamer on their toes!

Brutal Heretic mod seems decent, especially the sounds, but maybe the mod doesn't add all that much to the original DOS game or jHeretic or zHeretic.
But well... we just have to be trendy and brutalize every old classic game in the 2018 :D

So, we’ve got Brutal Doom, Brutal Heretic and Brutal Hexen. Now we need Brutal Strife.
If I understand correctly, there was supposed to be a bigger emphasis on the RPG element, in the form of increasing stats after every level. But even as it is now, it's pretty damn fun.
Put the item scrolling to your mouse wheel and item use to mouse 2 and it controls just perfectly.
I didn't clicked so fast to a new video until now. :)
I liked Heretic so much better than Hexen, I will check out this mod after I searched up the game at my PC game list.

I really recommend this game, it is awesome! I love what they've done with the tome of power. The level up system seem to make you able to carry more ammo, hp and armor(if I remember correctly Gman was unsure of what it did). Also the mighty boot is nice but weird, if you kick against a wall you take the damage yourself :D.

The player's death scream sounds straight out of Gothic 1 and 2. If you didn't know those games were sort of the 'Dark Souls' of their day in terms of brutal difficulty.

There are so many melee attack enemies in fps games, I'd be glad to see the player's character actually train for once and have some response to these situations as their background training usually should involve. I can see why gordon freeman sucks with these enemies, but mechanics, tacticians and soldiers would really need to smarten up with never coming up with plan to deal with these issues of spider creatures.

The mod's a really good brutal mod, probably the best amongst the old games.
The only issue i have is with the balancing, just like you said, enemies seem to be too tanky and they take too many shots from the crosbow and the dragon claw when not empowered,at times making you run out of ammo.
Otherwise, a great deal of fun

Woah, looks amazing. Just beat the original via ZDoom. Also, can we get a Steam PC version of Doom 64? Brutal Doom 64 was great, but I want the real deal with achievements and everything!
The reason why the enemies take more shots than they should is because Raven gave them more health than the Doom enemies, but forgot to make the weapons do more damage to compensate.

I'd say the enemies are actually far less frustrating than ones in Brutal Hexen RPG. I've died so many times in an exchange with those basic ass two-headed mace wielders that I'd save every time I killed an enemy.
