The levels are just so well designed I feel like games today honestly went backwards in some ways. The volcano erupting, or a magic carpet that flies around. They were so creative.

In 1997 me and my 2 brothers hated Shadow Warrior soundtrack, then I had my copy of Destruction Derby 2 for PC lying in the shelve as the game is too hard for our tastes but we loved the soundtrack so the best ideia came, put DD2 disk on the CD drive to play Shadow Warrior with it's soundtrack. I never regret this, it's like DD2 music was made with Shadow Warrior in mind, the perfect couple.

I think you got killed by one of those flying chunks of lava. They show up in E1M3 and some other levels where there's lava. Gotta say though, one great thing about Shadow Warrior was making it so your main workhorse weapon were the rapid firing uzis as opposed to shotguns like most games of the era.
"...And I challenge anyone to find a fault in a weapon that lets you fire small nuclear missiles" Some cases you get yourself blown away if you're not careful unless there's a conveniently placed wall to go behind. I was about to bring up Turok & Bloons Tower Defense since they also had nukes.
Awesome review. Shadow Warrior is by far my favorite Build Engine game, primarily because there were so many unique settings, making me look forward to each new level, wondering what it was going to look like and feel like. I particularly enjoyed the many different outdoor areas, some of which gave me a mild case of vertigo. I also loved the color palettes throughout. It was truly a beautiful game. And yes, it was a difficult game, but I managed to finish it, which is saying something, because usually if a game is too difficult, I just give up on it after a while. But the unpredictable level design kept me pushing onward, eager to see what was around the next corner. Extremely fond memories. I really need to give it another go.
5:34 getting covered in blood, and then having it be washed off when you jump into water. It's the small things that really make things perfect. Ya know?
The railgun firing effect is the same sound effect as used in vehicle shooting rockets in the PC game, Total Annihilation (TA). Also, the humming sound is from the TA home screen.
I am loving the improvements to the channel, making less reviews but more quality ones is really nice, I love the channel but some older videos aren't (IMO) as quality but damn dude you make great vids
One thing most people seem to miss with the shotgun is that you can actually cancel the 4 shot burst fire short by either clicking fire again or changing fire modes. It gives you just an extra level of control on your shotgun, and I love it. Also the invisibility potion works way better than most other FPS's invisibility because the enemies can't attack you at all until it's over, and your fists do more damage while it's active. You can use this to cheese the final boss.
ehi gman what about a look back to the first reboot of Shadow Warrior of 2013? i would love to hear you get more in detail into it , btw great video as always
Holy cow this is the first game I ever played as a kid and I had forgotten it's name. Cool review! My cousin and I spent dozens if not hundreds of hours making levels in the build engine for DN3D, throughout several years. Then we were very excited when I got SW, mostly because there were new effects and advances in the Build engine. But we ended up under the impression that the game showcased some effects that weren't possible to replicate in the Build software. But we were kids, internet wasn't what it is today, and we didn't even read English at the time. So I mean, who knows.
Hey if you're not playing the dos version, landmines sometimes are hidden underground. Like their physical sprites are hidden underground - they are sprinkled throughout and meant to be visible/shootable
Nice work gman, I'm a huge (french) fan of your work. We need a 《most annoying enemies in fps games》 video. Im sure you want to do it anyway (mentioned it in several videos) I'll patreon support as soon as possible
grenades are really really useful for clearing out many enemies at a time or multiple higher tiers, you just have to be mindful of the splash damage and it retains its usefulness also i dont think thats how youre intended to use the sticky bombs. you can definitely put a bunch on an enemy but i think its a lot more effective to put sticky bombs on your surroundings for the enemies to walk near and explode horrifically >:] in general i think sticky bombs and all the ninja gadgets are more multiplayer oriented, but they can be very satisfying to use in singleplayer if you know when 10:33 you got hit by either a lava rock from the volcano or a wandering coolie as per ninjas having no mercy, heres a quote from one of the SW novels :] "Never give a good fighter a fair fight. Kill him quick. Give him no chance to kill you first." staying out of cover for long periods of time where ninjas can shoot you is a nono. standing in line of sight of a higher tier ninja for more than a second or two is a HUGE nono the expansion packs were both never released commercially because SW didnt sell well. they were abandoned; WD is fully complete, not sure about TD. though they were later released for free by the publishers. Wanton destruction is SW at its peak, and Twin Dragon is just a bit meh. TD was a map pack made by a bunch of hobbyist mapmakers under a small time limit so it literally was a fan made spinoff, which is pretty hard to fault it for. SW was coded in assembly to "optimize" it. some corners were cut and almost everything is pretty hardcoded. unlike Duke theres no con scripts or anything, and you cant just add in new enemy types with an addon. level music was also hardcoded, so addons had to order their levels to fit with the list of music already decided by the registered episode of SW. this is probably why TD levels didnt always fit the music. i like what WD did with the new enemy designs; i dont care how annoying WD mercenaries are i love them anyway, its nice seeing original SW get some attention nowadays. i despise what FWH have done with their SW reboot games (aside from their first which was pretty nice), and its nice to know im not the only one who still plays the original and enjoys it :]
Twin Dragon was apparently supposed to have a new soundtrack; it even has credits for the new music. My guess is that in the process of the add-on getting canned and then released for free the music was dropped, perhaps to keep the download size down (this was the '90s after all, and Shadow Warrior used CD music as opposed to tiny midi files like Duke 3D).
@@todesziege very interesting, but considering the quality (and the development being rushed badly) of the addon as a whole; while music may have been planned i dont think it was ever written or added Twin Dragon was only publicly released some time in the 2010s iirc, after the Twin Dragon team fought to finally get back the rights to at least freely distribute it instead of letting it collect dust
@@mow_cat No, Twin Dragon, though delayed, was released back in the day; I don't remember the exact date but something like 1999-2000 IIRC. Regarding whether the music was done or not, or why it was left out it it was done, we can only speculate, but given the timeframe of release it would have been a hard task to actually distribute the music.

"You no mess with the Lo Wang"
You clearly don't belong here. It's "You no mess with the Lo Wang"
That opening line is one of my favourite in all shooters. That and DOOM 2016's opening line
I don’t mean to put such a burden by saying this but you have a unique sense of humor and not only are your reviews helpful, but watching your videos are a sense of therapy for me in a way as I try to avoid these thoughts of suicide or thinking there’s nothing to look forward to in life. This is one of those things I can wake up and distract myself with sometimes. Keep it up sir
Aww, thanks dude!
Awesome, going to play this game for the first time. All these old fps games are starting to look more and more appealing to me.
Just remember this when you spend fifteen minutes looking for the silver key to advance in a level
When I play FPS games I usually try and only save when I start a new level, but this game broke me. Definitely one of the hardest ever made.
This game give you so much testosterone, by the end. You'll look like 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger
I remember getting this when it came out, totally blew me away, still have the big box version.
10:32 Flaming rock from the volcano killed you
It is so crazy to have a rematch with the snake and Sumo man, but end up being killed by the volcano
But you cant denied that fighting on volcano isnt badass
@@nguyenthenam1657 Zilla could never ask for pizza, but put envy in the hearts of many Bond villains.
Badass vulcan fortress.
I think you got killed by one of those flying chunks of lava. They show up in E1M3 and some other levels where there's lava.
Gotta say though, one great thing about Shadow Warrior was making it so your main workhorse weapon were the rapid firing uzis as opposed to shotguns like most games of the era.
"...And I challenge anyone to find a fault in a weapon that lets you fire small nuclear missiles"
Some cases you get yourself blown away if you're not careful unless there's a conveniently placed wall to go behind. I was about to bring up Turok & Bloons Tower Defense since they also had nukes.
I love how in every review Gman sneaks in a subtle your momma joke, when it appears out of nowhere I constantly shit myself laughing
OG Shadow Warrior is one of the greatest of all time! I just finished a play through recently and, yeah, its brutally difficult, but so fun.
10:30
It was the sheer badass-ness of the game that killed you. You'd be surprised how often that happens.
Oh come on, the nade launcher is amazing here. In fact, it is one of the best ones I've ever seen in an fps game.
I agree. All corners and turns become your allies.
Much preferred games from this era. Glad to be old enough to experience them first hand
i played this everyday after school this takes me back wow
6:22 that's a fun way of saying 'Rocket Launcher' you got there.
Should play it again. The one liners always cracked me up. Especially how he addresses the ladies.
5:34 getting covered in blood, and then having it be washed off when you jump into water. It's the small things that really make things perfect. Ya know?
Old is always gold.
Love all old games
@@rubz1390 yeah , that is why i was suggesting to update it , i would like to hear a more in dept analisis
@@whirligig_saw with all respect, gmanlives not good in deep analysis. But yea, SW2012 review is kinda biased
Always a good day when we get an honoring of one of the finest FPS of the 90's.
And Lo Wang is larger than life, what a Chang!
I gotta go to jail this evening but I sure am glad I got to see this first. Thank ye, Gman. I love ye.
19:47 that Austin powers clip killed me!
i had to pause the video i was laughing soo hard.
Holy cow this is the first game I ever played as a kid and I had forgotten it's name. Recently I saw Shadow warrior 3 in some upcoming game videos and then started watching gameplay videos since it looked so good. And then this came up in my feed. God bless the youtube algorithm. This brings back so many memories, thank you !
Shang Hai'ed Heist. Tokyo Showdown. Brooklyn Botanical Gardens of Badassery. (unofficial name ideas for future map packs).
Im sure you want to do it anyway (mentioned it in several videos)
I'll patreon support as soon as possible
when he had the heart weapon and the low wang clone said to him "You have no honor" i lost it. The guys that made this game had a sense of humor.
The Classic Complete version is free on GOG. They also gave away Shadow Warrior 2 about a year ago.
10:29 - I think the explosion's hitbox was still active. I don't know a lot about how Shadow Warrior works though, so I could be wrong.
7:57 System Shock had a railgun (I'd never heard of them before that game!) but I guess that's not strictly a FPS
18:55 what did you search for regarding thrash metal that came back with ics vortex?
3:04 haha looks like the mirror tricked ya ;)
Imagine a Nuts.wad style level, but it's all hornets. *My nightmare*
grenades are really really useful for clearing out many enemies at a time or multiple higher tiers, you just have to be mindful of the splash damage and it retains its usefulness
also i dont think thats how youre intended to use the sticky bombs. you can definitely put a bunch on an enemy but i think its a lot more effective to put sticky bombs on your surroundings for the enemies to walk near and explode horrifically >:]
in general i think sticky bombs and all the ninja gadgets are more multiplayer oriented, but they can be very satisfying to use in singleplayer if you know when
10:33 you got hit by either a lava rock from the volcano or a wandering coolie
as per ninjas having no mercy, heres a quote from one of the SW novels :] "Never give a good fighter a fair fight. Kill him quick. Give him no chance to kill you first." staying out of cover for long periods of time where ninjas can shoot you is a nono. standing in line of sight of a higher tier ninja for more than a second or two is a HUGE nono
the expansion packs were both never released commercially because SW didnt sell well. they were abandoned; WD is fully complete, not sure about TD. though they were later released for free by the publishers. Wanton destruction is SW at its peak, and Twin Dragon is just a bit meh. TD was a map pack made by a bunch of hobbyist mapmakers under a small time limit so it literally was a fan made spinoff, which is pretty hard to fault it for.
SW was coded in assembly to "optimize" it. some corners were cut and almost everything is pretty hardcoded. unlike Duke theres no con scripts or anything, and you cant just add in new enemy types with an addon. level music was also hardcoded, so addons had to order their levels to fit with the list of music already decided by the registered episode of SW. this is probably why TD levels didnt always fit the music. i like what WD did with the new enemy designs; i dont care how annoying WD mercenaries are i love them
anyway, its nice seeing original SW get some attention nowadays. i despise what FWH have done with their SW reboot games (aside from their first which was pretty nice), and its nice to know im not the only one who still plays the original and enjoys it :]
@@todesziege very interesting, but considering the quality (and the development being rushed badly) of the addon as a whole; while music may have been planned i dont think it was ever written or added
Twin Dragon was only publicly released some time in the 2010s iirc, after the Twin Dragon team fought to finally get back the rights to at least freely distribute it instead of letting it collect dust
@@todesziege nvm actually, ur right about the release date, it was 1998. i thought it was much later
@@mow_cat Maybe getting it mixed up with the other expansions? Wanton Destruction was released much later, and Deadly Kiss still haven't been.
Walking into the explosion while it was still animating? @10:28 I assume, I remember Golden eye had that for its explosives, can't walk into the aftermath till its completely settled
Shadow Warrior is really funny, finding the secrets in this game is a must for new players
I still remember LOL at Wangs one liner " You weak as baby fart"... It was one of those super loud bursts of laughter. I know I know childish but it got me.
Played this a couple of years ago. Never heard of it back of the day. Great game. Lots of fun. The build engine does something for shooter game that's quite unique.
one of the things that I liked in the game (that you didn't mention) was that you can regain health by punching the wooden Dummies
10:34 - I think it was a falling meteor from above.
My only 2 complaints about classic SW are: levels sometimes are structured like a maze and I have no idea what to do next and sometimes puzzles are taking away a bit too much time on my side. Otherwise I freaking love SW series.
