    An overwhelming task of paint and primer awaits us. Just the setup takes a whole day. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
    We are operators pretending to be mechanics!
    Thanks for watching!

    Not a bad job for two young fellas, can’t wait for the top coat

    Having someone come in and sandblast saved you a lot of work, but having that much ready to paint all at once is definitely the downside to doing that. You are making great progress. Can’t wait to see it all finished. Keep the videos coming! Thanks!!

      We were truly grateful for the hard work he put in on all those parts. It was a hot day too and he worked hard. We are so very close to getting this project done. ☺️

      If you heat up the metal before welding, it usually welds better.
      Especially on cast iron.

    Brother inlaw and I went to the John Deere combine factory in East moline ILLINOIS pretty awesome they have assembly line they have huge paint take they put the combine in and parts throw a electrical charge in them paint sticks pull combine out extra paint runs off like water and extra parts they have to ground to the combine the combine itself is just a skeleton when it’s all put together robots put a clear coat on it but your right about cat paint after all the yrs it still hangs in there

      I bet that combine Factory was fascinating. A lot of the Caterpillar plant was automated as well. I love the fact that they had retained the old wood floor that was probably there when Lefty rolled off the line. I imagine the combine plant is a fairly complicated operation. 👍

    Definitely no easy task to do a complete restoration that’s why it would be heartbreaking to sell if you ever had to,I have done quite a few Tractor over the years and it always felt like a gut punch when I had to sell them but I was in a position where I had to or I would still have them!
    But You your
    Dad are doing an amazing job and that’s the way to do it and when you’re taking it out to use you’ll be confident that nothing was neglected and it should perform like a brand new Cat😀🇨🇦

    looks to me like your blaster guy should have spent a little more time blasting that rust. I hope you are using a primer/ sealer as all those dark spots are still rust and will continue to grow under your primer. Having restored dozens of tractors including a Minneapolis Moline Motrac with loader I fully understand the work involved. Keep up the good work, the end results will be worth all your efforts!

      We definitely are and everything gets a very good degreasing before we put anything on it. 👍

    You think a tractor has less parts than a car? Oh hell no, seems no mater what machine you take the surface areas that need painting usually multiplies times 5. Specially the bigger the machine tends to be. Very happy with the progress and just keep working on it. Not much left to go. Would be interesting to see the summary of money spend on Lil Lefty once it's done.

      It's been driving Dad nuts that I'm not keeping track of this project financially. That's actually been intentional from the start. On the 5T, Karl, you can bet I will definitely keep track. My honest guess right now is 15 to 20,000 including the cost of the machine. Way more than it'll probably ever be worth. 😂

    What happened to the track frame. Was probably a broken tension bolt

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you're probably right. I never really considered what could happen with the broken tensioner Bolt. Personally, I'm not quite sure, it was broken a long time ago. It looks like somebody did a field repair. My speculation is that they ran that track into something, hard. When we removed the tracks everything still had good tension on it. The rest of the track frame is in great condition. 👍

      I have seen D7 tentsion bolts do that

      @lifeafterourloss  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @wilmamcdermott3065 I bet you're right I'm going to have to keep an eye on them. Would be interesting to look at the other d4s out here and see if they have the same damage.

      Very dangerous if u dont realize and split the track

    If you use Car paint you actually don't need to prime the parts

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We learned a valuable lesson not to use this tractor paint. It will be in a upcoming video. 👍
