    Wait, a guy that gets older laptops and shows people how they can use them today? This is incredible. I always get a tad bit annoyed when people portray brand new devices as the "only" option especially with phones, because a phone that is a few years old still works perfectly today and it's a shame that people get the idea that they need to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars every couple years on a new device.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Its not that the stuff won't work, its because people tend to think they need to have the latest and greatest of everything to show off to their friends, family, co-workers, etc.

    • @Randomsae

      I know why people buy them, I just wanted to say that it was a shame that people feel a need to spend so much just for those reasons. I also was saying that it's frustrating when TH-cam videos only mention the newest devices when talking about affordability and budget devices

    I used to buy this model all the time for resale when I ran my repair business. Quick tip. This model for some reason lowers the clock speed of the processor when the battery is performing poorly. I've duplicated this error multiple times through multiple laptops and batteries. Replace the battery and you will see a huge speed improvement.

    the laptop could have been slow because dell use a propietary ac adapter that is identified by the laptop at startup. If the adapter type cannot be identified, the laptop will not run at full performance. you can easily verify this in bios at the battery section.
    I noticed this because the first time you started the laptop there was an error message saying the power adapter type is unknown

    On this model, the internal hard drive just slides right out. I bought a few extra drive caddies and I plan to load up a few hard drives with different operating systems and it should be as easy to change operating systems as it is to change games on an old cartridge console.
    I am getting a reddish tint over my screen. Is this possibly a driver issue or is it for sure the screen needing to be replaced?

    Wow that e6400 is extremly slow on Linux. My mother has been using an e6400 for over 5 years now. Prior to that it was used as a business device.
    With 4GB RAM and a 512GB SSD this laptop is still fine for office tasks, web browsing and even light photoediting. Top of the line business notebooks can last you for up to 10 ten years easily. I myself even used a d630 (top of the line as well) up to this summer. My new XPS15 might be faster when it comes to demanding tasks but doing every day tasks you barely notice any difference.

  • @TheTechyLuke

    The error that you saw when you booted up the laptop isn't usually linked to dead batteries, it could be the charger, charger socket or mobo, it means that the laptop doesn't know what type of charger is plugged in, so it probably won't charge and performance may be slower than usual. First thing to try is another charger, then check if there's any debris in the charging socket on the laptop and replace of necessary. Also check bios settings for Fast Boot under POST Behaviour (I believe that's the option), it maybe set to "Thorough" or not set at all, depending on the model, which maybe why POST is slow on this

    Hi, it is interesting, the idea of upgrading this laptop, I also have it. It was given to me by a neighbor in 2018 to repair due to a 1/3 of the screen being shaded. The cost made him want to buy a new laptop rather than patching up an old one. I know this video is already of age, but I am however, interested in knowing if you did the upgrades and what parts did you replace, Or point me towards whatever videos you have of the upgrading. Perhaps now in 2022 I can upgrade something to make it perform better. Thx.

    What type of power adapter are you using? When I first got my E6500 second-hand the only charger I had laying around was a 65 watt one. With it the machine was incredibly slow, since the BIOS was limiting the power consumption and thus reducing the performance to a crawl. After I got a 130W charger everything has been flying since.
    You should learn to read what the computer reports. It literally says connect XX watt adapter or greater for optimal performance, a.k.a no throttling.
    All of the upgrades that you are planning will be rendered completely useless and will have no effect on performance unless you change the power supply to an original Dell one with atleast 90W of power like the PA-3E(90W) or PA-4E(130W) families, which were original for the model and have a blue LED ring around the connector for the laptop.
    P.S You should've went with the 15 inch E6500, since you can have the option for a, let me say it this way, absolutely gorgeous and f*cking sweet UltraSharp 1920x1200 screen.

      I can't really say because I could not afford one :( . I thought they would make the hardware customizable like the T470, I was planning to buy the lowest tier version hoping it would be ~$1000. Since they ended up only offering a single config with less than impressive specs for nearly 2 grand, I had to pass on it.

    Got one. Maxed much of the hardware... 64Gb SSD drive (main drive), replaced DVD drive with a HD caddy (with a "reasonable" 230Gb HDD) also have an external E-sata caddy for backup purposes... lots of larger drives from old PC builds, so all good...Memory upgrade to full (8gb). New bigger battery. Docking station (sadly not the USB3 version).
    Slightly overclocked (around 3-5% ish).
    I use it to do audio processing and music production.
    Hasn't had an catastrophic issue with just simply "not" since I brought it over 6 years ago.
    To be fair, it's the younger i5 version than the model shown .... Running Ubuntu Studio.
    44.1khz 24 bit audio (via usb)... Threw around 21 tracks of audio and vst at it....
    No issues.
    Am thinking of getting a bigger secondary HDD (maybe another SSD if I'm feeling cute) and upgrading to a 48khz or 96khz 24bit USB audio interface to improve audio quality.
    Would like to get a desktop ideally, but need portability currently so it's quick and easy to pack up....
    Still a good computer, but you do have to pick your battles with it.
    Video editing, for example...
    Just painful.
    DTP - Photoshop style fun, great.
    Rendering 3D? Nope, unless you want to take five times longer to render than even a pretty modest desktop.
    General use, low system demand games, typing stuff, surfing net... Just fine.
    Quite like the keyboard also - but have been looking to get the backlit version...

    I've owned the 6410, 6420, 6530 and so on. These days I am rocking a quad core 5491, a step up from my 7470, but I love Dell latitude and Precision laptops. Yeah they might look old school, but at least you've got the connectivity, upgrade path. I currently have 16 gigs of ddr4 2666 ram in my 5491. It's also technically faster (4.2 ghz in turbo boost) That's 200 more mhz over my XPS workstation that just turned two back in October. So there's lots of potential with these, especially on the used market. Plus these things are built like tanks. Especially the 64 and 6500 series. I loved my 6420 and 6530. TrI metal construction, heck you don't need a handgun for protection. just lug one of the around, ain't nobody wanting that thrown at their head! Thinkpads didn't have nothing on that vintage of latitudes that's for sure. Lastly nobody ever seems to mention this point but long before you could get recovery software for Thinkpads online, The dell recovery app has it! No need to carry disks around. Just pick up a cheap USB thumb drive, download the app and the way you go. Grab your drivers and easy does it. Granted I keep the Windows 7 recovery image in backup so I can skip that step, but it doesn't get much easier. Even HP's cloud recovery while slick I admit doesn't offer the ease or flexibility. Dell has recovery options going back to at least the 6420. To find the drivers for a t420 you've got to hunt all over Lenovos website and good luck getting your Windows installer. Better have a wallet for that. So that's why I choose dell. That and their pro support is fantastic. but if your a student needing a cheap laptop your not buying new and so having easy access to the tools you need is important.

    These are great looking machines, and mostly a joy to assemble/disassemble! I've got a few M4500's so can confirm there are early generation i5/i7 models with this case design (bonus that many Precision models have Quadro (sp?) graphica). I watch very few channels, people, and subscribe to less than 10. After hearing your Linux comments I am subscribed, The fanboys are scary; it's obviously okay not liking Linux (though most have no clue what computers and o/s's are), but they seem to have no knowledge about privacy and security issues (or just don't care, which leads back to not getting so judgey/emotional about M$/Linux/technology). Thanks for well done presentation!

    that sluggishness could be the low amount of ram or maybe a trouble between the OS and the SSD? I've seen laptops of this category being this slow with basics tasks only when there is a thermal issue, when windows is too bloated (doesn't apply to you this time) or when the HDD is about to die

    I'd start by upgrading the CPU to at least a T7600 Core 2 Duo.
    The battery is probably not dead. For Dell laptops, the AC adapter uses a 3rd data pin and needs to be recognized as genuine for the battery to charge, the lack of an official charger also limits the CPU to its slowest multiplier (usually around 1ghz on Core 2 based CPU's) although booting into Linux might help to override that limit or you could also use Throttlestop in Windows.

    • @strangeplains2466
      @strangeplains2466 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sergiy Botsman the core 2 duo t7600 is a socket m and the processor in this laptop is a socket p, plus the p8700 is good enough for web browsing. The 1gb of ram is most likely holding the system back and the fact that the charger he's using isn't recognized by the system, making it run slower than usual.

      I heard the d630 could support 8gb of ram, my d620 can support 4gb with something limiting it to 3.2gb. I upgraded the GMA to the Quadro NVS 110M. What chipset is your Mom's PC?

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the NVS 160m combined with the t8300 so pretty high and stuff back in the day...
      In theory the d630 supports 8gbs of RAM but the RAM would be more expensive then the entire notebook. ;D
      Funny thing is: I had to do exactly the opposite thing. I downgraded from the NVS Quadro in my d630 to the Intel GMA. The previous NVS 135m overheated up to the point where it finally stopped working. After reflowing the Nvidia GPU it worked for a few weeks until it failed entirely. Since that was a common problem with d630s I had to downgrade to the Intel GMA...

      I have an hp620 laptop with a dual Core t4500 with those GMA graphics and it can play 720p without a sweat, there must be some kind of issue with his. Maybe the lack of ram?

    • @LloydLynx
      @LloydLynx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was using thermal pads for the GPU's that might be the overheating issues since I tried using thermal pads and also got heat issues, I had to replace it with thermal paste, now the highest I see is 160F with 130F for light Internet browsing. Also if you haven't yet update the BIOS, those models had issues with inconsistent fan speed causing cracks in the solder since dell switched to lead free solder at the time of release for those laptops. GMA is fine with thermal pads though.

    So you can get Dell E6400 dirt cheap on ebay. How does this compare with it's thinkpad contemporary T400? I would think E6400 is better buy than similar T400 given better ergonomic design, more connectors than T400, usb drives horizontal instead of vertical as in T400, back-lit keyboard, and battery pack that doesn't bulge out as much as T400. Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 memory (cheap), and you have a solid laptop still good for vast array of tasks. Much better than buying some junk consumer grade laptop for few hundred dollars at big box stores!

I find that TH-cam is one of the worst formats for feedback. Trust me, most of the commentators wouldn't say what they on here to your face. My E6400 has the integrated Nvidia GPU and it runs hotter than the sun, even with fresh paste. doesn't need shimming, they at least fixed it so it didn't. but, once you fix Windows to use unsigned 64-bit drivers and use i8kfancontrol, plus the fn-shift-15324 trick, it runs cool enough to play some light games (killing floor 1 runs fine at 1280x800 on it, last I tried in 2015.)
    So be glad it has the integrated chipset graphics and not the higher-end model with the blast furnace for a GPU.

Our laptops in the Army National Guard were setup this way most of the time so the laptop keyboards and touchpads didn't get much use other than when we undocked them and took them to meetings or the field.

      When you use the 65W PSU with a lot of these Latitudes it'll do that. Same with unofficial or just unrecognized adaptors. Generally speaking the 90W is the minimum you want to go with for these Latitudes, though the 120W or higher are generally better. I use the overkill 240W PSUs with my Precision M4700, which will work with these E6400s as well.

    • @therobster6069
      @therobster6069 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 65w adapters are fine for all latitudes with intel graphics, but any with dedicated will complain if not using a 90w. I know this from experience as I had an intel E6420, then upgraded the mobo to an nvidia board, then it didn't like 65w adapters anymore.

      No problem, although it seems as the power adapter problem only exists with the E series, as my D630 with the 135m and my D600 with radeon 9000 pro don't care what ac adapter is used, it just charges slower.

    You'll never see any improvement in performance between the existing P8700 and a T9900 except in benchmarks. In everyday usage it will seem exactly the same. The slowdown on that specific laptop isn't the processor (unless it's thermally throttling). An additional gig of ram or so might help it, but I doubt it. For it to be running that slow with an SSD and something as light as Lubuntu tells me there is some other hardware issue present. That system as it stands should have no problems playing back 1080P-60 video without any upgrade at all. My pastor has a P8600 in his laptop and it has no issues playing back 1080P-60 videos either, and that is with a slow spinning rust hard drive and all of the OEM bloat still installed. It does have 2 gigs of ram though, but it's running Windows 10. .
    I have a laptop with the exact same chipset and only noticed minimal performance increase in day to day tasks after upgrading it from a T3400 to a T9900. My pastor has a P8600 in his laptop and it has no issues playing back 1080P-60 videos either. Just for the heck of it I took my daughters laptop with a T7500 (slower than the P8700), cut it back to 1 gig of ram, and it had no problems with 1080P-60 youtube videos. It has the GL40 chipset (slower than the GM45) and only used 550 megs of ram running Knoppix from a flash drive. That's telling me that there is something else wrong with that laptop.
    I would update the BIOS before I did anything else though. It has version A20 which is quite old compared to the latest A34 available for it.

    • @AAComputersandTechnology
      @AAComputersandTechnology  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm interesting. Do you think the CPU might be throttling? It is probably time to replace the thermal paste (which I will do during the upgrade video). Hopefully a thermal paste replacement, BIOS update, and more RAM makes a difference.

    • @cee128d
      @cee128d 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Enable the thermal sensors and run a cpu stress test to see if it's overheating or throttling. If you can't get them working in Lubuntu, install 32bit Windows 7 on it (you won't need to activate it) long enough to do it. I would do this BEFORE you change the TIM that way you have something to compare the results to. It was quite common back then for the cpu heatsink block to not fit as tightly on the processor as it needed to which caused a lot of them to run way too hot. Compaq, HP, Gateway, and even Dell were notorious for that. Quite often you needed to place a copper shim between the cpu die and the heatsink to get the necessary contact for proper cooling. Some would everheat to the point of desoldering some of the contacts between the sockets and chips and the motherboards requiring a complete teardown to reflow the solder. I've done more of those than I ever want to do.

      speaking about reliability, i can spend years with the same windows instalation without any problems, hell i usualy reinstall windows only when i get a faster hard drive or i buy a new computer, but with linux? last instalation lasted me less than 5 logins and after that it broke down and i wasnt able to login again, it wasnt even showing the login screen, when booting it would just get stuck and a black screen, and if you got to the terminal screen it would show a lot of errors... and its not the first time it happened, without messing with the system or anything like that, just sudden death of the OS, so for me windows is the most reliable

I believe you are either using the root account or sudo command without knowing what you're doing since you almost can't do anything to make the system broken without root access. I'm not gonna shit talk about Windows cause we all know its full of bloatware since 8.

      Yes, Linux was so better in regards to usability that this week it took me an hour to get my Nvidia GTX1060 working on Linux Mint and booting to GUI. Thankfully I had a laptop I could use for researching fixes as well as onboard Intel graphics that I could set as the primary boot GPU otherwise it would have taken even longer. Windows 10 automagically finds pretty much any hardware you plug in.
      When it comes to gaming Linux pretty much always benchmarks slower than Windows due to poor drivers.
      Windows is rock solid reliable and has been for many years since Windows 7.

    Note about the non original warning at the boot, if the laptop doesn't recognize the charger it will run on base energy-saving clock all time without boosting to full speed even if you cry and beg for it (the reason it felt sluggish and the problems with 720p) AND you won't be able to charge the battery. Check it while booted with cpupower on the terminal (IIRC that is the utility for that) Which is why I suggest doing a search before buying old dell laptops. AFAIK Thinkpads don't have this problem.
