eBay Finds: $90 Lenovo Thinkpad X220t Unboxing and First Look

  • I have heard / read a lot of good things about the X220 series of Lenovo Thinkpads. When I came across a X220T on eBay in very good condition my curiosity compelled me to pull the trigger. Today we are going to take a look at a x220t that I bought off eBay for $120 later reduced to $90 after I told the seller there was a supervisor password on the system. Specs include an intel I5 2520M @ 2.5Ghz, 4GB DDR3, 1366x768 12.5" IPS display, and for testing I added a 120GB SSD.
    Although this laptop its small, this laptop packs a punch. Its dual core I5 makes it great for web browsing, playing back videos, and writing papers, and the 4GB of RAM is enough for typical multitasking. Personally my favorite thing about the X220t is the IPS display. This is one of the best displays I have seen so far on an older thinkpad. It might even be enough of an advantage over my T430 to make me switch to the x220t.

    I use an x200T for my notes, it has the digitizer but no touchscreen making it perfect for writing notes. Its a bit slow for a lot of things, but I upgraded to 4Gb of RAM and added a 120Gb SSD, and it is darn near perfect. Great conversation starter too, everyone wants to know about it

      Actually, I used to have an X200t and an X220t and both can be used with your fingers. If it's not working than it's either broken or missing a driver. They are fine laptops and I would have loved to keep the X220t when I left that company (given it's age) but the low res screen did start to bother me for being my daily driver.

      Hans Roes The touchscreen was an option on the x200T, mine has just the digitizer

      Mine doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, it has Intel X4500M Integrated graphics, that are paired with a Core 2 Duo. Not great for anything more intensive than web browsing, but perfect for taking notes on. I don't think they offered the x200T with a dedicated graphics card.

    You turned me on to the Lenovo x220 and I found an i5 for next to nothing at a Goodwill outlet store with an excellent battery. I had to replace the cracked screen, and jacked up the ram to 6Gb. The SSD made a huge speed difference (took your advice on the SSD as well). My buddy admired it so much that I sold it on the spot. He loves it and uses the X220 in his business. And, I have found another one it "like new" condition.
    The market seems flooded with them at times, and these are fast and light laptops. Thanks for the excellent video.

    When upgrading, DON'T remove the CMOS battery, otherwise you can't boot anymore without the Supervisor PW

    • @cmcm6676
      @cmcm6676 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I have a t420 with supervisor password, which i don't know, and i removed the cmos battery when cleaning it and it booted fine after that, it did not ask for a password.
      It's better if you buy one without but you can find ones with password at a lower price because no one wants them. I'll put Coreboot on mine so password is going to go anyway..

    • @elukok
      @elukok 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I dont think you can put coreboot on if the password is enabled. You should rather check with the documentation. I believe it is required for the password to be disabled for the flashing to go well.

    • @amdintelxsniperx

      you can flash a new bios on it after clearing cmos it should over write the password and strip it

    • @elukok
      @elukok 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clearing CMOS doesn't clear the password. What i would try is what Poebat linked on reddit with fusing the eeprom storing the password. Probably the safest solution that could work, although still with a lot of risk of burning or damaging something.

    It's An ter gos, not An te gross. Pronounced as An tear gos (as in tear a piece of paper). Accent is on the second syllable.
    The box is like that because the seller cut a larger box down to fit instead of adding a lot of packing materials. Makes it cheaper to ship.

    The X60 Tablet is so much cuter like a pocket computer growing up. Maybe I need 3 to make a pretty one, but it's worth it for me. My X230 can do the other things where the X60 is slow.

  • @camelCased
    @camelCased 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I got used X230 recently, and mine has 6 cell battery but it held 4 hours of streaming 1080p youtube videos. Also, I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro and it accepted the existing Windows 7 Pro license key. Nice machine, I'll use it as my travel notebook after upgrading to an SSD (but those things are pricey now).
    There are some youtube videos with tutorial for removing the password. It's somewhat tricky, involves running the device and shorting some pins of the EEPROM chip , so BIOS can't read the password, and then removing the short circuit and entering new - blank - password. You have to be very careful to find the right chip and the right pins. Also, the trick won't work on all models. But it might be worth trying, if only you can be 100% sure that you have the right chip.

    I bought one for my college classes this year. My hp stream died on me and i wanted something cheap and reliable. My brother has be using a T420 for almost 10 years now and it is still running to this day! i got a x220t for $140 on amazon Refurbished with 160gb ssd + free shipping. i bought a samsung 960 msata 256 gb drive for boot and software for ($80), 1tb Seagate Baracuda drive for storage ($40) , a extra 4gb of ddr3 ram for ($19) and a extra battery (19). i ended up selling the 160gb ssd for $30 so after that i paid a grand total of ($268). i doubt you can find a laptop with those specs for less than $1000. thinkpads are the best laptops in the world and the fact you can get them for cheap is unreal!

      It's only one lane so it would not be that useful. But you should put a USB card in there (even if it won't get max 3.0 speeds) just for structural integrity, because the palmrest is known to crack with an empty slot.

    When comparing weights realize that the tablet versions will have additional weight due to the extra weight of the touch screen. I have some X200's, X201's and an X201T. The T is indeed much heavier than the non-T (Tablet) versions even for those very similar models. So comparing your T-series to an X-series tablet it is understandable they are closer in weight.
    Enjoyed your video.

    I paid $90 for a similar (well used, but still in good shape) x220 laptop about half a year ago. Mine has some minor cracks in the case, and the battery retention clips were broken (A new battery fixed most of that). I replaced the 320gb hard disk with a 256gb SSD, and added a second (80gb) SSD in the unused miniPCIE slot and installed Linux Mint. The machine now boots at warp speed, and is a perfect travel mate. (Mine is the laptop version, not the tablet).

    Just a few questions...I literally ask these on every Thinkpad x220 video. I'm used to a 14 inch 4:3 tablet PC. Will this be too small in terms of height for sketching comfortably on krita or MyPaint? I don't want to buy this thinking it's smaller than I expected. Would a Fujitsu lifebook t901 be better? Maybe a Thinkpad x201?

    These X220Ts work nicely with an mSATA drive - my secondary laptop is using an EVO 250gb atm. Throw a 1TB in the normal slot for data, and you've got a snappy system with large storage.
    I'd rather move to an X230T sooner or later to get USB3, though.

    You need to watch the rubber feet to the left and right side of the keyboard. They come off, and the replacement parts don't have the little pins that stick into the casing to keep them there, so you have to end up super gluing replacement pieces.

    The tablet version is heavier than the non-tablet versions. I have an X220T and an X220i and there is quite a bit of difference in weight. The non-tablet versions weigh about 3.3 lbs with the 6 cell battery. The hinge mechanism and the extra glass on the tablet version add to the weight.

    Hi, one reason why the Laptop doesn't fit in the Docking-Station could be that the battery is not an original Lenovo one. They use all round Li-Ion cells so they have to make the case thicker.
    The Original one's use prismatic cells for the part under the Laptop and round cells in the protruding part. At least on my X201 Tablet the battery is constructed that way

    I am not sure if you ever figured out how to disable the trackpad since this is an old video. But you could always run: xinput list , then xinput disable (enter touchpad id here ex="xinput disable 19") to disable the touchpad. This will only disable it until you logout or shutdown though. You can set up a script to run it automatically for you though on login if you want.

      @ Climatee: Or you could get a X200 (a previous model) and install Linux Mint 64 bit XFCE on it and Libre Office. Pretty much all you need. However if you really need a touchpad AND the small formfactor of the X series, you should get the X220 then. The X200 has trackpoint only. So if you don't like using only a trackpoint you should get the X220 then. However the X200 has a 16:10 screen which offers you more display size headroom and much closer to the 4:3 resolution of your ipad. It pretty much combines the horizontal wideness of 16:9 and the vertical space of 4:3, using the best of both worlds. The optimal computer monitor format in my opinion. The X220 has a 16:9 screen which is a terrible monitor format for computers.

    Oh the x220t/230t laptop. Oh how I dislike working on. I actually work in the depot that repairs these units. Fairly strait forward but always having broken plastics from general use. The lcd/lcd cover is the worst. Its interesting how good the condition is. Likely was sent in close to the end of the warranty for repair. Main issues for this unit was no video and touch screen issues. On the no video its usually best to replace the lcd, lcd cable and sb all at once to fix. It has a issue with shorts causing no video. the amount of parts I have put in to fix and ended up having to do all at once. So glad I don't have to work on them any more!!

    I purchased 2 ThinkPad T420s recently and noticed that while the keyboard are okay, they definitely are not as good as everyone says they are. I even purchased 2 brand new keyboards for them. They are nothing like the keyboards of the older Windows 95 era ones. They are mushy and require lots of force to make register a key press, it is not that bad as it does feel solid but typing for long sessions puts more strain on my hands as often keys are not registered with out typing with excessive force. While they do have a good amount of key travel, it it made useless by the fact that the rubber domes snap right at the beginning giving no travel time before the tactile bump. Overall the keyboards on these feel more like a crappy old value rubber dome desktop keyboard that you would have bundled in for free with a cheap desktop PC, the $10 Logitech keyboard I bought on Amazon is better. From experience I can say that Clevo P150SM and P650RE have far better keyboards with roughly the same amount of travel, a less mushy feel, and require less force to actuate a key. They feel more linear like a mechanical keyboard but still with a tactile bump at the end compared to the more binary on/off bump at the top of the T420s key press. A test I always do when judging a keyboard is playing osumania with them, when using a good laptop keyboard I can score roughly 97-100% accuracy or 99-100% with Cherry MX Blues. With the T420s I often miss notes and score on average 80% accuracy. I am not trying to say these keyboards are awful because they sure are better than most, they are definitely not great keyboards though, there are other laptops out there with far better keyboards.

    Just got a x220 (non t) with an i5 2540m and 8gb of ram, also no HDD for only 50€, it's a good little machine. And for a great price. Only problem is that the battery is almost dead and has a little crack on the case, but nothing to be concerned about, and some scratches.

    I am well aware of how the i5 2520m performs as I have a Thinkpad T420 with that CPU. The only reason I have upgraded to something newer instead of keeping with the T420 is that I needed a better GPU for gaming otherwise I would still be on the T420. I also have an i5 3570k@4.2ghz on my desktop so yeah the second Gen core i series works quite well for basic computing tasks and can even handle gaming as long as they are paired with a decent GPU unlike the NVS 4200m in my T420 which is essentially a Nvidia 520m on the Geforce side of things.
    Also if you havewn't figured it out yet you should be able to disable the trackpad in the BIOS its what I have done with my T420 as I preferred to use the Trackpoint personally or a real mouse.

    Besides getting the X220t, I strongly recommend checking out the hp elitebook 2760p, almost the same as X220t, but come with a much cheaper price. Also, come with magnesium structure inside, and easy to find on ebay, same 2nd gen i series processors.

    Funny, I just picked up the same 2 in 1. It works great, very impressed with the touch screen and the stylus capabilities. Mine didn't come with a hard drive, so I just threw a spare drive in with windows 10 and it works great, all drivers automatically loaded and the system was ready to go upon windows 10 install. I plan to put a SSD in it in the future though, but right now its fine as is, it boots pretty quick and had 4GB RAM and a 250GB HDD. Ahh yes, the same issue with the docking station I found. I figured my T430 docking station would work but it does not and I'm not going to modify it to fit, I found a docking station for the X220t for $25 and ordered that. The X201 docking station doesn't work with the X220T either. Not sure why Lenovo changed the setup on the X220T but I now have plenty of docking stations HAHA!!
    I also just picked up a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, 10", I believe one of the first tablets that Lenovo made, unfortunately it had Android 3.2 or something like that on it :(. I'm hoping to find a way to install windows on it, not liking an OS that old. It works great, but don't like an OS that isn't supported any longer and very lacking in options. It came with a folio/keyboard combo dock and it was dead when it arrived, after charging for about 6 hours it came back to life and has worked fine since. Paid $35 for it, seems to work very well with the exception of the Android OS. Its quite heavy, almost 1/2 inch thick. Looks like there's an empty slot for possibly an EMMC type SSD. It has 32GB of storage already, and if a windows install isn't possible that EMMC slot is useless anyhow LOL.

      Its a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, 10" model, type: 1838-25U. Has Android 3.1 on it. Quite an interesting tablet. Weights about 3lbs 3.5oz including the leather folio/keyboard case. Pretty heavy for a tablet. Seems pretty quick. Has a dual core 1ghz processor, 2gb ram.

      Browningate 2nd gen and 3rd gen processors are very similar, so ivy bridge might have slightly improved performance but not by much.
