    the ultrabay battery in the T60 is going to get used more than the original battery; it will wear out before the actual battery does. Keep this in mind when you get the battery and do look into that issue on the thinkpads.com forum and elsewhere.
    The password is stored on the EEPROM, yes, but you can't UV erase it. it's a small tiny serial ROM chip that needs to be replaced in order to remove the resolve the issue. You might be able to clear the password in Linux directly, but I doubt it, do check into that. as always, don't forget to turn off Computrace permanently on both the T410 (if you ever get into the BIOS) and the T60 if you haven't done so already.
    The one thing I don't like about the first-gen i3/5/7 Thinkpads is they run HOT. the heatsink is shared between the iGPU and the CPU on the same area of the contact area and that doesn't do anything good for thermals for either of them. if you do install Windows on this, make sure to get TPFanControl going. same on the T60.

    • @AAComputersandTechnology
      @AAComputersandTechnology  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I was really surprised that they had designed the ultrabay battery to be 100% depleted before it switches over to the main battery. At this rate the ultrabay battery will probably only last for a year or so since I completely drain it on a daily basis (which is disappointing since they are kinda pricey). It seems that the T60 does not run too hot but the T410 definitely gets pretty toasty!

    • @SudosFTW
      @SudosFTW 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep, so if you send it off with a copy of 7 or 10, be sure to get it going with tpfancontrol, the INI settings are pretty straightforward but ON manual speed 7 all the time seems to be the trick to keeping temps low.

      @therappermcjosiah4850 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are extremely good but I'm not sure about doing animation on them. If your talking about 2D animation, that is totally possible, but 3D animation might be slow do too lack of GPU power. The CPU's in these laptops are faster than what you can get in a brand new laptop for the same price but the GPU's aren't too great. If you where to look for one of these, look one with dedicated graphics, like the Nvidia NVS 3100M graphics. Still crappy graphics but they might be faster than the Intel HD Graphics in these laptops.

    Can't wait to see the teardown for the thermal compound. I have a W510 that I unsed for a while, but now it won't even complete a boot into Win7 without rebooting. The CPU/GPU heat are known issues on it, so I definitely want to get in there and clean them both off and put some new and better compound on. After that, I'll probably just pull the HD and throw and SSD in and install from scratch (it would sometimes boot into Safe Mode, but then even that failed, so an attempt at Repair failed over and over) to avoid any corruption issues.
    Which bay battery did you get for the T60? I have a bunch of T60/61/R60/61/W500s that could use one to swap between them as needed.

    holy crap you got a amazing deal on that t410 I spent £130 for mine with a i5 529m 4gb of ram it came with no dedicated gpu but it did come with the 1440 x 900 screens which are rare. but I did get a one off cpu that was not sold with the laptop a Intel core is 640m then I also buffed the ram to 8gb next year when it's my birthday in January I will be getting the parts for the quadro motherboard so I can player some casual games like rust legacy and minecraft at higher frames. I'm also getting a solid state drive for it for Christmas which will give new life to the laptop. in total I think it have spent well over £200 on it so I'm very shocked on how an earth you found that laptop pretty much maxed out for such a low price.
    great video btw!

      Think pads are awesome due to there high level of quality over other windows laptops, they are incredibly durable. For example, AA has a T60 which is 10 years old and its still usable in today. An other example, I have a high quality Dell Inspiron 15 7559. Its very powerful laptop but due to the build quality and the screen flex is so bad that a little pressure makes my keyboard mark the screen, I got a think pad x230 to throw into my back pack instead.

    when I was on the lenovo website downloading windows drivers I saw an iso for resetting hardware passwords. you may want to take a look. I got mine for 56 bucks after selling a weak 2015 ideapad for 55, so I basically paid shipping. I specced it out w 8gb ram(it's limited to pc3-10600), an i7 640m, Bluetooth 4.0, and a dual-band Intel 6300 WiFi. if you add the accessories I bought.. a dock, ultrabay caddy, ssd, HDD, USB 3.0 expresscard(I recommend this one highly) etc... I spent around $350 on it.
    Not a bad machine for the cost. I'm a bit jealous of your dedicated graphics mobo and 1440x900 screen. Mine was a T410i with integrated only and the lower res screen. I'm now dual booting Ubuntu MATE and Win 10 on separate drives. I was able to activate windows with the win 7 key on my machine, but it mostly sits unused in the ultrabay on an old 1tb drive I use for storage.
    The T410 is a solid machine at top spec. There's a whole playlist of videos about my process with it on my channel. I recommend getting the maintenance manual PDF, and the wifi, Bluetooth, and usb3 upgrades were cheap,($10-$15 each) easily done, and a nice improvement.

    I bought the most amazing 12" X200 Thinkpad for £75 on ebay. It has Windows 7 Pro (activated). I wasn't expecting much, but it's great as a writing laptop.
    Has a great keyboard (no chiclet keys and nice travel and bounce) and I've managed to put all my writing programs on it: Scrivener, The Novel Factory, FocusWriter, Word XP (I've even put the Office Assistants back on) etc.
    I won't let it connect to the internet without a lot of trouble (resetting the router, sitting directly next to the router because I use homeplugs, not wifi). Hence, no distracting youtube. If I want that I have to change computers!
    For £75!!!

  • @RoloisRight
    @RoloisRight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yep, years ago I ran into the SVP problem. Back then, the only option was an overpriced programmer from ebay or having the hardware (bus pirate) to dump the info off the ATMEL 24RF08 and neither was practical (not worth the money) at the time. Now that we live in the age of Arduino and other cheap microcontrollers, I'm sure there's far cheaper (and simpler) ways to reset that password. I bet even the programmers that were expensive back in the day are probably dirt cheap by now. Nice laptop, good video. I can't believe you haven't removed that sticker off the T60!

      Yeah, If I really find myself needing to get into the BIOS I may try desoldering the eeprom and messing around with it but at this moment in time I really do not have the need to. Haha, the sticker seals in the freshness :p

    • @RoloisRight
      @RoloisRight 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Arduino method I linked just before your reply doesn't seem to require desoldering. Of course, unless you're already working with Arduino, it may not be any easier if you need to buy one and the supplies and learn how to use it, but I'm sure you could find someone already into it that could help locally. Only if you need to ;)

    The Nvidia Quadro 3100M is really nice. My T410 has switchable graphics which lets you chose between Intel graphics media accelerator 5700MHD or the Nvidia GPU or using the Nvidia optimus mode where the Nvidia graphics only kicks in for 3D performance and Intel graphics runs most of the time. I could play "Half Life 2" and "Amnesia" really well under Linux with it. So you can definitely play games with it too that are a bit older. Sadly Optimus mode only works under windows at the time i was using my T410 for that while under Linux you gotta set it manually. Not sure if that was fixed later.

    These things aren't bad, I'm using a T510, best keyboard on any laptop I've ever owned. Though don't give these too much credit. The T400 and T500 series ThinkPads have a CPU issue that causes a high pitched noise to be emitted from the CPU. Mine has that problem, it's headache inducing but for some reason it only happens when I use Windows. Using a CPU loader reduces the sound but that just slows everything down. Moved over to Xubuntu and problem solved.

    Several problems (or design flaws) with the T410/420.series. First Lenovo gimped the SATA bus limiting it to SATA 1 when natively it should be SATA2. Second the installed a Display Port out instead of HDMI out which would have been much more useful. The intended market would be considerably more likely to need to connect to a TV over HDMI than a display port so the traveller needed to carry an adapter. Thirdly, instead of separate headphone and mic jacks they used a convoluted multi jack with was very unreliable. Again it required a special, hard to find, and expensive adapter to use both at the same time or to use the port as an imput. It also wouldn't recognize inputs like a mic or line in automatically or even remember one so you were forced to go thru a lengthy and complicated process to get it to work. They also had a lot of problems with the cpu fans failing. These are some of the reasons why I bought a new screen for my old Toshiba Satellite A305 to replace my T410

      I did not know that the SATA interface was limited to SATA I speeds. I will have to do some more research on that, that is interesting. The only thing that you mentioned which I really do not like is the fact that they went with display port. I agree with you 100%, HDMI would have been the more pragmatic choice, especially for a business / work class laptop. The multi-jack is annoying but not really an issue since my sister does not use headphones / microphones. However, I am actually rethinking buying a T420 in the future because of that. My line of work requires that I have a dedicated Microphone and Headphone jack. I guess I could just go with a USB sound card if it really comes down to it but I would prefer that the system have dedicated integrated jacks. Thanks for the insight!

    I´ve got an Acer Aspire 7720Z for free because the graphics card wasn´t working anymore and you know what? I´ve put the geforce 8400m gs into the oven for like 20 minutes at 130° and it worked again!!! So far so good but i changed it to a 9600m gs so i can play a bit of games... It also has a higher resolution screen with 1440:900 and looks like new! The rest of it is a core 2 duo, a 500gb seagate drive with surprisingly fast write and read speeds with like 130MB/s and a Core 2 Duo.

    I had one of these! It was my second Thinkpad, after my T61p. Not a bad laptop, but I remember the speaker grilles filling up with little flecks of random stuff and being impossible to clean. One speaker grille eventually just gave up and fell off one day, I guess the laptop got too hot and the adhesive lost contact with the chassis. @~@;
    Now I've got a T440p and I love it. Also got an X220t I use for art but that stays in the closet most of the time. Still got my T61p but I was letting a family member borrow it and they blew up the graphics card playing some garbage MMORPG. :C

    • @tmcclelland47
      @tmcclelland47 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope. If it's anything like pretty much every computer out there now, the password will be persistent across BIOS flashes. Really the only way he could get rid of it would be a mainboard replacement.

    • @TheIdiotPlays
      @TheIdiotPlays 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tmcclelland47 you CAN buy a flasher, and google the chip and flash it. But i don't recommend to try, i tried it with my acer and it didnt end well. (it had a corrupted bios)

    A) At the risk of sounding like Capt. Obvious .. could you contact the seller and simpily ask them if they know the PW? ... they may say "oh yeah .. I forgot that. .. the password is "
    B) Maybe its the Linux fan in me but is there any chance you could dualboot? ... I mean with that amount of space, your sister could have Windows when she needs it but a simple reboot and menu selection (grub of course) and she can have the chance to see what Linux is like (I will leave my Ubuntu .. mainly Unity opinions out of this, at the moment, lol)

    • @AAComputersandTechnology
      @AAComputersandTechnology  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The seller knew about the supervisor password because It was listed as having one in the product description. They do not know the supervisor password unfortunately. Knowing my sister, I am pretty sure a dual boot configuration would just be a waste as she would never use the Linux partition :| . Thanks for the suggestions!

    i sprayed electronics duster in the fan port and spun the fan and rebooted it and it works fine.
    cloned the hard drive from my other t410 with linux mint 20.1 and put it in the 'parts only t410 and now i have to buy another t410 for parts as the first t410 works just fine and i am posting this from it.

      That's what I thought when I discovered my second hand ThinkPad T61 had such a password. But these laptops actually use a separate chip to store that password, so that won't help.

    • @cee128d
      @cee128d 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not on Thinkpads. There is no way to remove them without the original password. One of the reasons they are so cherished for business use as the password can't be defeated and you only have 3 unsuccessful attempts in a row before you are locked out permanently. That's one of the reasons I didn't buy this when I saw it listed. That and what I mentioned in my previous comment about the serious design flaws it has.

    I paid 67 dollars recently for a dell latitude e6410 which is bassically the dell equivalant of the t410 because it has the same quadro 3100m and an i5 520m.

    • @jackj3596
      @jackj3596 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seemed to work fine and it also came with a bios password that stopped me from selecting a boot device, so I pulled out my dell latitude e6400 (the older model in the series) and popped in a 500gb hdd and installed Windows 7 64 bit. Since both models had bassically the same exact bios I was able to swap it back into the e6410 and it works fine.

      In my opinion Dell Latitudes are mor durable and better built than the thinkpads, (especially the D-Series Laptops) but they went down hill when the Dell Latitude Exx20 series hit he market. I concider the E6410 the last true Dell Latitude because of its look and build quality, nothing can beat a Pannisonic Tough Book line of computers.
