Here's how to use this video to its optimum: watch it once just looking at the video. Then, sit with your bike and follow along with what he's saying. Finally, watch it with tools and do what he's saying. You'll get a lot out of it if you just take your time and move slowly rather than getting freaked out. Soon enough, you'll have a working derailleur and being able to do it on your own next time. That is the sign of an informative video!

*Great bike for the price, **Latest.Bike** shifts well. Needed to fine tune gears and brakes. The big tires seem to mow over anything.*

Thank you! You made my first bike repair possible! I just got a new Trek as my first road bike and the chain was rubbing the front derailleur when I shifted into the highest gear. Followed your instructions and it’s fixed!

Saved me a trip to the bike shop. Only thing I would add is it helps to loosen both H-L adjustment screws for full reset to max range of motion. Then tighten clockwise as needed

  • @2nd-place

This video is so much better than the others because it explains the tension settings while making the adjustments. This is what kept screwing me up. Sometimes it would move too far, and other times it wouldn’t move at all. I figured it was a tension thing but starting out with none and then moving on helped me to dial it in. Thanks!

I used to watch so many guides about this and they never really worked out perfectly.
They always had left some steps away or didnt explain it as good as this did.
The 1mm on lowest gear advice was the best possible and now my bike shifts as good as possible! I almost gave up and went to a mechanic, thanks for saving me a few pennies

Absolutely great video explaining everything I needed for the front derailleur! I would recommend this video to anyone! Thank you so very much for taking the time to post this video. My front derailleur was rubbing the chain and this gave me all the information I needed to fix it.
    A+ would watch again.

Thank you so much! Race tomorrow and the LBS' adjustments made the front derailleur rub the top of the derailleur cage. Thanks to your video I was able to make at least the necessary adjustments tonight before the race!

I watched a million front derailleur videos, and this was the most concise and easiest to understand. Park Tools video is also good but the clockwise visuals in this video I believe is what helped me ultimately.

Yes! Forget all the rest this video is simple and straightforward. I was ready to go into the shop and wait a week but decided to try one more video. I’m glad this was the one I chose. My old Ultegra is back to buttery smooth shifting. Thank you very much!

I like the "be patient" part. I'll give it another try. lol. (BTW, I remember, YEARS AGO back in the 60's, when a friend suggested that someday you could work on your car or bike using DIY instructions from a computer. I thought that was unlikely, and joked something like "Call me when you can put the computer on your fender and watch the video." Well, here we are, more or less. It is amazing when you think about it.)

I work in a bike shop, but work in sales. it's hard to get the service guys to work on my bike because they are either too busy with customers' bikes, or they snark at me and tell me to learn to fix my own bike. LOL. So, I spent an hour working on my front derailleur after replacing the cable, and still not right. After watching this video, I see where I made my mistakes and now feel confident to hack at it again tomorrow. Thanks, guys! Very easy to understand video. And the six pack: TRUE

MJ, Thanks a bunch. I had some cable stretch going on causing poor shifting. After your videos, moving my bike from trainer to rides up and down the block and back to trainer a couple times my Ultegra 11 is shifting like Butta! Saved me a trip to the bike hop!

  • @Archergod
    @Archergod 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I wanted to make my own video after seeing so many videos that did not explain all the steps until I saw this video! You may want to add in this point; On the low limit, adjust the deraileur slightly more than 1mm from the chain and when tightening the barrel adjuster, the deraileur will move very slightly in towards the chain to make it 1mm. This will give the cable very good tension needed for high limit adjustment.

Buy a 6 packs to my mechanic? Here in Australia the Bastards they charge you 50 bucks for a 10 min job setting your shift gear. Screw these thieves. I need to learn myself on how to do it! ......Thanks you just saved me 50 bucks.

other than the occasional focus work, this was really informative REALLY consice, and I was very pleased to see the annotations [instead of fingers or tools] to help show the guidelines, and what I should be looking at. as well as showing what can go wrong, like the chain flopping off of the high gear. great video! my cheepo mongoose from walmart came with a rediculous ammount of extra slack in the front shifter cable. so...being spent, I need to do this myself. a lot of videos don't cover the front gears, at all!

  • @onlyspicekitty

after watching this video i think it helped me understand the front derailleur a little better, recently i had to take mine off, i had the shifter for it lock up, but because i have my handle bar extension's next to the shifter , it was not allowing it to down shift

This is probably the best video I've seen of a bunch. I think the best bike to demonstrate would be a triple crank, because you would actually be doing the middle chain ring adjustment. The best advice I have for adjusting the front shifting ? Just start over as if the bike was a brand new build and it was the first time the components were assembled.

Bought a bike out of the box and when built the front mech was not in line.
I went gung ho into adjusting the front mec with racing shifters thinking I knew what I was doing. Mistake!
    I couldn't shift down.
I followed this tutorial and now everything works great.

Great tutorial, thanks! I did find describing the lower limit screw as turning clockwise means "moves in" a little confusing. I would have thought "moves in" means "closer to the bike" but you mean "closer to the inner side of the chain". So your point of reference is the inner of the chain. On the upper limit you then reverse your point of reference to the outer of the chain. This is an inconsistent point of reference, the point of reference should be the bike in both cases. Otherwise very will explained.

Two things (1) The words that appear on screen in relation to moving the LOWER adjustment screw are the wrong way round. The arrows are, however, correct. In other words, turning the lower limit screw clockwise moves the deraileur out (ie. away from the frame; turning it counterclockwise moves it in (towards the frame). (2) The video is mostly shot from the rear of the bike. However, the close-ups are shot from the front of the bike (in the close-ups the pedal crank is on the left) which is an inconsistent and confusing approach.

Great fast talking video. Very helpful. Two minor complaints for future videos and anyone else coming across this that has a little trouble following along
    0. Not really the a problem with the video, but it's easier to do this with the bike upside down if you don't have a stand
    1. There doesn't seem to be any mention that the chain should be put on the smallest chain ring of the front set of gears when you're aligning and setting the height of the derailleur cage
    2. At 1:40, the cable is reattached to the derailleur when at this point in the instructions it's supposed to be detached
