This is one of my favorite ever Star Trek scenes -- especially regarding Spock's character development. He finally "gets it" here. This is such a pivotal turning point for Spock regarding his endless struggle to maintain logic without succumbing to emotion. He begins the movie having (nearly) purged all emotion. He finally realized, after mind melding with V'ger, that with NO emotion there is emptiness. That he would not experience the true feeling of friendship he has with Kirk and Bones. After this scene and in the continuing movies and even in his bits in TNG, you see a changed Spock. A Spock who is finally at peace with himself and has finally found that balance between logic and emotion. Human and Vulcan. Finally at peace with himself.

They set out to destroy the peace-loving Autobots, and a war between the forces of good and evil raged across Cybertron. People who claim that The Motion Picture is too much about visual effects at the expense of the characters have missed what the film is all about. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy all have great character moments and great character development throughout the film. Especially Spock. His encounter with V'Ger finally allows him to resolve his human/Vulcan conflict and accept who he is.

Data would have likely become the go between or locutionist for V'ger and V'ger would likely have wanted to "join with the creator" just the same because understanding emotion is not the same as experiencing it. Not necessarily. Spock is merely talking about compassion. They've all worked together for many years and developed a friendship that includes the female crewmembers on the ship as well. Spock has his friendships that also includes Saavik-who he later marries-and Lt.Valeris (for a short time, no doubt) and Leila Kalomi. Kirk also had his females as well.

Even this scene is miles better then "Strange New Worlds" so far. I'm sorry but I just can't get into it. Nothing will ever top the Original Series, TNG, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. The days of "Good Trek" I unfortunately think are over.

I apologize to all the other comment writers. I understand their passion. But, except for seeing the Enterprise for the first time, I thought this movie was the worst of the lot. So boring and so stiffly acted. Again I’m sorry.
