  • My favorite bits of scenes from The Immunity Syndrome when Spock goes on a shuttlecraft and almost dies. Also, Spock is a sarcastic, smug bitch and McCoy knows it. :)

That's exactly right! The show first aired when I was 7, and with an absent father, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were my role models. And great role models they were too. They demonstrated courage, self-sacrifice, and respect. It's why TOS remains the gold standard 50+ years later.

It's not campy ... we have become disillusioned and pseudo-sophiscated, like tired old Roman senators, we have not grown wise, we have grown, old.
Idealistic? maybe, but I would pray we would go to the stars to explore, not to conquer.

    • @AndSendMe
      @AndSendMe 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Idealism, in an objective rational sense, is the right state of a being that condenses knowledge about the world through concepts. We are creatures of principle whether we like it or not. We can't choose whether or not to generalize, we must generalize. Our only choice is whether or not to seek to do it well. Conceptualize the good, grasp the general truths of what is a good human life, and all you need add is to take those truths seriously, and you are an idealist.

This was a deliberate decision on the part of Roddenberry and the production staff: to make sure the wildly popular character of Spock did not overshadow the top-billed star and his character, from the second season onward they were written emphasizing their mutual admiration and loyalty to each other. The creation of slash fan fiction was an unforeseen side effect.

    • @beth12svist

It's a Shatner thing apparently, but to be honest, now that it's been pointed out to me, it reminds me of a description by Karel Čapek of how Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (the first president of Czechoslovakia) spoke - apparently he also would pause between words, formulating his sentences as he spoke because he always tried to say what he meant in the best possible way.
I guess that may be one of the reasons it doesn't really strike me as too odd; it just subconsciously, for me, puts Kirk in the same category of being as Masaryk, which certainly isn't a bad thing for him to be.

I’m a third generation Star Trek fan, I will always love all the Star Trek shows and movies, all but the crap that has come out from Star Trek: Discovery and Beyond. Gene Roddenberry is crying to see what is happening to HIS show 😂

"... you botched the acetylcholine test ..."??
I know all about acetylcholine. My niece has a very rare genetic defect that causes some of her acetylcholine receptors to be malformed. It has rendered her blind and wheelchair-bound, all due to one wrong DNA base out of 3 billion.
Any good programmer knows that one misplaced comma or period can break code. Yes, DNA, too, is code written by a programmer.

Sorry about your niece. Yes, indeed, a "programmer". & though we live in a fallen world, we have a risen savior.
..everyone's only chance..to someday see the stars & travel the universe.
..the alternative is quite bleak, indeed and worse than the worst day on earth..going with the Lord Jesus by faith to Glory..will be better than the best day anyone has ever had in earth history

@@gzuzsavz - There will be a new Earth and new heavens. I don’t know about “travel[ing] the universe.” I plan on staying in the New Jerusalem.
The “bleak” place you speak of is called Hell. Don’t be afraid to say it. Jesus spoke of it often. It is an utterly dark place with fire and worms and those who go there, like those who go to Heaven, will receive new bodies (God keeps His promises and heals everyone) in which they will feel every lick of flame and every pang of thirst and no the constant gnawing of the worms and hear the constant screaming for all of eternity. It could not be more horrible. Warn people. That’s what Jesus does.

This show was so good. Better than next gen. The relationships between the characters just happened. They weren’t forced like the next gen where they felt the need to introduce datas cat. So stupid.
