    The amazing thing about the great Leonard Nimoy is that when he accepted the role of Spock, he only had the look of the character (pointed ears, haircut) to work with. Everything else about Spock--the nuances, speech pattern, emotional waverings, the Vulcan greeting and shoulder-pinch--was created from the ground up by Nimoy and fleshed out by the writers. One of the best-cast roles EVER.

    • @danbasta3677
      @danbasta3677 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      TM Rezzek Agreed, if you really know the history, DeForest Kelley was originally selected for the Spock role. Gene Roddenberry saw, and said the role simply didn't fit DeForest Kelley, so he made him the chief medical officer, and Leonard Nimoy when adutioned for the role, suited him to the T. It has also been reported that Leonard considered leaving the role after the first season, and actor Lawarance Montage would be considered as a Mr. Spock replacement, as he had an uncanny resemblence to Leonard Nimoy. As we all are quite aware of, Leonard stayed, and yes, he did continue to add several suggestions, and ones were used to develop the mystery of the Spock character as well as the Vulcan civilization and it's people. In the second season episode, The Omega Glory, the hypnotizing effect he was performing on the Yang female was another hidden mystery that was suppose to develop even further if the series would have, could have gone further past the three short seasons it had. This is sad, as the Original Star Trek Series was and is STILL the very BEST Star Trek out there, nothing after it or followed it was any good.

      @@danbasta3677 Leonard Nimory was Spock from the first Pilot. When roles were being cast Gene Roddenberry offered DeForest Kelly the choice of three roles, Kirk, McCoy, and although Spock is mentioned as the third, and he chose the Doctor as the character with the most opportunity to inject comedy into the part. Kelly had more screen credits movie and television, plus more experience than either Shatner or Nimory.

      Daaria Naharis he played that role well. I was coincidentally watching that episode yesterday (Amok Time) and I told my wife, that guy playing Stonn never utters a word, but still seems like a complete dick. I wanted Spock to kick his ass, but Bones said he was too weak. That’s pretty good acting when you can come across as a total asshole without saying a word.

      The word "mutiny", aboard a ship, was terrifying.
      Especially during the Napoleonic Wars. The British fleet was mostly "pressed"...people rounded up against their will, and forced to serve the duration of the war. Whatever life they had ashore, gone.
      Discipline was hard. If there was a mutiny aboard one ship, the fear was that sailors on other ships would join.
      The penalty for mutiny was very very harsh.
      That topic, was why Spock moved from where he was, went very close, leaned closer still...then VERY SOFTLY reaffirmed his authority and then asked his question.
      You very clearly see McCoy change. He knew that after that question was asked, to continue roaring and demanding.....could be considered mutiny
      (Fun little note...mngentry, who commented above was right......you WERE eavesdropping.....Spock was actually speaking so softly when he said his words, that no one else on the bridge could hear him)

Thankfully he finally did say it, showing he cared, but too late. Then Spock struck him to the heart by saying you should have wished me luck. She kept every book stacked numerically underneath my parents bed in crates! Drove my Dad crazy but she eventually became a librarian because of it! Thanks to the success of Star Wars the Star Trek franchise was able to prosper! My Mom lost it when she found out that they were bringing her beloved series to the big screen! I remember going to church and then the movie theater to see the first movie! I had no idea what was going on as a child but my Mom loved it! I was a Trekkie by proxy! 🤣 Although I’m a hardcore Star Wars fan, I still see every Star Trek movie opening weekend with my Mom! It’s a tradition that still brings my family together! I grew up on TOS. I have the box set but it's really cool watching the little clips. It only takes me seconds to identify the episode. Could never get into the other incarnations TNG, DS9, Voyager and all the other garbage they came up with. Star Trek belonged to an era. When it was cancelled in '68 I thought it had at least another season left. The movies with the original cast were OK but nothing beats the original series.

      Personally, I love McCoy's character. But I completely agree with you, there were a few episodes where he was a real dick to Spock when he didn't need to be. The episodes that you pointed are great examples because they show when Spock was under stress and in command, and McCoy fighting him every step of the way. There are a few other instances of him just being plain mean, but honestly, I feel that it was overshadowed by all the real concern and respect that the two had for each other. When push came to shove, they could rely on each other.

      I've always found it interesting how at odds the way McCoy tended to treat Spock was with the otherwise egalitarian racism free Utopia that was represented in the Star Trek universe, or at least aspired to be represented. In particular, the little expressions and jabs he used to undermine Spock, or make fun of him. If you replaced green blood or pointed ears with human phenotypically based racist epitaphs, McCoy would read as such a bigot. None of the Jabs Spock throw back are at that mean level.
      It's another one of the reasons I wish the series had been allowed to unfurl for more than three seasons, because over those three seasons we see McCoy become increasingly respectful and transparent about is esteem for Spock, and it would have been interesting to see perhaps an episode dedicated to addressing McCoy's bigotry in that relationship. The closest it comes is in All Our Yesterdays, when the regressed Spock claps back at McCoy's reference to his ears ("I don't like that. I don't think I ever did.") When I first heard that line, I was chilled by how real it was, but it's ultimately brushed over in the context of the episode.
      I suppose there's a turning point in Search for Spock in the sacrifice McCoy makes to restore Spock's Katra, but it would have been nice to see it better addressed in the series, when it could have reflected on the contemporary civil rights tensions.
