My preferred firearm for home defense is the Rossi Circuit Judge loaded with the first 3 rounds being #4 410 shells and the last 2 rounds being 45 long colts.

First line of defense, properly reinforced security door and door. The time it takes to get through the first security door gives you time to aquire and ready for use whatever your Second line of defense may be. Most doors come down in a few seconds as they are built around a weak door frame.
IMO the first line of defense is at your property line. A fence and some "no trespassing" or "beware of dog" signs will make it clear that your house will not be a cakewalk. Second line of defense is your doors and windows (and the alarm system, if you have one). Third line of defense is YOU.
My first line of defense has always been a couple of extremely protective dogs. They have always served me two ways, as a possible deterrent and an early warning alarm. But properly securing doors and deadbolts will definitely add advantage points to the home owner.
My Shockwave has not been shot too awful much, a few hundred rounds. It has totally destroyed 2 laser sights. I just shoot it instinctively now. Even at 10 yards ( a really big residential room) fine birdshot will blast through sheet rocked frame wall. Thanks Jerry!

Having a .380, 9MM, .38 Special or similar caliber handgun is probably a good idea if you have it with you everywhere in your home. Some people believe that is silly but when a home invasion takes place, it is fast and within seconds someone could be inside your home and you are at their mercy unarmed. Things can and will change if some people become desperate and have no respect for others. Cities and towns are full of those people too....

Not recommended. Length, weight, capacity. All issues. Plus let's hope you don't forget to pump in an emergency. I'd move to a semi auto if you had to have a shotgun for home defense. But generally speaking, I would say to evaluate and pick an AR15 instead. .223 rounds tend to break up hitting not people. Plus the weight/length/capacity is so much better. 30 rounds vs 3-6 in a shotgun. Maybe a pistol caliber AR. .45 ACP or 9mm. Something smaller, lighter, more bullets. But you still get the penetration /carried energy issue through walls.
I live in town and when I do load up a shotgun I use heavy field loads of #4 shot. Might damage my house a bit but no danger to neighbors. Ruin a bad guys day for sure at 15 feet. All Mossberg 500s, one 835. As they say you own the shot till it comes to a stop.
Thank you for bringing a lot of information to us. Those that can only think of some lame joke about "Jerry's home defense" have probably missed the point of the video. I hope the rest of you were paying attention.

Watching this Vid posted three hours ago and my wife says, he’s wearing the same shirt you have on. Shaking my head, I’m wearing the same shirt he’s wearing.
I hope that I am not roasted for the question I am about to ask… Firstly, thank you for the outstanding explanation of application of different ammunition based on tactical settings. This is an often overlooked subject and I feel it is something that needs to be carefully considered when choosing a weapon for home defense. That being said, I would like to ask your opinion regarding “less-than-lethal” rounds and their application in a home defense scenario. I have military training (9 years) and have fired numerous types of weapons and calibers. Upon leaving the service, I chose to become a nurse and have not used a firearm in any capacity for more than 17 years. I feel as though I have put the sanctity of life upon a pedestal but lost sight of the fact that the world may not adhere to the same ethical standards. Sadly, this has put me in the position where I feel the need to be prepared to protect the health and wellbeing of those I love which necessitates the use of a firearm. For this purpose, I have chosen the Mossberg 590 Shockwave (20 ga) as my platform. I am still internally conflicted as to the use of deadly force though and thought the “less-than-lethal” option may be a reasonable compromise. I would greatly appreciate feedback and respectful dialog regarding this decision. Thank you all so much and I wish you the best.
I think getting hit with a rubber slug would stop a lot of people, could even kill or permanently injure them. Just presenting the fire arm would stop a lot of people too. In the event that the attacker is ready to kill you presenting a firearm or shooting rubber could get them firing lead at you or others so it’s a tough gamble. It’s a tough dilemma, nobody should want to kill or injure anyone. I think since a firearm should only be used out of life or death necessity one should have it loaded to defend one’s life with. I don’t think anyone should hit anyone with anything if deadly force isn’t justified, even a slingshot could kill someone. If you do decide to load less lethal ammo though (they don’t call it non lethal because it can kill) you might consider having standard ammo at the ready as well. If verbal warning and the presentation of the weapon are not enough to stop an attacker they are a serious threat. I also worry that someone might be quicker to use rubber ammo thinking it’s safe when it’s actually very dangerous. I guess my advice would be don’t shoot anything unless you absolutely have to to defend your life or the life of others.
#4 bird shot is not the same as #4 buck. As Jerry said, where you are determines what to use. #4 bird is for big game birds, geese etc. Those are stout. #4 buck comes in reduced or regular velocity. It will go through sheetrock, but just about everything does. Are you shooting inside a house? Apartment? Hard to say what is best. Need more info.
In this episode, I see three shotguns discussed, ALL Mossberg: 590 pump (called 500 here); the new 940 JM Pro; and a modified and tricked out Shockwave. He also mentions matching them with the application so birdshot for short range for less overpenetration.
If I can recommend some video editing advice, this video was near perfect but wished every time you talked about a different ammo, you would cut to another video where you show the case in good detail along with the box
Jerry, what about number 4 buck for home defense? I carried #4 buck on duty in the latter seventies, with 3 double ought buck and two slugs in a saddle.

Thank you for bringing a lot of information to us. Those that can only think of some lame joke about "Jerry's home defense" have probably missed the point of the video. I hope the rest of you were paying attention.
Eric N I was paying attention but it’s also fun to imagine the terror in the intruders souls when he gets hit with 16 shots of 357 with a reload in 3.42 seconds all in one hole😂
Ammunition shortage! Looks like Gerry cornered the market!
Which gets declared a national landmark first, Jerry Miculek or his mustache?
Thank you for the good and very helpful uploads.
Thanks for the new vid Jerry. I have a 870 Wilson Combat. I should get a Mossberg. I mean Mawzberg.
I LOVE YOUR AMMO LIBRARY in back of you!
Simple and easy to understand thanks
I’d like to wallpaper my man-cave with his wall.
Watching this Vid posted three hours ago and my wife says, he’s wearing the same shirt you have on. Shaking my head, I’m wearing the same shirt he’s wearing.
Haha, Bass Pro?
Jerry your literally sitting in front of a gold mine!!!!! Hahhaha rock on
I hope that I am not roasted for the question I am about to ask…
Firstly, thank you for the outstanding explanation of application of different ammunition based on tactical settings.
Some pepper spray might prevent you from needing lethal force. But a gun is like tweezers or diarrhea medicine: If you need it, nothing else will do.
Thanks Jerry. Good content for all the new gun owners out there in social distancing land.
I've heard a lot about #4 being great for home defense because it doesn't penetrate as much.
The only home defence Jerry needs is his picture on the front door!
That freaking ammo shelf.....it is scary and awe inspiring. :)
i like ## 4 buck 18.5 barrel for home defense.
I have owned a 870 for 28 years and it is smooth and tough as nails
With bad guys availability to wear body armor too. Your thoughts about goose /turkey loads with high center mass shot placement training?
If I can recommend some video editing advice, this video was near perfect but wished every time you talked about a different ammo, you would cut to another video where you show the case in good detail along with the box
Old school for me. Browning humpback light twelve. Any load that will cycle that action will stop anyone at close range.
Thank you.
This is a lifetime worth of information. I love the current situation topic.
And for some strange reason, 29 people gave it a thumb down.
Jerry, what about number 4 buck for home defense? I carried #4 buck on duty in the latter seventies, with 3 double ought buck and two slugs in a saddle.
Would love to see the look on a home invasions guy's face when he realizes the house he just invaded belongs to Jerry...ooops!
I literally have to do a strategic layout of your home especially if u have a family to strategically place them out of harms way quickly!
I use #4 buckshot for home defense for the reason you mentioned about 00 buckshot.
Those pump guns seam slicker than a bucket full of eel snot!
great video! a ton of info! I'm saving your video for reference; Thanks for posting!
That Shockwave setup is slick. I want that.
I prefer claymores. Doubled up at times when necessary.
